Kim, Jeongho. “The Man Who Was Killed by a Playwright: Clay in Dutchman.” Studies in English Language & Literature 43.1 (2017): 1-20. Baraka’s revolutionary theatre in the 1960s aimed at presenting a series of dramas inextricably linked to the Afro-American political dynamic. The Black Arts theatre was a radical alternative to the sterility of the Afro-American theatre then. Baraka’s revolutionary theatre was one of the Black Arts theatre repertories then. He wanted his theatre to be one of the foremost black theatres confronting the black male in his interaction with the white people as presented in Dutchman. The encounter and relationship between Clay and Lula mirrors the historical castration of black manhood since the slavery. Baraka insists that the black people cannot acquire the place and power by imitating and/or absorbing white style in the main stream of the white society. He urges and persuades the black audience not to be caught with the fantasy of harmonious co-existence with the white people through the murder of Clay, a naive and pseudo young white/black male. Park, Geumhee. “Carnivalesque Subversion in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 21-42. This article aims to use M. M. Bakhtin's perspective to examine the interrelationship between J. K. Rowling’s carnivalesque narratology and the caustic social criticism in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. In this novel, Rowling criticizes the Dursleys’ ostentatious self-display and Lord Voldemort’s paranoid power abuse for his own gratification. As a social criticism written for adolescents, this novel presents all the socially critical discussions as comic happenings with Rubeus Hagrid and children’s games or entertainment with Harry Potter. Especially, Hagrid, as Harry’s protector, can be thought of as a variation of festive and folkloric comic characters in that he is easygoing and enjoys eating and drinking, and his comments contain bitter criticisms about both Muggles and Sorcerers. Hagrid encourages Harry to overcome his traumas from the Dursleys through comic magical games and generous foods, which help Harry to reveal Voldemort's horrible conspiracies. This narration of Rowling’s, connected to Harry's heroization and Voldemort's caricaturization can be read as a decrowning/crowning play, dating back to Middle Age carnivals. Through this carnivalesque narration, Rowling enables adolescent readers to develop socioeconomic and political consciousness while reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. As a result, Rowling succeeds in developing her own narratology. (Chosun University)

Park, Jai Young. “Progressive and Marginalized: Doyle’s Visualization of the Victorian Woman’s Two Kinds of Life.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 43-61. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle illustrates two prototypes of Victorian women respectively in “A Scandal in Bohemia” and “The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger.” While the former presents a prototype of the new woman who was autonomous, sagacious, and assertive at the fin de siècle, the latter reveals the miserable reality of most women’s lifestyle in which the wife was physically and legally subject to the husband and was abused by him. The woman married in that society because a husband was the only way for her to ensure her survival; however, the once-loving husband often turned out to be a barbarous predator as in “The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger.” Focusing on the female characters in the two stories, in this paper, I will inspect the characters as manifestations of Doyle’s thoughts and examine how women are portrayed and treated and what the significance of his approaches can be. I will borrow ideas from feminist critics and some of the Victorian sociology so as to explicate Doyle’s presentation of women. (Chonbuk National University)

