The goals of the present study are to examine the levels of NNS teachers’ classroom communicative competence, and its relation of their English use in class. Data was collected from forty-seven(N=47) NNS secondary school English teachers and twelve(N=12) NS instructors who participated in the six-month intensive teacher training program in South Korea. The teacher trainees and NS instructors diagnosed trainees’ classroom communicative competence using two different instruments; 1) a proficiency guideline to the levels of the trainees’ four language skills(L/S/R/W) in classroom communicative competence, 2) a proficiency guideline to the levels of the trainees' specific language use for TEE class. The trainees also answered the proportion of their English use in class. The data analysis has shown that there were the significant relations between the diagnosis from both trainees and instructors on the trainees’ classroom communicative competence, and the proportion of trainees’ English use in class. Implications of the findings are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the semantic extension of English -er nominals from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The prototypical sense of the English nominating suffix -er is a professional human agent. First of all, we discuss the basic sense of -er nominals. We further investigate the metaphorical and metonimic meaning extension of the -er nominals from professional human agents to the domain of instrument, object, event, location, and animals․plants. Demonstrating that the English -er nominals are polysemous word whose meanings are conceptually and coherently related through metaphorical and metonimic links, we propose the semantic network of the polysemous -er nominals based on Langacker's(1991) semantic network model. The main point of this proposal is that the various meanings associated with polysemous words such as English -er nominals are conceptually related to each other in the networks of meaning, each with a central prototype and peripheral senses linked to the prototype.

The current study investigated the development of Korean infants’ ability to discriminate English sounds /r/ & /l/ using event-related potentials(ERP). The infants participated in an oddball task using English /ra/-/la/ contrast. For 5-7 month olds, the mean amplitudes of P150-250 responses to the deviant stimuli were significantly larger than those to the standard stimulus. By contrast, 12-15-month olds’ neural responses were not significantly different between the deviant and standard stimuli. These results provide additional evidence that infants' ability to perceive non-native sound contrasts declines toward the end of the first year of life. The current findings are discussed in terms of the developmental mechanisms responsible for processing native and nonnative speech sounds.

An increasing number of English loanwords in Korean texts are one of the heavy obstacles to the automatic analysis of Korean texts due to the absence of these words in existing electronic lexicons. This study aims at proposing a semantic classification of 2,300 English loanwords that we selected from Korean Electronic Loanword Dictionary DECO-ZNF(Nam, 2010). The principle used in the semantic classification of Korean common nouns DSeC-N has been adopted in this study as well. On the basis of our results, we expect to predict in what semantic domains we should expand loanword entries: loanwords in semantic classes of new products, food, and art appear more important in number. The experiment presented at the end of the paper shows that a corpus of cosmetic products contains English loanwords much more than that of political news. Note that unless we expand the loanword entries related to this domain, the performance of automatic analysis will be far from being satisfying

The purpose of this study is to examine the lexical variation and lexical density shown in writing of KFL learners. In summary, first, the language-specific TTR of NNS subjects was no more than 40% of all. Second, the rate of TTR was as follows: Vietnamese < Japanese < Chinese. Third, TTR was in inverse proportional to text-length. Fourth, the analysis of titled word/morpheme TTR showed various aspects from their languages. Fifth, spoken text and written text were told to have less and more than 40% of LD respectively(McCarthy, 1990), yet the Korean learners' LD did not exceed 40% although the learners' LD was written text. Thus the theory of Faerch(1984) which states LD was decided by text-type seems to be more persuasive. Sixth, it was not easy to identify NNS and NS when a text type of LD was similar. Seventh, comparing to common noun which has high proportion of LD rate of NNS, verb was two times lower than that of common noun. Eighth, LD rank of NNS was followed by common noun, verb, adjective and common adverb

