Kang, Ok Sun. “Reading Female Characters in the Religious Poetry of Felicia Hemans.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 1-20. Generally the earlier poems of Felicia Hemans can be seen to justify the existing social order, insistently celebrating the gleeful home and representing women as sustaining the private realm. However, her subtext surprisingly reveals that Hemans’s heroines suffer from the sense of loss and absence of love in the domestic sphere of the nineteenth century. The later religious poems of Hemans are striking for their support of spiritual diversity, spiritual themes, and even new concepts of women’s status. Especially in the “Sonnet: Female Characters of Scripture” published in 1834, Hemans finds a platform for presenting religion as a source of empowerment for women. Throughout these sonnets, Hemans claims the power of biblical women for herself, her writing, and the positions of women. (Dongseo University)
Kang, Jun-soo. “Gender and Power through Salome.” Studies in English Language and Literature. 39.4 (2013): 21-37. The purpose of this paper is to study Salome’s sexual desire, and her challenge against Iokanaan’s words which symbolize male power. Jacques Lacan explains the birth of the subject by using the three order: the imagery, the symbolic and the real. According to Lacan, becoming the subject is a process of overcoming Oedipus Complex by accepting his father’s name and symbolic castration. Oscar Wilde describes Salome as a very attractive subject for expressing duality of aestheticism. In Salome, Wilde not only highlights the conflict between Salome and Iokanaan but embodies the superiority of Wilde’s aesthetics to the religious world from the point of view of power game. Salome experiences ‘the mirror stage’ in that she can’t percept the object as a human or subject who has personality and subjectivity. Salome who represents Wilde’s aesthetic world is fascinated by Iokanaan’s face which involves ugliness and beauty. Wilde’s dual-sided ideas about art—beauty or ugliness, and good or evil—are always inter-dependent. The Christian world rejects good and evil, that is, there is only one side which involves good. From this point of view, in Salome, the conflict between Salome’s artistic world and Iokanaan’s religious world is very natural. After Iokanaan’s beheading which symbolizes Salome’s castration, the trouble between the artistic world and the religious world is temporarily resolved, concluding with the victory of Wilde’s aesthetics over Christianity. Kim, Mina. “Tragedy of Undifferentiated Self: A Reading of ‘A Rose for Emily’ through Family System Theory.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 39-56. This paper starts with the question, “Why does Miss Emily commit her monstrous act?” Emily killed her lover with arsenic and kept his body in her room for 40 years. To answer the question, I use Bowen’s family system theory and his concept of “differentiation of self.” That’s because Faulkner has shown his interest in family in his major works and now he specially focuses on father and daughter relationship in this short story. Emily is the only daughter with no mother, and she establishes an exclusive and dependent relationship with her father. Her father, who has pride in his family, is oppressive and dominating in this relationship and Emily fails to differentiate herself from the family ego mass. Emily, who has a low level of differentiation of self or is in a state of “no-self”, remains emotionally attached to her father. Therefore her father’s death and her lover(a substitute for her father)’s threatened loss lead her into psychotic nothingness and inability of social functioning. She retreats into her world of fantasy where there is no limit between life and death and this explains her gruesome and monstrous deed. (Jeonju University)

Kim, Seoyoung. “Interanimation and the Characteristics of Fantasy Picturebooks -Using Christ Van Allsburg’s Works.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 57-75. In exploring picturebooks, it is important to consider not only literary elements but also illustrative elements of the picturebooks. The central idea of what picturebooks do is the synergy of the words and illustrations. The interactions between words and pictures serve as ligaments that provide coherence with the stories while contributing great variety to the picturebook realm. There are picturebooks in all genres, among which fantasies have special qualities to convince readers of the unrealistic situation and make the stories logically consistent. In this study, I will examine how words and pictures work in a picturebook to create a distinctive new story using Allsburg’s wellknown fantasy picturebooks such as The Polar Express, Jumanji and Zathura. And the special qualities of fantasies in Allsburg's such adventure stories will also be scrutinized. Therefore, I’d like to show that young picturebook readers can get the advantages of reading fantasies, such as new perspectives toward the world and abilities to solve problems while experiencing the fuzzy line between realistic and fantastic stories. Kim, Yeonmin. “A Reading of Irish modernism as a Deleuzean War Machine.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 77-100. A definition of Irish modernism, confused by different perspectives on its era and ideology, can be re-illuminated by the concept of the war machine suggested by Deleuze and Guattari. In pursuit of the exteriority to the state apparatus, the deterritorial movement in the war machine resonates with that of Irish modernists, who take various lines of flight from Irish state ideology. The significance of Irish modernism as a war machine can be discussed in three ways. Theoretically examining Fredric Jameson’s Marxist discourse that analyzes Irish modernism in terms of the mode of production, I will demonstrate counter-examples found in James Joyce’s Ulysses replete with unknowability, and suggest a Deleuzean concept of the regime of signs as an alternative to Jameson’s. In comparison to the Revivalists driven by a work ethic for the establishment of the nation-state, Irish modernists, such as Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and Sean O’Casey, express resistant voices throughout their works aspiring to the exteriority to state power. As an appropriated war machine by the state, Patrick Kavanagh can also be considered a minoritarian modernist, a whistle-blower, in that he demystifies the state-founding ideology, which heedlessly romanticizes the rural Ireland. Suh, Kil-Soo. “Shakespeare and Political Justice: An Essay on Julius Caesar.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 101-117. The aim of this study is to define Shakespeare’s political justice in Julius Caesar focused on its political chaos. In this play, Shakespeare presents the various aspects of characters’ political actions and the problems of struggle between power and justice. Caesar becomes a Roman emperor. He is one of the most outstanding rulers. He holds an absolute power and authority over the whole of Rome and controls over the Roman Empire. He converts the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. But Caesar is not a complete emperor. Brutus attempts to put the Republic over his personal relationship with Caesar. He is considered as a model of Republican virtues. But Brutus is manipulated by Cassius and makes the political mistakes that bring down the Roman Republic. By examining the political problems in Julius Caesar, we can compare the political philosophy of Caesar with that of Brutus and see Shakespeare’s political attitude. (Daeshin University)

