This study presents a case study on designing and implementing the "Translation Talent Training Course" commissioned by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education, to cultivate critical foreign language translators for Korean cultural content. Targeting both critical foreign language majors and the general public in response to the growing global demand for K-content, the program incorporates unique cultural content translation education. The program encompasses genre-specific translation education, providing students with opportunities to engage with diverse text types, and the evaluation process emphasizes enhancing competencies in translation education, assessing the content and outcomes of cultural content translation. The study underscores the need for developing foundational language skills and a comprehensive understanding of the foreign culture, highlighting the extraction of cultural elements from translated texts to achieve functional equivalence and the importance of considering the contextual and purposive aspects of translation in conveying the surface and deep-seated meanings of Korean cultural elements accurately in the target language.

This study conducted a meta-analysis of 61 research papers published in domestic translation journals that utilized surveys. The aim was to assess the methodological validity of these surveys by examining various aspects of the survey process, such as question formulation, response scales, sample representativeness, sampling methods, response rates, sample demographics, and data analysis techniques. Key findings revealed a prevalent use of convenience sampling, often targeting students affiliated with the researchers' institutions. This suggests a need for broader, probability-based sampling to enhance representativeness. Many studies heavily relied on basic descriptive statistics, potentially limiting the generalizability of the results. One recommended means to overcome such potential limitations was to collaborate with statistical experts to determine the appropriate sample size, question type, and response scale. This study provides a foundation for adopting more valid survey methods, ultimately enhancing the quality and reliability of survey research outcomes in the field.

The need for Computer-Assisted Interpreter Training (CAIT) for students and lecturers in terms of self-study and teaching, increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as training shifted from in-person settings to online interactions. This study aims to find a direction for CAIT in Korea based on case studies abroad, examining and organizing the latest findings on CAIT tools. A survey was conducted on students attending the “T&I and Technology” course in order to assess the status of CAIT in Korea. Unlike overseas counterparts, Korea has had no research on interpreter training with regards to the use of smart pens and tablets, and very little research on the development of CAI. The survey also found that most students' tools were limited to pen and paper during most of their training. Furthermore, the survey revealed a very limited awareness and knowledge of available terminology management tools. The technologies that students wanted to use appeared in the order of terminology management tools, machine translation, speech recognition and generative AI. Through the survey, the need for future CAIT research and development was raised.

This paper explores an action research study conducted on a professional development (PD) program initiated by the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation (GSIT) of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Expertise in interpreting and translation necessitates consistent, deliberate practice and efforts to acquire domain-specific knowledge. However, opportunities for professional development are limited for individuals who work as interpreters and translators post their intensive two-year training at the GSIT. A survey on demand for professional development indicated a high demand for such opportunities among GSIT graduates. In response, a retraining program was designed to provide intensive four-hour classes in four specialized subject areas – law, medicine, IT, and finance – on Saturdays in July, 2023. Expert instructors with over 20 years of experience in their respective fields imparted subject-matter knowledge and practical advice. A post-program survey and in-depth interviews with participating graduates revealed their high satisfaction with the program. Regarding future PD initiatives, the participants expressed a need for enhanced training in interpreting and translation skills as well as more in-depth lectures on subject-matter knowledge. Based on these findings, the paper discusses potential avenues for the future professional development of interpreters and translators.

This study investigates the translation strategies of cultural terminology in the Azerbaijani and Turkish translations of Hwang Seok-young's novel Baridegi, published in 2017. The unique Korean traditional cultural terms found in the novel Baridegi are categorized and analyzed for how they were translated into the target languages. Translation strategies for cultural terminology are broadly categorized into domestication and foreignization, and more specifically into adaptation, equivalence, borrowing, and borrowing + explanation methods. Analysis showed that equivalence translation strategy was the most frequently utilized in both the Azerbaijani and Turkish translations. Analysis also showed that for the foreignization translation strategy, Azerbaijani predominantly used the borrowing + annotation translation strategy, while Turkish mainly employed the borrowing + in-text explanation translation strategy.

This study reports the results of a qualitative meta-synthesis of three peer-reviewed articles on the working experience of hearing sign language interpreters (SLIs) in Korea. Taking a meta-ethnographic approach, the analysis revealed the hearing SLI experience to be focused around two key themes: “different worlds (a clash between ‘seeing’ and ‘hearing’ cultures)” and “role conflict”. Synthesis led to the metaphor of “the role conflict of SLIs playing on an uneven playing field without a playbook.” Results show how the individual themes link together as SLIs struggle to mediate between two fundamentally different worlds only to find that the players are engaged in a structurally unfair game, the SLIs’ version of the playbook does not prevail, and as referee, the SLIs are charged by both teams for not being on their side. The study sheds light on traditional role models for SLIs, as well as issues of neutrality and positionality.
