Simplification of consonant clusters is one of the most challenging opacities in English phonological changes. The past LP analyzed this opacity with the derivations of the rules. But this paper analyzes this opacity with Lee’s(2009) markedness oriented candidate chains(M-CC) and precedence constraint. It is the revision of McCarthy’s(2006a, 2007) OT-CC(faithfulness oriented candidate chains and precedence constraint). In this paper I will show the derivational effect without derivational processes in the simplification of consonant clusters.

American English, among linguistic variants of English, possesses a dominant status in Korea as a medium of international communication and a subject of English teaching. However, recent interests to cultural diversity and a new TOEIC system throw some light on other dialects of English such as British, Canadian or Australian English. This study investigates college students’ views and learnability on the pronunciation of British English in terms of survey and listening tests. A total of 124 college students who were taking a Phonetics course participated in the research. In class, they were taught theoretical linguistic aspects of two variants of English such as differences and similarities of British and American English, and practiced their pronunciation and intonation. Pre- and post- listening tests were administered to measure the students’ improvement in listening skills. Survey was carried out in the aftermath of the course to examine how their views were affected on British vs. American English. According to the survey, the subjects considered American English more natural, friendly, familiar, and useful than British English, having been more exposed to the former. Interestingly, they have a desire to learn other variants of English in the globe. The listening test result revealed that subjects’ listening skill was significantly improved after class. The current study indicates that the subject of teaching English should not be limited to American English and that English educators should introduce a new pedagogical approach to fulfill the students’ growing interests to other variants of English and enhance their communicative English skills.

This paper is aimed at analyzing the feature inheritance system by verb movement in the 13c-Medieval French(MedF). To begin with, I adopted the feature inheritance system of Chomsky(2008) and the modified system of Goto(2008). After having applied these proposals in French constructions, I insisted that these systems be rewritten to meet parametric variations of French language. The reason why I modified these proposals is because the C-T feature inheritance leads the asymmetry of spell-out domains. Second, I verified that the word order of MedF is based on either the verb movement to C triggered by the tense feature which is not inherited to T, or the XP-movement to Spec-CP triggered by phi-features remaining in C. Finally, I observed that the feature inheritance and parallel movement proposed by Chomsky(2008) and the modified system can explain the word order variation of MedF in an appropriate manner.

In the traditional grammar, the constructions with both impersonal SE and passive SE are distinguished from the agreement on the verb in direct object position. However, these studies cannot explain various examples of that constructions and the students suffer difficulties to learn it. That it to say, the education of the constructions with both impersonal SE and passive SE based on this point of view shows many problems. The purpose of this paper is to examine the properties of the clitic SE in the constructions, and to apply that reanalysis to the education of the grammar. In this study, I propose that, in this constructions, the EPP is satisfied optimally by adjunct of the clitic SE, in addition to the Movement of the verb to T. The relevant analysis is argued for in the context of the Minimalist Program(Chomsky, 1995)

The purpose of this study is to explore relationship between EFL students’ perceptions of and preference for teacher feedback and their motivation for learning English. Seventy-two undergraduate students participated and responded to the survey instrument designed to answer the research questions for this study. The findings revealed that the participants demonstrated strong motivation to receive feedback for their writing. Also, those who are highly motivated in learning English expected to get more feedback than those who are not. In addition, regardless of the participants’ level of motivation, the students showed strong preference for error correction for grammatical errors followed by word usage. However, the participants’ preference for error correction related to word usage is as high as that of grammatical error correction. Lastly, the findings indicated that both highly motivated and less motivated participants prefer explicit feedback to implicit feedback.

