There is not the essential difference among the recognition of time represented in the chinese poetry of the three countries, Korea, China, and Japan. They observed the various images of the nature and humans invariably according to the flow of the time, and configurated the various feelings derived from that in the form of poem. The poets of the three countries recognized that the time induces the sorrow rather than the delight to the people, and so they configurated them in the various forms. They sometimes apprehended the speed of the time passing paster or slower than the actual time flow according to the circumstances and behind stories the poets were placed in, despites the speed of the time is constant without any changes. At the result of it, the poets expressed the sorrow, the grudge, the hope sprung up from that recognition. And they appreciated the past time more beautiful than the present time, so they expressed the inconvenient emotion about the human incompetence of the controlling the time and the value of the present time. In this way, The old poets of the three countries configurated the time relating the prosperity and decline of human life in the various forms.

The author do considers narratives not folklore but stories in which historical truths were exaggerated, augmented, or reduced to be circulated. The fact that ancient Korean novels(古代小說) added moral factors (interest) to historical truths may reflect such viewpoint. Inquiring the origin narratives in the study of ancient novels, or habitual configuration of time, region, and characters in the beginning of novels is a method of pretending to be historical truths. Three Jusas (songs of spell) in ancient poetry were selected to be considered of their time perspective. ‘Bihyungrangsa(鼻荊郞詞),’ ‘Jiguisa(志鬼詞),’ and ‘Cheoyongga(處容歌)’ are individually worthy of controversy, and have factors with which literature, history, and tradition (folk customs) can be investigated. All the three works shared the basis of ‘Byek-sa-jin-kyung(辟邪進慶 : defeating evil and celebrating happiness)’ and at the same time serve as folklore closely related to people's lives. Once a historical event is included in folklore, it undergoes a process through which it is settled in the mentality of the public by way of Entzeitlichung(‘out of time’). In Bihyungrangsa(鼻荊郞詞), ‘a spirit’ and ‘group of ghosts’ represent its Entzeitlichung. They are distant from reality in some extent because they are surreal beings. Houses are a place where people live, but in Bihyungrangsa, ghosts are ordered not to stay in houses because a deplorable principle of ‘expelling ghosts’ by an illegitimate may be applied. Therefore, it shows the public awareness about treating ghosts through ‘defeating enemy by using of other enemy.’ Bihyungrangsa as a narrative may have been created for comforting Bihyungrang's spirit because he was a posthumous child (or his father was the spirit of King Jinjee<眞智王>). The origin of Jiguisa(志鬼詞) is India's Sulpaga(術波伽) narrative for educating Buddhist trainees that women should be avoided because they disturb learning, while Jiguisa, a Silla's narrative, is transformed to be a romance in which Jigui(志鬼) yearns after Queen Sundeuk(善德女王) and the Queen is tolerant for him. Therefore, it shows the way Silla received foreign narratives was greatly tolerating and romantic. However, Jiguisa should be considered a narrative showing sanctity that a love of the vulgar should not contaminate sacred temples, as represented by the anxiety of Monk Haekong(釋 惠空). In Goryeo's Cheoyongga(高麗 處容歌), Cheoyong-abi(處容) is greatly powerful and gruesome. He is already no more an incarnation of tolerance as in the Hyangga ‘Cheoyongga(鄕歌 處容歌),’ but is a frightful divinity who dispels demons of fever. While he represented the limitation and struggle as a male named Cheoyong (as shown in witnessing the sexual intercourse of his wife and the god of smallpox and appeasing his anger to the god), he is transformed to be a divinity transcending time and space and is settled in the mentality of the public.

I am focused on ceremonies from the birth to the death to research Saju, awareness of time circle, limited man's life compare to unlimited time and a sense of time by oriental mathematical principle at this thesis. As a result of this thesis, Saju -year․month․date․time- has moved in a circle by 12ji spindle of time. Awareness of time circle was always considered at the ceremonies of wedding, funeral and ancestor worship mostly. We should know that our ancestors had recognized time correctly and exhaustively. On the other hand, man's life is limited but our ancestors were understood that death was a part of life and extension of life also. We can analogize a connection between the understanding and infinity of time out of the ceremonies of funeral and ancestor worship. In conclusion, 3, 7, 9, 12(especially 3) are connoted in the awareness of time circle and infinity of time on the oriental mathematical principle. It is shown at the ceremonies of birth, a coming-of-age, wedding, funeral and ancestor worship mostly at the ceremonies of birth and funeral. Ceremonies from the birth to the death in connected to rotation, infinity and repetition of time closely. More detailed result can be expected by a researching about the awareness of their space.

