The cultural style of Eastern Indian temples has held the position of accomplishment space and religious space by forming a Buddhist nunnery with a sarira stupa as the center. The style of the Buddhist temple in the Gandhara region (where there is an Image Hall enshrining Buddhist statues) was introduced into China and then into Korea. Three Pagodas and three Image Halls or single Pagodas and single Image Hall styles were the mainstream of temples in the period of the Three States. Then they changed to two Pagodas and two image Halls in the Unified Silla. At that time, the living space of Buddhist monks was separate from work space. There is a corridor between the ritual space of a temple and the main building of a temple. The style was not against the rule in Goryeo Dynasty. However, ritual space was connected to a temple by a corridor. The layout of space became similar to that of the modern traditional style temples because the corridor disappeared. Living space for the Buddhist monks is now similar to the living space found during the Joseon Dynasty. The organization of space in the temple is a symbol of Sumeru mountain based on the Buddhist vision of the universe. The importance of the mountain was emphasized by the veneration of Confucianism. As Buddhism was suppressed temples in the flatland disappeared. The remaining temples were in mountain areas in the Joseon Dynasty. The traditional temples that are open now were built with the organization of space used in the late Joseon Dynasty. There an entry door connected to Il-joo-mun (一柱門), Cheon-wang-mun (天王門) and Bul-i-mun (不二門). You can see the Court Concentric Type of ‘ㅁ’ and a stately mansion if you look through the door. Arranged around the mansion are shrines to Buddhist saints or mountain spirits. However, many temples are being built in the city as civilization and society develops. Traditional temples located in mountain areas built very wide. However, temples in the cities are built very long because of the land prices. So, city temples seek convenience for modern people as well as maintaining religious symbolism. These temples build a modern mansion on top of the temple. The newly built mountainous district temples are built in traditional style. City temples are now developing with more width. In other words, Korean temple construction has the aspects of continuance and transformation at the same time.

The Seonamsa Temple underwent many changes during the wars of the Joseon Dynasty as well as a major fire; however, much of its Buddhist heritage remains as it went through a reconstruction. This study focuses on Buddhist craftworks at the Seonamsa Temple and discusses the current status and characteristics of Buddhist craftworks used for various purposes at the temple. Buddhist craftworks in the Seonamsa Temple’s collection are mostly made of wood and metal, housing a total of 137 items and 258 pieces. Many craftworks have been created and passed down. One of the most noticeable aspects of Buddhist metalwork produced in Joseon temples is the change in materials. Brassware, which was an expensive metal until the Goryeo Dynasty, went into use for various craftworks in the late Joseon Dynasty. This is because craftsmen who had been making brassware products during the Joseon Dynasty began making them for the common people, which revitalized the production and consumption of brassware. This social atmosphere also influenced the production of craftworks in temples. The tea bowls, candlesticks, incense burners, and canisters used in temples at the time were made of brass. The Seonamsa Temple also has a large collection of Buddhist craftworks made of brass. Buddhist craftworks had a distinct purpose and were made for specific use as religious objects. This study categorized the crafts into ceremonial, ritual, and offering tools, and analyzed the main craftworks produced for each purpose. These craftworks have the characteristics of inheriting traditional elements while attempting to transform their forms, thus establishing the style of Buddhist craftworks in the late Joseon Dynasty. As a representative temple for systematically holding various Buddhist rituals, the Seonamsa Temple holds records from the Joseon Dynasty related to rituals. However, there are many Buddhist craftworks in the temple that are related to Buddhist rituals. Therefore, it is assumed that Buddhist rituals were constantly practiced at the Seonamsa Temple. Thus, this study examined the continuity of Buddhist rituals at the Seonamsa Temple by comparing Buddhist craftworks and paintings. Although one Buddhist temple bell was stolen, the Seonamsa Temple still has four Buddhist bells, making it a treasure trove of late Joseon bells. These Buddhist bells were created between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries by the active master bell makers Kim Yong-am, Kim Sung-won, Yoon Chwi-eun, and Kwon Joong-sam, and represent the characteristics of late Joseon bells. This study examined the activities of the master bell makers who produced each bell. Through this, the study analyzed and compared them by categorizing the detailed expressions of the bells in the Seonamsa Temple's collection into yongnew, sanskrit, yeongwak, yeonroe, and image of bodhisattva. The Buddhist bells in the Seonamsa Temple collection attempted to express new patterns while inheriting the features of the previous period’s bells, which can be seen through the use of jeonpae patterns.