This study sees there are three characteristics when translating film dialogues into another language, simplification, standardization, and neutralization. These characteristics are inevitable due to the time and space constraints in audio-visual translation-subtitling. The problem is today’s language runs in opposite direction. People increasingly use marked expressions. Films, which reflect real life of people, absorb these marked speeches. This study categorized the marked speech into three, dialects, emotionally charged words, and culture-bound words. This paper suggests the strategies to deliver markedness of these types of words into more functionally equivalent words, analyzing Korean and English subtitles of a movie, ‘Meet the In-laws’(2011), whose dialogues feature marked speech. Based on this movie, Dialects of ST were translated using specific vocabularies, non-grammatical expression, or marked spelling. Emotionally charged words showed a tendency to be omitted or weakened. This study suggests translation strategies for culture-bound words, such as loan, calque, explicitation, transposition, omission, and lexical recreation. This study emphasizes the importance of translation as the bridge of cultures and countries especially in the field of subtitling

The purpose of this study is to identify causes for the failure to successfully implement Korean Romanization System since the National Institute of the Korean Language proclaimed the government Revised Romanization System in 2000. In reality, more confusion and inconsistencies have increased with time. The findings of this paper itemize the causes into four categories from general linguistic point of view. The first is that the system has caused confusion among users by regarding Romanization system as an English writing system. The second is that the system requires the users to understand the phonetic forms in which most of the Korean phonological rules are applied. The third is correspondence between Romanized letters and the Korean alphabet, which causes confusion among users in that the Korean alphabet is represented into diversified and complicated Roman letters. The fourth is that no balance is kept in delineating phonetic representations in terms of phonetic and phonemic transcription. To ensure the stable use of Korean Romanization System, it is critical that these four problems be raised. The problems discussed in this paper will be helpful not only to stabilize the system but also for system revision and usage

This study investigated the factor structure of the listening and reading sections of a TOEIC practice test using a bifactor model and a two-tier model that are based on a full-information item factor analysis. The data was drawn from 3158 college students’ responses to a TOEIC practice test. The results showed that the listening factor is essentially unidimensional whereas the reading factor is bidimensional: one primary factor for reading comprehension and a minor factor for vocabulary and grammar. The analyses also suggested that the listening and reading factors are highly correlated but distinctive skills. Subsequently these factor structures were compared and contrasted to the results from previous validation studies of the TOEIC test in the literature, Finally pedagogical implications were discussed

This study investigated how students co-constructed text meanings through collaborative reading and also the students’ perceptions on group work. Forty-one students participated in this study. These students were divided into 11 different groups and asked to translate reading texts with their group members. They were required to videotape their work on DVDs. The eight DVDs(except 3 with technical problems) were transcribed. In addition, a survey was conducted to look at participants’ reactions to the group work. Further information about the group reading was gathered by email exchanges. This study, throughout the analysis, found that the students co-constructed text meanings by 1)building vocabulary words they did not know before the reading; 2)determining text meanings using context through the act of reading; and 3)negotiating text meanings by understanding sentence and grammatical structures. The participants’ perceptions to the group work was positive. The findings imply that learning vocabulary and grammar in reading contexts are one of the effective reading instructions, and present how reading teachers should teach reading. The study also suggest teachers’ careful plan for group work

Notes on the Intervention Paradox

In this paper, we explore the intervention paradox in a range of A-movement constructions in English, French, and Italian. Traditionally, the interaction between raising and PP experiencers has been explained as a defective intervention constraint in Chomsky(2000). However, the defective intervention constraint cannot fully explain the intervention paradox. To explain the intervention paradox, we propose that the focus property of PP experiencers can explain the intervention paradox. That is, we assume that PP experiencers with the contrastive focus reading should be moved into TP-internal Focus Phrase, as in English raising constructions, but those without the contrastive focus reading cannot, as in French and Italian. Thus, PP experiencers in Italian raising constructions are in A-positions, which are visible in A-movement, causing the intervention effect. However, those in English raising constructions are in the Spec of TP-internal Focus Phrase, which is A'-position. Hence, this allows the embedded TP subjects to move to the Spec of the matrix TP without any intervention effect of PP experiencers

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether adverbial adjuncts can scramble, as other arguments do. In order to argue for this, I will suggest that adjunct scrambling should obey the adjunct scope constraint condition and that since adverbial adjuncts keep their hierarchial order, adjunct scrambling should also be ruled-in Relativized Minimality. The so-called -ka/-(n)un or -ga/-wa asymmetry will be examined as well. To combine this asymmetry into our suggested framework, we propose that there are two types of scrambling: the proper scrambling and the topicalized scrambling.
