The purpose of this study is 1) to test whether students’ vocabulary knowledge, reading competency, and topic knowledge form a significantcomponent of students’ translation performance and 2) to explore thevarying degree of effects each component has on students’ translationperformance. To this end, 60 undergraduate freshmen taking atranslation course were measured on their general vocabulary knowledgeand reading competency and on the degree of familiarity with two textswith distinct topics. The students then translated the two texts andwere evaluated on their translation. Statistical technique of multipleregression was used to investigate the relationship between students’translation performance and the three variables mentioned above. Theanalyses showed that students’ general vocabulary knowledge andreading competency independently had a significant effect on translationperformance, while the students’ topic knowledge was found not to havea significant effect. Of general vocabulary knowledge and readingcompetency, general vocabulary knowledge explained largerportion(19.9%) of the variability in students’ translation performance thanreading competency(12.8%). Vocabulary knowledge and readingcompetency combined explained for 20.7% of the variance. Implicationsof these findings on translation programs for undergraduate students arediscussed along with suggestions for future studies.

This paper reviews the patterns shown in the translation of Same Shape Chinese Characters of Synonym(SSCCS) and the translation ofconjunctions in a Japanese text when translated into Korean. Theanalysis showed the following results: In terms of the translation ofSSCCS, a corresponding translation into the same form was mostfrequently observed, followed by an equivalent form that is onlypartially altered, and by omission. The same results were observed inall genres, indicating that there is a strong tendency to preserve andreflect the vocabulary used in the ST into the TT when translatingSSCCS. In terms of the translation of conjunctions, translation ofconjunctions into conjunctions was observed most frequently, but withvaried degrees between different genres of texts. In novels, 84.885% ofthe conjunctions were translated into conjunctions, while in businessessays, the percentage was a mere 59.49%. As for translation of novelsfrom Japanese to Korean, whether it was in terms of vocabulary ortext, there was a strong tendency to preserve and reflect thecharacteristics of the ST onto the TT. Meanwhile, for business essays, there was a tendency for SSCCS to be translated into the same form. But in terms of texts, such as with conjunctions, a wider variation oftranslations were observed compared to the genre of the novel. Considering this difference, it can be assumed that the translator’ sdiscretion is greater in the genre of business essays than in novels. However, the above observations were derived from two pieces of textsin each genre, or a total of four translated texts and therefore anincrease in the number of texts to be analyzed is suggested for a moreobjective result.

This paper presents a summarized results of translation error analysisof the website translation from Korean to English in 23 publicorganizations including government ministries and local governments aswell as various public institutions in the fields of culture and tourism, art and Korean studies. For the purpose of analysis, ten common errortypes have been identified as a basic framework for analysis throughpreliminary data collection, re-categorization of translation errors, literature review on the criteria of translation evaluation, andbrainstorming among researchers of four different languages, English,Japanese, Chinese, and French. The results of the analysis show that, compared with the previous study(Park, 2007), the overall translationquality has improved with much reduced surface-level errors likegrammar, spelling or punctuation errors. Instead, the lack of consistencyhas been identified as the most frequent errors in English translation, stemming from the lack of standardized translation guidelines and theinconsistent application of existing translation guidelines. In translatingcultural contents, this paper suggests the need for meaning-basedtranslation in addition to simple Romanization.

This paper sums up and discusses the interview data of Korean government institutions’ personnels in charge of translation. The dataa bout the characteristics of the personnel, translation process, translation quality control shows which problems exist in government institutions’ translation and what makes that problems. Government institutions’ translation is still far behind of systematic practice orquality control, partly because of frequent replacement of personnels-in-charge; translation as a small part of the personnel’sworkload, not as a main focus; open tendering to find translation suppliers, in which price is concerned much more than quality.

Explicitation has been studied extensively in Translation Studies andconsidered as one of the translation universals, but the research on thisphenomenon in the mode of simultaneous interpreting(SI) has beenrelatively limited. This study aims to examine patterns of explicitationand implicitation in simultaneous interpreting from Korean to Englishby eight student interpreters. In addition, patterns in which connectivesare used in SI are also investigated. Preliminary findings indicate thatimplicitation occurs more frequently than explicitation in simultaneousinterpreting, which is influenced by various constraints intrinsic to thismode of language mediation. With regard to connectives, additions arethe most common type of shifts. Motivations for the observed patternsand their implications are discussed.

