Linguistic computations are designed to follow the requirement that all derivations be as minimal as possible. In performance, however, all derivations are not always equal in computational loads. This study investigates the processing patterns of two syntactic operations, scrambling and VP ellipsis, from a multi-disciplinary approach which is based on experimental psychology ad physiology. The psychological experiment of online response time in processing raises the paradox between minimal computation and easy processing, in that scrambling can not only trigger the syntactic complexity, but help reduce the reading time when combined with deletion. This study, based on further MR spectroscopical experiment of the relative ratio between GABA and glutaminate in pediatric and adolescent brain development, suggests that competence and performance are interchangeable in such a way that the same principle applies to both components and one gives the instructions to the other.

The purpose of this paper is to account for the syntactic distribution of English adverbs, the properties they have and the formal licensing conditions they obey. Specifically, it critically reviews some major analyses of the structural integration and licensing of English adverbs proposed within the theoretical framework of the Minimalist Program and discusses some of their potential problems. The Minimalist proposals assume that the semantic classes of adverbs, their canonical linear order and their scope properties are defined syntactically in relation to the clause structure which is conceived as a unique and universal hierarchy of functional projections with each projection having its own specific semantic interpretation. Adverbs integrate into clause structure as unique specifiers of designated functional projections and thus enter into transparent semantic relations with the head of the functional projection they occur in. As its background, this study also makes a brief survey of major issues in the syntax and semantics of English adverbs in generative grammar in general and of theoretical and empirical problems of the adjunction-based analyses proposed specifically in the GB/PPT theory.

This paper aims to construct a list of the grammatical collocation of Korean bound nouns based in Korean texts, Korean grammatical dictionaries and the frequency in modern usage of the Korean language. This list is classified the grammatical collocation of Korean bound nouns according to levels of the students study Korean as a foreign language and helps them to speak Korean well. The term ‘the grammatical collocations’ means a high frequency combination of lexical and grammatical parts. It is used as one unit in a sentence and has a grammatical function. It means strong morphological and syntactic combination. They are made up of ‘modifier form/noun suffix + bound noun + postpositional particle/verb’. The distinctive characteristic of them is that they possess a strong morphological and syntactic combination and also have semantic features.

Due to the fact that context is a complex notion, it often creates the problem of incommensurability among linguisㅅtic groups whose viewpoints on language are completely different from each other. With a view to curing such a problem, this paper sheds lights on a number of different notions of context, and makes an attempt to classify them from different perspectives on context. More concretely, the notions of context will be scrutinized that are framed respectively in Generative Grammar, Cognitive Linguistics, Text Linguistics and Corpus Linguistics. In so doing, a couple of different notions of context will be classified into North American Contextualism and British Contextualism. Under the rubric of this, the current paper provides a comprehensive description of different perspectives on context, in the belief that such a description will yield insights into a variety of notions of context

The purpose of this study is to examine how text augmentation in elementary English influences listening, writing and recognition of classroom English words and how these variables relate to and predict one another. For this purpose, two classes of third grade students were selected: one group of participants learned ten classroom English words using both verbal instruction and written text, while the other group received only verbal instruction with no text augmentation. Then the participants of both groups were tested for listening, writing and recognition immediately after receiving the lesson, and then once more after a two-week delay. The group instructed with text and spoken language had consistently higher rates than the group instructed with spoken language alone. As for the immediate test, the results suggest that the participants instructed with text and spoken language showed greater differences in listening, writing and recognition compared to those instructed with spoken language alone. Although there was no significant difference in the listening, the results showed significant differences in writing and recognition from the delayed test. Both groups showed a significant correlation between the abilities in the immediate and delayed tests. Listening and recognition ability appear to predict other abilities over fifty percent.

The paper suggests teamwork for translation for more integrated and holistic approach in translating. The focus of the curriculum of most translation and interpretation graduate schools in Korea has been on individual work rather on team approach. The market for translating and interpreting has been going through so rapid evolution and diversification, which requires adaptability from translators or interpreters. Translating or interpreting is not just about language fluency. The translator needs to be trained to be able to handle the translation at hand as an organism which has its function in the polysystem of the given society at the given time. Translation requires far more than the linguistic or transcoding abilities of an individual translator. The published books translated into Korean from English have been studied and found to be lacking most in preserving the linguistic register of the source text. The Korean translation market needs the strategic and holistic perspectives in dealing with the translation. The whole process of translating encompasses initiation, negotiation, and revision as well. The translator also needs to be a strategist. The process involved is too complex to be competently handled by an individual translator. Therefore, translating team needs to work together to make the translation the most appropriate for the purpose. The school curriculum also needs to motivate the students to have the holistic view whenever they are faced with the translating job.