There are two types in mythical tradition related to the birth of Hyukuse(혁거세), the founder of Shilla Dynasty. One is the type of ‘descending from heaven’(천강형—ⓐ type), the other is the type of ‘the Holy Mother’(성모형—ⓑ type). It is the purpose of this research to clarify mythological identity of the ‘Suhsul’ Holy Mother(서술성모), who have been not so noticed relatively. To do so, I compared the structure and symbolism of the two types. In ⓐ type, it's structural pillar is the marriage of Heavenly father[heavenly man] and Earth mother[earth woman]. In contrast, there is no Heavenly father[heavenly man], but Pregnancy and Birth by the Holy Mother without husband, in ⓑ type. The migration of the mother and son is a distinctive motif of ⓑ type. But their migration, in ⓑ type is not connected with the motif of ‘father navignation’, of ‘patriarchal succession[enthronement]’, like myths of the north countries. I think that beings of Mountain Goddess, like Susul, would provide the key to the reason why their structures are different. In other word, Susul can be considered as the Great Mother, because she not only conceived by herself without husband but also, after birth and migration, didn't get a husband, became Goddess of Suhsul mountain. Meanwhile, symbolism of ‘the advent from well’, ‘Najung’(나정) has important meaning as much as ‘descending from heaven’. Because Najung is the other name of ‘Gyejung’(계정), and there sacred dragon(계룡) showed good sign. This is not different from the birth of ‘Aryoung’(알영), who came to this world with sacred dragon's good sign in the well, ‘Aryoungjung’(알영정). It is very important that the sacred dragon would be considered as an incarnation of West Mountain Goddess, Susul, in mythical symbolism of Shilla. So ‘Hyukuse’, known as being came from heaven in ⓐ type, can be united in same symbolic bundle, with ‘sacred dragon’, ‘Aryoung’, and the ‘Suhsul’ Holy Mother. In addition, Ilyeun(일연) connected even ‘white horse’(백마), which is a main symbol in ⓐ type, with the ‘Suhsul’ Holy Mother, as the reason why all the two mean west. Finally, We can understand the riddle that ‘Suhsul’ gave birth to Hyukuse and Aryoung, who were a couple as the King and Queen of Shilla dynasty. It means not biolgical birth, but mythological, symbolic birth. So the ‘Suhsul’ Holy Mother is the center symbol integrating bipolar symbols, like white horse and sacred dragon. In existing persepective oriented on ⓐ type, It is not easy to see ‘Suhsul’ as the phase of the center symbol, or as the Great Mother.

This paper focuses on a study of the literary excellence of Hyangga through a comparative analysis of Hyangga and Byunmoon regarding their formation and production period, background of formation, description style, versification and description content. The major content is summarized as follows: Hyangga was formed in the late 6th or early 7th century and flourished fromthe early to the late 8th century. Byunmoon was formed around the end of 7th century and flourished from the late 8th to the early 9th century. Internally, Hyangga was formed through the influence of old Korean ballads while externally it was related to Buddhist hymns transferred from Buddhist scriptures. Internally, Byunmoon was formed through the influence of old Chinese verses and ‘Futi’while externally, Byunmoon also was related to Buddhist hymns transferred from Buddhist scriptures. In the same way that the universal style of Hyangga is a mixture of prose and verse, the universal style of Byunmoon proves to be a mixture of prose and verse. This seems to be because the description styles of Hyangga and Byunmoon were affected by the description style of scripture-based Buddhist hymns that were used as subject matter. Concerning the versification of Hyangga and Byunmoon, although they look very similar when comparing the number of lines, they are considerably different when comparing the quantity and the number of letters, due to the fact that Byunmoon retained and followed a framework of versification constructed in the process of translating scripture-based Buddhist hymns, while Hyangga sought original rhythms based on an idiomatic understanding regarding the quantity and number of letters. In Hyangga, all extant works except the ‘Song of Offering Flowers’ are closely related to Buddhist ideology and they played a role in the propagation of Buddhism at the time they were composed and performed. Even for Byunmoon, Buddhist Byunmoon accounts for over 70%—58 of the total extant 86 pieces—and it was found that monks originally composed and sang them as a teaching tool in order to describe the miraculous stories of the Buddhist scriptures for their audiences. In conclusion, most works of Hyangga, except ‘Bohyeonsiwonga’, have the strong character of creative poetry because it blended original content with matters taken from the Buddhist culture of Shilla. In the case of Byunmoon, these works used stories in sutra, stories about Buddha and the patriarchs, and stories about the Buddhist family as subject matters ; therefore these works have a strong style of non-creative poems and the content is usually not original.