Byun, Hyojeong. “Reading Death Comes for the Archbishop with a Queer Code.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 63-81. This study aims to trace various queer codes in Death Comes for the Archbishop, because queer theory in the modern era does not only mean homosexuality but is elastic and includes race, class, religion, culture, and marginalized sexual identity, while permitting opportunities for people to accept everything that has its own appropriateness. So, when the work is read according to this concept of queer theory, the meaning can be rich. Father Latour, a devout Catholic priest, shows not merely the homosexual aspect of queerness by reinforcing his friendship with Vaillant, but also other immeasurable possibilities by harmoniously finding the confluence between corrupt priests in his diocese and various Native Americans in the process of his missionary work in desolate New Mexico. When reflecting that queerness is relationship-oriented, Latour's queerness has an abundance of meaning and vision in that it covers life and productivity for the future. Although the religious stories can erode this novel's queer texture, Latour embodies his priestly duties and the richest consciousness with a sense of fulfillment by elevating his own queerness in the end. Song, Kiho. “Life and Labor of Lowell’s Mill Girls.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 83-103. Lowell in Massachusetts was the first place where factory labor was introduced in America. Due to its success in the cotton industry, Lowell was once called an “Industrial Eden.” Lowell’s success was indebted not only to the adoption of new machinery and modes of production, but to the benevolent and paternal policies of the cotton industry. Numerous young girls from New England came to work in Lowell, attracted not just by the high wages and good working conditions, but by the educational opportunities the provided its employees. Lowell was a place that simulated the intellectual desire of mill operatives and helped them expand their lives. The writings of Harriet Robinson and Lucy Larcom, who worked in Lowell as mill operatives when young, clearly illustrate the meaning of life and work during its heyday of factory labor. Yum, Jeongmin. “Breaking Up the Boundary of Stage: The Non-Representational Features in Krapp’s Last Tape.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 105-124. Mimesis, the base principle of theatre since Aristotle, lost its ground in the age of modernism. Samuel Beckett, the best playwright in the twentieth century, tried to break existing theatre, subordinating representation system with Antonin Artaud and Luigi Pirandello. Throughout his writing life, Beckett searched for the possibility of non-representational theatre, rejecting realistic stage setting, conflicts among characters and logical plot. In particular, Krapp’s Last Tape was the last play that showed a leading character on the stage and was also located at the center of his change from representational play to non-representational play. Krapp’s Last Tape indicates various features defying the representational principle. This article aims to investigate the non-representational features of each dramatic element in Krapp’s Last Tape by first exploring the non-representational plot composed of the rhythm of movement and stillness. The article then analyzes the fragmented time and audiovisual images. In addition, it highlights the idea that Beckett’s non-representational play ironically represents the diversity of lives. Woo, Seungjeung. “The Meaning of Metamorphoses through Mythic Reshape by Mary Zimmerman.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 125-146. This paper examines how Mary Zimmerman appropriates and changes a canonical text, Ovid’s Metamorphoses into her own modern and feminist representation. In the theatrical aspect, she adapts the classical text and reshapes some stories in it using a feminist theatrical way, that is, giving the voice to women. She also modernizes the old stories by assigning the roles of narrators to women. This leads the audiences to contemplate upon the truth in human lives and the fixed stereotypes like myths in the society. It thus helps to understand them from different perspectives. Considering her theme, she is well known to deal with the modern case studies of abnormal personalities: those of neurosis, self-love, compulsive greed, incest, etc. She also presents the images and verbal message on the brilliant ideas about loss and change after painful experiences of love. In this right, Zimmerman, one of the cultural creative playwrights in the 1980-90s, found the modern myth which visualizes the contemporary society and embodies feminist ideas in the representation of concern for others and love in it. Lee, Bokki. “Ishiguro’s When We Were Orphans: Duality of Fantasy.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 147-166. This paper analyzes the double functions of fantasy, which has been preserved by the narrator Christopher Banks. As Freud’s grandson played Fort/Da game to recover his mastery when his mother left, Christopher started playing a detective game with his Japanese friend Akira in order to master the uncontrollable reality. The game lasts to become a fantasy world in which Christopher feels safe and grows the possibility of recovering the past haven, his home with his parents. In this sense his fantasy world functions positively to empower him to carry on in London without his parents. However, it binds Christopher around the past memory and distort his ability for objective perception of reality even in his adulthood. As fantasy has dual functions, idealism also has dual faces. The International Settlement in Shanghai symbolizes ideal future society with its mixture of races and cultures in the novel. However, when its dark hidden foundation tarnished with profit seeking and wicked intention is revealed, readers can recognize the duality of idealism. Still, the novel suggests that we should control the negative sides of fantasy, nostalgia, and idealism, and recourse to them for relief of the individual pains and destruction and shattering of the world that the individuals and the humanity may face. Lee, Eunjoo. “Law and Justice in Race and The Anarchist.” Studies in English Language and Literature. 43.1 (2017): 167-185. This paper aims to study law and justice in David Memet’s Race and The Anarchist. It analyzes two plays, based on Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive understanding of the relation between law and justice. Jack, in Race, is a typical lawyer who pursues fortune and fame, not seeking justice. Meanwhile, Susan, a new lawyer, tries to seek aspects of justice, making every effort to prove that the client, Charles is guilty. Ann, in The Anarchist, is a prison ward who takes advantage of the enforcement of the law, thinking she is dedicated to the law which obligates her to judge Cathy. Cathy was convicted of murder and has been imprisoned for 35 years. But now she is a totally reformed prisoner, feeling repentant for her mistakes. But Ann doesn’t trust her and at every step is suspicious of everything about her and is perfectly willing to give her even more penalty. Derrida doesn’t admit the ordinary idea that the law can sometimes achieve justice. He, through the way of deconstruction, tries to argue that the infinite, unaccountable, and unruled justice is not restricted by the law, but is above and beyond the law. (Sungkyul University)

Kang, Eun Young. “The Effects of Speaking and Writing Activities in Dictogloss on Learners’ Listening Abilities and Perceptions at an EFL College Context.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 187-210. This research aims at studying EFL college students’ degree of improvement in listening abilities and their responses by comparing two different dictogloss classes - writing vs speaking. Dictogloss has been proved it can help students promote their four language skills but it can be a burden for them to reconstruct by speaking and writing in English. In the pilot experiment, students preferred speaking to writing. According to students’ needs, two experimental writing and speaking classes carried out dictogloss for 3 weeks in order to analyze the degree of improvement in their listening skills. The scores of post tests showed both classes improved almost to the same degree in listening ability. However, according to the survey, the listening skill and satisfaction were much higher in the speaking class than in the writing class. The attitude of the writing class was much better than that of the speaking class. Therefore, the result of this study suggested it is suitable to choose and combine writing and speaking by considering students’ needs and levels in dictogloss class, and it showed as examples three types of dictogloss class. Kim, Hyo-Jin & Kim, Tae-Young. “Mothers’ Perception of Their Children’s Middle School English Education: Focusing on The Socioeconomic Status of Mothers in Gyeonggi Province.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 211-241. The purpose of this study is to identify differences in the perception of mothers in Gyeonggi Province on English education given to their children in middle school based on the participating mothers’ socioeconomic status. In order to address the research question, we used a mixed methods approach combining a series of questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews with mothers. The findings of this study are as follows: first, mothers from high socioeconomic backgrounds were more likely to participate in activities supporting their children’s English education. Those with high monthly income were found to actively participate in English-related events at school, help their children with homework, and have more frequent conversations with them and English teachers about learning. In addition, mothers with high educational and income levels shared information on English education with other mothers. The participating mothers’ employment status did not exert a statistically significant impact on the actions they took to support English education for their children. Regardless of their socioeconomic status, mothers insisted the government provide more practical and useful learning materials, as they felt that it would make English education more successful. Practical implications are provided. (Chung-Ang University)

