The purpose of this paper is to analyze various meanings of the English spatial prepositions at, on and in from the cognitive linguistic perspective. The core meanings can be summarized as follows: In [X at Y], at abstracts Y into a point and then coincides the point with X. In [X on Y], on represents that X contacts Y. In [X in Y], in represents that X is included in Y. We further show that the core meanings of these prepositions are temporally and abstractly extended in different contexts. The extended meaning of at includes the temporal coincidence, role and function, activity, and stimulus and response, etc. The extended meaning of on includes temporal contact, dependence, effect, progress, repetition, and membership, etc. The extended meaning of in includes temporal inclusion, containment in an abstract domain, state, activity/employment, and wearing, etc. Arguing that prepositions are polysemous, we propose the semantic network of the prepositions based on Langacker's(1987, 1991, 2000) semantic network model. The main point of this proposal is that the core meanings of these prepositions appear to be systematically extended from a spatial domain to temporal and abstract domains in the networks of meaning.

This study aims to analyze the Korean greeting expressions in daily life in Korea. In particular, this study focuses on meeting situations and departing situations in daily conversations among Korean people. In general, the communication between humans includes verbal communication and nonverbal communication. This study considers sociolinguistic features in each type based on generation and gender differences. Although general trend could be identified through the analysis or real conversation situations, more research can be necessary to find additional features of korean greeting expressions in special situations.

The purpose of this study is to inquire into the effect of Humboldt's thought of language on the idealogy of modern Japanese language. Ueda who completed the idealogy of modern Japanese language said that language is the expression of thought and emotion in the mind of person who uses that language and it inscribes the spirit of a nation. His thought is reflected in Humboldt's thought of language(Weltansicht). In order to draw a moment of identity in the language he accepted Humbodt's thought of language organism. Therefore the ideology of modern Japanese language is completed by Ueda who accepted Humboldt's thought of language.

Utilizing a national survey, this study examines current elementary teachers' perception of the elementary English teacher training program. 1,248 teachers responded including 642 English specialist teachers and 606 non-English specialist teachers. Among them, 330 took advanced courses in English education and 911 took advanced courses in other majors. There are five major findings. First, all groups of teachers responded that understanding and use of English teaching methodology and fluent English proficiency are the two most important requirements to be English specialist teachers. Second, teachers responded positively to the effectiveness of their elementary teacher training programs at their respective colleges. Third, teachers responded positively to the use of English in the instruction of advanced courses in English education. Fourth, teachers responded positively to the effectiveness of teaching practicums. Fifth, teachers responded negatively to the installment of a separate teacher training program in order to train future elementary English specialists. Overall, teachers tend to be satisfied with their college teacher training programs. Nevertheless, findings suggest that curriculum revision is strongly recommended to strengthen the quality of the teacher training program and to improve teachers' English proficiency.

This paper surveys 6,490 words selected from WordNavigator.com to see what research issues can be found in the data. The survey shows that the actual data do not conform to the theoretical predictions. They are the absence of theoretically possible combinations such as *{-ish}{-ity} and *{-ate}{-ity}, the restricted distribution of {-ous} after {-ity} and the peculiarities of {-ness} in that it can be added not only to adjectives but also to other parts of speech as in such words as keyness and aboutness. These observations defy an easy explanation in the frameworks of Lexical Morphology. However, this paper shows that the affix theories introduced by Fabb(1988), Hay and Plag(2004), and others along with the adoption of the optimality theory approach can give proper explanations to these apparent problems and can present a consistent and comprehensive analysis of the issues.

This study examines the role of F0 in marking the English voicing contrast and different stress types in the speech by native speakers and Korean learners of English. F0 is found as an important acoustic correlate in the Korean laryngeal contrast, suggested as tonogenesis, and thus distinct use of F0 is predicted in the specification of English segmental and suprasegmental features by Korean speakers. Voice Onset Time, voicing duration, and F0 were measured from the speech of 20 native speakers and 55 Korean speakers to measure the acoustic variation. The results confirm the distinctive use of F0 by Korean speakers in comparison to the native English speakers though it is not very systematic. The Korean speakers with deviation from the native speakers tend to use F0 more consistently as an acoustic correlate of the English voicing contrast and lexical stress. The stress difference between compounds and noun phrases is marked mainly by F0 in the group of native speakers whereas the nonnative speakers mark the phrasal accent with higher F0 and longer duration. Finally the Korean subjects tend to mark the sentence stress with different pitch values, but the native speakers seem to specify the focal accent with larger pitch changes in the focused syllable.

The present study explored the relative efficacy of English and Korean mediated lectures in content learning(operationalized as the number of recalled idea units) and vocabulary acquisition(operationalized as the number of newly learned academic terms). The participants were assigned to either an English-mediated(EM) or a Korean-mediated(KM) lecture condition. They watched a videotaped lecture corresponding to their lecture condition, and then responded to a battery of free recall and cloze tests. The major findings are as follows. First, analysis of free recall data shows that students in the KM condition outperformed their counterparts in the EM condition to a statistically significant degree, with a large effect size detected(d=0.75). Second, analysis of the cloze test results indicate that the mean scores of the two groups did not differ significantly, with a negligible effect size observed(d=-0.02). The empirical evidence delineating from this study demonstrates the first evidence with regard to the potential limitations of EM lectures for Korean EFL undergraduate students.

Examining the metaphors we use to discuss a certain topic can shed light on how we feel about that topic beyond the words themselves. Metaphor analysis as a type of discourse analysis is well established. Metaphor analysis applied to the discourse of education has revolved around certain conceptual metaphors such as, ‘students are customers / clients / products / employees’, ‘education is a service’, and other business related metaphors. This paper examines the use of metaphor in 415 articles concerning English education in Korea taken from two major English-language Korean newspapers over the past five years. The results show that the most popular metaphors in regards to the topic are, ‘English education is a burden or weight’, ‘English education is an object crammed into a container’, ‘English education is a stress or strain’, and ‘English education is a fever’. These are not generally positive associations. Other metaphors identified in this study can be mostly categorized as negative. These findings can tell us a great deal about attitudes, explicit and implicit, towards English education in South Korea

The current study explores how ESL students in an international high school in East Asia position themselves after reading a politically-oriented English news article about the Taiwan Straits from a Mainland China perspective. The news article and the students’ responses were collected and analyzed with a corpus-based discourse analysis approach. The analysis revealed three primary findings: (1) the news article represents distinct views about the issue of the Taiwan Straits; (2) the ESL readers identified these distinct views; and (3) the cultural and social backgrounds of the ESL readers play a crucial role in their position and evaluation of the news article.
