This study examines the textual characteristics of “Deer Lady” narratives recorded in Korean during the modern period through a documentary review of versions that narrative appear in newspapers, magazines, and published collections of legends, folktales and traditional fairy tales. These texts are classified by genre as legends, folktales, and traditional fairy tales.
An examination of the transmission patterns of the “Deer Lady” narrative reveals that the Anju-line tradition, preserved in local gazetteers, exhibits a stronger historical and regional identity than the Pyongyang-line tradition, which incorporates elements derived from Buddhist-derived elements. Modern Korean versions further reinforce these characteristics by retaining Goguryeo as the historical and geographical setting and identifying Yeoldusamcheonbeol, a plain in the Anju region, as the principal legendary site, thereby sustaining the narrative’s transmission and popularity.
Whereas premodern Anju-line “Deer Lady” narratives, which confined their legendary setting to Yeoldusamcheonbeol, modern versions expand this geography by incorporating additional legendary sites, including Goseong-ri, Yeolgwi-ri, Hapjanggang, Janggunseongji, Samcheonpo, and Saeori. This expansion further strengthens its historical and regional identity.
The modern “Deer Lady” narratives also extended beyond legends into folktales and traditional fairy tales, affording authors greater creative freedom and fictional imagination. These findings suggest that the enduring transmission and genre expansion of the “Deer Lady” narrative were made possible by the reinforcement of its historical and regional identity alongside its enduring mythic qualities, which together account for the narrative's lasting emotional appeal and archetypal significance.
