본 연구는 4,094명의 한국인을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 한국인 원주민이 중국동포 및 북한이탈주민에 대해서 갖고 있는 인식을 조사했다. 설문참여자 중 소수만이 중국동포 및 북한이탈주민과 교류경험이 있다고 응답하였으며, 이들에 대한 인식이 상당히 왜곡되어 있음을 발견했다. 구체적으로, 중국동포와 북한이탈주민의 임금과 교육수준을 저평가하고, 범죄율과 인구규모는 과대추정하였다. 그러나, 북한이탈주민에 대한 인식 오류 정도와 통일 혹은 북한이탈주민 정책 관련 선호는 큰 상관이 없음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 이민자 집단에 대한 대중의 인식 및 지원과 관련하여 새로운 통찰을 제공한다.
We investigate South Korean natives’ perceptions of Korean Chinese (KC) and North Korean refugees (NKR) with a sample of 4,094 natives from an online survey. We find that respondents, only a minority of whom have interacted with them, have substantial misperceptions on these immigrant groups. Specifically, natives underestimated the income and education level of KC and NKR but overestimated their crime rate and population size. However, misperceptions about NKR are not related to natives’ preferences for reunification and policies supporting this group. Our findings provide novel insights to the understanding of the public’s perceptions on and support for immigrant groups.

경조사비 지출에는 금전적 지출과 경조사 참석이라는 시간 비용이 수반되며, 이것이 사회적 네트워크를 유지하는 비용으로써 축적된다면 개인의 노동시장 성과에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 즉 경조사비 지출이 쌓여 형성된 인적 네트워크로 인해서 구직에 드는 비용 또는 기간이 감소하거나, 직장유지율이 높아지는 등의 이익이 나타날 수 있다. 이러한 사회적 네트워크의 효과를 분석하기 위해서는 일회성 경조사비 지출의 액수보다는 누적된 경조사비 지출에 대한 정보가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 재정패널을 이용하여 13년 동안의 누적 경조사비 지출액이 해당 가구의 중고령층 가구주의 노동시장 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 누적 경조사비 지출액의 증가는 2019년 기준으로 가구주가 취업해 있을 확률을 높이고, 연간 근로 개월을 늘리는 것으로 추정되었다.
Participation in other household's family events such as weddings and funerals entails financial expenditures and time costs of attending the events in South Korea. Such costs help maintain social networks, which could affect individual labor market outcomes by facilitating job search or increasing job retention rate. We explore this possibility by estimating the effect of ceremonial expenditures on labor market outcomes of the late middle aged household heads. We find that the increase in the cumulative ceremonial expenditures increases the employment probability of the household head and the number of months working in a year.
