Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 1-20 In this study, the characteristic of the synonymy of medical terminology was discussed with relation to medical translation/interpretation. For this end, the characteristics of terminology and the formation of medical terminology, which was caused by the trial of standardization in the medical terminology and the penetration of the civilian terms into the medical terms, classified by several reasons, were examined. For the next step, the effect of the medical terminology was examined on medical translation/interpretation activities by analyzing the mistakes shown in Korean-Russian medical translation/interpretation. Finally, it was tried to find ways to improve medical terminology education by classifying mistakes. Since medical translation/interpretation was conducted in both Korean-Russian and Russian-Korean translation/interpretation, mistakes appeared in both Korean-Russian and Russian-Korean medical translation/ interpretation was examined. The purpose of this study is to improve understanding of medical terminology education and to develop medical tourism industry through correct translation/interpretation by improving understanding of the synonymy of medical terminology in Korea.

Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 21-50 Dans la formation assurée par les écoles professionnelles de traduction, l’acquisition des techniques spécifiques à mettre en œuvre dans le métier de traducteur constituent l'axe principal de la pédagogie, chaque cours étant avant tout consacré à la réalisation de cet objectif. Si les erreurs propres à l’opération traduisante y occupent donc une place de premier plan, contrairement aux fautes de langue proprement dites, les lacunes qui apparaissent dans ce domaine chez la plupart des apprentis traducteurs desservent considérablement la clarté et l’intelligibilité de l’expression, l’enseignant étant donc tenu de réfléchir à une démarche corrective adéquate pour y remédier. Dans un premier temps, la présente étude s’attache à recenser les fautes et les erreurs de langue les plus courantes rencontrées dans les travaux des apprentis traducteurs en s’appuyant sur les études déjà existantes pour analyser ces productions et au vu de ces éléments, propose une approche corrective évolutive au fur et à mesure des étapes de la formation. Il s’agira pour commencer d’expliquer les fautes les plus répandues, la correction indirecte, puis directe intervenant par la suite, cette démarche se distinguant de celle adoptée avec les apprenants de FLE dans la mesure où les fautes constatées chez les apprentis traducteurs proviennent en partie du manque de pratique et d’activation des connaissances acquises. En vue de le pallier, l’auteur propose d’encourager les apprentis traducteurs à recourir systématiquement, dans le cadre de leur travail personnel, à des exercices de lecture à voix haute, de shadowing et de search and destroy qui leur permettront d’améliorer la qualité et la précision de leur expression en français.

Kim, Jin-AhㆍKim, Ji-Eun. (2018). Cultural-Semiotic Examination of Problematic Chinese Translation of Korean Food Names: Focus on Reader Acceptability. Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 51-75 Public translation is an integral part of effective national branding strategy. As a type of public translation, translation of Korean food names specifically requires a culturally informed approach along with linguistic analysis given the inextricable relationship between a country's culture and food names. In this light, this study applies cultural semiotics to the analysis of Chinese translation of Korean food names with particular regard to their cultural significance. Semiotics, pioneered by F. Saussure and subsequently branched out into various areas of research, provides analytical framework to various research fields including language, arts, and media. Cultural semiotics, a subdiscipline of semiotics most notably presented in the theories of C. S. Peirce and Y. M. Lotman, treats culture as the most overarching unit of “text” created by signs and studies everything incorporated within this text. Food embodies the cultural, historical, and social characteristics of its country of origin; translators of food names must share a collective memory to identify the signifieds (signifié) behind them. Therefore, translation of Korean food names calls for analysis beyond linguistic aspects of translation – cultural analysis is instrumental to this endeavor. This study examines native Chinese speakers' reception of 480 Chinese translations of Korean food names proposed by the National Institute of the Korean Language. I selected the proposed translations that have low reader acceptability among native Chinese speakers in a survey conducted by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and discussed their problems from a cultural-semiotic perspective.

Park, Ji-Young. (2018). Plagiarism of Translations by Creative Writing, and Protection of Translators’ Copyrights: On Controversy over Shin Kyung-sook's Legend and Yukio Mishima’s Short Story. Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 77-100 This study analyzes the controversy that Shin Kyong-sook plagiarized Yukio Mishima’s Short Story when writing her novel, Legend, from a perspective of translators’ copyright protection. Opinions are divided over whether Shin’s Legend is a plagiarized work, with no clear solutions proposed to plagiarism as of yet. Furthermore, little attention has been paid in the controversy to the fact that the subject of plagiarism was a “translation”. Therefore, this paper attempts to propose a solution to such controversies. To this end, this study took note that the court rules on plagiarism disputes based on “comprehensive non-literal similarity” and “fragmented literal similarity”. After observing how the two criteria were imposed in a court ruling on the purported plagiarism of a translation by a creative writing, the paper applied the criteria in the same way that the court followed, leading to the conclusion that the Shin’s Legend is likely to be ruled not having plagiarized Yukio Mishima’s Short Story. Therefore, the paper proposes the introduction of tiered-licenses for translation reproduction as a solution, which would address such plagiarism controversies, promote the re-use of translations and further strengthen translators’ copyrights.

