The purpose of this paper is to analyse what political desire is embedded in the main characters' love in Dido Queen of Carthage. Especially it will be interesting to observe how the contemporary Elizabethan English politic context is connected with the love scenes of the play. This play does not simply present the conflict between love and duty, but the conflict between Aeneas's colonialism to rebuild Troy and Dido's desire to attract European hero. What is important is that the conflict between African and European culture represented by the love of Dido and Aeneas does not only justify the imperial desire but reveal the injustice of the imperial desire and the disaster it causes. It is raised as Aeneas's heroic aspects decline and Dido's heroism rises. This play seems to emphasize the importance of gods' will and the fortune of the country rather than individual desire. Aeneas follows Jupiter's order and leaves Dido to found Rome. It seems to designate that his duty is much greater than the love with a woman. This view makes it possible to insist that Dido's love is not noble but vain and foolish. Dido and her love become just a means for Aeneas to complete his noble duty. However, we can find another desire through the subversive elements in this play. It is the desire to challenge God, to suspect the monarch's authority, and to value the individual and the other. This desire is revealed in the sense that Dido obtains the typical Malovian heroism, and in the sense that the gods are portrayed comically and absurdly. Dido becomes the symbolic means to resist the European imperialism, representing exploited Africa.

Multiculturalism is one of the important agendas of our age. Canada is considered as the most successful multicultural society. Furthermore, the Canadian government has suggested Canadian Multiculturalism to be the heritage of tolerance. This paper in opposition to this ideology studies the dark side of Canadian history, racial oppression through Sky Lee’s Disappearing Moon Cafe. Her work shows the silenced and hidden parts in the official Canadian public history. Lee deals with the institutional racism in Disappearing Moon Cafe. It is related to the century-long racial discrimination against and segregation of the Chinese immigrants in Vancouver. She demonstrates that Canada has been a racist country whose racism is based on white chauvinism, their fear of ‘Yellow Peril’ and Eurasians. This paper especially focuses on diaspora, institutional racism, and cultural discrimination and oppression through a bone-searching expedition and the Janet Smith Bill in this work. Canadian Multiculturalism as proposed by the Canadian government has ignored the hidden voices in the history. To become the multicultural society that is harmonious, free and egalitarian, it needs the appropriate awareness and mutual recognition about the past is necessary. Ultimately, being and shaping an authentic pluralistic society means what we can hear the formerly silenced and unheard voices.

This study is to explore the aspects of contradiction observed in the relationship between human and nature, or in the human attitude toward nature. All the environmental problems caused by human beings are considered to stem from the contradictory ontological condition of the human species, that is, the discrepancy between the existential and the perceptual condition inherent in humanity itself. Meanwhile, the practical inconsistencies are shown in the emotional, moral, and literary responses of human beings toward nature. Man is an inconspicuous part of nature in biological terms, while he subsumes the whole world of nature and beyond in his perceptive realm. Man discerns himself, a perceptive center, from nature, considering nature as an external environment. But his body, though a purely natural existence, can never be considered external, but it is himself. Man can never exist as a self-sufficient being completely independent of the natural environment. Nevertheless, he cannot but make a demarcation between himself and nature, and between wildness and civilization in order to survive in the given environment as well as to understand the world and the self. Human beings cannot be completely assimilated into the order of nature as the other species do, but they are a peculiar and self-contradictory species that can survive and thrive only through the act of at once demarcation from, and affiliation with, nature.

Great Expectations can be interpreted from the viewpoint of the struggle between the male and the female. In the context of the Victorian culture, men were supposed to be gentlemen with education, riches and gentle manners. As the aspiration for the ascent of status was huge among the middle and lower class people. they tried to get the means for the ascent through money, education and manners. Women were not different from the cases of men. They were enforced to be the angles of home, pressing their desire to enjoy themselves. This article shows that Great Expectations is the process of the harmony of feminity and masculinity. In this novel, feminity is symbolized through the heroin, Estella who tried to control her dominator through feminine fret and sexuality which were not allowed to reveal in the Victorian society. Masculinity, also, reveals masculine power through the process of the development of Pip who symbolizes the middle or lower class people. To Pip, the masculine power means the physical power to overwhelm the other in quarrel in addition to the manners of gentleman. These two aspects are not harmonized in the story, and they are mixed through holding of two characters at the end of the story, which means Dickens implies that the struggle between has been solves in the imaginary world.

