In this paper, we covered the capability how the nagative affix ‘un-’ and the nagative suffix ‘-frei’ of german language can be combined with which kind of basis word. They can be combined with basis word and also have a semantic function negating its basis word. Prafix ‘un-’ produces some coinages through mainly combining with noun as well as adjective. Nowadays in german language, it is interesting that infinitive does not combine with prafix ‘un-’ any more. We can observe some suffixes, for example ‘-frei’, ‘-los’, and ‘-leer’ and so forth, as some negative elements containing a negative prafix ‘un-’ in german language. The nagative suffix ‘-frei’ in them, basically forms adjective coinage by combining with just noun in german language. And negative suffix ‘-frei’ also has semantic function negating noun of basis word belonging to the first component.

The purpose of this study is to discuss how animacy affects English-Korean translations. 52 inanimate subject sentences and 52 animate subject sentences are selected from Reader’s Digest (English-Korean Version) Vol. 80-85. Our analysis shows the followings: i) 96.2% of the English animate subjects are kept as subject in their Korean translations, while only 55.8% of inanimate subjects are translated as subject. ii) Inanimate subjects such as nature (e.g. cloud), machine (e.g. helicopter), social organization (e.g. college) remains as subject in Korean translations. iii) Human participants occurring in syntactic slots other than subject are chosen as new subjects in Korean translations, while inanimate subjects are demoted to adverbial or prenominal phrase. iv) Less prototypical transitive clauses tend to be translated as transitive clauses with the same inanimate subjects, while more prototypical transitive clauses tend to be translated as intransitive clauses with new subjects.

The purposes of this paper are to suggest the objectives and achievement standards of the Primary English National Curriculum, and to present the directions of developing teaching materials based on multiculural education. In order to achieve these purposes, the definition of the multiculural education and theoretical researches on the multiculural education are reviewed, the 2007 English National Curriculum and Primary English Textbooks are analysed, and 4 teachers’ lesson plans were diagnosed. Also, 5 primary teachers were interviewed in terms of the multiculural education. The results indicate that the objectives and the achievement standards of the National Curriculum need to be devised and the teaching materials should be presented in the textbook and teachers’ guide book considering the multiculural education. Thus, in this paper, the directions on the objectives and the achievement standards of the National Curriculum, and the teaching materials in the textbook and teachers’ guide book considering the multiculural education are suggested.

In this study, we described linguistic patterns of Korean time expressions including digits observed in real texts such as on-line daily newspapers. Time information is one of the most important information that any information extraction systems need to recognize automatically. As this information is conveyed by some linguistic patterns specific to each natural language, the exhaustive and reliable description of these expressions is strongly required. We first observed some types of time expressions from on-line newspapers and then classified them into 13 classes. We presented these classes under the LGG formalism which is adequate to present finite-local constraints. The Unitex system, conceived for the compilation of this formalism, makes LGG graphs converted into finite-state automata and applied during text analysis to extract time expressions as presented in the graphs.

The purpose of this study is to inquire into the relation between German Junggrammatiker and Ueda who completed the modern Japanese language. Particularly his thought of language that language is not a letter but a sound is affected by Junggrammatiker's thought of language that the object of study of language is the language which really exists and is in use. And he asserted that the scholar of Japanese literature can not carry out a study of language on the basis of the scientific principle. Ueda's thought like this is the same as Junggrammatiker's thought that was conflict with humanistic thought of language in order to break the authority of the classical Philology and in his thought was immanent the radical ideology of Linguistics that shook hard the existing thought of language. So we can ascertain that Ueda's thought of language which is affected directly by Junggrammatiker is on the ground of the concept and ideology of the modern Japanese language.

TOEIC has been recently used for many purposes such as criteria for gaining a job and promotions in companies etc. Most university students are considering scores of this test as a significant tool to apply for a better job. Therefore, since it is widely used for practical purposes, it is reasonable to analyze the TOEIC in light of English education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between listening comprehension and reading comprehension by analysing TOEIC scores. TOEIC scores of 559 university students were used for analysis. In this study, correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between listening comprehension and reading comprehension. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) listening comprehension was closely related to reading comprehension (2) language ability of grammar and vocabularies also has a close relationship to listening comprehension.