Yu, Han-Nae. (2018). Translation Criticism on Literary Translations by Translation Award Winners: The Little Stranger. Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 103-133 This paper intends to provide translation criticism on The Little Stranger , which was translated by the winner of Yoo Young Translation Award. The evaluation criteria for translation awards have not been specifically defined yet. The study applies Berman's translation criticism methodology to exhibit how the translator's translation strategy was implemented in the translation and what could possibly constitute good translation. Literary translation criticism is different from literary translation evaluation in that it tries to recognize how the translator captures and expresses the literary value. By introducing the method of translation criticism and presenting an actual criticism based on this methodology, this study attempts to move away from the fault-finding evaluation toward a productive criticism. Through dignifying the work of translation, the study is expected to highlight translation as a creative act, thus improving the status of the translator.

Yoon, Hyun-Sook. (2018). A Study on the Difference between the Page Translation and the Stage Translation. Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 135-153 Drama is one of literary genres and an element of theatre. As a result, drama has the duality of literariness and theatricality. This duality of drama affects the drama translation. It makes the drama translation method to be divided into two, namely, the page to page translation which emphasizes the faithfulness to the source text and the page to stage translation which emphasizes stage performance. However, to fully realize the potential of the dramatic text, it is necessary to have a comprehensive approach that is not tied to any type of the drama translation. In this respect, this study compares and analyzes the characteristics of the page translation and the stage translation. Through this, this study aims to investigate the efficient drama translation strategies for the various aspects of the drama translation. To achieve this purpose, focusing on Chekhov's Uncle Vanya , this study examines the characteristics of the two types of drama translation in terms of the five components that constitute the external form of dramatic text, that is, the title, the acts and scenes, representation of characters, the dialogue, and the stage direction.

Lee, Sung-Yup. (2018). Reception of Translated Picture Books and Peritexts: A Case Study of L’Oizochat and Popopipo, tissu de mensonge. Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 155-177 This article deals with some peritextual elements like titles of series and explanations of work in the translations of picture books in order to figure out why the peritexts are added to the target texts and how they affect their reception. It examines especially two translated picture books: L’Oizochat and Popopipo, tissu de mensonge of a series entitled <Child Who Philosophizes>. As for <Child Who Philosophizes>, the series’ title which is added to the translated picture books gives a new identity to the publications in target culture: it’s not simply a literary picture book but one which aims to develop child’s ability of thinking. Another peritextual element is added: beside the names of authors and illustrators, those of text critics are put on the book covers, which means that the explanations of work written by them are significant. The last new peritext element is the explanations of work. All these peritexts which are absent in the original texts but added in the translated texts make adult mediator teachers, parents, librarians, etc. - find out the type and theme of the translated picture books as easily as possible and help him/her to make child reader think about the themes of the picture books. The addition of the peritextual elements is related to the situation of target culture: it is supposed to result from the Korean educational environment which focuses on philosophical inquiry and critical thinking in the early childhood education program. The addition of the peritexts as like explanations of work can transforme the literary and artistic text into a pedagogical tool.

Choi, Moon-Sun. (2018). How Do Professional Interpreters Build Their Glossaries? Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 179-206 This study examines how professional interpreters build their glossaries as part of their preparatory work ahead of a conference. Three professional interpreters were asked to produce a glossary for a specialized conference and to document their work process with a screen recording program. A number of insights on professional interpreters’ glossary and their working method were discovered. Among others, it was found that their glossaries contained verbs and adjectives as entry items, making them distinctive from other terminologies in general. While the contents of the individual glossaries produced by the participants varied to a large extent, there were some overlapping entry items, and the format was quite uniform as a table consisting of three fields for SL items, TL items and descriptions thereof. Also, it was revealed that high productivity in glossary compilation was related to the ‘vertical’ progression of work in which monolingual entry item extraction was executed thoroughly before search of their equivalents was undertaken. The integration of similar entry items into a higher-level item was observed, which was believed to be reflective of systematic knowledge-base construction by professional interpreters. The findings of this study shed further light on professional interpreting practice and may be applied in the training of student interpreters.

Hong, Seo-Yeon. (2018). The Current State of Legal Interpreter Training in South Korea. Interpreting and Translation Studies 22(2), 207-231 This research examined training programs in place for legal interpreters in South Korea. The analysis found that these programs can be classified into three groups, depending upon their providers-judiciary institutions, local governments and private institutions in joint operation, and educational institutions. The first group of programs offers insufficient training in terms of duration and content to enhance interpreters' capabilities. The second group is operated as a part of local government projects. This implies that follow-up training sessions would not be arranged when those projects are terminated. The third group is deemed adequate in quality and quantity, but they are now available as outsourced programs only. In this regard, this paper suggests that policy making and budgeting at the central government level is essential for a systematic training of legal interpreters. The training programs also need to be diversified while seeking consultations and collaboration with both legal and interpreting professionals. This study also argues that a center for judiciary interpreting affiliated with the Ministry of Justice and the Office of Court Administration needs to be established to coordinate relevant affairs.
