Interjections are universal across languages, but they have received scant attention in the literature to date, due to their multifunctional and polysemic nature. In the process of translating any of these units, the translator is required to identify, evaluate, and take account the context, in order to fulfill the specific functions in the given text. Against this backdrop, this study explores the functions of the interjection oh in a corpus comprised of four English G-rated movies, and it compares their Korean subtitled and dubbed translations. After identifying the functions of this unit in the original English subtitles, and after attempting a classification, the translation strategies used are discussed, focusing on the differences between subtitling and dubbing. The results show that although omission occurred far more often in subtitled translations, the English interjection oh was translated into more diverse corresponding Korean expressions in subtitling, compared to dubbed translations. The study suggests directions for further studies, considering its limitations.

The present study examined whether Korean listeners perceive non-phonemic stop-fricative contrasts differently as a function of direction of stimulus presentation at a short inter-stimulus interval(ISI). Korean listeners were tested with English stop-fricative /pas/-/fas/, /bas/-/vas/ and /das/-/ðas/ contrasts at an ISI of 300ms using a same-different AX discrimination task. Korean listeners more accurately discriminated changes from fricatives to stops than changes from stops to fricatives for all three contrasts. The observed directional asymmetries suggest that Korean listeners do not perceive stops and fricatives equally and they have perceptual difficultly in discriminating English stops and fricatives. Additionally, performance asymmetries were also found for same pairs. The findings are further discussed in relation to previously reported data on Korean listeners’ assimilation of English stops and fricatives.

This study aims to provide a plausible explanation for the Korean front vowel merger of the high-mid vowel /e/ and the low-mid vowel /ε/. This vowel merger was found mainly in the speech and writing patterns of the Kyungsang dialect but it has now spread into the more standard Seoul Korean. Increasingly, younger generations fail to distinguish between the two vowels, and its effect is visible in written forms as well. One of the main reasons for this merger is from their phonetic obscurity due to the lack of difference between F1 and F2. Another reason for the merger stems from the semantic and functional similarities. Most of the minimal pairs with the distinctive vowels are from the same grammatical category and have similar function. Moreover, in most cases, their pitch and intonation are also alike. These similarities accelerate the merger, and more and more words with the mid-front vowels become ambiguous.

This study aims to distinguish between ‘Afraid to V’ and ‘Afraid of V-ing’ using corpus-based collocation and ‘Binary Opposition(BO) Strategy, proposed by Kim(2014), to distinguish a pair of lexical/grammatical near-synonyms. The basic idea of BO is that in order to distinguish effectively between a pair of near-synonyms, the focus should be on contextual BO features such as [part vs. whole], [cause vs. effect], and [causative vs. non-causative]. The results of this study show that ‘Afraid to V’ and ‘Afraid of V-ing’ are distinguished in the context of opposite features such as [Voluntary vs. Involuntary], [Before vs. After], [Result vs. Cause], Temporary vs. Usual] and [Dynamic vs. Static]

The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlational validity between reading competency and the Lexile system in elementary school students' English reading. To do this, the research examines 3rd - 6th grade students in Busan by adapting the DIBELS Next(The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) program, which is designed to be short fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. The results are as follows; DIBELS reading composite score, and accuracy have strong positive correlations with the Lexile index system. However, the result shows that there’s no positive correlation between NWF(Nonsense Word Fluency), WC(Word Correct) retelling in DORF(DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency), retelling and Lexile index system. Based on the findings, the research suggests how to effectively improve English reading efficacy in terms of application of the Lexile system in Korea. The educational implications were discussed in the context of the educational policy making process and reading environment for Korean elementary school students.

The purpose of this study is to explore how English nasals have unique property of preserving manner feature, so they can not be the target of manner assimilation even though they experience place assimilation. This paper argues that the reason for preserving nasals is due to sufficient feature perceptual cues that English nasals carry. In the universal perceptibility scales, stops are ranked higher than nasals, but this paper insists that the opposite is true in English. Stops are more frequent target of assimilation than nasals. Furthermore the reason why a certain feature is assimilated is not because place assimilation depends on preserving the rank of manner feature but because manner and place features are working separately from each other. Therefore, we propose each of the preserving ranks of place and manner feature in English. To show that nasals have higher preserving rank, we compare and analyze perceptibilities of each features with perceptual constraints in a cluster C1C2 where assimilation occurs

The purpose of the present study is to show the similarities and differences in expressivity of positive happy feelings between Korea and Japan from a cross-cultural point of view. Based on a statistical analysis of the data collected through the method of Display Rule Assessment Inventory, this study testifies several assumptions regarding how people in different cultures express their emotions of happiness. The findings show that a traditional rigid individualism/collectivism dichotomic approach to expressivity of emotions may not hold in our case. Instead it is proposed that more fine-grained factors should be considered. Finally, the socio-cultural implications of our findings are discussed within Hofstede’s cultural theory.

