The present study observes speakability in English-Korean picture booktranslation. Speakability is defined as the capacity to arouse rhythm forreading-aloud of picture books. There has not been much research intospeakability to date, perhaps due to its nature refusing to be easilydefined. Nevertheless, it is an essential element in picture books asyoung children learn language first through listening rather thanreading, and enjoyable book-reading experience will ultimately leadthem to become life-long readers. As each language has its own language resources for speakability, Korean translations of English picture books are expected to employ itsown devices for speakability. This study looks into three English booksof the same author and their translations to observe how thetranslations enhance speakability, and suggests some strategies toincrease speakability in translations. It is hoped that this study can laythe basis for further research into speakability in picture books.

News translation has been generally regarded as a typical form ofinstitutional translation, but little attention has been paid to whatexactly the ‘institution’ means and how the emerging form of newstranslation with both institutional and non-institutional features can beexplained within the framework of institutional translation. This papersets out to explore the definitions of institution and the boundaries ofthe concept of institutional translation with particular reference toNewspro, an Internet-based, non-profit alternative media outlet devotedto translating foreign news on political and social issues in Korea. Bycomparing Newspro’s translation with fan subtitling, as well as withtranslation by Yonhap News Agency where the most typical form ofinstitutional translation takes place, the paper examines the similaritiesand differences between institutional, non-institutional, and mixed-typetranslation and discusses the social implications of the findings. Itconcludes by highlighting the need to study the emergence of newforms of translation as a social phenomenon.

The Foreign Language Translation Center (FLTC) in Korea TourismOrganization (KTO) has served as a control tower for translating foreignlanguages specifically designed for tourism promotions, special events ortravel related materials, since KTO installed Foreign LanguageTranslation Center on the premises. This is unprecedented and might bethe first of this kind. This paper aims to study the progress ofestablishing a foreign language translation center inside the governmentorganization; the inner or outer conditions before establishing FLTC, theprocess of installing and operating FLTC, and the effect of establishingFLTC on the other sectors of KTO will be examined. Despite the factthat tourism translation takes up a mere 10% of the entire public sectortranslation, the increased amount of in-bound foreign tourists and thedirect and indirect influence of promotional brochures on the tourists hasenabled establishing a translation center inside the governmentorganization. Furthermore, the collaboration between linguistic expertsand policy makers in tourism is noteworthy to establish this special bodyfor translation, and has the implied significance to the public sectortranslation system. Consequently it is plausible to consider the factors that made this possible, which will be modeled as a precedent infounding the potential public translation center. Establishing the publictranslation center will ultimately improve the quality of translation andwill contribute to the creative economy by cultivating a new generationof translators and creating job openings.

Understanding Interpretation Students : Their motivations and expectations

To improve educational curricula and enhance effectiveness of pedagogicalactivities, educators need to make efforts to understand their learners. Inthis context, the purpose of this paper is to investigate and documentmotivations and expectations of students in an interpretation andtranslation program. In the study, 23 first-year students in a graduateprogram of interpretation and translation produced written essays on theirmotivations, which were qualitatively analyzed in terms of variousmotivational types in order to explore what motivated them to pursue thiscareer path. The preliminary findings suggest that their motivations werenot only intrinsic but also extrinsic in the sense that they expect variousinstrumental benefits associated with the program. Also, their successfulEnglish language learning experiences and positive images of interpreterswere identified as key motivating factors for the learners. The paperdiscusses major findings and their pedagogical implications.

This paper studies transitivity changes in English-Korean translation ofchildren’s literature in comparison with those in English-Korean translationof adults’ literature. It applies Halliday’s functional grammar in order toidentify if meaningful patterns exist depending on the types of processesthat are the linguistic realizations of experiential aspects of the world. Theanalysis shows different patterns of transitivity changes between thetranslation of children’s literature and the translation of adults’ literature. In children’s literature, it is more obvious that the translation of verbsis done in a manner of strengthening the dynamics of the stories:material processes, or the verbs of doing/happening, show the biggestincrease among all the processes, and a large portion of relationalprocesses, or the verbs of being/having, and other less active processes,are switched into material processes or sometimes behavioral processeswhereas a large portion of mental processes, or the verbs of sensing,are deleted in TT. In contrast, adults’ literature translation shows amoderate increase in material processes as well as mental processeswhile showing less omissions in verbal processes used for quotationthan those in the translation of children’s literature.

The aim of the paper is to investigate possible differences in thematicprogression patterns between English translations of Korean onlinetourist texts and comparable authentic English texts. To achieve thisgoal, the study adopts Daneš’(1974) and McCabe’s(1999) classification ofthematic progression methods as a basis for analyzing texts collectedfrom Korean and US government tourism websites, using manualcoding with UAM CorpusTool. Data analysis reveal a number ofimportant disparities in thematic progression between the two corpora. The paper discusses these findings and also makes some practicalsuggestions on how to make translated texts more persuasive to thetarget reader in an effort to achieve their intended communicative goals.

This article examined an English into Korean simultaneous interpretationin a TV studio by a non-professional interpreter to cover the AsianaAirlines San Francisco airport accident on July 6, 2013. A computeraided analysis of the temporal aspects of the interpretation revealed thatthe interpreter who was found to be a reporter working for theinternational division of the TV station demonstrated statistically higherspeech proportion and SPM than the speaker at sentence level whileleaving exceptionally long EVS and TTS. On the other hand, sheomitted a significant portion of the original speech in her interpretation. As a result, the interpretation ended up being consecutive interpretationrather than simultaneous interpretation as she faithfully covered onesentence at a cost of incoming several sentences. This clearly shows thereporter failed to distribute her information processing capacity toseveral sub modules involved in simultaneous interpretation as shemight not have undertaken the necessary training. Although sitting inthe studio without a headphone to block noise and interference from herown voice might be partly attributable to the poor interpretation, thisbasically attests that simultaneous interpretation should be carried outby professional interpreters who underwent the training of listening andspeaking concurrently and maintain subtle balance among competingefforts.

This paper explores alternative pedagogical approaches for undergraduateconsecutive interpreting courses. A number of approaches are discussed,including traditional learning, individualistic learning and cooperative learning. The pros and cons of the three approaches are discussed and are adapted tothe context of interpreting classes. Different combinations of the threeapproaches are applied to two different consecutive interpreting courses basedon needs analysis and course characteristics including directionality. For theBA consecutive interpreting course, traditional learning, individualisticlearning, and cooperative learning are applied. For the AB consecutiveinterpreting course, traditional learning and cooperative learning are applied. At the end of the course, a survey was conducted to understand students’perceptions on the alternative approaches. Overall, students were satisfiedwith the three approaches. The disadvantages of individual approaches couldbe complemented by combining different approaches together. Based on thefindings of the survey and class observations, this paper proposes alternativepedagogies of consecutive interpreting that facilitate motivation,interdependence, individual responsibility, and cooperation.
