This study reports on an investigation into temporal, technical, and web-searching efforts during the post-editing process compared with translation from scratch. A total of 13 translation trainees without formal post-editing education were asked to post-edit and translate economic texts from Korean to English without time constraints. The process was recorded with keystroke logging and screen recording programs. According to the analysis results, post-editing was mostly faster than human translation, although there were considerable individual differences in productivity improvement. In terms of technical efforts, post-editing involved reduced keystroke activities with less insertion and deletion events, but other events showed mixed results, implying that navigation efforts can also be partly influenced by keyboarding styles. The frequency of web searching declined in the process of post-editing, while searching channels remained almost unchanged. These findings provide some useful insights into post-editing education, suggesting the need of further investigations on efforts in the post-editing process.

This study aims to reflect on the educational goals based on the characteristics of Korean translation majors and suggest the future direction of Korean translation education. By examining the interpretation and translation course at RMIT University in Australia, which provides A→B translation education under similar conditions to those of Korean translation majors, we seek to identify avenues of improvement for Korean translation majors. We use a case-study approach, which has limitations in terms of comparing domestic and foreign interpretations of graduate schools. However, this study is necessary to initiate the next stage of research. This study deals with timely research topics at the beginning of discussions on Korean translation majors, especially curriculum or subjects. This study is important as it reviews the current status of Korean translation majors and compares it to the situation of RMIT University, which teaches A→B translation of various languages with the destination language being foreign and not native.

There is a growing trend of TV advertisements which take advantage of subtitles as a visual sign and dubbing as an acoustic sign in order to evoke intended feelings and emotions in target consumers. This implies that the two methods are considered ‘new’ semiotic components of TV advertisements as semiotic entities. Against this backdrop, this study seeks to explore the potential role of subtitles and dubbing as a creative element which goes beyond the existing role of translating source language. For the purpose, the researcher collected and analyzed domestic TV advertisements with subtitles or dubbing. This article first presents four factors which influence the choice between subtitles and dubbing: (1) appeal types (utilitarian appeals/expressive appeals), (2) endorser types (celebrity/typical consumers), (3) genre of advertisements, (4) media for the delivery of advertising messages. It then looks at what role subtitles and dubbing as a semiotic component play in achieving advertising creativity.

Situations of multilingualism have pervaded in all areas, especially in film industries where this trend is reflected progressively. Recent studies within the audiovisual translation have shed some light on how multilingual dialogue is translated on screen. However, few studies have examined how multilingual dialogue is dubbed into Korean. This study analyzes three exemplifying polyglot films that started streaming on Netflix in the last decade: Eat, Pray, Love (2010), Django Unchained (2013) and Call Me By Your Name (2018). The paper aims to see how multilingual dialogue is translated or narrated in the source text. Based on the translation strategies of preservation and homogenization, further investigation is conducted to show how multilingual dialogue is dubbed into Korean. This study provides a general insight into the dubbing of polyglot films into Korean and its potential consequences that can be applied to the dubbing of other polyglot films.

Kevin O’Rourke (1939-2020) was an Irish-born Columban Father and one of the most respected translators of Korean siga 詩歌 (poetry and song), especially sijo 時調poems. He translated more than 2,000 works of siga and received various awards and honors, including a presidential citation in 2009. Nevertheless, there are few studies that discuss his view of how siga should and can be translated. Against this backdrop, the present study investigates his English translation of Yun Sŏndo’s “Ŏbu sasi sa” 漁父四時詞(The Fisherman’s Calendar), a 40-verse sijo cycle that depicts a fisherman’s life in the four seasons. The main focus is on the sijo formats (chang 章division, line breaks, indentation, refrains, etc.) employed in his 1987 translation and his 1988/2001 revisions, respectively. These formats are also compared with those used by six other translators who rendered into English either part or the whole of the same original.

The purpose of this paper is to review the evolution of computer-assisted interpreting(CAI) and to examine the state of the art in CAI-related research and development. Pointing to the lacunae in CAI research in Korea, the current paper presents the argument that calls for a new perspective supporting human-machine collaboration in interpreting. It looks into the trends and developments related to CAI, mainly driven by research efforts conducted in Europe. In particular, CAI tools are described according to their use in interpreting phases and generation. The main part of the paper is focused on presenting research aimed at developing the latest generation of CAI tools integrated with automatic speech recognition (ASR) and/or machine translation (MT) systems. Latest research on integrated CAI models is presented in four categories: proof-of-concept research with manually built systems; the use of general-purpose, commercial ASR and/or MT programs in the interpreting process; the advancement of existing CAI tools with the integration of ASR/MT engines; and finally, the development of a dedicated CAI system equipped with an ASR engine that can be adapted to the specific domains of interpreting sessions.

The covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on conference interpreting. It has become practically impossible to hold face-to-face meetings and remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) has now become a norm. In this article, we propose to look at the factors that complicate RSI. Apart from the factors already cited in previous studies such as the psychological stress felt by interpreters who have to work isolated in an unsuitable environment and the additional mental load, this article tries to highlight the very specificities of the source texts used in conferences for RSI. Illustrating an example of the work carried out by interpreters during the UNPKO ministerial conference, we are trying to have an understanding in the work of the interpreters who must perform not only the task of simultaneous interpretation, but also script transcription and post-editing in preparation for the conference. By referring to Shlossberg's transition theory, this study attempts to identify the factors that may influence interpreters' adaptation to change. It is because adaptation to transition will only be possible with a comprehensive understanding of the changes that occur in the practice of RSI. In conclusion, this study proposes some recommendations to help conference interpreters to better adapt to the challenging environment of RSI.
