This study aims at providing concrete suggestions to build a useful term bank for AB translation in the public sector in Korea. Early this year, the National Institute of Korean Language opened a new website to provide “integrated service” for translation in the public sector, particularly focusing on culture and tourism. The website intends to serve as a term bank for the public-sector translation, presenting terms and their translations from various government agencies. The ultimate aim is to standardize their usage. Although it is at an early stage, there is much room for improvement. To help the translator or the main user group more efficiently, the integration should be made at the content level as well, going beyond simply providing the collected data at a single point. Hence, the study examines IATE, or the European Union’s multilingual term base, as a best-practice model. Unlike other papers mostly focusing on IATE’s current functionalities, this study provides a background picture for its creation and draws lessons from its approach to solving the challenges presented.

The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to show what problems exist in machine translation post-editing performed by translation students and (2) to suggest what should be considered in an undergraduate course on post-editing. To achieve this purpose, the researcher analysed data from a real post-editing project in which five junior students majoring in English-Korean translation post-edited Google Translate output. The source text is a medical text (consisting of about 780,000 words), written by a U.S. medical centre for the benefit of the general public. The product of the students’ post-editing was to be used for a smartphone application that would provide multilingual diagnosis services for ordinary people. The post-editing output was evaluated, using Mossop’s (2014) revision parametres: accuracy, completeness, logic, facts, smoothness, tailoring, sub-language, idiom, mechanics, layout, typography, and organisation. A close analysis of sample data revealed four problems: the students (1) performed monolingual post-editing in an inappropriate manner, (2) tried to resolve word-level issues without considering co-text, (3) paid scant attention to unnatural or ungrammatical language forms, and (4) had great difficulties in revising (translating) medical terminology. The implications of the findings for post-editor training are also briefly mentioned in the context of undergraduate translator training.
Language Choice in Note-Taking - The Case of Korean and English

The choice of language in note-taking for consecutive interpreting has been a focus of interest for many researchers. Regarding what factors may influence the interpreter’s choice of language, several variables have been suggested in the literature, including the source language (SL) vs. target language (TL) distinction, the A and B language distinction, characteristics of the languages involved, and levels of expertise. The present study examined how these factors may be related to language choices in note-taking for consecutive interpreting that involve Korean and English. Ten first-year students, ten second-year students, and three professional interpreters participated in the study to produce notes in both directions. The analysis of the notes suggests that the participants preferred to take notes in the source language (also A language) when interpreting from Korean to English. In the other direction, less experienced interpreters tended to fluctuate between taking notes in SL and TL (A language), but more experienced interpreters were found to prefer to take notes in SL (B language). Detailed findings and their implications are discussed.

This paper presents the findings of a questionnaire-based survey of 140 professional interpreters who have completed a two-year conference interpreter training in Seoul. The survey is composed of 51 multiple choice questions regarding the respondents’ individual and job-related variables including employment types, and job characteristics that may influence the job satisfaction level of professional interpreters. The results reveal differences between freelancers and in-house interpreters in terms of job factors such as their average annual income, working hours, working field, working languages, and their job satisfaction. The findings indicate statistically significant correlations between job satisfaction and marital status, the length of interpreting career, the average weekly working hours, and the dominant employment type of the respondents. Freelancers tend to be more satisfied with their jobs than in-house interpreters and so do married interpreters than unmarried ones. The longer interpreting career they have, the higher job satisfaction level they have. Interpreters working 20-30 hours per week have a higher level of satisfaction than those with longer or shorter working hours.

This study aims to determine professional backgrounds of Korean translation scholars. A survey of 80 Korean translation scholars shows that 38.8 percent of respondents are in their 40s and 37.2 percent of them were learning interpretation and translation in their mid-20s. Most of them are women (85 percent), and 57.6 percent have stayed in foreign countries for less than 3 years. 84 percent have translated or interpreted in various forms. 45 percent of them have a Masters Degree in translation or interpretation studies, and 78.2 percent of respondents have published less than 10 articles. And more than 50 percent (57.5 percent) think that the scholarly work and the translation activity have a major relationship.

This paper covers the history of translation about roughly 2,000 years of translation aesthetics in China. The development process will be divided into traditional times, modern times, and contemporary times. First of all, it introduces the origin of the aesthetics of the Chinese translations and “a struggle of Wen Zhi” and “the unity of Wen Zhi” in traditional translation aesthetics. Secondly, it focuses on “Xin, Da and Ya” of Yan Fu, “Shen Si” of “Fu Lei” and “Hua Jing” of Qian Zhongshu, which are the most famous translated aesthetic philosophy of the modern translation aesthetics. Thirdly, it reviews the systematic study of modern translation aesthetics from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century, the development process and research achievements of modern aesthetics in China. It also reviews the theoretical research results of the modern translation aesthetics. Lastly, it reviews the development of the Chinese translation aesthetics and puts forward five suggestions for the sustainable development of the Chinese translation aesthetics.

While A language proficiency is recognized as an integral element in interpreting and is therefore taught in most graduate-level interpreter training programs in Korea, there is a dearth of empirical research on Korean language enhancement courses that effectively contribute to learners’ interpreting competence. This study attempts to bridge that gap by presenting a case study of a Korean language enhancement course in a master’s degree program in Korean-English interpretation. For a group of students highly proficient in Korean as their A language, the authors of this paper taught a course with eight learning activities designed to help enhance students’ understanding and delivery of Korean in the contexts relevant to the interpreting profession. The authors leveraged their experience as professional interpreters to develop learning activities that address challenges faced in the process of interpreting, incorporating listening, speaking, reading and writing. A survey conducted at the end revealed that students found the use of parallel texts, paraphrasing, cloze exercises and text structure analysis most helpful. This case study offers a choice of learning activities future courses could be modeled upon, and also underscores students’ desire for courses carefully structured with tasks highly relevant to interpreting.
Interpreting and World Englishes - Implications for Conference Interpreters in South Korea

This article explores the implications of World Englishes for English-Korean conference interpreters in South Korea based on semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire-based survey conducted on professional conference interpreters. The majority of the participants are increasingly interpreting non-native English speeches in international conferences. They preferred to interpret native English speeches (the Inner Circle) and perceived non-native English speeches (the Outer and Expanding Circles) challenging. Varieties that are not familiar to participants, either due to lack of knowledge of the L1 of or exposure to a specific variety, were perceived as more difficult than other varieties. Non-native English induced challenges were perceived mainly at segmental and supra-segmental levels. Some varieties also imposed challenges at syntactic levels as well. Aside from linguistic features, presentation styles and speed of speech weighed in as additional challenges. Coping strategies include both online strategies and offline strategies. Most of the participants found it necessary to include World Englishes in interpreter training courses.