This paper studies how English 2nd person pronouns are rendered in Korean subtitles. In order to examine the pronouns, we collected data from Hyowon AVT Corpus built by the English Language and Literature Department at Pusan National University. Three thousand two hundred eighty-eight(3,288) tokens of ‘you/your’ are collected from 10 movies released in the year 2000 or later. The tokens are coded by 3 categories: Ommission, Correspondence, and Shift. The 2nd person pronouns coded into Shift are further categorized into four types of Shift within the framework of Catford’s Shift Theory. Results show that 85.6% of subjective pronouns are not translated, i.e., Ommission. The current study reveals that a number of accusatives tend to be translated into adverbial pronouns in Korean. This paper also has explored the usage of ‘tangsin’ in subtitles to see how the word, of which meanings seem to be changing over centuries, is used in subtitles. This serves as a pilot study for further research on current usages of ‘tangsin’

This paper reviews the proposals on the constraint combination and show evidence of the proposals to ban the markedness-faithfulness constraint combination. Three types of constraint combination, CAP-junction, CUP-junction and IF-junction, have been reviewed along with their roles in analyzing actual linguistic data. It is shown that contrary to some proposals in the literature, the markedness-faithfulness constraint combination can be dispensed with. This paper focuses on the data that were previously thought to argue for the necessity of the markedness and faithfulness combination in CUP-junction and IF-junction and presents alternative analyses without resorting to the markedness-faithfulness combination, which can systematically restrict the combinability and explain the paradigmatic gaps in constraint combination.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between Korean body-part idiomatic expressions that are reflected by speaker's culture, customs, and social background, etc and conversation for Korean learners. Intercultural teaching-learning methods developed by the educational list of body-part idiomatic expressions are proposed in this study. Idiomatic expressions are largely being used in language communities and these have two or more then two words combined, meaning different from the original definitions of each word. On this account, foreign learners tend to experience difficulties in learning due to different or insufficient cultural prerequisites contained behind the language. Thus, we reviewed some characteristics of Korean body-part idiomatic expressions and pointed out a necessities of education for foreign learners. In addition, we explored an intercultural education theory in terms of idiomatic expressions under cultural prerequisites. On the basis of this, we proposed a list of Korean body-part idiomatic expressions and intercultural teaching-learning methods. .

This research investigated the difference of ability to use diminishers, which have been regarded as synonyms due to similar meanings, between Korean English learners and native English speakers. Additionally, it was explored whether or not Koreans and native English speakers have different preferences. It was confirmed that three groups(advanced, intermediate and novice) of Korean English learners, divided according to English proficiency, had significant differences in ability of using diminishers compared to that of native English speakers. As for Korean English learners, the higher the English proficiency, the higher the ability of using diminishers. Teaching diminishers along with collocation would help non-native English speakers communicate with English native speakers more naturally with abundant expressions. Thus, using teaching and learning tools with a diminisher collocation corpus can help communication with English native speakers in more natural and colorful expressions

This paper is designed to explore the keywords and the structural features of 4-word lexical bundles in two corpora through Scott's(2015) WordSmith Tools 6.0. A target corpus includes two sub-corpora, Shakespeare Drama Corpus(SDC) and Bernard Shaw Drama Corpus(BSDC), and a reference corpus is BNC baby. SDC consists of around 820,000 words compiled from 37 plays, BSDC includes around 930,000 words compiled from 31 plays and BNC baby has around 4 million words. The result of analysis shows that 1) a target corpus has remarkably distinct lexical features from a reference corpus in terms of keywords; 2) a comparative study of lexical bundles between BSDC and BNC baby shows the similar features in spite of their disparateness; 3) STTR(Standardized Type/Token Ratio) of a target corpus shows much higher than that of a reference corpus and it implies that there is the distinctiveness of a target corpus

This paper is mainly designed to analyze light verbs (make, take, get) in terms of frequency and a variety of collocation types based on three corpora. The corpora are composed of a nonnative learner corpus(Pusan University Learner Corpus, PULC) and two native learner corpora(British University Learner Corpus, BULC, and American University Learner Corpus, AULC). In detail, PULC consists of 96,052 words, BULC includes 95,467 words and AULC has 96,787 words. A corpus analysis program, WordSmith Tools 6.0 is utilized to extract proper materials from the corpora. The result of the analysis shows that 1) from a perspective of frequency, make is the most frequently used verb and the frequency order of the other two verbs is slightly different among corpora; 2) among a range of collocation patterns, the most frequent pattern is ‘verb + noun’ pattern and the relative frequency of the other patterns is to some extent different among corpora