English novel since World War II has long been regarded as “stagnation” and “regression.” The novelists who produced their major works in this period have often been criticized in that they failed to succeed the “Great Tradition” of the Victorian age and lost the glamour of their modernist predecessors. These low accomplishments of English novel in the second half of the twentieth century are generally ascribed to the English personality which is against any change or experiments and their aesthetic taste which is congenial to the realistic novels. On the contrary, there came voices, mostly from the English scholars and critics, advocating that the lack of experiments would not inevitably mean the stagnation and regression. Others presented their ideas maintaining that English novels since the 1960s did not lack innovation and experimentation. In this debate over the international status of English novel, John Fowles draws a peculiar attention from those professionals who rated high the accomplishments of modern English novelists. John Fowles is an existential thinker in his morality or vision of life. As for his art, Fowles can be well discussed in terms of both a traditional realist and an experimental metafitionist. Though the novelist himself often reveals his antipathy toward experimental modern fiction, his novels undoubtedly involve certain facets of postmodern metafictional experimentation. Ever since his first novel The Collector appeared, the works of the critics on Fowles are mostly revolving around these two themes: “exsitentialism” and “metafiction.” Starting from the mid of the 1990s, there came a new trend in the study of Fowles's life and art. It is in general an effort to illuminate the real facet of John Fowles as a naturalist, focusing on his non-fiction writings since 1970. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the diverse and contradictory views of the critics regarding modern English novel and to examine Fowles's position in the literary history of the twentieth century. For this purpose, the main stream of Fowles scholarship for over 30 years along with the new trend in the mid 1990s will be discussed. Biological informations about nature-friendly life style of Fowles and bibliography research will be applied.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet might be one of the most popular plays of all time on the screen. Among these film adaptations based on Romeo and Juliet, the most important ones were George Cukor’s 1936 production of Romeo and Juliet, Franco Jeffirelli’s 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 MTV-inspired Romeo + Juliet. All of these movies faced the same challenge of translating English Renaissance play-script to a new medium and for a contemporary audience, and they became a success or a failure in their own ways. In 2013, the Italian director, Carlo Carlei, hoped to bring back this famous story of star-crossed lovers with a fresh look so that it could be more appealing and accessible to the current young generation who are fans of the Twilight Saga films. Carlei’s Romeo and Juliet was filmed in the actual locations of Verona and Mantua, and set at the time it was written, and still felt almost like a fast-paced action movie with many spectacles. But most importantly, unlike previous major film adaptations, it used the script by Julian Fellowes who not only modernized and simplified Shakespeare’s original language but also invented and reconstructed new lines, in order to ‘rewrite’ Shakespeare for a new generation. In addition, some changes were made with respect to portraying young characters and Friar Laurence. However, all in all, Carlei’s Romeo and Juliet cannot be considered to be successful in creating a genuinely new movie about young ‘forbidden’ love, out of the too well-known story of Shakespeare. We might have to wait for another new film adaptation in the future.

This paper aims to reveal what Jhumpa Lahiri considers to be the meaningful diasporic identity, focusing on The Namesake. In describing the narratives of Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli who are the typical postcolonial diasporic subjects produced by the 1965 Immigration Law, Lahiri puts an emphasis on how they re-create their ‘home' in the unfamiliar American society not only by maintaining their bond with their home country's traditional culture but by forming a Bengali diasporic community. The newly recreated ‘home' enables them to overcome their sense of loss, to keep their authentic identity and survive whole against the marginalization of American society. The narratives of Gogol and Moushumi show that the predicament of the second-generation diasporic subjects lies in their two-fold minority positions. They have difficulty keeping in touch with their Bengali culture due to their physical and mental distance from their home country. Moreover, they feel their position as ethnic minority prevents them from being completely integrated into the main stream of American society. Moushumi struggles to free herself from the stifling ethnic expectations of her parents and ethnic community by performing the role of ‘foreigner' in the third space of France. However, the authenticity of her seemingly free life is questioned. It is revealed that the author is more supportive of Gogol's formation of diasporic identity. Gogol who once struggled to resist his cultural roots and assimilate himself into the main society, finally ends up in fully recognizing the true meaning of his name ‘Gogol' and the importance of maintaining the bonding with his cultural roots.