Anti-communism system which was formed and built through the Yosun incident is still now lingering like a ghost even after the cold war system came to an end years ago and is working as strong mechanism that controls and disciplines Korean society. Therefore, studying the Yosun incident is very significant to understand Korean society. This article aims at presenting future prospect with looking into research status and issues of the Yosun incident, centering on papers published by historians so far. Only four to five articles focused on, ‘Yousun incident’, were published in the academia before 2000. They were meaningful because they attempted to go beyond existing studies based on anti-communism. Since 2000, studies on the Yosun incident not only increased in quantity, but also approached a variety of subjects. That is to say, studies analyzing nature of Syngman Rhee’s regime or state violence, studies on building anti-communism system and establishing anti-communism state, studies on leadership or participants of the incident and studies on real situation of impacted local people or suffering and damage through the incident were carried out. Also studies on partisan activities and mopping-up operation against partisans were published. Then research was expanded to conversion policy of Syngman Rhee’s regime or mass mobilization system for anti-communism subject. However, there is still much to be studied in the future. The Yosun incident was the event of much significance in which social movement during the colonial period, organic relationship between social movement force and local people, conflict between left and right wing force after Korean liberation, local people’s recognition around left and right wing force, regional infiltration of the state power and national question and class issue were combined, condensed and revealed. We have to broaden research area of this significant event. Regional characteristics and nature of the Yosun incident will be revealed more clearly through these studies.

Yongheungsa Temple, located in Damyang, Jeollanam-do, was closed during the Korean War but has recently undergone restoration. The temple boasts a rich collection of cultural assets and artifacts dating back to the Joseon Dynasty, offering a window into the past. The History of Yongheungsa Temple, written in 1724, further accentuates its historical importance. Among the artifacts from the Joseon Dynasty, some notable ones include a 1583 painting of the Bodhisattva of Cheonjang housed in Anguksa Temple in Fukuyama, Japan, and a 1645 bronze bell housed in the Daeungjeon Hall of Yongheungsa Temple. Additionally, there is a 1660 wooden Amitabha Buddha statue of Hoejeokam Grotto (currently enshrined at Hoguksa Temple in Damyang) and a 1755 wooden Buddha statue of Sangseonam Grotto (currently enshrined at Hoeamsa Temple in Yangju). At Yongheungsa Temple, various Buddhist texts are preserved, including the Surangama Sutra (1692), the Preface to Collection of Various Writings on the Chan Source (1694), and a Buddhist ritual book called Unsudan Kasa (1694). Cheongshim Ssangin, who rebuilt Yongheungsa Temple in the 1630s, was a monk inheriting the dharma of the Soyo group within the Cheongheo School, thus establishing Yongheungsa Temple as a Soryo group temple. There are conflicting records regarding the Royal Prayer Hall of the Yuksanggung Shrine installed at Yongheungsa Temple in the mid-18th century, with accounts differing between Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon and Yongheungsa Temple in Damyang. However, upon a thorough examination of various documents, it was concluded that the Royal Prayer Hall was not relocated from Songgwangsa Temple in the 19th century but was actually installed by royal decree around 1743. In the modern era, Yongheungsa Temple became a battleground, serving as a refuge for the Donghak Peasant Army and the Righteous Army. Despite facing challenges, the temple persevered and carried on with its religious activities until the Japanese occupation. The Buddha statue housed in the Daeungjeon Hall during this period was identified as the Five Buddhas of the Seven Buddhas from the past. Records of the monks who served as head monks can be found in the gazette of the Japanese Government- General of Korea.

