This article reinterprets vertical artificial structures?utility poles, waterways, apartment complexes, Goliath cranes, and underground urban infrastructure?appearing in Korean fiction of the 2010s through the concept of ‘rewilded infrastructure’. Whereas previous studies have primarily examined these works in terms of disaster, apocalypse, and biopolitics, this study focuses on how infrastructure, constructed through modern rationality, escapes human control and is transformed into an ecological agent that establishes new relationships with nonhuman actors while revealing the vulnerability of modernity. The works analysed in this article are Hwang Jung-eun’s Raptors Upstream , Kim Ae-ran’s Goliath in the Water, and Pyun Hye-young’s City of Ash and Red . Raptors Upstream examines how an artificial waterway substitutes for nature, Goliath in the Water explores the rewilding of abandoned apartment complexes and a Goliath crane, and City of Ash and Red investigates ecological entanglements among humans, rats, chemical substances, and urban infrastructure. This article argues that Korean fiction of the 2010s figures infrastructure not merely as the backdrop for disaster but as an ecological agent that destabilises the boundaries between humans and nonhumans, nature and the artificial, and life and nonlife. At the same time, the three works capture the emergent human-nonhuman relationality beneath their images of ruin and collapse, thereby generating possibilities for ethical and political reflection on civilisation and the logic of development. It proposes ‘rewilded infrastructure’ as a productive ecocritical framework for analysing Korean literature in the Anthropocene.

This study examines Jeong Ji-a’s Father’s Liberation Diary from the perspective of memory politics, and explores the ways in which literature remembers and records historical subjects. While previous studies focus on post-memory, community and care, mourning, and the recovery of political subjectivity, the present work considers the process through which the father’s life is reconstructed at the funeral as a radical site of memory and to the new identity that the daughter, who serves as the narrator, forms in this process. In particular, this study focuses on the paradox that the “actual” death of a “Red,” historically assigned to the realm of death, becomes the very occasion that makes it possible for his life to be remembered in its fullness. How the testimonies and memories of those gathered at the funeral restore not merely the life of an individual but the totality of the relationships he formed throughout his life is further examined. This study also argues that the novel reconfigures bloodfamily relations, as exemplified by the relationship between father and daughter, thereby revealing a new way of imagining “the familial.” Rather than limiting Father’s Liberation Diary to a narrative that reaffirms human complexity and communal ethics or to one concerned with non-biological forms of family and care, the work is read as a narrative in which the daughter becomes her father’s unique comrade by inheriting the relationality towards others that he practiced throughout his life. Finally, the novel demonstrates how a community of memory is constituted at the funeral as a politics of death and suggests a new possibility for memory narratives, one that foregrounds the ethical practice demanded of those who become subjects of memory.

This article examines Song Gi-won’s poetic world through three interrelated discussions: the formation of the wandering subject grounded in his self-description as a jangdolbaengi (itinerant market peddler), the subject’s openness towards the other through the imagery of flowers, and the meditation on death and emptiness in Evening . Although Song is primarily remembered as a novelist in modern Korean literary history, poetry both initiated his literary career and became the form in which his later reflections on death were most concentrated. His poetry should therefore be understood as a central axis connecting the beginning and the end of his literary world. This article first argues that the poetic subject’s wandering is not merely a condition of deficiency or romanticised roaming, but a mode of existence through which the subject relates to the world marked by wounds, absence, and dispersal. It then shows how this wandering subject becomes open to the other. Flowers, rather than symbolising beauty detached from suffering, function as relational images through which sick and damaged beings reveal themselves alongside others. Finally, the article examines how wandering and openness develop into a poetics of death and emptiness in Evening. Here, death is not simply life’s end or resignation in old age, but a process to be learned, endured, and accepted while living. Song’s late style thus presents an ascetic mode of thought in which the subject empties itself while confronting bodily damage and disappearance, completing a poetic journey “from wandering to emptiness.”

