경제담론 상에 나타난 은유표현의 인지언어학적 연구

This paper investigates the use of metaphors in economic discourses within the framework of the conceptual metaphor theory and explores how expressions are metaphorically used in various economic contexts in the field of economy. Following Lakoff and Johnson(1980), metaphor is taken to be understanding and experiencing one conceptual domain experience in terms of another domain of experience. Economy has a close relationship with human beings and human society. It is an important aspect of people’s life, so that in everyday speech people speak of economy and related topics. Many metaphorical expressions about economic discourses are classified into several categories; i.e., living organism, machine, competition, container, and journey. Based on a cognitive analysis of conceptual metaphors, in this paper we argue that abstract economic concepts and complex economic phenomena are understood and conceptualized in terms of plants.

Functional typological studies such as Givón(1984, 2001) and Kim(2015) show that a certain semantic domain may be under-coded in one language while it may be over-coded in another language; the same semantic domain may be encoded by one grammatical device in one language while encoded by more than one grammatical device in another language. This study compares English and Korean grammatical devices encoding semantic domains in the phases of the event, revealing that the initial phase of the event is over-coded in Korean while the final phase is over-coded in English. It also argues that these two different coding patterns are closely related to the typological characteristics of the two languages: (i) English has the same case marker for Associative and Instrumental cases while Korean has two distinct markers for them; and (ii) English allows an inanimate subject in the prototypical transitive clauses while Korean does not. These two different coding systems reflect the two different cultures’ way of thinking: Koreans tend to focus the participant’s inherent mental and physical capacity while English speaking people tend to focus the participant’s real role and the resultative state of the event



영화포스터 번역 전략 : 권력거리를 중심으로

This paper examines how power distance affects the translation of movie posters. Deriving from Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory, power distance is the extent to which people accept unequally distributed power. I assume that power distance is closely related to collectivism and uncertainty avoidance, affecting the translation of movie posters in certain ways. For this study, 90 pairs of American movie posters and their Korean-translated movie poster counterparts are selected for data analysis. This analysis is divided into three categories: translation of the headline, the number of text elements, and appeal of the headline. The results suggest the movie poster translation reflects Korean culture through high power distance, collectivism, and high uncertainty avoidance. In addition, the translation of posters not only serves as the consideration of power distance, but also simultaneously constitutes power distance through the posters.

This article investigates the syntactic structure and the meaning of English Double Object Construction(DOC), especially concentrating on those of its 1st object. The basic property of DOC this article assumes is that it has an Appl above the VP, which merges with the 1st object of DOC and contributes to the appropriate structure of DOC sentences. And it is also assumed that this merge operation induces the unvalued theta feature of Appl and the valued theta feature of the 1st object of DOC, which is acquired in the conceptual structure before entering the merge operation, to be checked. This checking process between the unvalued theta feature and the valued theta feature makes it plausible that the 1st object of DOC can have various meanings that cannot be categorized as one theta role.

The purpose of this study is to analyze Korean conceptualization of thinking(hereafter ) with respect to the thesis of embodied cognition, which emphasizes bodily groundedness and social situatedness in conceptualization. To do this, this paper examined whether the mappings for and the image schematic extensions of the conceptual metaphors of thinking are found, which characteristics they have, and whether and how physical organs are utilized in . Physical groundedness of Korean was revealed in three ways: Korean shows diverse mappings of the thinking metaphors; The metaphors combine productively with image schemata; Korean also exploits physical organs in . Socio-cultural situatedness of Korean was identified in the metaphors of thinking and in its exploitation of physical organs: Korean characteristics of eating and farming are reflected in the thinking metaphors and cultural specificity of is shown in the cultural metaphor of ; Korean uses two physical organs in , head and heart, which shows that Korean considers some types of thinking as having the characteristics of the feeling.