This paper aims to identify the formation of the novel and the anecdotes related to Jegal Ryang and his wife through the Romance of Three Kingdoms from Gongmyeong Seonsaeng Silgi (The Historical Records of Master Gongmyeong) which is the only block print edition, the Romance of Three Kingdoms that deals with the wife of Jegal Ryang. It also examines the peculiarity of the block print edition from Jeonju in comparison with the old printing type edition, within which the wife of Jegal Ryang displays her special talent and Regal Ryang learns it. Comments on Jegal Ryang's wife in historical records and the records in the Romance of Three Kingdoms are brief. However, they always said that “Jegal Ryang's wife is ugly, but very talented,” or “Jegal Ryang could achieve his study with the help of his wife.” This provided interesting sources upon which a novel could be formulated in the future. Hence, these source were formed into a novel, Gongmyeong Seonsaeng Silgi as they were incorporated with the elements of different stories from popular novels such as Parksijeon (The Tale of Mrs. Park). The story was also inserted into the old printing type edition of Hwayongdo Silgi (the Historical Records of Hwayongdo) or Hwangbuinjeon (The Tale of Mrs. Hwang) and won much popularity. The narrative structure of Hwayongdo Silgi is almost identical as the Gongmyeong Seonsaeng Silgi, but the ways which the story was narrated and the things were described differed. This demonstrated the difference between the block print edition and old printing type edition, which were printed in the similar times. Even if they were both popular printing, the old printing type edition which was printed in Seoul added more spice and entertainment that enticed the readers and was more sensitive to the changes of the time. However, the block print editions, especially, the ones from Jeonju were printed in different modes from those of Seoul depending on the regional character, readership and the economic condition. In this sense, Gongmyeong Seonsaeng Silgi clearly displays the peculiarity of the novels that vary according to the regions in the age of old printing type edition.

There has been no concern in studying the oral narratives of Goryeoins so far, which shows a significant contrast with those cases of Chinese or Japanese Korean expatriots. This study thus makes the first attempt at the oral narratives of Central Asian Kareiskys. Collected narratives come to 90 pieces. There are 61 pieces that I have collected myself and 29 pieces that Anatoli Kim has published in Russian. As a result of classifying and analyzing these materials, I have found out the following characteristics: 1. Typological Characteristics : first, there is an apparent lack of type 5 story—the story of the relationship between a human being and a creature or an artifact, that is, a locality-based legend. It may be considered a natural phenomenon that these expatriots who have been living in a foreign land uprooted from their country are unable to relate a type 5 story. Second, among the type 24 stories (being unaware because they have enough reason for that), there are language-related humors where newly settling Goryeoins are making blunders due to their insufficient linguistic knowledge. Third, the most wide-spread is the type 4 story (being either right or wrong), in which goodness and evil, along with other ethical themes, are dealt with. The percentage falls on 43.3, almost half of the whole, which shows an interesting parallel to the typology established by Professor Dong-il Cho in his research on the narrative samples in the Great Anthology of Korean Oral Literature. All this confirms the fact that we Koreans have been much interested in things that are either ‘right or wrong,’ at least in the narrative tradition. 2. New Fragments : First, the story (‘Brothers Forgiving Their Mother’) that a love-blind, amorous mother tries to kill her children who nonetheless forgives their mother falls into this category. Second, the story of ‘A Horse General Yi Soon-sin rode’ also belongs here. The white horse which was ridden by General Yi becomes a plow-horse, then is laughed at by a donkey ridden by a gentleman ; however, he retorts upon the donkey, saying that it is better to live a short but worthwhile life. Third, there are also fragments emphasizing the way of fate, which might indicate that the Goryeoins tend to live their life interpreting it as their fate. 3. Other Characteristics : First, the narrators code-switch when they narrate going between Russian and Korean. Second, in the considerable number of cases the oral narratives of Uzbekistan Goryeoins delivered by Anatoli Kim include heroes and other major protagonists who carry both their given names and surnames. Considering that most of the Goryeoins who are able to narrate oral stories are in their eighties, it is not exaggerating to say that the job of collecting and reporting on their oral narratives conducted during this sabbatical leave is and will be the last as well as the first attempt. For most Goryeoins who have lived a hard life, orally transmitted stories seems to have played a key role in ensuring the continuance of their home language, home values, and home culture. The findings available here will be hopefully consolidated with other achievements from other disciplines so that the life and inner consciousness of this group of expatriot Koreans may be understood and measured, which could contribute to the ideals of great national integration and to the ideals of coexistence by interaction and cooperation.