This study aims to examine the degree of lexical complexity in L2 college students’ academic writing of four different genres and to see whether the genre variation affects the lexical complexity in their writings. Using three dimensions of lexical complexity measures, this study investigates whether genre difference has an impact on the degree of lexical complexity, and how patterns and scales are different among L2 learners’ three writing proficiency levels. The study was based on data provided by 61 college students, and participants submitted four different genres of academic writings. Participants’ writings were scored by two raters based on the analytic scoring. The results revealed that Korean L2 writers generally tend to be affected by different genres when they write English essays. Additionally, more proficient writers used more various vocabulary in their different genres of writings. Based on the overall findings of the study, lexical complexity showed significant genre differences among L2 academic writings.

Ambiguous Syllabification in English : Foot Structure and the Schwa Syncope Problem

Stuart Davis, Dongmyung Lee

The syllabification of an intervocalic consonant in a trochaic sequence in American English (AE) is problematic. For example, speakers disagree on the syllabification of /t/ in metal. This study proposes that AE has blurred syllabification within the trochaic foot and that this is connected to the importance of foot structure in AE phonology. Phonetic work on AE indicates that foot-initial phonemes are enhanced or demarcated (e.g. by aspiration and other means) making clear the syllable boundary at the beginning of the foot. Blurred syllabification helps enhance foot-initial demarcation by making foot-internal syllable boundaries less distinct. Evidence for blurred syllabification comes from schwa syncope (Zwicky 1972; Hooper 1978; Kenstowicz 1994). Consider the words like (a) chocolate and opera, where schwa syncope (SS) is likely versus (b) pelican and felony, where it is unlikely. The oddity of English SS is that it is preferred in (a) when the resulting consonant cluster after SS has a syllabification that is uncertain (i.e. blurred), but is avoided in (b) when the syllabification between the two consonants would be very distinct. Under a new conception of English SS developed in this paper, SS is viewed as a problem of foot structure reduction: SS reduces a dactylic foot into a preferred trochaic foot. The pattern of SS can best be understood if AE actually prefers nondistinct (or blurred) syllabification within a trochaic foot. This functionally helps to enhance the foot-initial boundary.

This study aims to investigate the stylistic features of maritime fiction written by Louis Becke, one of the best maritime fiction writers in Australia, in terms of keywords extracted from a study corpus compiling his five maritime novels against a reference corpus composed of general literary novels selected from BNC Baby. Additionally, we compare the list of keywords extracted from the study corpus with that of Joseph Conrad’s maritime fiction corpus to ascertain the distinctive stylistic features of Louis Becke’s writings. The results show that Becke’s maritime fiction has comparatively smaller standardized type/token ratio, shorter mean word length, a broader variety of the maritime vocabulary, and more unique function words than that written by Joseph Conrad, a Polish-British author. Interestingly, some function words extracted as keywords represent Becke’s stylistic characteristics: a conjunction coordinator (and), the first person pronouns (I, we, and me), and modal auxiliaries (will and shall). As expected, it was also observed that there are numerous maritime-related content words such as captain, boat(s), mate, ship, brig, crew, deck, board, reef, ashore, etc. in the top 50 keywords.

A Note on Passives in Creoles

Soonhyuck Park

한국언어과학회 언어과학 제25권 1호 2018.02 pp.353-371

※ 기관로그인 시 무료 이용이 가능합니다.

The passive construction in creoles is one of the topics that have been much discussed to see how it can be systematically and uniformly accounted for, given that most creoles and spoken languages have not yet been properly codified by an appropriate body. As a creole does not have a standardized orthography and many elements of its writing system remain contested, Kristang is the one that this paper focuses on to try to provide a unified analysis within the recent syntactic framework. Kristang is known as having four variant forms of the passive which are assumed to be inherited from its substrate, Malay. The purpose of this paper is to determine why Kristang might have such a multiplicity of forms in the passives and to see if this multiplicity can be shown to be derived from a single base structure. This paper eventually attempts to provide both the structures of all four passives in Kristang and a preliminary understanding of the motivation behind the variation, but reaches a conclusion that at least one of these passive constructions in creoles could possibly be something other than a passive structure.