Pseudogapping is conceived to be closely related to two other elliptical constructions, VP Ellipsis and Gapping. Pseudogapping is overall more restricted in its distribution than VP Ellipsis, not Gapping. It was frequently claimed that Pseudogapping should be derived as VP Ellipsis, with the remnant having moved out of the VP before deletion. This paper aims to take a critical look at two previous approaches of Pseudogapping, Jayaseelan's(1990) Heavy NP Shift and Lasnik's(1995, 1999) Overt Object Shift, and attempts a new approach to the derivation of Pseudogapping on the basis of Chomsky's(2013) Labeling Algorithm(LA). To guarantee the legitimate derivation of Pseudogapping, this paper will suggest that three assumptions should be obligatorily satisfied such as Focus Phrase(FP) between TP and vP layer, a Focus feature on the Pseudogapping remnant, and vP Identity Requirement between antecedent clause and target clause.



An Analysis of ELT Textbooks : Spoken Grammar Features

The present study conducts an analysis of ELT textbooks used in the EFL context. The investigation consists of two parts. First, features of spoken grammar of English are identified through a literature review and then the selected ELT textbooks are analyzed using those features to find out which spoken grammar features and how they are integrated in them. Although all the textbooks investigated included spoken grammar features in one way or another, they tended to emphasize particles(oh, well) or phrasal chunks(you know, I mean) over syntactic conversational structures. Another noteworthy finding was that their frequency and range also increase as the level of textbooks increases. The study therefore suggests that those textbooks have not presented spoken grammar features adequately enough with a limited view of them and that there is a concern that some learners who do not continue to take upper level classes where advanced level textbooks are used may not have a chance to encounter them. Finally, the study concludes with some arguments for inclusion of spoken grammar features in ELT textbooks and other teaching materials.



The Effectiveness of Individual Conferencing for Corrective Feedback concerning Grammar Instruction

The present study was initiated in order to understand the impact of corrective feedback(CF) with and without individual conferences, given after formative assessments concerning the learning of grammar. A total of 35 college students participated, and they were randomly assigned to the control group and the experimental group. The findings showed that the scores of the posttest of the two groups were higher than the pretest. However, the mean score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. The results imply that the CF itself was effective for grammar learning. Even more effective was the combination of the CF with the individual conferences. The individual conferences, added to the explicit written comments with respect to the formative assessment, proved to be the keys to provide the students with the opportunities for clarification and questions. Additionally, the results also showed that the formative assessment enabled the students to check their progress and their comprehension of grammar in classes which, in turn, aided the students in learning grammar more effectively.



A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Korean Address Term, ‘ajumma’

The purpose of this paper is to provide a preliminary examination into the sociocultural connotations of a distinctive address(or reference) term in Korean. Studying the terms of address embedded in a society reveal social relationships between speaker and addressee explicitly or implicitly. Ajumma is one of address terms, which is commonly used to address/refer to married women in Korea; yet it has negative connotations against women. In order to explore the Korean society through language practices, I conducted a group interview of young married women living in a small U.S town and tried to examine their attitudes toward ajumma. The analysis showed that the predominant perception on ajumma found in mainstream Korea remained the same in this community. However, ajumma seemed to be also functioning as young married women's solidarity and intimacy. This paper provides language users with the opportunity to reexamine and reflect their language practices through the address term, ajumma.



Korean EFL Learners' Use of to-infinitival and Gerundial Verb Complementation : A Constructionist Approach

to-infinitival and gerundial verb complementation patterns in English are known to pose particular difficulties to English as a foreign language(EFL) learners as there are often no equivalents in their mother tongue(L1) and seem no explicit rules governing the choice between the two patterns. The present study set out to examine main verbs co-occurring with either complementation pattern in a corpus of argumentative essays written by Korean university students. Specifically, the study identified distinctive collexemes(DC) or verbs distinctively attracted to one complementation pattern over the other and compared the extracted DCs with those from a comparable native speaker(NS) corpus. Results showed that while the Korean EFL learners were overall able to select verbs semantically compatible to either complementation construction, the direction and strength of verb-construction association in learner data deviated from the NS data indicating the Korean EFL learners’ lack of idiomaticity in collostructional selection. This paper concludes by discussing pedagogical and research implications.
