There are many differences in the broadcasting interpreting style between Japan and UK. For example, broadcasting interpreting at the BBC Japanese Unit emphasizes the quality of Japanese, while accuracy was the top priority at NHK. However, both broadcasting organizations require interpreters to edit the information. Although all interpreting includes editing the information in some way or another, it is essential for the broadcasting interpreters to actively edit and organize the information. Based on his own experience, the author describes the interpreting style, policy and quality control system of the above two organizations. He also compares the difference between BBC and NHK’s employment style and analyzes the pros and cons of full time staff and freelancer. The definition of the term ‘broadcasting interpreter’ and its history is also explained.

Ideally, Korean-Chinese translation is to be done by translators who can use both Korean and Chinese as their mother tongue. In reality, however, most translators speak Korean as their native language and they received special training of translation. Thus it is an approved essential step to get proof reading by native Chinese speakers. Despite the step, it is virtually impossible to avoid mistranslation. Therefore, the present study purposed to analyze errors in Korean-Chinese translation and their types to give help to Korean-Chinese translators. The subject of this study was the Chinese home page of Seoul City. The researcher collected errors in the site from February to March in 2003, and examined errors by classifying them into vocabulary errors, syntactic errors, problems found from comparing the source language to the target language and cautions in writing translated texts.

This paper examines the effect of attitude toward reading and leisure reading in Korean and in English on translation competence among from English to Korean. Korean undergraduate students taking translation courses participated in the study. Results indicate that attitude toward had a positive effect on translation competence mediated by leisure reading in Korean and in English. Leisure reading in Korean had a positive effect on translation competence mediated by reading in English. Implications for practice and teaching translation are discussed.

It is often said that the Japanese language lacks logic, compared with its Western counterparts. Namely, the Japanese focus on emotional aspects of a speech or text, rather than on logic or precision. In fact, the Japanese often speak or write in a vague way based on his or her feelings or experience, instead of presenting numbers or data. However, a good speech need not always be logical and precise. What is important is the message, and therefore it is not desirable ― in any language ― to stick to logic at the detriment of the content. Nevertheless, in a multi-language environment where relay is practiced, interpreters of other languages often say that the into- Korean interpretation of their Korean-Japanese colleagues is "unique." Here, uniqueness means vagueness, lack of logic and understatements, all of which stand in the way of correct understanding. A language plays the crucial role in forming thoughts of a people using it, while serving at the same time as the vehicle of carrying them. Therefore, looking into the Japanese way of thinking reflected in their language can provide clues for unravelling the apparent vagueness or contradiction in a Japanese speech or text. In quest for these clues, this paper deals with the honorifics where the Japanese mentality are very well represented. At the same time, it discusses the results of a survey on what are the stumbling blocks the Korean-Japanese interpreters run into and how they overcome them.

Once an interpreter begins to interpret source languages into Korean, the interpreter becomes the speaker for the Korean audience. Therefore, the ability for the interpreter to render a speech in Korean is as important as the ability to understand the speaker's message. However, graduate schools and training institutions of interpretation in Korea do not provide students with a structured Korean speech training. Rather, they tend to focus on training students with their foreign language ability. In this study, it surveys claims of scholars and instructors who teach interpretation that the ability to give a speech in A language can be the key to successful interpretation in the interpretation market. It emphasizes that Korean interpreters are expected to be equipped with perfect Korean language ability and speech delivery skills. By analyzing common features between speech and interpretation, this paper also shows that the interpreter becomes the speaker when an interpreter begins to deliver the message before audience. Finally, it is suggested that more structured curriculum for Korean speech training must be developed and offered in teaching interpretation.

This paper aims to find out how Theme/Rheme concepts can be applied to translation studies. At first, Theme/Rheme concepts and various approaches with them will be introduced. Theme will be defined as the known, given, or retrievable information based on text, readers' world knowledge, while Rheme is unknown information, which is irretrievable from context. Previous studies on Theme/Rheme can be divided by their main concerns; word order in separate sentences, connections between sentences and overall text structures. Then will be reviewed works from translation studies which adopted Theme/Rheme concepts. For translation studies it is necessary to go beyond separate sentence perspective. Lastly, GSIT students' translation will be analyzed with Theme/Rheme concepts.

Revision of translated texts is part of the overall translation production process and thus is an important concept in understanding the nature of translation. However, revision has so far been treated only as a secondary task in the translation process and has not received proper attention in the field of translation studies. The fact that there is no clear definition of the concept of revision and that a handful of different terms are used in its place proves such lack of proper attention and research.What is revision? How has the discussion of the concept of revision been going on? The first part of this study will track the discussions to date on the concept of revision along with key debates on the subject. Revision will be seen in a larger picture of ‘Translation Assessment Procedures’. Definitions of other similar terms will also be reviewed in the first part of the study.After comparing the different definitions of various scholars the second part of the study seeks to suggest ways to clear the confusion in the discussion of revision. Ultimately, the study aims to clearly define and understand revision and other similar translation assessment activities.

Metaphor is not merely a device of the poetic imagination and rhetorical flourish, but is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action. In various expressions of emotion we can find, that there lies common conceptual structure. This paper discusses problem of emotion metaphor in translating literary texts from Russian into Korean by focusing on factors which can influence on translation process. It begins with brief introduction of theory of conceptual metaphor by Lakoff & Johnson(1980) and theory of emotion metaphor by Köveches(2000). Analysis of translated cases of emotion metaphor indicates that stylistic features of an author and relations among components of a sentence should be accounted for even if the conceptual structures of emotion metaphor appear to be same in two languages.

Translation is an intercultural communication activity. To make ‘functional’ the communication between the source-text producer and the target-text audience, who belong to different cultures, translators have to transplant source-text culture into the target-text territory. How to translate culture? The response seems to vary according to the skopos of each translator. This paper, comparing English translation and Korean translation of le tour de Gaule d’Astérix, fifth volume of the famous French Astérix series, examines which skopos the translators adopt to translate cultural differences. This paper particularly focuses on the specificity of the cartoon as a double medium text in which the message reaches the receiver through both the image and the text, and describes how this genre-related specificity constitutes a supplementary difficulty in translating culture. This paper shows the English translators tend to adopt adaptation as skopos while the Korean translators tend to adopt explanation as skopos using many translator's notes. As a conclusion, the two translation strategies are related to different skopos of translators who, with different conceptions of the translation and the target audience, make the best choices in the given conditions as an intercultural communication expert.

Much research on the quality assessment of simultaneous interpretation have been carried out by interpreters in the past and nowadays increasingly by end-users. This paper demonstrates how professional interpreters asses the quality of the pivot in relay interpretation settings in Korea where relay interpretation is commonly used in multilingual conferences since most interpreters usually have only two working languages. This paper also contains a survey that explores the quality assessment criteria set by professional interpreters suggesting a difference in criteria between simultaneous interpretation and relay interpretation.
