고대영어 매입절의 동사구어순과 명찰알고리듬

This paper explores how to derive the word order of Old English(OE) subordinate clauses via the labeling system(Chomsky, 2013), which provides a new perspective on the word order in question. AUX-V, V-AUX, AUX-V-O and AUX-O-V orders are derived in OE subordinate constructions where quantified and pronominal objects are not selected. After arguing that the headedness parameter approach cannot capture these word orders, we show that these word orders can be derived unproblematically within the labeling system(Chomsky, 2013), where given SO={AUX, V}, one of the SO moves out of the SO in order for minimal search to select the remaining head as the label. Thus AUX-V order is derived in {AUX, V} if AUX moves out of the SO whereas V-AUX order is done if V moves out of {AUX, V}. Next if an object NP is merged in the remaining VP, producing SO={VP, NP}, one of the SO moves out of the SO again in order for the label of the SO to be selected, thus deriving AUX-V-O or AUX-O-V respectively. The labeling system adopted here rules out V-O-AUX order which did not exist in OE by virtue of no feature sharing in {VP, NP} during the derivation.

한국인 L2 학습자의 영어 관계절 습득 양상에 관한 연구

This paper argues against the assumption that in an English Relative Clause, the greater the distance or the number of words between the filler(noun phrase) and the gap(in the relative clause), the greater the difficulty for students as demonstrated in the SDH(Structural Distance Hypothesis) or LDH(Liner Distance Hypothesis). Because of the Unaccusative verb clause having an unique feature; Unaccusative verb has a subject whose meaning is a patient or a theme, it can be considered a Subjective Relative Clause in that it has the same number of words between the filler and the gap, or Objective Relatives Clauses in that it has the same structure between them. That’s why L2 learners have difficulty acquiring an English Relative Clause. Based on data from tests, this paper suggests that L2 learners should be reminded of other factors like verb features when learning an English Relative Clause.

This paper aims to investigate the satisfaction and effectiveness of general English by comparing students' and instructors' perceptions. For the purposes of this study, 323 college students who were taking general English courses participated in the study. 27 native and 22 Korean English instructors also participated in the study. Survey questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect the data. The survey results showed that the students' satisfaction was lower than the instructors', and the Korean English instructors' satisfaction was higher than the native English instructors'. Also, there was a gap between the instructors' expectations and the students' perceived effectiveness. The information from the open-ended questions and interview data was analyzed according to emerging themes and categories to find out strengths and weaknesses of the general English program.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate English raising constructions in terms of the cognitive construal of prominence. The prominence as cognitive construal has two aspects: profiling and trajector/landmark distinction. In this paper it is argued that the profiling and trajector/landmark distinction in the prominence construal for English raising constructions are motivated by the main clause phenomena and the so called figure/ground focusing construal, respectively. It is claimed that the trajector/landmark distinction is accountable for the prominence asymmetry between a raised subject and a raised object in English raising constructions. On the other hand, the profiling aspect of prominence is related to the prominence asymmetry between a main clause and subordinate clause sentence element. The two factors interact to set up the hierarchy of prominence for the three types of raising constructions.

The purpose of this study is to analyze reading speed with reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in elementary school students' English reading fluency. To do this, this research examines 6th grade students in Busan by adapting the DIBELS(The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)program, which is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills. The DIBELS program's procedures are designed to be short fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. The results finds that reading speed and accuracy, retelling, and comprehension have strong positive correlations in reading. Also, the results suggest how to improve effectively English reading proficiency. The educational implications were discussed in the context of the educational policy making process and reading development for Korean elementary school students.

Under the hypothesis that sentence processing is constrained by the language universal principle, the present study aims to investigate whether the semantic constraint has an immediate effect on initial syntactic implementation in ambiguity resolution of a main verb versus a reduced relative clause. Using a self-paced reading task, two experiments including manipulated animacy of sentential subject and structural ambiguity were conducted by representing segments differently. Forty three Korean university students proficient in English were involved. In two experiments, Korean learners have immediate access to semantic information and the resulting reading times are consistent with the predictions of interactive-processing theory. In addition, irrespective of the way segments are represented, they use the same strategies to resolve ambiguity for reduced relative clauses.

Although traditional grammar has treated determinatives as a type of adjective, many descriptive grammar books such as Quirk et al.(1985) accepted them as a word class independent of adjectives. Huddleston and Pullum(2002) and Chomsky(1995) have established the determinative as the head of Determinative Phrase(DP). In spite of these scholars' treatment of so-called ‘post-determiners’ such as many, little, three, and second as determinatives, most of the post-determiners still behave like adjectives in their morphemic formation of comparative/superlative degrees or their appearance in the predicative position. This study aims to propose the semantic and functional criteria for determinatives compared to adjectives and treat or reconsider the ambivalent usage of the post-determiners as the gradience in categories suggested in Aarts (2007). The proposal suggests allowing those criteria to naturally explain the reoccurrence of determinatives in DP.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence in the acquisition of English modal auxiliaries. Sixty four college students participated in the study after being categorized into either a high-level English proficiency group or a low-level English proficiency group depending on a TOEIC score. A grammatical judgment test and a pragmatic judgment test for English modal auxiliaries were administered and the analyses of Pearson correlation, independent t-test and two-way ANOVA were performed. The results showed that there was a statistically significant mean difference between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence of two English proficiency groups in the use of English modal auxiliaries, but that there was not a statistically significant correlation between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence in the use of English modal auxiliaries. The discussion about research results and the direction of further research were presented.

