The purpose of this study is to distinguish the textual strata of the woodblock editions of Yanggeum Sinbo and to examine the chronological relationships among the different editions. To accomplish this, the study first analyzes the stratification of carving across ten extant woodblock editions of Yanggeum Sinbo. It then investigates the sequence of textual changes and the order in which the editions were produced. An examination of three aspects, changes in structure, in calligraphy, and in content, reveals that after Yanggeum Sinbo was first block-printed in 1610, no intermediate or re-carved full editions were produced. Only the San-hyeong section of the Geomungo tablature underwent revisions after the initial edition, and this involved partial recarving and supplementary carving. Meanwhile, a preceding study, “The Existence of the Ancestral Edition of Yanggeum Sinbo and the Duration of Woodblock Storage,” concluded that an ancestral edition existed prior to the extant versions. This means that one additional stratum should be recognized before the ten surviving woodblock editions. Taken together with the findings of the present study, the stratification of the carvings and the chronological order of the editions can be organized into four layers. Through this stratification, the chronological order of the ten extant editions becomes clear. Among them, the earliest is the Academy of Korean Studies edition corresponding to Layer 2. Although only partially preserved, it predates the second and third stages of revision, making it the edition closest to the original and therefore of exceptional historical value.

This study aims to identify the conventional expressive system of character representation in Pansori by focusing on the inmulchire (character-description) passages across the five surviving Pansori repertoires. Specifically, it examines the correlation between the structural regularity of the saseol (narrative text) and its musical realization. In the naedeureum (introductory formula) of character-related passages, a formulaic narrative pattern based on a "[subject + predicate]" structure commonly appears. When the subsequent narrative of the naedeureum develops into an inmulchire type, the jangdan (rhythmic cycle) varies according to the dramatic situation of the character's appearance and the atmosphere of the scene; however, the akjo (modal system) tends to combine with specific character types and emotional situations derived from the narrative. Furthermore, a conventional musical practice combining akjo, jangdan, and melodic progression has been identified in certain specific characters. Meanwhile, the conventionality of the saseol in inmulchire passages is also confirmed by the fact that they share a standardized descriptive structure. This involves first presenting the character's physique and overall impression, and then expanding into descriptions of the face and head attire, clothing and ornaments, weapons and possessions, and actions. This conventionality is further evident in the shared textual units and musical expressions used for specific character types and narrative situations. Passages depicting shabby attire or the appearance of Buddhist monks share similar descriptive elements, such as clothing components, action descriptions, and onomatopoeic or mimetic expressions, while also sharing certain musical elements like melodic progressions and rhythmic patterns in their musical realization. Nevertheless, differences emerge in the jangdan, butimsae (rhythmic setting), detailed rhythms, and melodic progressions according to the narrative context and character traits of each repertoire. In conclusion, while the inmulchire passages of Pansori exhibit diverse variations according to the narrative context of individual works, they share a conventional system of saseol and musical expression for character representation.

This study aims to examine how the Gayageum and its music are represented in Korean novels that feature the instrument as a central motif. For this purpose, nine modern Korean novels published between 1990 and 2022 were selected and analyzed with a focus on the ways in which the Gayageum is portrayed in literary narratives. The analysis focused on two aspects: the images associated with the Gayageum itself and the representations of its sound (Eum) and melody (Ak). The images of the Gayageum were classified into three categories: material and form, body and hands, and animals and nature. The representations of sound and music were categorized into four types: emotion and inner world, society and culture, memory and history, and worldview and cosmology. The findings show that the Gayageum is portrayed not only as a musical instrument but also as an aesthetic object and a symbol of traditional Korean culture. It is represented through human bodily elements such as hands, the chest, and breath, as well as natural images including the wind and butterflies, emphasizing the close relationship between the performer and the instrument. In addition, the sound of the Gayageum is frequently depicted through images of natural movement and living beings. The representations of the Gayageum’s sound and music express human emotions such as sorrow, longing, and love, while also symbolizing cultural values and national identity. Furthermore, the Gayageum functions as a medium for remembering history and conveying loss, and is portrayed as a transcendent entity that embraces the world and the cosmos.

Ujo and Pyeongjo, used in Pansori, are musical modes contrasting with Gyemyeonjo; while Gyemyeonjo expresses a sad and mournful feeling, Ujo and Pyeongjo are relatively calm and restrained in their expression. Ujo and Pyeongjo are distinct musical modes that also share a similar feel, and have been easily switched between and mixed even within a single musical piece. Accordingly, Ujo and Pyeongjo are sometimes described as distinct musical modes, while at other times they are referred to simply as ‘Ujo’ or ‘Upyeongjo’ without distinction. For this reason, this paper examined the melodic movements of Pyeongjo and Ujo, focusing on musical pieces in Pansori that are representatively referred to as Ujo or Pyeongjo. As a result, Pyeongjo used the Sol-do structure along with the re-sol and do-fa structure, and Ujo used the La-re structure, but these structures of Pyeongjo and Ujo endlessly switched each other within a single piece to form a melody. In addition, a consistent flow was observed in the sections where modes switched. In the transition from Pyeongjo to Ujo, there was a tendency to mainly ascend from Sol to La or move while producing a high La note. When transitioning from Ujo to Pyeongjo, there was a frequent tendency to descend from la to sol, or descend from re to do and move to a do-centered melody, or descend an octave to re and move through a re-sol structure to a sol-do′ structure. The melodic progression trends primarily used in sections alternating between Ujo and Pyeongjo are not applied in all sections. The progression of the pansori melody appears as a much more complex flow. However, what is clear is that in Pansori, the melody progresses by constantly crossing back and forth between Pyeongjo and Ujo. Furthermore, in the melodic progression of Pansori, the crossing of modes can be grasped through the function and movement of a single note and the shifting of the melodic structure.

