Film translation, or subtitling, is different in many respects from other more established forms of translation. First, it is from various signs such as images, sounds and texts to a single type of sign: texts. Second, it is subject to time and space limits on a sentence and scene basis and still it must render a readable and understandable text for its prospective audience. Third and finally, film translation is about our daily spoken language. This paper aims to study the relations between reduction in film translation and changes in message. Film translators are under a constant pressure to reduce their translation for enhancing readability for their audience. But reduction usually comes with a price: change in message. This paper focuses on three kinds of message change: the loss of information, change in types, and the loss of humor. First, the researcher tries to find out how often reduction happens in film translation by looking at sample texts from five Hollywood movies released within the last five years. And then word counts and sentence counts are compared between ST and TT to get reduction ratios. And finally the researcher looks at what kinds of message change happen when TTs are reduced.

Metaphor is a word or phrase that means one thing and is used for referring to another thing in order to emphasize their similar qualities. Metaphor operates concept-to-concept, provides structures for our conceptual system and affects the ways in which we think about things. Literary metaphors defamiliarize language, but we also use metaphors in everyday speech. Especially, many words expressing metaphor are often derived from expressions referring to the physical actions or entities in terms of an experiential basis. The aim of this paper is to examine translation problems in translating poetry texts by focusing on aspects which appear in translation process. This paper has shown that the Korean poetic phrases related to love can be easily translated into corresponding conceptual metaphors in English which is linguistically and culturally very remote, even though various strategies have been used to be more appropriate and relevant translation.

The present paper examines the concept of interdisciplinarity in translation studies. Firstly, this study reviews previous discussions related to the topic, especially the notion of ‘integrated approach’, proposed and developed by Snell-Hornby. During this process, the characteristics as well as the limitations of this concept are identified. Secondly, this article focuses on the concrete results of interdisciplinary cooperation in the translation studies in 90s, explained by Snell-Hornby. Thirdly, by making some analysis about obstacles to research of interdiscplinary translation studies in Korea, it provides some suggestions for the interdisciplinary translation studies.

In translation for publishing translators' product have to go through revision process by editors or free-lance revisors. This study interviewed two free-lance revisors to grasp overall situation of revision in translation for publishing. Results are as follows: free-lance revisors get their revision work, based on work experiences in publishing companies in past; general revision guidelines are not established between revisors, translators and editors, which complicate their communication and cooperation; free-lance revisors are underpaid and underprivileged, which has become obstacle to guarantee reliable revision quality. This study can contribute to deepening the understanding of translation for publishing, finding out who are free-lance revisors and how they work.

This paper examines a genre of text, advertisement, in an attempt to define the role of translation and translator in this very unique type of international business communication. The primary purpose of an advertisement, both the original as well as its translation, lies in partly to provide information but mostly to appeal to the target customers by appealing to their needs and emotion. In consideration of such, the translator, as one of the most important factors in translating an advertisement text, must recognize the sociocultural differences between the SL and TL and mediate the communication in order to bring out the maximum "intended" effect in the TL advertisement. Such roles require the translator to be fully aware of the limitations imposed in the translation process by the linguistic format and function of the SL, as well as to be sensitive to any extra-linguistic factors such as cultural differences that could have significant impact on marketing. The most ideal case would be for the person requesting the translation to communicate to the translator as specifically as possible the goals of the advertisement at the beginning of a translation assignment. On the part of the translator, he/she must be familiar with both the SL and TL cultures not to mention be able to anticipate and prepare for potential hindrances that may pose as barriers to the delivery of meaning. In other words, the translator must be aware of what and how one word which may have same denotation can convey quite different connotation in different cultures. In the paper, an analysis is made of an advertisement, Hyundai Oilbank's ad “the Prince of Arab” episode, and its Arabic translation. The analysis is based on a written interview conducted with the producer of the advertisement. In the advertisement, traditional Arabic attire and music were used for visual effect. In the translated version, both standard Arabic and colloquial Arabic were used. This paper will look into what impact such strategy of translation has brought on the translated version as a whole.

This paper examines the significance of developing translation tool using skills in an electronic age. Over the years, there has been extensive discussion into the nature of translation competence. However, the focus has been placed mainly on linguistic and cultural aspects of translation. Becoming a professional translator in a fast-changing high-tech environment entails the capability to produce texts using various tools. Many softwares are also great contributors to the development of translation studies by facilitating the analysis of translation phenomena. Accordingly, translator's competence in capitalizing on advanced technology ought to be recognized as an essential part of becoming a competent translator.

According to ʔilhām ʔabū ɣazālah and ʕalī xalīl ħamad, Dickins and Hervey and Higgins, and other scholars, Arabic language prefers to recur in terms of linguistic aspect and rhetoric purpose. The use of recurrence in Arabic language is viewed to rearrange author’s ideas through linguistic variation and at performative function of cohesive text-building. This paper examines examples having a cohesive property in the process of Korean-Arabic translation so as to find out any effective translation strategies that particularly highlights the charms of Arabic language. Recurrence is used as a common cohesive property in Arabic texts. And the same type of a word's repetition, root repetition, and circumstantial accusative sentence are used as common patterns of repetitive device in Arabic texts as well. The role of translater as a mediator is to incorporate as much into Arabic text recurrence as a cohesive tool as well as parallelism which is largely prefered to be read by Arab readers.
The use of segmentation strategy in sight translation- A pilot study -

This paper looks into student performance in the use of the segmentation strategy while doing sight translation. The paper finds that while students are using the segmentation strategy in their performances, as indicated by a simple comparison of the number of sentences in the original text with the target text transcription, there is room for improvement in a more accurate use of the falling and rising intonation to indicate that there is indeed a segmentation that took place in the target text. Also, the students should be encouraged to develop a larger pool of discourse markers that can be used in making the segmented parts to be logically connected while fully conveying the message of the original text. The experiment result of this study also finds the need for a more detailed definition of the terms used in the analysis, such as ‘sentence’: a term well-defined and accepted in the written text, but that needs to be redefined in the audio input of the SI data.

Translation Studies (TS) are interdisciplinary by nature, and because of this characteristic, TS scholars tend to adopt and employ different terms in describing and accounting for the same concepts and phenomena. The lexical choices they make in so doing reflect the intellectual training they have received and the diverse disciplines in which they were originally schooled. The immediate consequence is that speaking the same language and communicating based upon an agreed-upon set of terms remains elusive within the discipline of TS. The present paper attempts to rekindle the dormant discussion on the need for standardization in the use of terms in TS. After reviewing 95 academic articles published in the past two years in Korea, an enumeration of specific cases of the use of competing Korean terms in describing a phenomenon in question will be presented. Examples are classified into two categories: one representing binary error cases, which involve obvious errors, and one that delimits the range of alternatives in the use of terms. Following this is a section entitled “Issues to be resolved in order to facilitate the establishment of standardized terms”. The respective merits and demerits of competing terms are weighed in an effort to contribute constructively to building a consensus on the use of specific terms. The list of terms includes 'the translator, ‘role definition of the translator, assessment/evaluation of translation quality’, among many others.

The problems research deals with problems unique to dubbed translations of screenplays. Solutions in conventional translation have limited relevance for dubbed translation because of its unique mode of delivery marked most notably by the requirement of synchronism between sound and text. This often forces the translator to settle for options which may not be the best under other circumstances. The success of dubbed translation also hinges critically on the translator’s ability to find equivalents that, on top of being semantically relevant to the ST, can arouse the intended emotional responses from the audience.