This paper attempts to illuminate the ways in which the anxiety of the imperial subject in the Romantic period gets translated into gender anxiety in Robert Southey’s Thalaba the Destroyer. Critics who work on Romantic colonial discourse have emphasized that contemporary texts dealing with the unknown world are saturated with unexpected instability. As the newly discovered space is frequently gendered feminine in colonial discourse, this instability often goes hand in hand with masculine anxiety about the female in the unknown world. The narrative of Thalaba the Destroyer relies on the sympathy between its hero and readers, especially because Thalaba resembles the traditional protagonist in the medieval romance, whose fierce fights with the evil elements result ultimately in the possession of his desired woman. Yet, despite the apparent similarity, Southey deploys the generic conventions of the medieval romance only to frustrate the readerly expectation. The marriage between Thalaba and his beloved Oneiza leads to the abruptly introduced death of the bride. Along with Southey’s depiction of Oneiza as an active agent of both her own life and narrative progress, her unexpected demise points to the hero’s failure to establish a stable relationship with the heroine in the realm of the text. Instead, the failure of romance indicates the fact that the reunion between Thalaba and Oneiza is deferred beyond the domain of narrative. Moreover, Oneiza re-appears in the text in the form of a vampire, causing an abrupt change in the progress of narrative and an enormous distress in Thalaba’s psyche. The vampire woman, whose depiction highlights its difference from human beings, embodies the threat posed by the foreignness of the female in the unknown world. Also, the vampire disrupts the traditional male/female opposition, as its mouth simultaneously plays the function of the penetrating and the receptacle. In this sense, the corrective penetration performed by Moath, Oneiza’s father, appears to recover the order of patriarchy. Yet, Thalaba’s inability to take part in the murder of the vampire denotes his lack of control over his own married wife, revealing the limit of the patriarchal order established by the elimination of the vampire. Thalaba also encounters Maimuna, a sorceress disguised in the form of a beautiful damsel, and her slender golden thread arouses the hero’s desire. Yet, the thread ultimately ensnares Thalaba, conveying the uncomfortable message that materialistic desire may lead to the destruction of the imperial subject.

By this time, there have been many studies about effective grammar teaching, and a lot of methods have been presented based on the results. Nonetheless, along with former generations, current students still have trouble when studying English grammar due to the abstractions made in grammar terminology that the students find difficult to understand. This paper aims at finding the methods of grammar presentation which can make learners approach grammar without anxieties, which grammar terminology gives to learners, especially for learners who are in the beginning courses of studying English. To reduce uneasiness of grammar terminology, I have suggested the similarities between Korean and English through contrastive analysis and used the usage of a native language in step with grammar presentation. In addition, I applied two activities, Input Enhancement and Recast, for learner's consciousness raising. The results of this study showed that teaching gerund with the usage of a native language was more effective than teaching with grammatical terminology in a traditional method. In other words, the effects lead students to approach grammar without reluctance. This approach proved to be effective in understanding and learning grammar concepts, triggering the students’ interest at the same time. The research results suggest that this grammar teaching method could help learners approach grammar easily who previously felt grammar to be boring and difficult.

The purpose of this study was to examine English learning strategies of public official job-seekers and to investigate differences in learning strategies in terms of the participants’ gender and their English proficiency. This research was done with 177 public official job-seekers (male 84, female 93) who were divided into groups of higher level and lower level by recent practice test. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) was administrated to all subjects. For analyzing the data. descriptive statistics and t-test were employed. The findings of the study indicated that compensatory strategy appeared to be the most used strategy among public official job-seekers, followed by memory, metacognitive, social, affective and cognitive strategy in that order. It was also found that both male and female public official job-seekers showed the higher mean scores on compensation strategies and memory and metacognitive strategy, except affective strategy. There appeared to be a statistically significant correlation between English higher level and the use of compensation strategy. The results showed that public official job-seekers with higher English level tended to use compensation strategy more frequently.

This study examines two different types of teacher error feedback in Korean EFL student writing in order to find out the most effective feedback type to improve accuracy in new pieces of writing, rather than revisions. Forty intermediate EFL learners from two intact classes at a Korean university were randomly assigned to a written or a conference feedback group. Verb errors such as errors in verb tense, verb form, and subject-verb agreement were chosen to be targeted in this study since they occurred most frequently during the first essay task conducted in the first class. A total of four essays, including three essays the participants received teacher written or conference feedback on, from each participant (160 essays) were collected for one semester. A two-way repeated-measures ANOVA and an independent samples t-test were used to investigate time and types of corrective feedback affecting accuracy performance. The result shows that teacher error feedback helps the participants reduce verb errors in their new essays. Additionally, conference feedback is significantly more effective than written feedback.

