The previous studies explain that revision should be performed bilingually by a person who has the same qualifications with the translator: revisers should be bilingual and have translation experience. However, it is hard to find a reviser who satisfies the requirements for translations from Korean into foreign languages. Therefore, monolingual revision by a native speaker, who cannot read the Korean source text, has become an established process in translation production in Korea. Therefore, this study analyzed how revisers’ profile influenced revision quality. It found native speakers who have both Korean reading capability and translation experience generally recorded high quality scores for their revisions. However, quality scores varied among native speakers without translation experience, regardless of their SL capability. Given the difficulty in finding qualified bilingual revisers for translations from Korean into foreign languages, LSPs need to implement measures designed to improve the quality of monolingual revision, such as regular verification of revision quality, and training and instructions for revisers on effective strategies.

Sharon Choi became an instant celebrity in both Korea and beyond as the videos of her eloquent English interpreting for the Academy-winning Parasite’s director Bong Joon-Ho, went viral on social media. The study aims to explore the possibility and implication of using Sharon Choi’s interpreting case for education purpose, although she is a non-professional or a non-certified interpreter. Using the videos of Sharon Choi’s interpreting on social media, 53 graduate students majoring in interpretation and translation in Korea participated in survey, which was conducted to look into how students evaluated Sharon Choi’s interpreting at the beginning of semesters of 2020. The survey results show that Sharon Choi helped students to better understand the role of interpreter and interpreter competence for outstanding consecutive interpreting service, despite her limitation as a non-professional interpreter. The survey has also provided unique opportunity for discussion on the conditions for successful interpreting as well as competitive edge students should have as they launch and continue their training at an accredited graduate school to become professional interpreters and translators.

Since diplomatic relations between Korea and China normalized in 1992, there has been an overwhelming increase in the number of interpreters and translators that connect speakers of the two countries. However, during the Korean-Chinese consecutive interpretation process, it is common to encounter literal expressions that reproduce the syntactic structure of Korean as it is or awkward expressions that impede the comprehension of the listener. However, there are not many studies that focus on this issue. This study recognized this problem and analyzed errors based on 560 texts from 40 graduates of the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation in order to provide practical data to the Korean-Chinese consecutive interpretation education field. In order to examine the types of rhetorical errors that appear in the results of learners of Korean-Chinese consecutive interpretation, errors were classified into word rhetoric, phrase rhetoric, sentence rhetoric, and text rhetoric according to the rhetoric structure. The appropriateness of active phonology was considered as well. This paper aims to provide practical and educational material that can be used in the field of consecutive interpretation education from Korean to Chinese.

This study explores how North Korea accepts American literature into its literary system by comparing two different translations of Dreiser’s An American Tragedy (1925) between South and North Korea. Unlike South Korea, North Korea regards the USA as its enemy, uses literature as promotional documents to maintain its system, applies its Juche ideology to select a text to be translated. As this novel describes Christianity and capitalism in the USA, the North Korean authority regarding religion as a drug takes a translation strategy to reinforce the negative impression of Christianity, checks literary works through the publishing and censorship system. This study discusses how the multi-phased system surrounding the translation operates by applying Even-Zohar’s theory of polysystem. And it analyzes how the North Korean translators strengthen the negative impression of Christianity through the religious literacy of Moore and Ennis. As a result, it concludes that a functional change happens from an expressive text to an operative text according to the purpose of translation in North Korean translation.

The present paper introduces a computational approach to analyzing translating style based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a multivariate statistical method popularly used to classify texts and attribute authorship. The paper describes merits of using PCA for exploring translating style and explains the typical procedure involved in performing a PCA analysis on corpus data. As a case study for illustrating this approach, the paper applies PCA to investigate stylistic differences between two English translations of a Korean novel, using most frequent 1-gram, 2-grams and 3-grams as linguistic features. The results reveal a marked distinction across all three PCA analyses between the two translated versions, which include differences in vocabulary diversity, reference chains, syntactic structure and use of general nouns in referring to fictional characters.
