This study aims to examine the characteristics and actual state of medical interpretation in the Japanese Colonial era. During the Japanese Colonial era, the Japanese language dissemination policy was implemented earlier in the medical field compared to the other fields. Accordingly, the interpreting roles disappeared even from the bureaucracy system of the Government-General of Joseon Hospital. However, as various data reveal that the demand for interpreters remains, it is assumed that substantial difficulties in communication in medical fields must have persisted. Newspaper articles and magazine serial novels are included as the sources to be used to infer the actual situation at the time. Of course, articles were censored at the time, and serialized magazine novels may have its own limitations due to its fictional nature, but considering the absolute insufficiency of related historical materials, they could be deemed as meaningful data to confirm the actual situation to some extent. Through these data, it was possible to infer that various types of interpretation existed in medical settings at the time, including interpreters, medical staff, and family members. In addition, for the perspective of the role of the interpreter, it was found that it had characteristics of community interpreting, such as the interpreter answering on behalf of the patient or scolding the guardians on behalf of the medical staff. The present study has its significance in that it analyzed and considered the medical field at the time from the perspective of interpretation as seen in the media.

Rapid technological advancements have led to unprecedented changes across various industry sectors, including translation. It is imperative to prepare students for these technology-driven changes. Thus, this study presents the design and implementation of a translation module with future-oriented pedagogical goals in an undergraduate program. To validate the need for training, this paper explores domestic and overseas cases and assesses the expectation of students in the class. Previous research on translation technology training is reviewed, and the appropriate technology to be introduced in the class is explained. Furthermore, the paper discusses what should be taught about post-editing (MTPE) and computer-assisted translation (CAT) and how the content should be delivered. The paper also reviews traditional translation competence and proposes the right balance between technology and translation training. Finally, based on the above discussion, the paper suggests helpful tips for translation technology training in undergraduate settings.

With the increase in the number and size of in-house translator/interpreter teams in Korean companies, research on in-house translation is growing in its importance. This paper, in this vein, aims to conduct an analysis of the studies conducted so far on in-house translation in Korea by applying Pierre Bourdieu's sociological concepts and propose a future direction to lay a foundation for in-depth research into in-house translation. Bourdieu's sociology is especially relevant to in-house translation in that it described a dialectic relationship between individual and structure, which offers a comprehensive perspective to construe complex dynamics between individual translators and the organizations they belong to. According to the analysis, the research in this realm can be further deepened in a way that denotes the interrelation between different tiers of habitus of in-house translators as well as the two-way interaction between in-house translators and their organizations. Furthermore, the interplay among in-house translators can be examined in detail by investigating in-house translators' collective efforts or conflicts to gain symbolic or social capital within the same field.

In response to market changes and evolving social landscapes, the competences expected from Korean-Chinese translators and interpreters by employers have undergone significant transformations. Against this backdrop, a comprehensive investigation into market requirements is essential to enhance students’ competitiveness and employability. This study employs content analysis of job advertisements to derive empirical data for understanding translator and interpreter competence. Drawing on a framework derived from literature research, the study conducts a comparative analysis of 120 job advertisements sourced from leading job search portals in Korea and China. The primary goal is to identify the competences emphasized by Korean and Chinese employers when recruiting Korean-Chinese translators and interpreters, and specify the competences required for freelancers and in-house employees. The findings reveal that bilingual competence and extra-linguistic knowledge are considered indispensable by both Korean and Chinese employers. Notably, Korean employers particularly emphasize Chinese language proficiency and medical domain knowledge, while the Chinese market puts priority on Korean language proficiency and familiarity with K-culture. In addition to these core competences, various other distinctions in requirements between the two countries emerge from the analysis. In light of these results, three suggestions are proposed in this paper to enhance students' competitiveness and employment prospects.

This paper aims to shed light on the distinction of translation competence between professional translators and translation major learners by going over the translation error at lexical level that translation major learners often make in literary translation and comparing them with professional translators’ translation of the same work. In PACTE’s study, translation competence is made up of five sub-competencies as well as psycho-physiological components. The five sub-competence is bilingual sub-competence, extra-linguistic sub-competence, knowledge about translation sub-competence, instrumental sub-competence and strategic sub-competence(2003: 58). Translation error can be used as a standard for measuring translation competence. In this paper, error patterns of translation major learners were classified into five categories: Errors in vocabulary related to culture, Errors caused by interference of Sino-Korean word, Errors due to conceptual meaning, Errors in correspondence between vocabularies, Error in selecting advanced vocabulary. By way of conclusion, this paper had revealed the translation error’s meaning in the distinction of translation competence between two groups.