The purpose of this paper is to explore Korean college students' perception toward TOEIC(Test of English for International Communication). While a small body of previous studies looks into TOEIC and Korean learners of English(KLE), their focus is not on Korean learners' perception toward TOEIC but on the development of effective TOEIC courses for KLE, learners' strategy and TOEIC, and the development of online TOEIC courses. To fill this lacuna in the literature, this study examines how KLE perceives TOEIC based on data collected both qualitatively from 20 college students and quantitatively from 652 college students. The data shows that Korean college students tend to view TOEIC as a means of pursuing their future careers rather than as an opportunity to test their English ability. Pedagogical implications for effective material/course development based on the result are discussed

In this paper, I explain what restrictions are imposed on sentences with '-kilay' and why. To do this, sentences with '-kilay' are grouped into three by mood. In declaratives ending with '-ta', '-kilay' means perceiving or realizing some situation in the antecedent clause, and the event of perceiving/realizing provides an occasion for the volitional action of the agent in the consequent clause. In questions and sentences ending with '-ci', '-kilay' does not show the properties that it shows in declaratives. It does not have the meaning of occasion, but that of reason, between the antecedent and consequent clauses. The relation of reason needs one agent who imposes it. always the hearer in questions. In sentences ending with '-ci', however, it needs two agents, one for the epistemic operator '-ci' and the other for the agent who imposes a relation of reason. They may not be the speaker, in which case inference gets involved. In all three, '-kilay' does not have narrower scope than other semantic operators

Questioning previous proposals that sluicing constructions detected in languages with overt wh-movement can be found in languages with optional wh-movement like Korean, this paper argues that what has been called sluicing constructions in Korean manifest critically different properties from those in English with respect to types of sluice, forms of sluice, and sensitivity to Island Effects. This also provides a novel view on the presence of 'be' in sluicing-like constructions based on its optionality of its presence. Expanding a view that canonical Island Effects are from processing difficulty, this paper argues that acceptability of sluicing-like constructions that include islands is graded depending on discourse context, morphological-semantic relevancy, and anti-ambiguity requirements

The aim of this paper is to study the incrementality of language processing from a psycholinguistic perspective. In particular, the paper in-depth studies the different variables that influence the normative order of attributive adjectives by looking into the normative order of attributive adjectives. Accordingly, the incrementality of semantic processing at semantic, functional and pragmatics level is primarily examined, followed by an experiment related to attributive adjectives. This paper reviews this experiment, showing that the online characteristic of eye movements provides a detailed profile of the processes that underlie real-time written language comprehension. According to the result, multi level information has already been considered at lexical level

This paper aims to analyze the keywords in the area of politics and their related words found in a large-scale newspaper corpus. These keywords and their related words can reflect the linguistic, social, and cultural changes in current Korean society(esp. with respect to politics). In order to analyze the changes and trends, we first extract several keywords in the political sections of four major newspapers which constitute the Trends 21 Corpus[2000-2009]. And then, by t-score analysis we extract the words related to the keywords. Once degrees of relatedness of words related to a keyword are measured by t-scores year by year, the increase or decrease of the relatedness of those words is analyzed first, by Mann-Kendall time-serial analysis and second, by regression analysis. We can summarize the changes of public interest in political situation in Korea as follows(through the years of 2000-2009). (a) Increase of the interest in ideology: "Jinbo"(the progressive), "Bosu"(the conservative), "Jungdo"(the middle), "Jwapa"(left wing), and "Upa"(right wing). (b) Changes of the interest in isms('-jueui'): Neo-liberalism, Liberalism, Pragmatism(increase) vs. Regionalism, Regional Emotion, Egoism, Authoritarianism(decrease). (c) Changes of the interest in political issues: Low-income class, Communication, Demonstration, Development(increase) vs. Reform, Corruption, Partisan(decrease). (d) Others: increase of the interest in Government, Constitutional Reform vs. decrease of the interest in North Korea, North Wind, Fairness

