This study aims to use narrative inquiry to draw attention to the issues South Korean government interpreters face while working with the government-wide support system for non-English interpretation and translation. I conducted semi-structured interviews with two interpreters from different levels of experience discussing topics such as their job titles, employment status, working conditions, treatment and perception, the distribution of their workload, and the anchoring of the system. The results demonstrate that the system improves the consistency of translation, the quality of interpretations, helps interpreters better understand the government’s policies and programs, and reasserts the authority of interpreters to request documents within the civil service. However, interpreters mentioned their job insecurity as a major issue limiting the system’s benefits. Interpreters were also shown to diverge on the views of the importance and fair distribution of administrative tasks in addition to their roles as interpreters and translators. This study on the government-wide support system for non-English interpretation and translation and government interpreters hopes to contribute to lay the foundation for the expansion of research on South Korean national or governmental agencies or systems dedicated to translation and interpretation.

With the recent significant advancements in AI technology, the internal and external environment of interpretation education is rapidly changing. In particular, the generative AI tool ChatGPT-4 has shown a remarkable improvement compared to previous versions. Given these developments, this study aims to explore ways to integrate AI technology into professional interpretation education. To this end, the study will first analyze the performance of AI interpreters at present and compile recent AI-based interpretation research published in academia. Using these observations, the study will explore the feasibility of applying AI tools to professional interpretation practice. Second, the study seeks to provide opportunities for interpretation professionals to leverage these technological advancements to enhance their capabilities by proposing methods to integrate AI technology into future interpretation education programs. In doing so, the study aims to offer an understanding of how AI technology can complement and expand human linguistic and non-linguistic abilities and provide important insights into the future development direction of the interpretation field.

The purpose of this study is to improve the translation of proper nouns in the story from Korean to Arabic going beyond mere transliteration. It is commonly believed that proper nouns, specially names, are solely phonetically transliterated. However, as I explain in this article through previous research and analysis, proper nouns are considered culture items and are translated using alternative methods such as replacement, substitution or explanation. In this context, my study focuses on the translation of proper names in the Korean short story Yoo Yeon-jeon, which features numerous character names. The Arabic translation of the story depended heavily on phonetic adaptation for all names, causing difficulties for Arabic readers to distinguish between characters and comprehend the narrative as a whole. Through the analysis I pointed out four techniques that can be used in translation of names in order to help the reader distinguish between the characters in the story. These techniques are 1- Addition of relative reference words to the names, 2- Addition of words indicating titles of the character, 3- Partial transliteration of long names, 4- Replacement of names with relative reference words . These methods were applied in the story through examples for better translation.

This study explores aspects of the ‘Translation in Korean Teaching’ (TIKT) class in which there is a convergence between Korean language teaching and professional translation and interpreting teaching. As the TIKT classes are taught by teachers with Korean language or professional translation and interpreting backgrounds, we interviewed eight teachers to look into their teaching practices in the TIKT class, conducting in-depth and keyword analyses. In the analysis of the interviews, we examined various aspects such as class goals, class activities, teachers and learners’ roles, and identified some differences among the groups in terms of their strategies to achieve teaching goals, organizations of teaching content and procedures, and specific teaching techniques. First, TIKT teachers followed Korean language teaching procedures but adopted professional translation and interpreting teaching techniques. Second, the keyword analysis of the interviews revealed the teachers employed different learning reinforcement strategies in their classes reflecting their educational and professional backgrounds. The results of the study are meaningful in that they reveal how TIKT classes are implemented by the teachers with different educational and professional backgrounds, thereby providing some clues as to how to further rationalize its teaching in the future.

This study highlights the importance of official translation guidelines and intra-and inter-institutional style guides for quality assurance in Korean legal translation institutions. As specifications required by ISO 20771, translation guidelines serve as benchmarks for quality assessment and control, as well as for ensuring accountability among translation participants. Institutional style guides, meanwhile, go beyond editing and formatting instructions, by attaining legal, linguistic, and technical quality assurance. Specifically, they regulate the consistent naming and cross-referencing of structural elements within legal texts, thus ensuring clarity in interpretation. Drawing from the practices of the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) and other EU legal translation institutions, this study examines the key components of translation guidelines and style guides for legal translation institutions. Additionally, a case study involving 10 Korean versions of international laws reveals inconsistencies and disorganization in hierarchical levels and cross-referencing expressions, underscoring the necessity of developing style guides to address these issues.

Simultaneous interpreting is recognized as one of the most demanding activities in the linguistic field, necessitating rapid judgment and decision-making regarding both linguistic and non-linguistic variables. Extensive and repetitive training is necessary to become a conference interpreter, with professional institutions employing various educational methods to develop these skills. The acquisition and improvement of simultaneous interpreting skills rely on identifying individual learners’ issues and engaging in learner-led deliberate practice. This study aims to apply the theory of deliberate practice to simultaneous interpreting education, examining learners’ practice processes and verifying the method’s effectiveness. The study involved ten learners studying Russian-Korean simultaneous interpreting at a graduate school of interpreting and translation. The instructor, who is also the researcher of this study, explained the concept of deliberate practice to students and encouraged its implementation during class sessions. Subsequently, a brief survey and interviews were conducted with learners who engaged in deliberate practice. The findings of this study partially verified the effectiveness of the deliberate practice method in interpreting education.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a technology training course for postgraduate students of translation and interpretation. The course aimed to lower both psychological and practical barriers to technology by providing students with hands-on experience with various technological tools that can aid translation and interpretation. The course enrolled 28 students specializing in Korean-English, Korean-Japanese, and Korean-Chinese translation and interpretation. Given its focus on technology education, the course covered both general and T&I-specific technologies. Students explored and utilized a range of software, including tools for building specialized glossaries, generative AI, speech recognition, subtitle generation, and computer-assisted interpretation and translation. The course was co-taught by two instructors and employed a mixed format, combining online sessions with individual learning activities and in-person practical classes, following a flipped learning model. In the final week, students applied the theoretical and procedural knowledge they had acquired throughout the semester to translation or interpretation tasks of their choice and submitted reflective practice reports as their final assignments. Survey results indicated a high level of student satisfaction. This was attributed to the ample practice opportunities, exposure to diverse technologies, the flipped learning format, and the instructional methods that integrated technology into the workflow of translation and interpretation.

This pioneering study examines the medical exchanges between Joseon and Japanese intellectuals, particularly through the medical conversation sessions conducted during the Joseon Tongsinsa missions, from the perspective of translation and interpretation. It provides empirical evidence that these medical conversation sessions can be framed as translation and interpretation activities, highlighting how two groups with different languages met and communicated, and how the knowledge from one group was transformed and disseminated in an understandable form to the other group. Additionally, this study illustrates that the medical exchanges via the Joseon Tongsinsa surpassed the traditional view that advanced knowledge flowed unilaterally from Joseon to Japan. It demonstrates that Western medical knowledge, initially absorbed by Japan, was being transmitted to Joseon. However, this advancement in Japanese medicine through the assimilation of Western medicine did not ultimately reach Joseon. The reason for this is that the Joseon intellectuals who participated in the 11th Tongsinsa mission of 1763-1764, despite observing the dialectical progress of Japanese medicine, were reluctant to adopt it. Consequently, the medical Q&A sessions conducted during this 11th Tongsinsa mission were, in effect, the last official medical exchanges between Joseon and Japan.