Wang, E. Chull. “Hosseini’s Novel and Peritext: Connotations of the Title of And the Mountains Echoed.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 119-140. Gerard Genette argues that the paratext consisting of peritext and epitext provides the text with a meaningful way of interpretation. It lies on the threshold of the text and affects the way the text is received by the reader, so it becomes a “threshold of interpretation.” Its main function is “to ensure for the text a destiny consistent with the author’s purpose.” Peritext consists of elements such as titles, prefaces, epigraphs, and notes whereas epitext consists of reviews, author interviews, and publishing stunt. This study picks up and uses Genette’s idea of paratext to discuss about meanings and significances of the title (peritext) of Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed. It gives a special attention to what Hosseini says in “Acknowledgments” in which he indicates the title “was inspired in part by William Blake’s lovely poem, ‘Nurse’s Song.’” It will first discuss how Hosseini’s text is related to Blake’s poem and then examine how the title as a peritext shapes, reflects, and even guides the novel’s form and narrative strategy. Lee, Suk-hee. “Shoyu Kid: Semiosis of Ethnicity and Sexuality.” Studies in English Languages & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 141-161. Ethnicity and sexuality are two most powerful signs for the white male-centered American nationalism to construct its logos and maintain the social hegemony. Thus they were very useful for the center while formidable as much for the other. Asian American literature has been in longtime efforts to demythify them as a fundamental sociocultural practice. Such efforts, however, resulted in an ironical reconfiguration of the white-dominated nationalism with some multiple ethnic centers in it. This paper starts with a doubt about cultural pluralism and assumes that Asian American texts did not go far enough to thoroughly demystify ethnicity and sexuality. To attain its small but safe territory in American nationalism they also employed the signs of ethnicity and sexuality. “Shoyu Kid” is a very unusual text in this aspect; it explores the constructiveness of these two signs until they ultimately expose their complete emptiness. Thus it turns out the most chilling story not just for the main stream but for the minority who persistently hung on the myth of ethnicity and sexuality to construct its own center. Lee, Cheol Hee. “Eliot’s Reading of Blake.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 163-180. This paper focuses Eliot’s thoughts on Blake. Eliot emphasizes on Blake’s peculiarity, praising a pure honesty in Lyric Poems. Nevertheless, Eliot asserts that Blake’s only fault is that he is inexperienced very much and his style is only limited to himself, Blake is writing his work only with his own thought and consciousness without many other rhetoric techniques. Eliot states that Blake depends too much on his own subjectivity, presenting his topics and themes with only one man’s soul in mind. Thus, Eliot suggests that a poet should have many topics to exemplify the sickness of an epoch and a fashion. Focusing on this techniques, Eliot wrote his masterpiece, The Waste Land, which accurately reveals a modern man of the 20th century. However, Eliot does not speak negatively of Blake; he compliments Blake on his “immense understanding of human nature,” “the music of a language,” “original creative gift” etc. But he insists that these aspects should be controlled by “objective reason,” “common sense” and “scientific objectivity.”(Dongyang University)

