A Study on the Selection of Literary Works for Multicultural Education. Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture. Vol.7-2. 23-46. This study examined what to be considered in order to select literature materials matching the direction of literacy required in multicultural society at the intersection of literary education and multicultural education. Literary education essentially shares the goals of multicultural education, which are tolerance and respect for diversity, and it has regarded it as a critical object to make individuals have reflective identity. And for a successful multicultural education, we need to select literature materials in consideration of the following: (1) select works that help the learners understand Korean culture in order to provide minorities with opportunities to learn Korean traditional culture; (2) teach literary works necessary to understand the culture of minorities’ original countries in order to help minorities establish their identity and to help majorities understand minorities; (3) select Korean writers’ literary works on cultural conflicts experienced by minorities in order to help majorities understand minorities; and (4) select literary works that deal with multicultural themes more directly. Using literary works selected by these principles, learners may abandon the attitude of emphasizing ‘difference’ and attain cultural integration based on mutual understanding and tolerance of cultural diversity. A Study of Images of Foreign Women in Minyeodrui Sooda(Chattering of The Beauties). Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture. Vol. 7-2. 47-70. The way of storytelling of talk shows and real variety shows is that give the facts, and create an impression. But until mow some views of Minyeodrui Sooda(Chattering of The Beauties) have been focusing more on sexuality. So this study started from doubt whether it is right. We feel the necessity of taking an objective view of the this problem and for this reason carry out a survey and focus group interview for foreigner. The results of this research are as in the following. This program didn't use chattering although it operates as a social skills. That’s because this program was concentrated toward sexuality by Koreans's distorted perceptions of sexuality. In addition, this program didn't change in spite of that it's about time this program has to move toward 'unity' from 'separation'. That’s because production crew are just busy making anything new to say, forgetting their purpose. Until now, we have ignored and devalued television, but television is necessary to settle multi-cultural Society in Korea why it has a powerful influence on the public. Therefore we need to meditate on meaning of <Minyeodrui Sooda>. (Kyunghee University)

A Historical Study on the Narratives of Mixed-Blood People. Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture. Vol. 7-2. 71-91. For the purpose of studying principle of selection and exclusion of mixed-blood people, this paper considered the narratives of neglected mixed-blood people from Gaehwagi to this day. The first is in the period of Japanese Occupancy. Mixed-blood males was acceptable in Korean by conditions that his father was Korean. Gender dichotomy was more important than pure-blood in the genealogy of nation. The second is after the liberation. Mixed-blood people were ruled out because their fathers were foreigners. The third is in this day. There are friendly attitudes toward mixed-blood in this day. Because their fathers were Koreans. Therefore friendly sights of mixed-blood in this day are out of Korean male line too. The principle of selection and exclusion of mixed-blood people is not the myth of pure-blood but Korean paternal line(Sogang University)

Language Policy in Indonesia: Relating to the Issue of Cia-Cia Tribe's Adoption of the Korean Alphabet as Its Writing System. Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture. Vol. 7-2. 171-193. Since August 2008, some school children in elementary schools in the Cia-Cia community began to use textbooks, which were transcribed in the Korean alphabet. Owing to this incident, the Bau-Bau City, where the Cia-Cia tribe lives, received the worldwide press attention. Yet, excessive competition among the foreign and domestic media companies on this issue has caused an unnecessary misunderstanding, particularly on the news regarding the authorization of the Korean alphabet as the official writing system for the Cia-Cia Tribe. The official writing system of Indonesia is Roman alphabet. The Cia-Cia language is one of some 700 Indonesian tribal languages, and is now on the verge of extinction. The Cia-Cia tribe is one of the small tribes in Indonesia, where about 240 millions are dwelling. As the Indonesian citizens, the Cia-Cia tribe has the rights and obligations to use Indonesia's official language and alphabet. Particularly Indonesia, the country of multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural diversities, has emphasized the language policy, which supports the national unity. This paper analyzes several concerns on the matter of Cia-Cia's utilization of the Korean alphabet for the past year. In this paper, the researcher tries to find the kernel of the debates on this issue and to discuss the constructive directions for the Cia-Cia Tribe's utilization of the Korean alphabet in the future.(Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)

(A) Study on Contents Selection for Korean Language-Culture Education, Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture. Vol. 7-2. 195-219. The purpose of this paper is to examine the goals and the learners' needs of Korean language-culture education and suggest thereby a new directions to select the contents in Korean language and culture education. The contents of Korean language-culture education is independent to the communicative situation despite close relations between Korean language and Korean culture. Because the learners' needs of Korean culture are different from Korean native speakers' awareness it is difficult to maintain communication. The cultural contents should be related to the communicative situation and skills to reach the learners' needs and to cope with Korean native speakers' awareness. This paper proposes three directions for selecting the cultural contents. (1) Selecting universe cultural contents makes the learner to compare with his(her) own culture and discuss about cultural difference. (2) The cultural contents should be selected connecting to the communicative skills. (3) Studying Korean popular culture makes the learner to develop critical and creative cultural literacy.
