In Life Studies, Lowell describes his distinctive vision of the relationship between the painful world and the suffering self. He uses the actual details of his private life and explores the tabooed realm of feelings toward the family. This concern with memory and time is reinforced by Freudian psychology, which also influences the comic strategy Lowell adopts for Life Studies. The comic character of the work deserves commentary as an effective way of seeing Life Studies. So the comic vein of Life Studies is wry, not full of happy feeling. It is rhetorically well supported, on a theory of the comedy that owes much to Freud under life's pressures, desperation, and pain. Freud believes that a certain kind of laughter is the final proof of adulthood. Laughter of adulthood is an assertion of superiority and at the same time a healthy release of otherwise destructive pressure. There is an exact agreement between this plot and the basic Freudian theme and variation involving the individual's struggle to become a mature adult in the setting of Lowell's family and society. Lowell seeks out a new style suitable for the theme of quest for his lost identity. Lowell finds his identity by overcoming psychological difficulties, and gains a new possibility of life.

This essay is aimed at figuring out effects of patriarchal culture of the contemporary American society on women’s lives as shown especially in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. A focus will be placed on oppressed and restricted lives of women who are supposed to lead their lives just as mothers in the male-centered society where men control women, and the lives of mothers are tamed by patriarchal values. Mary in Long Day’s Journey Into Night is criticized by her family members because she does not execute maternal roles desired by the patriarchal society and is forced to play just the roles of a patriarchal mother. Her husband James remembers his mother who sacrificed herself to raise her children while working for other families and expects his wife to be a woman with the same kind of motherhood. Mary’s two sons endlessly desire and expect her to take a mother's roles. Mary’s oppression stems from the definition of a woman as one whose gender role in the family is limited to taking care of and protecting children. Amanda in The Glass Menagerie also is bound to patriarchal values and tries to play a mother’s roles for her children’s future. Amanda should take responsibility for her family without a husband. Thinking that women should have economic power, most of all, she actively tries to help her daughter achieve professionalism and economic independence through education. Amanda, however, decides that her physically challenged daughter can not take various roles in the traditional male-centered society and forces her to be an ideal woman as desired by patriarchal society. O’Neill and Williams describe suppressed and sacrificed lives of women due to the social elements, capitalism and patriarchal culture of America, through the mothers appearing in their autobiographical plays. They also show lives and maternity of women who escape to fantasy and the past without adapting themselves to the reality of the patriarchal society dominated by men with money.

English punctuation has a long-standing tradition and is extensively used in writing: it serves as an effective tool to write down pauses and stresses of spoken language as well as to distinguish grammatical and logical structures of sentences and their subdivisions. As such, punctuation is accepted as a solid linguistic entity in English. Meanwhile, punctuation is relatively new and not fully incorporated into the Korean language system as the language has well-developed clause-ending devices and thus sentential boundaries are clarified due to its unique morphological features. This paper seeks to understand English punctuation to discuss the translation of English punctuation into Korean. More specifically, the translationese of punctuation in English-Korean translation is examined. To this end, this paper touches upon the functions of English punctuation and elaborates on its evolution from the 7th century when punctuation was first adopted by Anglo-Saxons. Based on a clear understanding of the concept and history of English punctuation, this paper deals with the translation of the dash, semicolon, and colon to clarify how these markers take on their functional roles, how they can be translated into Korean, and what should be noted to avoid unnatural source language traces or translationese during the process of translation.

As can be seen from expressions such as senkecencayng ‘election-war,' mwuyekcencayng ‘trade-war,' and hyepsangcencayng ‘negotiation-war,' there are many domains that are metaphorically linked to war. When we call an activity a “war,” we are suggesting that the participants in the activity need to battle an opponent to win. Other war-related expressions such as censwul ‘war strategy,' and cenlyak ‘war strategy,’ have been applied to these domains as well. One such expression that has appeared recently is chongalcangcen ‘bullet loading.’ A close examination of the applications of this metaphorical expression reveals what is considered a ‘bullet’ in each domain—the essential element that leads to victory in the metaphorical battle. Depending on the domain, the ‘bullet' element differs, showing that the same metaphor can create different frames.

The purpose of this study is to examine the influences of contract learning on high school students' self-directed English writing. The participants were 5 high school students of emerging level with rare experiences of English writing. They volunteered for contract learning and compiled a learning contract and daily learning planner. The particular research questions are “How does contract learning influence the students' self-directed learning?” and “What effects does the use of contract have on students' perception of English writing?” During the contract learning, participants had constant face-to-face interaction with their teacher-researcher. The teacher-researcher checked their learning process by means of interviews. Analyzing the data from their self-directed testing sheets, their daily planners, and the interviews, the teacher-researcher found that contract learning was an effective way to improve students' self-direction and that students showed a high level of satisfaction because contract learning made it possible for them to monitor and control their own writing.