This study aims to examine the melodies of danga (短歌) and danjang (短章), which appeared temporarily in 18th-century old musical scores, and thereby clarify the relationship between sakdaeyeop, a principal repertory of gagok, and the later-formed nak repertory. To this end, the repertories recorded in sixteen old musical scores were reviewed, while the inclusion patterns and melodic relationships of danga and danjang were analyzed mainly through Seonghogeumbo, Heojugeumbo, and Eoeunbo, in which these pieces appear. The results show that Ujo Byeolsakdaeyeop Danjang in Seonghogeumbo was formed by combining a newly created first-section melody with existing sakdaeyeop melodies, and that it shares the same melody as Ujo Sakdaeyeop no.4 in Hangeumsinbo. In Heojugeumbo, Ujo Danjang and Gyemyeonjo Danjang appear as newly derived repertories influenced by the first, third, and Jungyeoeum melodies of Ujo Sakdaeyeop. Furthermore, Gyemyeonjo Danga in Eoeunbo shows melodic continuity with Gyemyeonjo Danjang in Heojugeumbo and also demonstrates a close relationship with Ujo Naksijo contained in the same score. Through this analysis, the study confirms that danga and danjang, derived from sakdaeyeop, functioned as transitional repertories that later influenced the formation of the nak repertory. Consequently, a genealogical relationship of sakdaeyeop → danga and danjang → nak → nong and pyeon may be established. This study is significant in that it clarifies the connection between principal and subsidiary gagok repertories through detailed melodic comparison.

Traditionally, Korean culture can be divided into two areas of west and east, called udo (“right hemisphere”) and jwado (“left hemisphere”) in accordance with the administrative division and cultural area. In Honam, pansori (epic vocal genre) is divided in the western style and the eastern style and nongak (farmers’ band music) in udo and jwado. In Yeongnam, the mask dance is divided in the udo of yaryu (“field play”) and jwado of ogwangdae (“five mask paly”), and the shaman ritual music in the left and right hemispheres. However, the nongak in Yeongnam has not been established the musical area and has been regarded as one musical area. In this paper, I have proposed the establishment of musical area of nongak in Yeongnam. The farmers’ band music in Yoengnak can be divided into three musical areas of udo (west), jwado (east), and southewestern coastal area. The division of udo and jwado follows the division of the traditional western and eastern administrative districts. The band music in Busan, Daegu, and Gimcheon, along with the train route from Busan to Seoul, have transmitted to these days. The band music in the southwestern coastal area, centering in Jinju, has been developed along with the traditional administrative district and the commercial center. In this area, the rhythm of gilgut (“road music”) is in a symmetric meter that proves it is rather later version compare to the rhythm in the udo area music. The music in the southwestern coastal area had been played by professional musicians who have performed a symmetric meter for the stage performance. They also wear military hats in order to exhibit elaborate body movements and have used the janggu (hourglass drum), not the large drum, in order to play delicate rhythms. In this context, the music of the udo area is rather older style than the music of the southwestern area.

This study examines the narrative and musical features, as well as the transmission aspects, of the Hwanghae-do versions of <Song of An Jung-geun>. It focuses on the rendition by Mun Chang-gyu, a Seodo region variant that has previously received little scholarly attention, and compares it with that of Jang Jae-cheon. Through a cross-examination of the recording location, period of activity, and region of transmission, it further considers whether the singer Mun Chang-gyu may be the same person as the master singer of the same name who carried on the lineage of the Hwanghae-do <Baebaeng-i Gut>. An analysis of the lyrical texts(辭說) and music in the two renditions shows that, although both treat the same historical event, marked differences emerge according to each singer’s narrative strategy, and that these textual differences correspond to meaningful contrasts throughout the music. This study compares the handling of Bakja(拍子) in the two versions and analyzes Mun Chang-gyu’s musical idioms, with particular attention to the strategic deployment of Honsobakja(混小拍子), pauses, and Sigimsae(traditional embellishments). The significance of this study lies in bringing to light the documentary value and musical characteristics of Mun Chang-gyu’s rendition as an under-examined variant of the Hwanghae-do <Song of An Jung-geun>. It further argues that, even within a single narrative folk song, the construction of the lyrical texts and the mode of musical realization may differ according to the singer’s interpretation and expressive strategy.
