The legacy of translation on language teaching is not a very robust one. In fact, the use of translation has been largely prohibited in language teaching and second language acquisition, mostly due to its association with the Grammar-Translation Method. Recent studies, however, support a strong case for translation, claiming that it is an effective tool for language learning as well as a useful skill in itself. The advocates of translation are not only spearheading a revival of translation, but also exploring the possibility of applying professional translator training methods to language education. As part of that endeavor, this paper seeks to explore the interface between language proficiency and translation competence. And based on some of the identified common aspects, namely working memory and good language learner strategies, the paper goes on to explain how translator training methods can be used to enhance language proficiency, particularly with respect to adult language learners.

This study aims to devise a more systematic and realistic Spanish into Korean Translation curriculum design, by applying theories of Korean writing education that have already been proven their practical value. It also aims to validate the effectiveness of this curriculum by applying it in actual professional translation education settings. On the premise that translation is an act of writing, this study has designed learning content, evaluation guidelines, and a correction rubric. They were created from the results of the entire teaching-learning process that involved learners’ experiences of text selection, translation, and evaluation. By expanding the variety of text types and increasing the number of learners, new translation education and evaluation model from this study will continue to be applied, modified and updated to help make Spanish into Korean translation education curriculum more efficient. In addition, the findings of this study can be applied to interpretation education as well, further increasing its contribution to translation and interpretation studies.

In recent years, a growing number of multinational corporations have shifted the locus of their advertising and marketing efforts from the values of products to socio-ethical values associated with products and production. Against this backdrop, the present study aims to show how advertisements for cosmetics addressing ethical issues are translated for a local market. For this purpose, six English advertisements imbued with ethical values concerning ‘animal protection,’ ‘environmental protection’ or ‘fair trade’ (those of The Body Shop, Lush, and Neal’s Yard Remedies) are compared with their purported Korean translations from the perspective of Descriptive Translation Studies. This comparison reveals that aspects of ethics in the English advertisements were removed and/or replaced by verbal and visual signs emphasizing the functional characteristics of the product being advertised.

The paper suggests a novel method of analyzing parts-of-speech (POS) as a tool for investigating stylistic differences between translations of the same original literary work. The method consists of two stages: (1) analysis of differences in overall POS distribution and (2) in-depth investigation of POS categories with prominent differences. The method is illustrated by a case study involving two English translations of a Korean novel. Following Stage 1 analysis of differences in overall POS distribution, nouns were selected as a case for in-depth investigation to explain the marked difference observed in that category between the translations. The analysis shows that the key source of the difference is in the degree to which the two translations rely on nominalization, namely nouns derived from verbs and adjectives.

The aim of this paper is to investigate problems related to quotation of Korean discourses in Russian news articles from the perspective of translation. Assuming that the translation process is inevitably necessary for quoting different cultures, this study analyses the direct quotation of speeches of President Park Geun Hye in Russian mass media. Some former studies on this issue were reviewed, and three speeches by the Korean President as source texts and 87 Russian articles containing direct quotations on presidential discourses as target texts were analyzed, focusing on their units, types and contents. Finally, the reasons for transformation of sources texts in target news articles were examined.

This paper aims to analyze the pattern of learners' note-taking skills in the Korean-French consecutive interpretation. Data used in the analysis are (i) the quantity of note-taking as well as interpreters' choice of note taking formality (language vs non language), (ii) interpreters' choice of language (source language, target language or others) and (iii) the way they note the components of the discourse (word, phrase, clause, or sentence.) The study shows that learners experience difficulties in maintaining consistency in the notes and their reception/ production of the notation text is personal. Learners' notes revealed lack of accuracy, as well. Given the crucial role note-taking takes in consecutive interpretation, the author proposes to systemize note taking lectures focusing on correctness, clarity and concision. In the end, the author suggests that customized training should be provided to the learners.

This study aims at assessing the quality of patent translations by K2E-PAT, a Korean-English machine translation system run by Korean Intellectual Property Office, based on the analysis of machine translations of 38 semiconductor-related patent abstracts. In the study, we’ve conducted both automated evaluation widely used in the machine translation evaluation and human evaluation which can complement the shortcomings of automated evaluation. For the automated evaluation, case insensitive BLEU was adopted as an automated score, as it is the most widespread in the intellectual property field. For human evaluation, two examiners examined the quality of machine translation in terms of fidelity and readability. Both automated and human evaluations revealed the machine translations are mostly not satisfactory according to the criteria. Human evaluation indicates that the patent abstract translations contain numerous semantic and syntactic errors as well as terminological ones, severely hampering fidelity and readability. The findings highlight the need to improve the quality standards of K2E-PAT machine translation by fostering collaboration between translation experts and computational linguists.
