The purpose of this study is to investigate the lexical characteristics of tourism research paper abstracts and to identify major key research trends for the last 15 years. The three target corpora were compiled using the text files of all English abstracts of Journal of Tourism & Leisure Research from 2002 to 2006, from 2007 to 20011 and from 2012 to 2016 respectively. The reference corpus was made of the abstracts from 1989 to 1993. The frequent words of each corpus were identified and key words and absolute key words in each period were extracted by using WordSmith Tools 6.0. The results of the study show that frequent words and key words extracted are related to major tourism topics and key research trends which have reflected the changes of the research subjects over time. This study is expected to be helpful in understanding tourism research papers and tourism research trends.

This paper investigated the L2 acquisition of Korean causative case marking and syntactic complexity by L1 English speakers. The nominative causee can be marked only in syntactic causative (‘-ke hata’ causative). Forty L1 English speakers of Korean and twenty one Korean native speakers have participated in the study. The acceptability judgment task was conducted in order to assess the learners' knowledge on the case marking of causee in the causative construction. For the task, two types of case marking-nominative and accusative- were distributed in syntactic and morphological causative constructions. A total of 44 items were created based on 11 verbs. The results showed that L2 learners had lower acceptability on the causative sentences with nominative causee compared to Korean native speakers. This implicates that not only the intermediate learners of Korean but also the advanced learners failed to acquire the native like case marking due to lack of recognizing syntactic complexity on Korean causative and the relying on their L1 knowledge on English causative.

Over the past few decades a number of challenges have been made to the nature and distributions of FNQs in Korean and Japanese. Nonetheless, we find that many crucial questions still remain unanswered. In this paper, we lay down some minimalist assumptions and demonstrate that simply by combining these, all the lingering problems germane to the previous approaches can be eliminated. Additionally, a variety of puzzles that arise under the traditional A- or A’-movement all fall out nicely. The assumptions include Takahashi and Hulsey’s(2009) ‘Late Merger,’ Fox’s(2002) ‘LF-interpretability’ and our own proposal of the Split DP Hypothesis, which is an elaboration of Sportiche's(2005) ‘Split DP.’ Insofar as the current analysis is sustained, it will supply empirical evidence in support of the theoretical assumptions that we posithere, while further clarifying some residual problems in the minimalist analysis of movement .

The present study sought to explore the aspects of Korean-English translation of bad words and English learners’ receptiveness for Korean-English translation of bad words. 78 college learners participated in the study and two questionnaires were administered. The results show that Korean bad words ‘Sakki’ and ‘Sibal’ have been translated with various English swearwords and that the offensiveness of ‘Sibal’ is much higher than that of ‘Sakki“. In addition, the receptiveness for Korean-English translation of bad words is comparatively higher and that when power and distance are involved in the discourse with bad words, the receptiveness for Korean-English translation of bad words would change a little. The directions of further studies were discussed with the limitations of this study.

Through this analysis, It also aims to seek the method of analysis of culture with linguistic studies. For this purpose, the researcher analyzed word inner order of the compound formed by noun, ‘clothes’. In particular, this article will deal with vocabulary related to ‘clothes’, which is included in Standard Korean Language Dictionary. First of all, all of the headwords containing ‘clothes’ are surveyed through complete enumeration. The purpose of this study is to discover the conceptual profiles of Korean SADNESS expressions, sulphum(‘슬픔’), seleum(‘서러움’), and han(‘한’), based on their usage patterns. Quantitative corpus-based methodology (Glynn 2014b, Krawczak 2014) is employed: Data are extracted from Sejong Corpus with their contexts and annotated for their behaviour; With the aid of correspondence analysis, usage patterns across the data are identified; The descriptive accuracy of the result is confirmed by testing its predictive power. It is revealed that the three lexical categories show different usage patterns regarding when the cause of the emotion occurs, whether the emotion is expressed outwardly and whether the cause is internal or external: Sulphum profiles the non-specific time of the cause, not-expressing –the-emotion, and the external cause; Seleum profiles the present time of the cause, expressing-the-emotion, and the internal cause: Han profiles the past or past-to-present time of the cause, but neither expressing-the-emotion nor the internal cause.

Since Lakoff and Johnson(1980), many researchers have paid a lot of attention to observing conceptual metaphors and conceptual metonymies in our everyday language. However, as Lakoff and Johnson(1980) emphasize, since conceptual metaphors and metonymies shape and structure our conceptual system, they can also be observed in many other areas such as our actions and visual images. Some researchers including Forceville have paid attention to visual metaphors in advertisements. However, metonymies in visual images have received little attention. To bridge the gap, this paper observes various metonymies in visual images of 152 anti-smoking advertisements. The result shows that anti-smoking advertisements utilize the EFFECT FOR CAUSE and INSTRUMENT FOR EVENT metonymies most frequently and in many cases metonymy chains. This is due to the fact that abstract concepts have to be visually expressed in order to deliver a complicated message quickly.

This paper is intended to develop a word list that helps engineering students with engineering vocabulary frequently used across different disciplines. For this goal, an Engineering English Corpus (EEC) including around 4,000,000 running words was compiled and constructed from 40 textbooks commonly used in 8 engineering disciplines: chemical, computer, electrical, electronics, environmental, industrial, materials science and mechanical. This paper identified a total of 1,170 word families comprised of General Service List (GSL), Academic Word List (AWL) and Technical Word List (TWL) through two criteria such as frequency and range. In detail, the cut-off frequency of GSL and AWL was more than 100 times and the range was at least 10 times in all 8 disciplines exclusive of TWL. The result of the analysis showed that 1) not all words in GSL and AWL were used frequently in the EEC; 2) GSL, AWL and TWL could be learned and taught regardless of the pre-determined order; 3) the created engineering English word list could meet the basic need of engineering students.

In this paper, the importance of formative assessment for monitoring the progress of ESL(English As a Second Language)/EFL(English As a Foreign Language) students in the area of early literacy and reading skills was discussed. It is important to point out that data from General Outcome Measures such as DIBELS(Dynamic Measurement Early Literacy Skills) and the PELI(Preschool Early Literacy Indicators) should never be used alone but always in conjunction with other assessment and/or observational data that an educator has when making educational decisions for students. In addition, the powerful predictive validity of the measures does not mean that their content should become the sole components of our ESL/EFL instruction. Each DIBELS/PELI measure is an indicator and represents a broader sequence of skills to be taught. The measures are designed to be brief so that teaching doesn’t have to be. The thoughtful utilization of formative assessment data can help teachers to make reliable and valid decisions about which students may need additional instructional support and to provide the assistance necessary to help all ESL/EFL students to achieve proficiency in speaking and reading in English.
