교양 교육에서의 융합적 교육과정으로의 접근- 한양대 사례를 중심으로 -

This study is to present as an exemplary case an integrated curriculum approach to liberal arts education developed at Hanyang University. Changes in social environments and individual demands on university necessitate integrated approaches to existing liberal arts education. Integrated curriculum refers to fusing knowledge and values of more than two different disciples into one course and providing a systematic array of such fused courses. Such need for integrated curriculum corresponds to changing society and competitive efforts of integrated education among higher educational institutes to incubate global leaders as well as demands from faculty and students for reform on campus. Much advance is expected in academic learning through the integrated liberal arts education. Hanyang University curriculum remodelling for 2009-2012 has set into a direction toward consilience-oriented liberal arts education. The College of General Studies has played a leading role, working with Academic Affairs, Curriculum Committee, and participating professors from diverse areas to reform liberal arts curriculum and to execute the development of integrated liberal arts courses. This approach redefines the required abilities for Hanyang educated men as CULTURE and characterizes the traits of 2009-2012 liberal arts curriculum as CIRCLES. 12 integrated and multi-disciplinary courses have been developed in details including course description, syllabus, weekly teaching plan, and weekly instruction content, which are scheduled to be held in either Spring or Fall semester in 2009. Quality improvement of liberal arts education can not be achieved by mere the development of courses, but it demands understanding of problems at class and in the field and resolving efforts. Solutions are suggested in terms of the Hardware aspects such as classroom assignment according to the class size and information network infrastructure for on-line learning, the Software aspects such as research and course development of liberal arts education, the Humanware aspects such as change in the appreciation of liberal art education among faculty and students and a quality improvement program for teachers, and the Systemware aspects such as open development for new liberal art courses, the execution of analysis-evaluation-research, and the establishment of a regular research center. In conclusion, liberal arts education should not only administrate conventional general education, but try to find various ways for strengthening students' capacity. The development of integrated curriculums is a case of such trials to promote required changes in liberal arts education.

The course “Modern Society and Science & Technology” has been offered at the Kookmin University since the first semester of 2006, as one of the subjects for general education in order to educate scientifically and technologically literate individuals having scientific reasoning. We live in knowledge-driven societies where the emerging importance of writing has received much attention. The reason is that writing is important in producing, sharing, and utilizing knowledge and information in this IT era. Futhermore, writing allows expanding and deepening their scientific reasoning. But, the deemphasis of the training in writing under the current college entrance examination system forces the Korean college students, who are internet/video-generation, unfamiliar to articulating in writing. On the other hand, the conventional writing educations have focused on subjects of art, literature, humanity, culture, and social issues. In this study, new teaching method of scientific writing, using scientific movies and documentaries as supplementary teaching materials, for the general education of science & technology has been proposed. Unlike writings of art and literature or practical writings, scholarly writings comprise abstracts, descriptive articles, and analytic accounts. The course was designed for such writings on various scientific topics. Instead of writing one's impression on the film as typically practiced in writing courses, this course encourages the students to analyze the scientific concepts and scientific reasoning, inherent in the films, and to report the results. This undoubtedly offers an opportunity for training scientific reasoning (hypothesis-deductive, deductive, and inductive thinking) as well as preventing plagiarisms caused by internet copying and downloading materials, a widespread practice among college students.
The so called “free major” program, which appeared recently in many universities, is actually expected to replace the department of law, which is to be closed on occasion of establishment of law school, in the sense that it could attract the excellent students.Indifferent of this background, its contents should be arranged according to the following guidelines in order to make contributions to improve the higher education at the universities in Korea.1) The contents of curriculum should consist mainly of the basic problems and theories in the fields of basic liberal arts and sciences. This is to keep the universality of knowledge and the usefulness in broadest sense.2) They must be in balance and harmony to make a whole in diversity. This si to nurture comprehensive thought and overview on the whole.3) The curriculum must be organized to enable the students to find problems and approaches to a solution of them. A successful planning and management of the free major program would be a great contribution to the higher education at the universities in Korea, because this has been focused only on the special vocational education which must be overcome in the 21 century, the “era of information.”
This paper reviews the current conditions of general education at selected universities in the United States and examines the important implications for the changes in liberal education being considered in Korea's institutions of higher education. Of particular focus are the characteristics of the general education curriculum, community based learning programs, academic advising, independent research for undergraduate students, independent concentration, and roles of residential colleges at Brown, Harvard, and Yale.