The purpose of this study is to account for the English-Korean translation patterns for English relative clauses. There are some significant differences between English and Korean modification structures. The most important difference is that Korean does not allow the postmodifiers like relative clauses in English. Hence we could expect that the English relative clauses will be translated into premodifiers or any other paratactic structures in Korean. We analyse the corresponding patterns of translation of relative clauses in English-Korean translated texts. We also try to explain the specific translation patterns for restrictive vs. non-restrictive relative clauses in terms of sign-oriented vs. sense-oriented translation. Both types of relative clauses in the translated texts mainly follow the sense-oriented translation, while non-restrictive relative clauses are relatively more inclined to follow the sign-oriented translation procedures.

This paper is concerned with null functional categories in Korean and its purpose is to show that they are accounted for in a principled manner by the Empty Category Principle, which implies that the Empty Category Principle is extended to accommodate a variety of functional categories. Attempts have been made to account for null complementizers and null determiners in various languages using the Empty Category Principle (Lamontagne and Travis 1987, Butler 1989, Hong 1994, Ahn 1996, and Lee 2004). In this paper, we will deal with various verbal and nominal affixes in Korean, which are generally assumed to belong to C, D, or P. First, we will discuss Comp -ko appearing in different types of embedded CPs and show that -ko can be phonologically null only if it satisfies the Empty Category Principle by being properly governed. Then we will discuss nominal affixes such as -ey, -eykey, and -lo and argue that they should be properly governed in order to be phonologically empty.

A Phonetic Account of Korean Affricates : Neutralization with a Palatal Glide

Compared with stop counterparts, much less attention has been paid onto Korean affricates. Phonetic properties associated with affricates need to be further investigated, and there lies the issues concerning their exact place of articulation. In sequence of Kang (2006), the current study aims to provide another piece of evidence regarding phonetic characteristics of affricates when spoken and perceived relative to the palatal glide /j/ in a carried sentence of Korean. The results show that affricates are produced and perceived identically irrespective of the glide /j/ in presence. By contrast, alveolar stops and fricative exhibit consistent differences when followed by /j/ in acoustics and identification tests. The genuine alveolars differ significantly depending on the following /j/ in terms of their pitches at release, and F2 formant transitions at the offset of the preceding vowel and onset of the following one. The presence of /j/ at the post-alveolar context is identified correctly at the mean of 95 percent, while the affricates on focus make it almost impossible to separate it from the following glide, marking the overall correctness rate around 50%. The above phonetic results corroborate the general assumption that Korean affricates are not alveolars but post-alveolars.

The purpose of this paper is to propose that the suspension of the that-t effect may be accounted for by the ECP. The rest of this section provides data illustrating (the suspension of) the that-t effect. Section 2 presents evidence that sentential phrasal adverbs are different from non-phrasal adverbs like probably in terms of their distribution. Section 3, with the assumption that phrasal sentential adverbs are base-generated in Spec of a maximal phrase between CP and IP, reexamines (the suspension of) that-t effect in terms of the ECP. The last section is a conclusion drawn from the analysis.

This study is mainly a description of the function of tone in Kilega and a phonological analysis of the behavior of tone in verbal structures. This paper first shows the phonemic role of tone in the language. Secondly, it introduces five phonetic tones including two contour tones. It then analyzes the tonal behavior in verbal structures. Kilega verbs are divided into two types: low-tone verbs and high-tone verbs. Both low-tone verbs and high-tone verbs have their L or H in the first syllable only underlyingly. The tones of the remaining syllables are determined by tone deletion, spreading, downstep, and default association. The tonal downstep involving some verbal prefixes supports the idea of the expanded verbal stem domain, which incorporates the object prefix. This study has its importance also in its description of an endangered, poorly investigated language with few native speakers.

A Note on the Seem as if Construction

This article provides an analysis of the seem as if constructions in English. Focus is put, in particular, on two following observations: (i) that the verb seem, standardly analyzed as monadic (or unaccusative), takes both a finite clause and a subject, and (ii) that no other types of finite clause than as if/though is not allowed in the construction. Given that pronouns and their antecedents form a single doubling constituent at the outset in the derivation (Kayne 2002), it will be argued that the subject of that verb starts out in the downstairs clause and undergoes raising to subject position in the upstairs. Furthermore, the acceptability contrast that as if and that finite clauses represent is proposed to reduce to the subclasses of complementizers with respect to [±Predicative](Rizzi 1990).