This study suggests a way to stimulate awareness of word combinations through the use of Korean subtitles. For this, 3 participants watched the American TV drama Grimm. Each participant was required to collect 20 language forms from the Korean subtitles that interested them and to write the relevant language forms in English. Their data was analyzed into two categories according to (1) if they were word combinations or non word combinations; and (2) the type of word combination: collocation, routine, or language form subject to a grammar-based analysis. A and B collected 90.1% word combinations among the chosen language forms, and C collected about 79.3% word combinations in the first category. The results showed C had a high awareness of word combinations, B had a low awareness of word combinations in the second category, and A was somewhere in the middle. Though they revealed different levels of awareness of word combinations, Korean subtitles helped them develop a sense of collocated “big words” (Ellis, 1996, p. 111) distinct from that of individual words.

The purpose of this study is to examine the students' preference and failure tolerance applying the flipped learning to English class. To achieve this goal, the flipped class was designed considering educational prerequisites and analyses drawn from literature reviews and case studies. 10 students majoring in English participated in the research for 8 weeks. For the first 4 weeks, teacher-oriented class was performed. For the other 4 weeks, flipped learning was implemented. Before the research, academic failure tolerance scale was measured. After the 8th class, academic failure tolerance scale was investigated again. Furthermore, qualitative data were explored in order to have a better understanding of the students' preference and awareness of the flipped learning. The results of this study are that first, the mean score of failure tolerance showed a significant difference between before and after the flipped learning. Among the 3 subcategories, behavior scale and emotion scale have a significant difference. Secondly, 7 of the 10 students chose the flipped learning for the next semester, the other 3 students want to have a class mixed a teacher-oriented class with collaborative learning and want to have a teacher-oriented class instead of on-line lecture. The students stated that the good points of the flipped learning are voluntary involvement and interaction and bad points are burden on pre-study and free-riding of students who are not prepared for the class. For the further study, the flipped learning should be applied to other classes which students have low failure tolerance. Considering that failure tolerance scale has an effect on expecting better academic achievement, flipped learning can lead an improvement of academic achievement on subjects students have low failure tolerance. The results of this study implicate that applying flipped learning to a subject which students have low failure tolerance can raise failure tolerance changing negative experience to positive.

The purpose of this study is to review whether a reflective journal which high school students wrote based on the teacher's feedback has positive effects on the improvement of writing skills. Further, the researcher explored students' perception on the reflective journal. The findings were followed. First, students accepted above 90% of the teacher's feedback and modified their essays strictly observing the teacher's direction. Some students recorded the reasons on their refusal of teacher's feedback in the reflective journal. Second, as the sessions progressed, the mean value for writing scores increased, indicating that the journal-writing activity had a statistically positive effect on the changes in writing abilities for students. Third, reflective journal-writing appeared to have a positive effect not only on the writing skills of students but also on the affective attitudes of the students. In particular, students gained the interests and self-confidence in writing as a result of writing of the reflective journal.

A Study of Bodily Desire and Moral Struggle at the Fin de Siecle in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Picture of Dorian Gray

This essay conducts a study of the relation or interaction between body and mind in the nineteenth century novels Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Picture of Dorian Gray. The focus here is on the moral issues raised by the interaction between body and mind, in particular, between body and desire and on the evolutionary issues raised by the transformation and mutation of the body observed in the novels. It seems that Charles Darwin's evolution theory changed not only the ontological status of the people, but also writers' concept of morality. A sense of morality had been deeply rooted in the unconsciousness of the Victorian people for a long time, but the theory began to pull down the solid wall of the moral consciousness. Gray's and Jekyll's attitudes toward life have degenerated slowly but surely. In a sense, the driving force of evolution comes from each individual's desire to survive. The desire is so influential to humans' and nonhumans' lives that it works as a fundamental power sustaining them in social, cultural, and natural environments. Each individual's desire interacts with his or her body in a certain way, which in return responds quickly to the desire. Besides the generally accepted notion that humans are faithful to the instinct and desire, the other law of nature that exercises influence over them is Darwininan evolution to survive, reproduce, and thrive, regardless of morality, in any social and cultural environment. As examined in this essay, nevertheless, it is well revealed in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Picture of Dorian Gray that Jekyll and Gray seem to live on, simultaneously suffering from, and struggling against, the immoral desires and laws.

