After a visit to Japan argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges composed five poems with a Japanese theme, all of them published as a group at the end of the book named La cifra (The Cypher). These five poems are: "El go", "Shinto", "El forastero" ("The Stranger"), "Diecisiete haiku" ("Seventeen Haiku") and "Nihon", this last, with the title in Japanese. Borges is especially well known internationally for his short stories, but throughout his career he wrote poetry extensively. This paper main theme is the vision of Japan that Borges describes in these poems and their relation to the rest of Borges’ production.