The goal of this paper is to investigate Korean high school students' collocation knowledge of English adjective synonyms. Four pairs of synonymous adjectives were tested. The subjects are 100 high school students, who are divided into 2 different groups(high and low level students) according to their grades on the mid-term exam. The result was as follows. First, the average score of the whole high school students was 74.10%, and the high level students' score(78.88%) was higher than the low level students(69.31%). The order of average scores by synonymous adjectives was fast/quick(83.38%)> clean/clear(82%)> wide/broad (67.88%)> strong/powerful(63.13%). Second, there was a low correlation(r=.447) between their general English ability and collocational knowledge. Third, in some collocations(powerful argument, strong accent, quick temper), the low level group's score was higher than the high level group. The result of this study shows that Korean high students' collocation knowledge of these synonymous adjectives is considerably poor and unbalanced. We need to change individual word-based teaching to collocational chunk-based teaching to improve Korean EFL learners' communicative ability. Also, corpus is useful in teaching and learning collocations since corpus is full of a variety of useful collocational expressions frequently used in daily life.

This paper aims to explore the interaction of lexical aspect of English verbs and the grammatical aspect of the progressive and account for the stative progressive in a principled manner. Based on their lexical aspect of whether they have duration or natural endpoints, verbs are classified into dynamic and stative verbs. It is then shown that dynamic verbs, which include verbs of activity, achievement, and accomplishment, can combine with the progressive, while stative verbs cannot because of the conflict between their lexical aspect and the grammatical aspect of the progressive. On the observation that the stative progressive is commonly in use in everyday English, efforts are also made to advance the proposal that the stative verbs can be in the progressive form in the contexts where they show limited duration or imply a series of changes over time. At the same time, it is proposed that stative verbs are made compatible with the progressive aspect when used dynamically or employed to add more vividness, intensity, and emotional strength.

In this paper, we will investigate properties and various analyses of copy raising (CR) constructions in English, and suggest the parallel movement analysis. We will propose that CR subject is raised to [Spec, T] of the matrix clause from [Spec, T] of the embedded clause. Simultaneously, the edge-feature (EF) of C in the matrix clause forces CR-subject to be moved to [Spec, C] of the matrix clause from [Spec, T] of the embedded clause. Copy raising constructions are ambiguous between a thematic and a nonthematic reading for the subject. To capture the duality of CR subject, we suggest that the non-thematic use of CR subjects is possible in case that the copy in [Spec, T] of the matrix clause is pronounced at PF component among three copies of CR subject, based on the parallel movement analysis. In contrast, the thematic use of CR subjects is available in case that the copy in [Spec, C] of the matrix clause is pronounced at PF component among three copies of CR subject. Given these proposals, we will conclude that the parallel movement analysis can explain properties of CR subject in English

This paper explores how to convert hierarchical syntactic structure to linear word order. Rather than taking the more popular ideas such as the head parameter hypothesis by Chomsky (1981) or the strict mapping hypothesis by Kayne (1994), we take the mapping parameter approach proposed by Kural (2005) which attributes typologically different word orders to different algorithms of mapping hierarchical structure onto linear strings. In particular, we show that the concept of preorder, inorder and postorder tree traversals in computer science can be employed as mapping algorithms to turn a universal base structure to VSO, SVO and SOV word orders. Furthermore, the tree traversal algorithms account for in-situ properties of wh-expressions and VP-internal subjects in languages like Korean, in addition to doing away with multiple applications of leftward movements needed in Kayne's (1994) system. We also demonstrate how the tree traversal algorithms can be properly designed and computer-implemented to yield relevant word orders in typologically different languages

The aim of this paper is to analyze the scrambling constructions and to give them a unified explanation under the assumption that the scrambling is not a simple optional movement but an obligatory movement induced by the Edge-feature of a head. In this paper, I examine that such a syntactic derivation results from the syntactic agreement between this edge-feature of a head and the so-called 'D-effect' of a lexical category. Basically, I argue that only Edge-features in terms of Chomsky (2005, 2006) rather than Agree-features can induce the scrambling. I also suggest that the scrambled elements, whether they are derived from clause-internally or clause-externally, move into the outer spec of TP or vP positions which are defined as A'-positions in our suggested framework. I also assume that the inner spec of TP position is taken by the cannonical subjects. Then, the A- and A'-distinction becomes clear in that A-positions are induced by Agree-features and A'-positions are by Edge-features and that only Edge-features can trigger the scrambling that is defined as the syntactic derivation with A'-property as well as discourse-semantic effects
