Chinese translation education began and spread as part of practical training in Chinese language education. The translation education was used as a tool of language acquisition, and thus the Chinese translation education was abnormally expanded. Therefore, in this study, it was clarified that the aim of the undergraduate translation education is to cultivate the competence of translation. For the 'process - oriented teaching' of the undergraduate course, ‘translation diary’ was suggested as a method of translation classes. Also, based on the students' statements written in the translation diary, this study analyzed how the translation competence is cultivated through the undergraduate course. In conclusion, 'translation knowledge competence' and 'instrumental competence', which are sub-competence of translation competence, were influencing students' 'translation competence'. At the beginning of the translation class, the students' problems were focused on solving the problem of linguistic level. However, as the lessons progressed, the focus of the students' problems shifted to solving the 'problem of translation level'. And this study confirmed that the strategic competence was improved in this process. Translation diary is a great tool for 'process-oriented teaching' and a good teaching methodology for translation education researchers.

Web labels, the titles of website categories, play an important role in helping website visitors find what they are looking for. As interface texts, however, they have drawn little scholarly attention in the field of translation studies. This study aims to investigate translated web labels of eight Korean corporate websites. Based on the view that web labels are completed texts in their own right and therefore should meet the textuality standards established by Beaugrande and Dressler (1981), the analysis is carried out from the framework of seven textuality criteria (cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality).

The purpose of this study is to describe the features of Korean-Chinese translation of cultural terms in The Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture. To this end, the study analyzes the features of translation strategies applied to Korean-Chinese translation of cultural terms from the above encyclopedia in terms of acceptability and adequacy by comparing them with the preceding analysis results of Korean-Chinese translation of cultural terms. After investigating the translation strategies of 230 entries in The Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture, this study compare them with the preceding results of analyses on Korean-Chinese translation of cultural terms. The results show that first, the use of graphological translation increased; second, replacing with a correspondence decreased in frequency; third, transliteration was seen. Consequently, this study identifies that emphasis is put on adequacy in The Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture on the ground of its genre compared with the other translations of cultural terms.

With growing importance of community interpreters in line with the increased cross-border migration around the globe and the development of sophisticated translation tools, the distinction between professional, or trained interpreters, and non-professional interpreters is becoming vague. While many call for the need to redefine the relationship, there is still a subtle yet widespread tension between the two groups of interpreters. Against this backdrop, this paper looks into sermon interpreting and argues that sermon interpreters and professional interpreters, though different in strength and approaches, can have a productive relationship. An actual case of collaboration between two sermon interpreters and six professionally trained interpreters took place at the Call2all Congress Korea 2016, which was held in Korea for five days from June 27 to July 1, 2016. The event which provided consecutive interpreting service confirmed that both groups can complement and learn from each other. For example, professional interpreters can learn the effective delivery skill of sermon interpreters, including verbal and non-verbal communication factors, while sermon interpreters can learn the code of conduct for professional interpreters.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility of using key word analysis of corpus linguistics methodology in the translation quality assessment in legal genre. The conventional approach in translation quality assessment focuses on the achievement of equivalence between the source text and the target text. However, this kind of strong emphasis on preserving the letter of law often disrupts the understanding of the target reader, thus causing default in securing the same legal effect intended in the translated legal text. Against this backdrop, this study adopts more reader-oriented approach in legal translation quality assessment based on the concept of textual fit proposed mainly by Biel (2014). Focusing more on the expectancy norm of the target audience, this mode of assessment evaluates the extent to which the translation fits into the non-translated convention of the relevant sub-genre of legal language, thus lessening the cognitive processing efforts of the target reader. This paper suggests a model for assessing textual fit by examining the overused lexical, grammatical and semantic patterns of English-translated Korean statutes compared to non-translated English statutes, based on hierarchical key word analysis results provided by Wmatrix.

This paper aims at taking a critical intervention into current discourses on ‘globalization of Korean literature’, which focuses on translating Korean literature into English and winning a Nobel Prize in Literature. The current discourses focus on enhancing national image and inducing economic benefits to Korea. In this government-led export-driven cultural policy, translation plays a minimal role as a tool, and translation strategies are customized to target culture, preventing various translations. On the other hand, the idea of ‘world literature’ presented by Goethe emphasizes exchange, dialogue, and communication among small literatures of the peripheries. In this concept of world literature, it is critical to identify particularities of peripheral literatures and to respect those particularities when translating. Translation is the only possible way to pursue world literature, which allows literature to give its particular values and messages to mankind. This paper, therefore, suggests ‘world literature’ as a way forward for globalization of Korean literature.

Technical advances have led to the advent of new forms of visual material in conference settings – the most notable of them being PowerPoint presentations. Long gone are the days when hastily scribbled notes would be delivered to the booth at the last minute, which allowed conference interpreters little to no time to prepare for. Instead, they now enjoy access to elaborately prepared PowerPoint presentations delivered online in advance. However, interpreters are now faced with new issues as PowerPoint presentations tend to differ in both style and density, sometimes exposing the interpreter to too much information while at others providing next to no information should the presentation be mostly image rather than text-based. The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into the perception that interpreters hold of such PowerPoint presentations when it comes to preparing for a conference.

Japanese articles on Korean entertainment news can be found on comprehensive portal sites and dedicated "Hallyu(Korean wave)" websites, as well as in the "Hallyu" category of general websites. However, there are no Korean websites which cover Japanese entertainment news. It can be argued that the availability of Hallyu news on Japanese websites is a sign of the high level of interest shown by the Japanese. In addition to entertainment news, concert tickets and tourist information can also be found in the Hallyu category, indicating a link between entertainment articles and tourism. Thus, this paper considers translated entertainment articles to be important and aims to examine the translation strategies employed to make such translations easily understood by Japanese readers. The usage rate of predicate ellipsis is high in entertainment articles when compared to other genres. This study processes translation strategies by investigating the differences in this element between Japanese articles and Japanese translations of articles.
