This study explores how much of omissions and mistranslations in English-Korean consecutive interpreting are related to the problems in note-taking, and investigates ways to reduce omissions and mistranslations in interpreting through improving note-taking. Eleven first semester students in an interpreting and translation graduate program participated in the study. They interpreted a video clip on the US-Korea relationship as part of their mid-term exam. Their interpreting was recorded, transcribed and analyzed in conjunction with their notes and the source text. The omissions and mistranslations in the interpreting were tracked back to their notes to see whether and how they were marked on the notes, and how that in turn affected the interpreting output. Analyses found that around 80% of omissions and 50% of mistranslations were absent from the notes; 50% of mistranslations were marked on the notes but with some issues. Further analysis of the notes revealed three patterns of note-taking that mostly lead to mistranslations: 1) poor structuring, 2) wrong key-words, 3) unrecognizable symbols and abbreviations. Pedagogical implications and limitations of the study are discussed.

In the novel Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, the terms of reference are used repeatedly in the form of [Last Name+Family Name+Mr/Ms. (씨(ssi)] when referring to the female characters (e.g., Kim Ji-young+ 씨 (ssi), Kim Eun-young+ 씨 (ssi), etc.) and such terms of reference determine the stylistic features of this novel. In other Korean novels written from a third person point of view, the terms of reference are rarely used in the form of Mr./Ms. (‘씨(ssi) and the name. Therefore, terms of reference, [Last Name+Family Name+Mr/Ms. (씨(ssi)], used in Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 only for the female characters, are the marked sign for the specific discourse effects. The purpose of this study is to focus on the terms of reference for the female characters used as an indicator of feminism and analyze the writing style of Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982. This paper conducted a comparative analysis on the Japanese and English translations of these terms of reference from the semiotics perspective. As the linguistic variations in the terms of address and reference influence the relationship (tenor) between the sender and receiver of discourse, this paper examined the target text for “Terms of Reference” of female characters in the source text under the social and cultural aspects based on the register of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by Halliday.

This paper deals with some of the nonverbal communication elements as an important para-textual component in interpreting on which few researchers have tried to provide reasons for insufficient academic criteria. From an abductive perspective, this paper organizes data according to Hall’s classification: gestures, facial expressions, and silence as nonverbal communication elements and time and space as nonverbal communication bases. These are not extra-messages created during the communication process, but the messages themselves. This study also discusses some cross-cultural differences in the body expression elements ranging from the head to legs. Facial expressions were disserted with smiling and eye contact. Silence was disserted in the categories of positive/negative. Time was disserted in the category of modern/premodern. Spaces were disserted by dividing in spacial sensibility itself and spacial sensibility with men, seating space. These findings will help us better understand and perform interpreting tasks.

The main purpose of this paper is to compare referencing conventions between English-translated Korean laws and non-translated American and British laws in terms of collocational salience and frequencies. Intertexual or referencing devices serve specific functions in the discourse of law, which include signaling textual authority, providing terminological explanation, and facilitating textual mapping. Common law jurisdictions have developed their own preferences in the use of referencing patterns for displaying each function, and established specific contexts of use in their official legislative guidelines. In this respect, English translations of intertextual devices in Korean laws need to reflect the referencing conventions of non-translated laws in order to meet the cognitive expectancy norms of their intended foreign recipients and reduce difficulties with their interpretation at court. The comparison of collocations of main editing units of legislative provisions used in the translated and non-translated law corpora revealed that the translated laws show salient departures from the referencing conventions of TL non-translations for each function, thus requiring revised translation guidelines for ensuring convergence with TL non-translations.
Perceptions on Test Item Disclosure for the Medical Interpreting Ability Test

This study analyzes the perceptions on disclosure of test items on the Medical Interpreting Ability Test. The study conducted a survey with the Medical Interpreting Ability Test applicants and students at the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Responses were collected from 412 respondents and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. The survey result showed that 79.1% of the respondents wished for the disclosure of previous test items to increase the reliability of the test and the amount of data they had in preparation for the test. Conversely, for those who desired non-disclosure, they believed that previous questions were unnecessary as test preparation material, and that it could lower the test reliability. As the right to know is emphasized, the respondents’ perception of the disclosure of test items can be applied to other interpretation and translation evaluations.

With the recent technological development of translation and interpreting and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid changes are happening in the translation and interpreting market. In this context, this study aims to present implications for future translation and interpreting education in order to prevent the mismatch between the educational field and market demand and to identify future directions for translation and interpreting education. To this end, the study reviewed literatures on the future and education of translation and interpreting, and conducted a questionnaire survey of 255 graduates with Korean-Chinese majors from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, Ewha Womans University, to reflect the voices of interpreters and translators in the field. A total of 88 people participated in the survey. The questionnaire consisted of three parts, including personal information, current career status, and suggestions for educational direction. Based on the literature review and the questionnaire survey, this study presents suggestions for the future translation and interpreting education in terms of educational content and methods.

This study aims to find out some learning elements in medical interpretation from the Spanish medical drama “Centro Médico,” aired in RTVE, Spanish Public TV channel, which is based on real medical stories, and to provide learning materials for efficient interpretation between Korean and Spanish. We carried out a survey of students majoring in Spanish interpretation and translation to examine how they would identify learning elements for Spanish interpretation, and how important they would think it is to nurture Spanish medical interpreters. This paper also analyzed how this study is different from the previous study on interpretation learning elements in the medical and public health sector (Han, 2019). The learning elements in Spanish medical interpretation, which this paper introduces as a strategy for smooth medical interpretation, can be used as education materials for Spanish interpretation.