Today the liberal arts education in Korean universities confronts with great crisis. Main reason for it is the cultural poverty of the principal paradigm of the high education in Korea. This is, in my view, related with cultural characteristics of Korean modernity which is what I have determined as a ‘confucian modernity’. But that is also the very reason why we must not give up the liberal arts education in the high education. There are many good reasons why this is the core of the university education even in today's situation. The liberal arts education endeavors to grow up ‘the man of liberty’, that is, citizens who are liberated from the tradition and convention, and who can think, judge, criticise and act ‘free’. Nevertheless, this liberal arts education cannot be performed sufficiently in the present university's institutional frame of Korea. Therefore, we need to search a new road for it. I think, the PPE-program which has been successfully developed and established in the Oxford university in U.K. can offer a good model for Korean universities

Recently, many university develop various programs in goal the efficient operation and the evaluation, for example, center for teaching and learning(CTL), course portfolio and teaching portfolio etc. The purpose of this study is to introduce a general concept and character of course portfolio and a example of a course portfolio about a group- discussion study.

The purpose of this study is to examine the current conditions of arts education curriculum for the undergraduate students at Seoul National University, and to provide suggestions for its improvement. The primary sources of the data for this study were from the on-line survey of the course evaluation of the 1st semester in 2008, the Focus Group Interview(FGI) data for the course evaluation of the 2nd semester in 2008, and the transcription data of the symposium on the development of the convergent arts curriculum. The students reported that there was a considerable shortage in the current arts curriculum, in terms of both quantity and quality. The FGI data indicated the great needs for the activity-based arts curriculum. Finally, this study suggests, as an alternative model of the curriculum, the integrated arts education tradition in Chosun dynasty(primarily in the 15-16th century in Korea) in which the confucian elites(called “Seonbi”/literati) were trained in various artistic genres ranging from poetry and caligraphy to Oriental paintings.

Although school system of the university and enrichment of liberal education is deeply interrelated, recent return to department system from school system could make people think that liberal education is going to be entrenched sooner or late. But there is no reliable reason to think so. In order that liberal education may be successful, we should always pursue renewal of combination between subjects of liberal education. The renewal should reflect the change of educational demand and educational significance. In order to draw such a renewal through procedural rationality, the official quarter of liberal education should search students' demand and file it regularly. It is thought that communication education as liberal education at the universities or colleges in korea would win high score at the demand survey, at least where professors or lecturers have been training students' debating-writing competency with enthusiasm. At last, a case is introduced as an example of such a training which is practised on the subject of logical thinking of inje university. The purpose of the subject is the training of logical thinking and the method is educational discussion based on established debating process by 2 teams, for and against, each has 3 persons. Subjects of discussion is selected humanistic and classical, three readings are prepared for every subject of the teaching materials, students must write the preparation paper through essential research, and professors or lecturers should check and upgrade their discussion competence beforehand. This method makes students exercise reading, writing, and speaking simultaneously, so can give significant synergy effect for bringing up their communication competency.

From the academic year of 2009, a good many Korean Universities introduced the Open major Division. Based on 10 years experience of teaching and advising in the University College at Yonsei University, we believe that developing and applying a suitable major exploration program should be the key factor for successful settlement of the Open major Division. Yonsei University's major exploration curriculum, program, and advising system were introduced as a guideline to the major exploration process. The freshman survey and the first-year experience assessment in Yonsei University revealed that the freshmen long for a high quality education, professional lecture sessions, advice on choosing majors and career developing, and so on. Universities introducing the Open major Division should establish the major exploration process to meet the students' expectation.
