It is unavoidable that adults are involved in the production or marketing process of children and adolescent literature, considering the characteristics of the genre. After observing this tendency, this study tried to examine how the dominant, wide-spread Confucianism within the Korean society intervenes in the translation of Chinese children and adolescent literature into Korean language. Among many ideas of Confucianism, this study focuses on “Elders First” concept, in particular, which has been the foundation in the creation of hierarchy and authoritarianism. To this end, this study analyzed the children’s literary works that has been published in Korea for the recent ten years and tried to categorize the recontextualization aspects of Children and Adolescent Literature based on the Confucian values of the older generation.

Stylistics in literature is so important an issue of translation studies that this issue has been studied in many different perspectives. Style includes the use of various literary techniques, and style in literature is the intentional choice of the writer. In literature, mood is expressed in narrative expressions the writer has chosen, and part of style. As such, the mood of writer’s choice in his/her literary work may serve as factors contributing to the representation of characters and scenes. Drama is different from novel or poem as it scarcely has descriptions about characters and background., is composed of oral discourses. Only discourses of characters give expression to the intentions and personalities of characters in the structure of a drama. Therefore mood is more important in dramas than in other literary works due to these characteristics of dramas. Against this background, this research will identify the influence of mood shifts in translation of dramas over the intentions and personalities of characters paper, especially by considering the characteristics of dramas and the role of mood in literature.

According to previous studies about translators’ competence for communicative translation, four sub-components have been designated to obtain and strengthen a communicative function of a translation; linguistic, textual, pragmatic, and strategic competence. Based on the categorization above, this study has analyzed an exemplary communicative translation, The House with a Sunken Courtyard, in which the translator has remarkably exercised her communicative translational competence at linguistic, textual, pragmatic, and strategic levels. The outcome of the translator’s effort to strengthen the communicative function has been critically acclaimed and thereby, wining the 12th Korean Literary Translation Award. However, the theoretical emphasis on the communicative function of a translation is one thing, and actual application of strategies for more effective function of the translation is another. Student translators have not been fully aware of the communicative role as translators and tend to stick to the word-for-word translation strategy. Therefore, students have learned some ways to be free from the structure of the source text and sought how to apply the explicitation strategy at linguistic, textual, and pragmatic level as part of an effort to strengthen the communicative function of their translations.

For a long time, the primary research subject of translation studies has been focused on linguistic signs. The study of multimodal texts drawing on various semiotic resources such as language, image and sound has been largely neglected. Against this backdrop, this paper focuses on the transfer of visual signs from static images of the picture book into dynamic images of the animation version of Shaun Tan’s The Lost Thing. Especially, the aim of this study is to explore the strategy used by the translator (adapter) to achieve the skopos of the film adaptation. As a theoretical framework for analysis, the researcher uses Kress and van Leeuwen’s model of visual design. The analysis examines three kinds of meanings, known as ‘metafunctions’, formed by the choices of semiotic resources available at the specific medium, dynamic images of film. The research findings show that how the visual signs have been adapted to achieve the balance, a seemingly incompatible purpose (skopos), between sustaining the unique atmosphere of the story and keeping audiences interested. The characteristics of this study as “intramodal” and “intermedial” translation may help translation scholars and students gain new insights into multimodal communication.

Criminal court trials in Korea guarantee the free assistance of an interpreter to defendants who are unable to understand or speak the language used in court according to Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Interpreters assisting them must be capable of interpreting at a professional level in order to guarantee them a proper defense. However, it is also important to have court interpreting norms in the form of a manual to guide interpreters towards making right ethical choices during their task. Existing education booklets for court interpreting norms in Korea are different from court interpreting manuals of advanced countries in terms of how they are written and explained. In the study, Chinese interpreters were interviewed in an effort to figure out how they perceive court interpreting norms regarding interpretation accuracy. Results of the research showed that all interpreters were aware of the court interpreting norms in Korea, but had been applying it in different adapted forms in order to satisfy institution expectancy norms.

