This study discusses aspects and features of K-contents’ fan translation in Russia. Specific objectives of this research include: looking into fan communities and web-sites that provide fan translation of audio-video contents, and the activities of fan-sub groups (FSG) who work for fan translation, and examining features of Russian fan translation of K-drama. Based on the findings, the study analyzes external and internal features of the Russian fan translation, and compares them with the features of US’s fan translation of Japanese animations and Korean fan translation of the US TV drama. It is reported that currently in Russia there are more than 100,000 online web-sites or communities that provide Korean wave video contents. Despite such a high popularity and demand on Korean fan translation contents in Russia, there is no study about Russia’s fan translation. Paying attention to this unbalance calling for urgent need for research, this study analyzes not only aspects and features of Russian fan translation, but also related overall fan society. This study is meaningful in that it is the first research that studies fan translation and its fan communities in Russia and analyzes their features and compares with other countries’ fan translation. Hopefully, this study would contribute to the study about the trend of Korean wave and, further, about fan translation in Russia.

Social constructionists stress that an interaction with others in a social environment is essential to construct knowledge and learning is a product of collaborative activities rather than individual efforts. On the basis of the theoretical framework, nine students in my translation class were divided into three groups of three students and asked to conduct a "group translation" activity. The students have engaged themselves to various group activities in the translation process. They have worked closely together doing research, analysing a source text, identifying translation problems, discussing translation strategies, and making revisions. After a semester-long activity of team translation, a survey was carried out to examine the students' evaluation of the activity as well as the effects of collaborative learning on students' translation competence.

This study aims at understanding how a society perceives the translator by analyzing 357 job advertisements for a variety of translation-related positions that were collected from January to December 2015. Based on empirical data, the paper attempts to investigate the current status of the translation profession in Korea from the perspective of those who employ translators. Up until now, translator studies on the role and status of the translator have been focusing on the translator's self-image, utilizing questionnaire survey and in-depth interview methodologies. Self-image consists only a part of the overall perception of the translator, thus outside-in perspective is required to counteract the bias to inward focus. Job advertisements provide a means of gaining some insight, particularly as viewed from an employer's perspective. Data analysis of this study reveals what types of positions, languages, regions, domains, qualifications, and skills are required for translation-related jobs. Amid rising concerns over deteriorating market conditions for the translator, the result can be utilized in identifying the current status of the translator, having implications for translator training curriculum. Despite limitations of the data analyzed in this study, the paper shows how a society perceives the translator, adding diverse perspectives to translator studies.

This case study aims to improve understanding of lecture interpreting and to discuss the roles of lecture interpreter by examining characteristics of lecture interpreting. Due to the globalization trend, it's expected that lectures by visiting foreign professors continue to increase. Accordingly, lecture interpreting for them is also in demand. However, research on this area has not been properly conducted. As for the characteristics of lecture interpreting, it has differences as well as similarities vis-a-vis other types of interpreting. Among these differences the most conspicuous is that overall expectations for lecture interpreter vary depending on whether emphasis is put on the 'teaching' aspect or the 'interpreting' aspect. To investigate further these aspects, this study gives an example of a course organized by a Russian professor and discusses desirable roles of lecture interpreter. With regard to the roles of lecture interpreter, it could be summarized as follows: First, lecture interpreter needs to play the role of a mediator or a communicator. Second, lecture interpreter should play the role of a dramaturgist. Third, lecture interpreter needs to be an adviser or a counselor for students. Finally, lecture interpreter should be another educator for students. It is hoped that this study could provide a momentum to activate the discussions on lecture interpreting.

French director Dany Boon’s movie, Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis became a hit, attracting the highest number of viewers among all French films in France. The synopsis of this movie is relatively simple. A southern postmaster, Philippe Abrams, is appointed to work in Bergues, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, a northern region of France. There, he is shocked by the linguistic and cultural differences between the southern and northern regions, but the film resolves the conflicts humorously. This is not a fresh story; rather, it is based on a universality that can enable a change in contexts in any country or any region. But from a translational perspective this intralinguistic difference is the main element of the movie and it is difficult to translate. So the translation of the northern dialect is the main translation issue and the greatest challenge for the translator. As proof of this difficulty, many translation studies have already been published in Europe. This movie was released in Korea in July 2015. However, there are vast differences between the European and Korean subtitles. The Korean subtitles are ‘relay translations’ via the English subtitles, while the European translations are a direct translation from French. Therefore, this article focuses on the problem of ‘relay translation’ in the Korean subtitles of Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis and analyzes their errors and deviations. Above all, if we consider that reality that most foreign movies, except English movies and a few Japanese movies, are translated via English subtitles in Korea, research into relay translation is an urgent matter.

Along with the advancement of speech recognition technology and machine translation technology in addition to the fast distribution of mobile devices, automatic speech translation technology no longer remains as a subject of research as it has become popularized throughout many users. The goal of this paper is to describe the method of hybrid machine translation based on common transfer for multilingual speech and machine translation. As of 2012, there are different bilingual machine translation systems such as Korean-to-English, English-to-Korean, Korean-to-Japanese, Japanese-to-Korean, Korean-to-Chinese, and Chinese-to-Korean machine translation systems in Korea. An increase in the number of tourists is expected due to the fact that the Winter Olympic Games will be held in Korea in 2018. Budget problem prevents us from employing a sufficient number of human interpreters who can fluently interpret such languages as Spanish, French, German, and Russian. For this reason, consumers such as the Korea Tourism Organization and speech translation service providers demand a multilingual speech and machine translation system. We are developing a multilingual speech and machine translation system aiming for multilingual expansibility and high-quality translation accuracy.

This study compares and analyzes sign language interpreter training curriculums of five institutions in Korea, Japan and China, which are three Asian countries regarded as model cases in terms of the legal and educational system for the welfare of deaf people. The focus of the study is on the descriptive side, not on the evaluative, providing basic understanding of the relatively unknown area for the target reader. In order to do so, the authors purpose the analysis frame that is consist of two analyzing points, with the first depth to be whether the training content is theoretical or practical. And in the second depth, the training contents are further divided into four sub-categories, which are either linguistic or contextual knowledge under the theoretical category, and under the practical category, whether it is for sign language acquisition or for sign language interpreting. The curriculums of Korean institutions seem to have a quite different educational purpose from those of Japan or China. While Japanese and Chinese institutions seemingly focus on training a social worker who knows how to interpret sign language, Korean curriculums put more emphasis on preparation to pass the accreditation and certification test.

In the special case of students accepted to the Korean-Spanish department at the program of the Graduate School of Interpreting and Translation (GSIT) with Korean as language A and Spanish as language B, the methodology of teaching Spanish language must be oriented in tandem with the work of translating texts which is characterized by the use of formal and specialized language, and also conference interpreting which is the final objective of the training of students entering this graduate program of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS). This paper seeks to justify the use of a single methodology in teaching advanced Spanish to the students of GSIT, HUFS, considering the required fundamentals for entering the graduate program and the pressing needs that require students to master Spanish language according to the market demand in specialized and formal interpretation at conferences, seminars, meetings and also in translation for the diplomatic field.