The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a difference in learners’ academic achievement (test areas: short sentence listening, long paragraphs listening, vocabulary and grammar, and reading) between NEST classes and non-NEST classes of college test-based English courses. The pre- and post-TOEIC scores of 493 college students taught by 13 NESTs and 429 students taught by 5 non-NESTs were analysed according to learners’ English levels (above 800, in the 700s, in the 600s, in the 500s, in the 400s, below 300) and their fields (engineering, humanities, social sciences, commerce and economics, laws). The results of the analysis showed that vocabulary and grammar proficiency in high-level non-NESTs’ classes, reading ability in low-level NESTs’ classes, and short sentence listening ability in NSETs’ commerce and economics classes statistically improved. No differences in other areas were found. The overall results of the study imply that both NESTs and non-NESTs could be equally successful in test-based courses regardless of levels and majors although more positive effects were obtained in terms of high-level learners’ achievement in vocabulary and grammar areas taught by NESTs and low-level learners’ achievement in reading areas taught by non-NESTs. Some pedagogical and research implications are suggested.

This article discusses how James Thomson’s The Seasons reflects the idea of “the sublime,” in terms of its psychological effect of terror, engendered by the descriptions of nature with reference to the new concept of light. In The Seasons the sublime is portrayed in storms, earthquakes, terrifying wild beasts, and all the other awe-inspiring characteristics of the natural world. Because of either magnificence or horror, the presence of light invokes sublimity, while the privation, or absence of light, signifies terror. Thomson shows this idea through the “parching” sun and pain-giving light of the sun in the equatorial zone, describing how height and excess can create pain. Through the terror-evoking descriptions, Thomson, by presenting both the positive and negative aspects of nature, emphasizes the fact that the terrible aspects of nature help show the greatness of the Creator and the inscrutability of His ways. Thus, Thomson concludes The Seasons with a “Hymn,” in which he expresses the theme of the revelation of God which is emerges in the harmonious universe, and of the gory due to the Creator of such sublime nature.

Acclaimed New Zealand playwright Robert Lord’s final play, Joyful and Triumphant (1992) is set in a small New Zealand town, and offers a forty-year (1949-1989) cultural and social history of his country’s society through the vicissitudes of the extended Bishop family and neighbor Alice Warner. This article examines how Lord, through, the use of eight scenes comprising eight Christmas Days at the Bishop family’s home over four decades, demonstrates significant changes in New Zealand society regarding such contentious issues as race relations and sexuality. The play also demonstrates that political differences between New Zealanders can be overcome, as evidenced by the late-blooming friendship between the patriarch of the Bishop family, George, a working-class supporter of the left-leaning Labour Party, and the affluent, middle-class Alice, a fervent supporter of the conservative National Party. At the same time, the play demonstrates the ideological fluidity of New Zealand’s two main political parties in the 1970s and 1980s, and questions the point of blind adherence to either of them. In addition, the play examines the rituals and stresses of Christmas, demonstrating that gender roles during the festive holiday remain essentially unchanged from 1949 to 1989, while ruefully acknowledging that the growing degree of political correctness in New Zealand, as in the case of George’s well-meaning daughter, Rose, sometimes results in unwitting victims.

This paper claims that the appropriate framework to address Light Verb Constructions is the Generative Lexicon Theory which has both the semantic structure and syntactic structure for each lexical representation. This paper further claims that two types of Light Verb Constructions identified by Kearns (1988) need to be approached differently within Generative Lexicon Theory: True Light Verbs are processed by the Type-Coercion mechanism while Vague Action Verbs are processed by the Co-Composition mechanism. These two different generative mechanisms explain why only True Light Verbs reveal differences from their simple verb counterparts. Addressing the two types of Light Verb Constructions with two generative mechanisms, this paper also supports the view that Light Verb Constructions are semi-productive semantic phenomena, rather than pragmatic phenomena.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the difference in involvement load induced by different vocabulary learning tasks affects Korean EFL adult learner’ vocabulary short-term learning and long-term retention. This study also investigates how different tasks (Reading, Gap-filling, Unscrambling) with different involvement loads affect vocabulary learning of learners at high proficiency level. For this study, a total of 35 EFL adult learners participated, they were randomly assigned to one of three groups to complete an assigned task. To measure the effectiveness of different task-induced involvement, a pre-test was administered to check both the participants’ pre-knowledge regarding the 10 target words and to prove homogeneity of three groups. Then, two post-tests were implemented, one immediately after the treatment and one two weeks after to measure their short-term learning and long-term retention on the target words. For the adult learners, the difference of involvement load was a significant factor in short-term learning, whereas it was partially supported for long-term retention, because Task 2 was more influential than Task 3. Therefore, the present study suggests that a more effective task should be considered for adult learners, who have different amount of time to prepare tests or study English, in teaching environments.

The present study investigates the effects of controlled writing tasks on L2 college students' grammatical knowledge gains. Eighty-two participants with a low-intermediate English proficiency level were randomly assigned to an ordering task group, a grammatical transformation group, and a control group. In the study, a background questionnaire, pre- and post-grammar learning strategy questionnaires, and pre-, post-, and delayed grammar recognition tests were utilized. The findings of the study reveal that ordering tasks showed a significant effect on learners' short-term grammar gains while the two controlled writing conditions, ordering and grammatical transformation tasks, were more influential than the control group was on long-term memory. In addition, learners involved in ordering tasks indicated a positive attitude towards affective grammar learning strategies. This research raises several pedagogical implications and also offers suggestions on how language educators could implement the findings of this study into their L2 grammar instruction.