Simultaneous interpretation is a way of interpretation that is performed under a strict time limit. During the simultaneous interpretation event, an interpreter must listen, remember, and speak concurrently, and convert Source Text to Target Text as soon as a speaker begins his or her speech. Difficulty doubles for simultaneous interpretation between languages that have different structure of information arrangement or language type; especially, translating Korean of SOV structure into Chinese of SVO structure aggravates the difficulty. In order to resolve it, emphasis is placed on using segmentation and anticipation; however, since Anticipation cannot be applied to all the sentences as a trump card, it is necessary to use other techniques complementarily. This paper supposed that repetition, simplification, and conversion are useful complements for Anticipation, and analyzed the sentential types to which the previously mentioned techniques may be applied in two Korean speeches.

As fluency is considered an important part of interpreting quality, it is important for interpreters to be able to control pauses and hesitations. In this context, this study investigated patterns of pauses and motivations for pauses in consecutive interpreting into Korean and English. In the study, ten first-year students in a graduate program of interpretation and translation performed consecutive interpreting in both directions and participated in retrospective interviews to comment on reasons for pauses in their performance. The findings suggest that there were more occurrences of pauses in unnatural places in interpreting into English than the other direction. As for the motivations for pauses, in the K-E direction, linguistic difficulties, such as searching for appropriate expressions in English and restructuring target language outputs, were most frequently cited by the participants. In the E-K direction, not only linguistic factors but also extra-linguistic factors, including note-reading and checking for logical flows, caused the participants to pause and hesitate during interpreting. The paper discusses major findings and their pedagogical implications.

The aim of this paper is to investigate problems related to translation of Korean film titles into Russian. Titles play an important role in representing a text or a film, providing readers/audience general information as well as attracting attention. The translated titles can also have influence on the acceptance of films in the target society. This study analyzes 220 Korean film titles and their translations in Russian, focusing on various types of methods used in translation. Analysis shows four methods are used, which are borrowing, literal translation, partial shift, and full shift. Some former studies on this issue will be reviewed, and four methods of translation will be analyzed to evaluate implications of translated titles on understanding of Korean films in Russia. Finally the influence of English titles on Russian translation will also be revealed.

There is a constant string tension between movie importers/distributors and the Korea Media Rating Board (hereafter KMRB) as to which rating an imported movie would be labelled, because the rating has a decisive impact on the ticket power and profit in South Korea (Park, 2013; Korean Film Council, 2014). Although ‘violence’ and ‘sexuality’, the two critical factors of Korean movie ratings as stipulated by the KMRB, can be judged not only by the screen but also its linguistic embodiments, few studies have addressed how the Korean subtitles of ‘bad language’ (Dobao, 2006), including choices of ellipsis, may influence the ratings in the South Korean context. With its focus on English DVDs rated as ‘PG15’ in South Korea, equivalent to ‘PG13’ in the US, this study explores Korean subtitles of English bad languages and their acceptability, influenced by, and dependent on, the rating. It focuses especially on the criterion of vulgarity of lines, one of the 7 criteria that KMRB stipulates for the movie rating. The study reveals KMRB’s very low acceptance tendency of sexual intercourse terms, resulting in increasing the rating of vulgarity of lines. In contrast, KMRB is tolerant of words containing violent semantic components, such as “shit” and “damn”.

This study aims to explore stylistic differences between translated and non-translated news articles and their implications. While the stylistics of literary texts has long been a favorite subject in translation studies, that of non-literary texts has drawn little attention from researchers, despite the significance in translator education. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to highlight the stylistic aspects of non-literary texts based on the checklist categories of stylistics suggested by Leech and Short (2007): lexical categories, figures of speech, grammatical categories, and context and cohesion, with a focus on the last two. To this end, techniques of corpus stylistics, including keyword analysis, are employed to examine a parallel corpus of English news articles and their Korean translations, and a comparable corpus of Korean news articles compiled by the author. The findings of this study reveal stylistic differences between translated and non-translated news articles in such stylistic features as average sentence length, demonstratives, conjunctions, and direct and indirect quotations.