Lim Solah’s fiction examines the structural contradictions of society that force the precariat into precarious labour conditions, and based on this basis, explores how to resolve these social contradictions. Additionally, regarding what contemporary fiction should address, her work rejects the novel writing subjected by norms. This study examines these two aspects, by drawing on Judith Butler’s theory concerning the relationship between norms, subjects, and others. It takes as its central text Lim Solah’s “Caring of Fruit Flies ” , while also attending to other works, and examines the characteristics and significance of precariat and novel writing in Lim Solah’s works. Chapter 2 focuses on the labour narrative to examine the precarious labour, life, and industrial accident as experienced by the precariat and figured as an other subjected by norms. In Chapter 3 examines the novel-writing narrative to analyse the process and significance of pursuit of a new novel desubjected by norms.

Pavane for a Dead Princess foregrounds a romantic love story between an ‘ugly woman’ and a man, while simultaneously drawing attention to capitalism, lookism, and the tragedy of marginalised individuals in Korean society. The book’s romance narrative criticises the hierarchical order of capitalist society, yet also demonstrates how emotional affect can participate in reproducing aspects of that same order. This study examines the conditions under which the novel’s emotional impact becomes possible and argues that its affective power constitutes a formal effect that embodies both aesthetic achievement and ideological problems. The emotional impact of the novel is meticulously constructed through a range of narrative devices: the restricted perspective of the unnamed narrator, the absence of any physical description of the ‘ugly woman’, the narrator’s family history, Yohan’s interpretive statements, the girl’s self-narration, typographical arrangements, and the incorporation of songs. Through these devices, an apparently implausible love story is transformed into an emotionally compelling narrative and encourages readers to accept the relationship as intelligible and persuasive. However, the very sophistication of this construction reveals that the emotional appeal of the romance is by no means self-evident. Although the novel presents love as a beautiful possibility, this cannot be realised entirely outside the power of appearance and capital. Rather, it becomes emotionally recognisable and worthy of affirmation only after passing through the wounds and deficiencies produced by that social order. The ‘Writer’s Cut’, which follows the happy ending, retrospectively reveals that the preceding emotional experience was itself a narrative construct and thereby destabilises the novel’s affective structure. In this respect, the multiple endings created through the ‘Writer’s Cut’ function as a self-reflexive form that exposes the ideological character of emotional affect, thus preventing Pavane for a Dead Princess from remaining merely a conventional sentimental romance. Ultimately, the novel’s emotional power does not arise naturally from the purity of love and is instead an ideological effect that is narratively organised and authorised within the social order of appearance and capital.

This study examines the textual characteristics of “Deer Lady” narratives recorded in Korean during the modern period through a documentary review of versions that narrative appear in newspapers, magazines, and published collections of legends, folktales and traditional fairy tales. These texts are classified by genre as legends, folktales, and traditional fairy tales. An examination of the transmission patterns of the “Deer Lady” narrative reveals that the Anju-line tradition, preserved in local gazetteers, exhibits a stronger historical and regional identity than the Pyongyang-line tradition, which incorporates elements derived from Buddhist-derived elements. Modern Korean versions further reinforce these characteristics by retaining Goguryeo as the historical and geographical setting and identifying Yeoldusamcheonbeol, a plain in the Anju region, as the principal legendary site, thereby sustaining the narrative’s transmission and popularity. Whereas premodern Anju-line “Deer Lady” narratives, which confined their legendary setting to Yeoldusamcheonbeol, modern versions expand this geography by incorporating additional legendary sites, including Goseong-ri, Yeolgwi-ri, Hapjanggang, Janggunseongji, Samcheonpo, and Saeori. This expansion further strengthens its historical and regional identity. The modern “Deer Lady” narratives also extended beyond legends into folktales and traditional fairy tales, affording authors greater creative freedom and fictional imagination. These findings suggest that the enduring transmission and genre expansion of the “Deer Lady” narrative were made possible by the reinforcement of its historical and regional identity alongside its enduring mythic qualities, which together account for the narrative's lasting emotional appeal and archetypal significance.