The aim of the study is to investigate whether translation universalhypotheses as a measure of textual fit between translated andnon-translated texts can be used to account for the naturalness oftranslation as suggested by Chesterman(2004). As a way of exploringthe research question, two English translations of the same Koreanfiction were analyzed for differences in mean sentence length, lexicaldensity and type-token ratio, which are associated with simplification, and lexical bundles as a linguistic manifestation of normalization. NativeEnglish readers rated the naturalness of the two translations. Theanalysis finds that as far as the two translations are concerned meansentence length, lexical density and type-toke ratio are not reliablepredictors of naturalness in translation, while lexical bundles can be anexplanatory variable.

This paper aims to study the methods of knowledge mediation that maybe used in reproducing the original texts written for Russian readersinto their translations for Korean readers. The object of analysis isRussia Focus published jointly by Russia Beyond The Headlines(RBTH) and JoongAng Ilbo in South Korea since September 2012. Russia Focus is a current affairs journal that attempts, for the first time in South Korea to translate and deliver the articles originally written for Russian readers, that depict various changes happening in Russia, to Korean readers. In Chapter 2, the way of combination between knowledge and information as observed in communicationamongst people, and its correlation with translation would be discussed, focusing on the relevance theory. The detailed analysis method spresented in Chapter 3 are largely made up of two parts. One is thecomparison between the original and translated texts, and the other isthe research into actual demand of translators and readers for giving additional information. To compare the original and translated texts, thearticles published in Russia Focus are matched with their translations to extract the parts where additional information is given, and they arepresented in two ways according to the contents and translation methods. To find out the demand for the necessity of giving additional information, a survey is conducted for potential translators and readers, and the outcome is put together. Finally, in Chapter 4, the findings ofboth analyses are combined in order to discuss and present specific translation methods required for Korean readers to actively digest the articles written for Russian readers.

This research aims to provide the guideline for systematic translation of PR materials for overseas use. For this purpose, the paper suggests aspects that require special attention when translating culture specificterm. First, a theoretical review of culture specific term translation was conducted(transliteration, semantic translation, proper nouns, andromanization). Then, after examining prevalent common practices foundin the existing guidelines and translations of PR material for theoverseas use, this paper suggests important points that need to beconsidered when setting translation guidelines in the future. One of thekey characteristic found in the translation of the current PR materialsfor overseas use which are distributed by diverse government departments is lack of consistency in the use of terminology as well asin the translation method. The same problem could be found in theguidelines prepared by diverse government departments. Also, whentranslating proper nouns, often times, Roman alphabets were used uniformly without considering uniqueness of the pronunciation systemintrinsic to each language. Of course, it is realistically not possible totranslate reflecting all the specific cases in order to secure consistentorthography. However, at least more endeavors should be devoted inorder to deliver accurate Korean pronunciation. Instead of conducting translation of PR materials by each individual government department, there should be one single primary department administering the wholetranslation process and providing uniform guidelines. Finally, in order toproperly deliver the delicacy and excellency of the Korean cultureoverseas, more efforts should be exerted getting closer cooperationamong the experts in Koreanology, linguistics, and translation studies, who have comprehensive experience and knowledge in Korean culture as well as in foreign languages.

This paper attempts to examine and analyze the translated texts of the undergraduate students participated in a translation class based on interpretive theory of translation and to see the feasibility to apply atranslation theory in undergraduate translation classes. Undergraduate translation education appears to be focused language educating, it needsto be balanced translation theories and translation practices to develop training methods according to students’ language proficiency. As theobject of analysis, we chose the translated texts that undergraduate students had no difficulties to understand source texts to exclude theanalysis of linguistic errors. Many of the the translated texts of the undergraduate students revealed the problem of code switching, dividedinto two groups: a word-for -word literal translation and asentence-for-sentence literal translation. Students have difficulties tounderstand that words have to be re-expressed in various meanings depending on the context. And not understand semantic relationships between sentences. The main concepts of the interpretive theory oftranslation including the concept of deverbalization will help to eliminatethe habits of code switching that often appear when translating.

This study aims at identifying the status of news translators in media organizations operating in South Korea. In a survey on a total of 34 translators and reporters involved in news translation, five indicators of professional status, including education and expertise, visibility, influence, income and identity were compared between these two professional groups to gauge the relative status of news translators. The survey findings show that news translators are provided lesschance of job training than reporters, and if any, types of educationdiffer from those for reporters. This indicates that the organizations provide education expect and require expertise in news reporting forreporters while expertise in text processing for translators, possiblyboth reflecting the dichotomous perception of each professional group,as well as marginalizing and alienating news translators in theorganization. News translators suffer from lower visibility, income and smaller influence than reporters, which in turn indicates their lower status than that of reporters. Based on these findings, this research suggests the same type of education and training programmes, which is focusing on news writing,be provided both to news translators and reporters in an initial attemptto improve the relatively low status of news translators.