Cho, Yongjae. “Overcoming the Mother Complex and the Father-Son Conflict in Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms.” Studies in English Language and Literature. 39.4 (2013): 181-197. Three remarkable characteristics of Eugene O’Neill’s plays, especially his autobiographic ones can be summed up as follows. First, they are autobiographical both in a literal and in a spiritual sense. Second, most of the sons in them are caught in Mother Complex. Third, the fathers inflict pain on their wives, which creates a conflict between them and their sons. The Mother Complex in Desire Under the Elms appears between Eben’s dead mother and Eben. It is overcome by the strong maternal instinct and the sacrificial love of his stepmother Abbie, an embodiment of ‘Mother God,’ ‘Earth Mother,’ and ‘Easy God,’ for Eben and their sexual relationships. And the father-son conflict appears as a struggle between Cabot and his son Eben to win the ownership of the farm. It is overcome by Eben’s change as a new man and his transcending both his desire of possession of it and his father-son conflict in virtue of Abbie, especially her sacrificial love, as well as by Cabot’s new recognition of the farm and his turning to his ‘Hard God’ as before. Kim, Changho. “A Study on the Effects of Task-Based Learning in University English Classes.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 199-227. This study aims to investigate the effective English teaching through Task-Basked Learning framework in university English classes. The study was conducted by experimentation with fifty-seven freshmen students. The students participating in this study were divided into two groups, that is, a control group which performed traditional Teacher-leading Teaching and an experimental group which received Task-Based instruction. After 10 week classes, it revealed that the experimental group showed a significant increase in listening, writing and speaking as well as in the affective domains. However, it showed traditional teaching is better than Task-based Learning in reading. Based on the results of this study, we recommend that Task-Based Learning should be used in the study of listening, writing and speaking positively while other additive teaching methods are needed for reading classes in university English classes. Park, Hanki. “A Revisit to [have vp-en] Aspect.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 229-251. This paper has made a revisit to the meaning of perfective constructions. A generalization has been made that English speakers opt for a [have vp-en] construction instead of a simple present/past tense construction in order to show that the result/effect/aftermath of the former doing still obtains at the present time. With the generalization, traditional categories of perfective construction have been revised. Perfective constructions like He has caught a cold means “... he has the result of his former doing at one time point in the period leading up to the present time.” Perfective constructions like He has lived in Paris for ten years means “... he has the result of the continuous/recurrent former doing in a period leading up to the present time.” Perfective constructions of the result of a special former doing like He has heard the news means “...he has the result of the experience at one time point in the period leading up to the present time.” Perfective constructions of the result of another special former doing like I have finished typing the letter means “...I have the result of the completion at one time point in the period leading to the present time.” (Chonnam National University)

Jang, So Young & Lee, Sung Young. “Validation of a Survey Instrument for Grammar Learning Strategy of College Students.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 253-277. The purpose of this study aims to validate a survey instrument for grammar learning strategy in English so as to develop a standard survey instrument. The survey consisted of 52 items with a 5-point Likert scale and was designed based on Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL). The items were revised partly in order to reflect grammar learning process. Research was conducted with a total of 335 college students, and the data were analyzed using Rasch measurement model. The results were summarized in terms of two perspectives; validity and reliability of survey instrument. First, in terms of content validity, the study found the overall content validity adequate, and survey could measure unidimensional construct. In addition, it was found that the 5 point-scale was appropriate to elicit responses. However, some recommendations were made for improvement. Redundancy among items was found based on the analyses of fit statistics and point-biserial correlation. Second, the results showed that reliability of a survey instrument including both items and respondents was high based on the index of reliability. (Kunsan National University)

Jung, Wonchol & Shin, Seung-Hoon. “Korean Learners’ Perception and Production Patterns of English laterals in a complex onset and ambisyllabic position.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 279-301. Perception and production of a segment in a foreign or second language has been one of the major issues in the fields of phonetics and phonology. Traditional analyses made so far, however, have exclusively focused on either perception or on production solely and seldom on the relationship between the two. Also, those studies have heavily dealt with individual segments in isolation, hardly touching on those appearing in an environment that a mother tongue does not allow. The aim of this paper is to explore patterns of lateral perception and production by Korean learners of English and to elucidate the relationship between perception and production in the process of lateral acquisition. To this end, we employed 1,320 production and 600 perception data from 30 Korean learners of English and three native speakers of English. The production data were divided into eight types depending on their phonological, phonetic, morphological and even spelling properties, and perception data by three different syllable structures. Based on the results, this research contends that the well-known factors such as proficiency and phonological/morphological environment play an important role in producing and perceiving English laterals. It also reveals the relationships between perception and production when Koreans learn English laterals in various environments and maintains that wrong production stems from wrong perception. Cho, Eun Hyung. “The Effect of English Task Activity using Learner’s Mother Tongue on English Language Learning Strategies.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 39.4 (2013): 303-323. This study was to implement English Task Activity using Learner’s mother tongue and was characterized by Bilingualism-based Approach of Choi(2007) and by Task-based Teaching of Willis(1996). The English Task Activity developed for this study was applied to English language learners in an attempt to improve their English Language Learning Strategies. The pre/post surveys using Oxford(1989)'s SILL(Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) were conducted to explore the effect of the English Task Activity on English Language Learning Strategies. The data collected from the surveys were analyzed by WIN. SPSS 20.0 program and examined by paired t-test. The results from the surveys of this study show that there was a significant increase in 5 English Language Learning Strategies such as Memory Strategies, Cognitive Strategies, Meta Cognitive Strategies, Affective Strategies and Social Strategies. The increase in use of these strategies is therefore meaningful in that the English Task Activity using Learner's mother tongue-based on Bilingualism-based Approach- is efficient for English language learners.