Speculative Poetics in Cathy Park Hong’s Engine Empire

This essay considers Korean American poet Cathy Park Hong’s Engine Empire as a post-racial text in a questionably post-racial America and how that post- racialism might transgress some assumptions behind the reception of Korean American texts in Korea. Building from Ramón Saldívar’s theorization of a “speculative realism” that shows a “postrace aesthetic,” the essay focuses on the first and third sections of Hong’s collection. In “Ballad of Our Jim,” the first section, Hong speculates a 19th-century American landscape that stretches from Kansas to California. In “The World Cloud,” the third section, she imagines a future California landscape and an internalized cyber-scape. Both sections show that ethnicity, which seemed to have lost visibility in illusions of a post-racial American society, remains integral to seeing and understanding the coming majority-minority American make-up. Korean and American reading contexts become interdependent in Hong’s “postrace” speculations that point toward a future that may be constantly re-imagined through various minority perspectives.

This paper explores the transitivity bootstrapping hypothesis as a guide for determining telicity in English with Korean speakers. It hypothesizes that telic interpretations are linked to transitive frames and atelic ones to intransitive frames. The predicted pattern of acquisition is that the Korean participants would make errors with atelic transitives and telic intransitives since they are not supported by the hypothesis. The results show that they made the relevant distinction between telic and atelic items for three out of the four transitivity-telicity pairs, failing to do so for telic intransitives. These mistakes with telic intransitives are precisely the pattern predicted by the hypothesis. It confirms that the syntactic bootstrapping hypothesis is part of the acquisition toolkit exploited by L2 learners. As for the puzzle of why telic intransitives, but not atelic transitives, were particularly vulnerable to transitivity bias, it is argued to be best explained by the Surface Generalization Hypothesis and prototypicality of telic transitive frames for telicity.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the 3rd Grade primary school English textbooks used in Korea and China in order to find out the similarities and differences in the two textbooks and the strengths and weaknesses of each textbook. Two textbooks, one from each country, were selected as they are the most widely used ones in Jangsu Province in China and Gwangju in Korea. Two dimensions of the textbooks were analyzed, the form and the content. Here, the form includes structure and module design. The content includes unit titles, topics, language functions, language, the number of new words, activities, cultural content and the characters depicted in the textbooks. The results show that both the Chinese English textbook (CET) and the Korean English textbook (KET) have module components focusing on listening, speaking, and reading. The CET has more number of units but the KET has more diverse module components, teaching and learning activities and materials. The KET has a component to introduce different cultures but the CET does not have it. Also, the KET has more colors, photographs, and illustrations than the CET. The two textbooks have some common topics but several differences in the content of the textbooks, strengths and weaknesses. Based on the results of this study, suggestions were made for further practice and research on textbook development and evaluation.

The present study aimed to investigate the readability of reading passages in elementary school textbooks with focus on lexical, syntactic, and cohesion features. Toward this end, the relevant features of reading passages in the five English textbooks currently in use in elementary schools were analyzed. Comparisons of the textbooks for different grades were also made in terms of these features. In lexical features, significant differences were observed between grades in a way that readability decreases as grades advance. As for syntactic features, the textbooks were found to have areas for improvement, especially in noun phrase density. At the cohesion level, little consistency in progression in terms of cohesion features was observed between the textbooks for each grade. These findings suggest a need to give a more systematic attention to cohesive features in the process of developing and evaluating textbooks for different grades.

The analysis on the conversations was focused on how non-native English speakers and native English speakers can communicate with each other and applied to the English classrooms. This study has been on mainly conversation analysis, context, speech act and maxims of conversation, coherence and cohesion, models of interaction, negotiation of meaning, and schema theory. Through this analysis, this study gives teachers some implications to their English classrooms. First, teachers need to teach as a discourse level by using authentic materials. Second, teachers should employ pre-activities in order to utilize the contexts or activate schema. Third, teachers should try to encourage interactions between a teacher and students or among students. Lastly, teachers need to teach cohesion and coherence during the class.