The object of this paper is to investigate changing word-forms and phonological transformation of 凸, which is assumed to be a pictograph of male sexual organ, under the assumption that Archaic Chinese 凸 as a root word has the same meaning with that of Korean. Based on Archaic Chinese reconstituted by several scholars, this paper studied Archaic Chinese 凸 and any other letters in detail. We established reflecting phoneme which our ancestors had pronounced when the Archaic Chinese had been permeated into Archaic Korean. We ensured that they were divided into [아], [어], [오], [우], [으], and they followed the rules on phonological transformation of Korean phonetics regularly. When the letters were changing their forms, they obtained new meanings. we discovered the presence of these forms in Ancient Korean, Middle Korean, Present Korean, and even in dialects. With this, basic letter 凸 turned out to be a Korean language, and its basic meaning might be 'male sexual organ', and its derivation meaning is 'long and thin', 'high', 'coming out', 'project', like penis. Also, we could identify the process of phonological transformation rules of 凸. These ensure that 凸 has been linked to present Korean from Archaic Korean

The grammaticality judgment test is a research instrument frequently used in second language acquisition studies. However, a number of studies raised an issue with grammaticality judgment data. Given that doubts exist regarding the reliability and validity of grammaticality judgments, the present study investigated grammaticality judgment data employed in a project done by the researcher. The examination was done following the suggestions previous studies proposed. The results of the data analyses showed that the grammaticality judgment tests were not found to manifest a high level of reliability. Fairly high internal consistency reliability suggested that they measured a single general trait. The response pattern analyses, however, indicated some doubts about the extent to which grammaticality judgment data represent learners’ grammatical knowledge. Finally, grammaticality judgment data were not validated by other measure of performance, the oral elicited imitation test. Results were discussed and limitations and suggestions for future research were provided

Notes on Depictive Secondary Predicates

This paper focuses on depictive secondary predication in English and aims to provide the restriction on depictive constructions. Depictive predicates can be divided into two kinds: subject-oriented and direct object-oriented depictives. There have been a handful of attempts to generalize the possible distribution of depictive secondary predicates. First, depictive secondary predication is regulated by a strict structural relation. The configurational c-command constraint comes into play. Second, the predication is defined in terms of thematic roles. Thematic constraints are imposed on what the subject of a depictive predicate can be. It is shown that depictive relation cannot be reduced to either a syntactic relation or a thematic relation. This paper suggests that the constraints on depictives should be captured in terms of linking event arguments of the matrix verb and the depictive predicate

This paper presents an analysis of the cross-linguistic typology of scrambling on the basis of the languages like German and Korean. Korean allows both long and short scrambling, while German allows only short scrambling. The guiding idea is that the different typology of scrambling is derived by different movement paths on the languages. I argue that differences in agreement result in different roles of Spec TP which in turn bring about different scambling patterns. To support my argument, I show cases where long scrambling has A-movement properties and suggest that Spec TP is an escape hatch for scrambling in Korean(Kim, 2011). From this observation, I propose that a finite clause with phi-agreement features forms a scrambling domain. Assuming that agreement features originate on the C head(Chomsky, 2005), the C[+Agr] head (i.e., C with phi-agreement features) forms a syntactic barrier for scrambling

The objective of the present study is to verify the derivation of M-implicature(Levinson, 2000) by hybrid words. According to Levinscon(2000), when an expression is marked or non-stereotypical, the recipients assume that the reference is marked or non-stereotypical, and hybrid words are supposed to be marked and to cause M-implicature in current research. In order to examine the cognitive process of the interpretation of marked expressions, gaze fixations are observed by using an eye tracker. The reading time and the number of times that expressions are read by the subjects were predicted to differ by the markedness of the expressions presented in the experiments. Consequently, in the results, the difference in the recognition of marked words and unmarked alternatives is considered to confirm the generation of M-implicature in current research

Negation has garnered considerable interest over last couple of decades in syntax since generative-transformational grammar. In the generative-transformational grammar, the meanings of negative main sentences with subordinate clauses and sentences with negations of the subordinate clause are the same. However, these two sentences certainly have different meanings and intentions why negations in different sites are so frequently used in our daily conversation. In this study, we investigate whether Neg-Raising interpretations are restricted to cases where they carry only the smallest functional load and whether NR interpretations are applied in Korean. Moreover, we categorize five types Korean verb which are regarded as generating NR interpretation to observe which verb type has the strongest NR interpretations, which type has the weakest or which one does not have them. To support the research, we use e-prime 2.0 tool for two experiments