As part of the logic for strengthening the throne, a world-view was most likely an essential and indispensable concept. Unlike China's ‘Four Foreigners to Follow One Order’ policy and in the case where the Three Korean States actually shared borders with foreign nations, ancient Japan could not be established from the relationships with neighboring countries and instead can be said to have been formed in the process of winning over powerful clans. Therefore, the Emperor system of Japan has the unique feature that it could be maintained only when there is a heterogeneous and exclusive existence within the ruling order. With the system of legal codes, the Japanese world-view also changed to a configuration that became aware of foreign relations. In other words, they set China as a neighboring country and Balhae, Shilla and other foreign nations as foreign countries, but another group of foreigners was set within Japan as well. This kind of composition is, for practical purposes, a difficult logic to exist in reality in foreign affairs, and once foreigners cease to exist, Japan's world-view will also be destroyed. Thus, by setting another group of foreigners within the Japanese society, clan of the overseas origin became an existence that made perpetual and constant domination over foreigners possible. Clan of the overseas origin were recognized as foreigners and unlike other immigrants, the clan of the overseas origin had the unique characteristic that a continuous relationship configuration with the Emperor through fulfillment of formal duties related to changing surnames, appointment to positions and strengthening of the Emperor's throne were required.

Norinaga said, “There is no relief, no relief is the Shinto's relief.” when someone asked him about the religious relief. He insisted that everyone could not help going to Yomi (the world after death in the Japanese myths) and death was the most sorrowful thing for the mortal. He denied, on the model of the ancient morals of the Japanese myths, Confucian and Buddist views on death as false and untrue. But he left a mysterious testament just before he died which mainly concerned his graveyard. I formed two concepts called an internal view on death and life and an external view on death and life, in order to make research on Norinaga's views on death and life. I researched on the relationship between relief and sorrow to study Norinaga's views on death and life. I found that the internal view on death and life is familiarity to death, and the external view on death and life is that the soul remains in the tomb. In other words, we can say that such a view on death and life is an exchange between this world and the world after death. Therefore I interpreted the meaning of his testament as the expression that he eternally hoped to stay in the burial ground located on Mt. Yamamuro. As we know it through the text, Mononoaware is a mental state of being deeply moved when someone experiences joy, excitement and happiness. If so, what is the object of deep impression that Norinaga had attachment for? This is the cherry tree which he indicated in detail in his testament. We can understand how much attachment he had for the cherry tree when we look at the self-portrait containing a waka(a Japanese poem) of the cherry tree, the scepter made of cherry tree and the cherry tree on top of his grove. The true meaning of his testament is that his soul will live in the cherry tree, and not in the burial on the Mt. Yamamuro.

In this manuscript I will consider the meaning of the bronze mirror as it has been traditionally understood based on historic research concerning Yamamoto’s family and the role of the bronze mirror at places such as shrines or temples. The bronze mirror dates back to the age of Edo and was used for shamanic purposes, including incantations in accordance with general folk beliefs. After the age of Edo it was increasingly seen as a part one’s household goods, then later, with glass importations, the culture of the bronze mirror changed again. The glass mirror has been used for practical uses, but the bronze mirror has always had religious significance. The culture of the bronze mirror has not died out due almost entirely to the national believers during the age of meiji. The bronze mirror came to be needed as a god’s material by national believers at shrines all over Japan and even in countries colonized by Japan. After WWII ended, its demand from shrines diminished. However due to Yamamoto Shinji restoration efforts of famous bronze mirrors, including a well known “Magic mirror”, this cultural icon has been appointed to the realm of intangible cultural assets. The Japanese culture of the bronze mirror still remains alive and well for people in general as both a symbol of religion and culture. In this way, it’s value is priceless.
