- This paper presents a summarized results of translation error analysisof the website translation from Korean to English in 23 publicorganizations including government ministries and local governments aswell as various public institutions in the fields of culture and tourism,art and Korean studies. For the purpose of analysis, ten common errortypes have been identified as a basic framework for analysis throughpreliminary data collection, re-categorization of translation errors,literature review on the criteria of translation evaluation, andbrainstorming among researchers of four different languages, English,Japanese, Chinese, and French. The results of the analysis show that,compared with the previous study(Park, 2007), the overall translationquality has improved with much reduced surface-level errors likegrammar, spelling or punctuation errors. Instead, the lack of consistencyhas been identified as the most frequent errors in English translation,stemming from the lack of standardized translation guidelines and theinconsistent application of existing translation guidelines. In translatingcultural contents, this paper suggests the need for meaning-basedtranslation in addition to simple Romanization.