This study aims to examine whether phonological information is used during visual word recognition processes. While most of the previous studies suggested importance of the orthographic information, there have been debates on the role of the phonological information on visual word recognition. In this study, 44 university students participated in a cross modally primed lexical decision task with high and low frequency words. The effect of the auditory primes that matched with phonology(e.g./궁/) or orthography(e.g./국/) of the visual target words(e.g. 국민) were compared with unrelated control(e.g./언/). The results showed that both of the phonological and orthographic priming conditions facilitated lexical decision latencies for high frequency words while only orthographic priming had an effect for low frequency words. The results were discussed based on the bi-modal interactive activation model of the word recognition.

An N-gram Analysis of Asian Learners’ Writing : Focusing on Grammatical and Functional Perspectives

The purpose of the study is to investigate how Asian learners use formulaic sequence of language in their writing. Formulaic sequences, i.e., n-grams are considered to be one of the criteria for determining learners’ natural language use. Asian learners’ essays are explored in terms of grammatical and functional perspectives to illustrate their particular patterns of language use. To this end, the study analyses Korean, Chinese and Japanese learners’ academic essays found in the International Corpus of Learner English. It is found that Asian learners over-/under-use certain n-grams. From a viewpoint of grammatical structure, they overuse clause-related n-grams, such as I think this is. From a functional perspective, the category Other is significantly overused. It indicates that Asian learners prefer to use n-grams not included as Referential, Text organizer, or Stance which native speakers often use.

A number of off-line studies with different methodologies have reported a discrepancy in children’s sentence interpretation of only. Tone Patterns of Blended Words in South Kyungsang Korean

The purpose of the current study is to investigate tone patterns of blended words in South Kyungsang(SK) Korean. Korean is booming up with blended words recently. And more interestingly in SK Korean, which is a pitch accent language, these blended words have tone patterns. Thus, the current research examines how the tones interact when the blended words are made from the source words. The present paper studies the tone pattern data of the blended words that have various source words. These source words are native Korean, Sino-Korean, and English words. The results of the current study show that the constraints on the SK tone system posited by Lee(2009) such as *#LL, and the avoidance on long monotonic H tone words and on two pitch falls in a prosodic domain are active in the blended words as well.

Idiomatic Complement and Null pro Subject

When the idiomatic theme forms an idiom chunk with the verb root in the multiple Case marking(MCM) construction, even if the Case marker isn’t attached to the theme, it may appear in the verbal complement position, preserving an idiomatic meaning. The idiomatic(i.e., special) meaning formed at the level of V’ may induce the awkward sentence to make complete sense. Thus, the idiomatic nominative theme in the embedded clause cannot occupy the embedded null subject position coindexed with the matrix ECMed element. The idiomatic nominative theme is in the verbal complement position of the embedded clause of the ECM construction, which is the reason why the idiomatic meaning stays the same, even though the sentence is negated. The head Neg cannot block the head movement at the level of V’ since Neg is between T and v(or V).(Lee, 2016b)

Investigating Effects of Reading Strategy Instruction for Korean Adult EFL Students from Different Proficiency Levels

This study is an intervention study that observed Korean university students’ reading performance after the explicit reading strategy instruction. Total nine university students participated in this study. After a three-week explicit reading strategy instruction, students were asked to express their reading comprehension processes with a think-aloud protocol and a retelling task. After that, personal interviews were also conducted individually. The result showed that the explicit reading strategy instruction influenced all participants’ reading performance positively. More specifically, the students from the higher proficiency level used reading strategies they’ve learned more actively and appropriately than the students from the other levels. Intermediate and lower level students tried to use reading strategies they’ve learned during the strategy instruction, but not always successfully. In the future, a longitudinal study and a quantitative study with a large pool of subjects should be conducted to verify more tangible effects of reading strategy instruction for EFL students. Implications are also provided.

The Effect of Drama on Students’ Anxiety of Speaking in English

This study aims to examine the language anxiety levels of 27 university students, and investigates the effects of drama activities on their levels of speaking anxiety as well as possible factors contributing to their anxiety during the drama activities. The data were gathered by means of a questionnaire, and a reflective journal. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the level of anxiety. The results revealed that a majority of students felt anxiety when speaking English in class. Most students’ anxiety has been reduced to a low level through the use of drama activities. In addition, students expressed positive opinions about using drama activities in speaking English. Based on these findings, some useful classroom implications for using drama based activities for decreasing EFL learners’ speaking anxiety. However, due to small scale research it has limitations to be generalized. Thus, larger scale research could be suggested for future research.

Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategy Use in L2 Reading : Using Performance and Importance Analysis

This study addresses the issues of L2 learners’reading strategy use within the higher education context. 115 Korean students from four universities participated in this questionnaire study using the Survey of Reading Strategies(SORS). The participants’reported reading strategy use in L2 and perceived importance were quantitatively analyzed and discussed. Significant mean differences were found between performance and perceived importance across all the items, implying that learners consistently rated perceived importance higher than performance in L2 academic reading. Overall, the Problem-Solving Strategy ranked highest in both performance and importance, followed by Global Reading Strategy and then Support Strategy. Strategies such as ‘take notes while reading’are suggested as an area for further improvements in the strategy-based instruction classroom.