Nam, Hyo Jeong & Kim, Sun-Hoi. “An Analysis of English Past Tense Form Processing: Focusing on the Experimental Result of Acceptability Judgment of Nonce Word Past Tense Forms by Non-native Speakers.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 243-269. The aim of this study was to investigate which is more adequate between the dual system model and the single system model for the processing of English past tense forms through the acceptability judgement experiment of nonce word past tense forms by Korean university students, the non-native learners of English. 41 English nonce words were chosen from Albright & Hayes(2003), and 85 Korean university students rated the acceptability of their regular and irregular past tense forms using a 7-point scale. To analyze the data statistically, mixed effects linear regression models were fitted to the data. Like English L1 adults and older children (9-10 years) (Albright & Hayes 2003, Ambridge 2010), the participants classified as highly proficient non-native learners of English exhibited the significant effect of phonological similarity to existing verbs on the acceptability of both regular and irregular past tense forms. This result shows that the single system model is more adequate in explaining the processing of English past tense forms. (Chung-Ang University)

Sohn, Joong-Sun. “Some Suggestions for Restructuring the Elementary English Course book for Grammar Teaching.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 271-292. The purpose of this paper is to make some suggestions for teachers who want to restructure their elementary English course book in order to improve the effect of teaching grammar. For effective grammar teaching to young learners, we need to take 'grammar teaching' as 'developing learners' grammar sense' for communicative production rather than 'teaching grammar rules' for accuracy. Some ideas are offered as a way to develop grammar sense in learners. First, teachers need to properly understand the relationship between communicative function and language form before they restructure their course book. Second, sentences with an action verb, not be-verb, should be placed at the front of the language course because action ve rbs, especially transitive verbs, have a distinctive meaning and help learners build the sense of word order more easily than be-verbs. Third, four basic sentence structures—WH-question, Yes-No question, Affirmative, and Negative—should be given at once for learners to be able to see the patterns of the structures. Fourth, learners attention must be drawn to the form corresponding to the communicative function, not to the object or complementary words in order not to result in vocabulary learning. Finally, to help learners grasp grammatical concepts, they need to be given opportunities to compare two contrastive forms. (Daegu National University of Education)

Oh, Maria. “Pre-service Teacher A’s and B’s English Learning Motivation and L2 Identity.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 293-316. The purpose of this study is to understand elementary pre-service teacher A's and B's English learning motivation and L2 identity embedded in English learning experience. The participants were two of 49 primary pre-service teachers who took 'English Teaching Methodology' in Spring and Fall 2015 at J teachers' college. In 2016, A and B were invited to the study because A was active and B was not while taking the class. They were interviewed three times in January and February and two times in December at a researcher's office individually about their life-long English learning experience. The following study results emerged: (1) A had a wonderful time with his uncle's family while learning English for two years at a Canadian primary school. At secondary and tertiary schools, he learned English to prepare for his English subject tests or Korean SAT(Scholastic Aptitude Test). He also enjoyed watching English TV dramas and doing SNS activities with his Canadian friends; (2) A's ideal L2 self was developed while learning English in Canada with his Canadian friends and learning test-oriented-English in Korea mainly because of his wonderful memory of Canadian primary school days; (3) Most of B's English learning was based on stress because he felt he had no choice while he had to read many highly-advanced Economics books at secondary school days with his private tutor; (4) B's ought-to L2 self was developed because he felt he was doomed to learn “NOGADA-English(노가다영어)” as one of the Koreans who need English for better future. Based on the study results, suggestions are made to develop theories and practice of Korean students' English learning motivation and L2 identity.

Cho, Young Ah. “Korean College Students’ Perception towards the Different Types of English Medium Instruction.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 43.1 (2017): 317-338. The current study explored the L2 learners’ perception towards different types of English medium instruction, mainly focusing on Korean college students. For the study, standardized evaluation tool for English medium instruction was administered to two groups, those engaged in an 100% English class and those engaged in lectures where both English and Korean are used in some proportion, with one-hundred fifty one and ninety-seven students respectively. The findings revealed that students in an 100% English class showed a greater satisfaction than those who were in combination of English and Korean class across all factors. This study also indicated that there existed significant differences between two groups in the factors of ‘overall evaluation for English medium instruction,’ ‘evaluation for professor’s English competence,’ ‘self-evaluation for students.’ Based on the findings, the pedagogical suggestions are addressed in terms of how English-medium instruction can be applicable to educational classroom settings.