The creation of the Tripitaka Koreana during the early Goryeo dynasty had a national purpose and symbolic significance: to overcome a national crisis through the unity of the ruler and the people in repelling the Khitan invasion. The Tripitaka Koreana was enshrined in major temples across the country, serving as a tool for prayers for national peace and prosperity while also symbolizing the authority and grandeur of the royal family. In the late Goryeo period, the Tripitaka Koreana that had been lost due to the Mongol invasion was recreated. The printing blocks of the re-established temples were enshrined in major temples under state management. During this time, the spread of faith in the Tripitaka Koreana led to its enshrinement at the request of both individuals and temples. In the early Joseon period, the Tripitaka Koreana was enshrined under the leadership of Taejo and Sejo. This effort served to strengthen royal authority while also being used to pray for the well-being of the royal family and the prosperity of the nation. In 1865 during the late Joseon Dynasty and, in 1899, during the Korean Empire, the printing of the Tripitaka Koreana resumed, spurred by the revival of Buddhism and national support. During the Japanese colonial period, the printing of the Tripitaka Koreana was used for political purposes by the Japanese, notably in 1915 and 1937. In modern times, large-scale enshrinement of the Tripitaka Koreana took place in 1968 to support Buddhist research and promote national culture. The Tripitaka Koreana scriptures were developed in various ways, reflecting the political, cultural, and religious meanings of each era.

Under the topic of reviewing changes to the Buddhist building arrangement and major buildings of the Seonam Buddhist Temple in Suncheon, this study confirmed the four following findings: First, based on the estimation that its twin pagodas were built in the second half of the ninth century, the Seonam Buddhist Temple was founded under the guidance of Doseon Guksa. In Doseon Guksa’s arrangement, the inner gate, twin pagodas, Geumdang, and an assembly hall formed an axis with corridors surrounding them in the structure. Second, although it is difficult to estimate the Buddhist buildings of the temple from Goryeo, Daegakguksajungchanggeondo makes it possible to examine them from early Joseon to Jeongyujaeran. As for the arrangement of the Buddhist buildings, the two-story sanctuary and twin pagodas in the central yard formed the center along the main north-south axis. After passing through several gates from the one-pillar gate before the Buddhist buildings, one can see rows of many major buildings in the central yard in all four directions. Third, Jeongyujaeran broke out in the 30th year of King Seonjo’s reign, and it caused a huge damage to the Buddhist buildings of the Seonam Buddhist Temple in the second half of Joseon dynasty. Restoration began in 1644 with the rebuilding of Daegagam, and in 1649 Jijangjeon and Gobeopdang, respectively. Later records show that in the 18th century the Buddhist temple had thirteen major buildings, nine temple dormitories, and twelve small temples. The Seonam Buddhist Temple maintained its Buddhist buildings including the approximately 30 major buildings until 1935 under the Japanese rule. Finally, a review of various recorded documents suggests that the Seonam Buddhist Temple maintained 70 major buildings in Daegakguksajungchangdogeongi, 65 in early Joseon, 51 in 1707, 34 in 1719, 31 in 1780, 37 in 1860, and 33 in 1935. That is, the Seonam Buddhist Temple maintained 30~40 major buildings during the second half of Joseon dynasty.

This article examines how the description of the Yeosu·Suncheon incident (Yeo·Sun incident) had been changed in both government-produced and government-licensed high school textbooks. The Yeo·Sun incident was initiated when the 14th regiment, which was stationed in Yeosu, disobeyed the counterinsurgency command to be deployed to Jeju-do to put an end to the Third of April incident, otherwise known as the Jeju Massacre, and rose in revolt. In the quelling of this revolt, massacres of civilians were carried out, resulting in over 10 thousand deaths in the eastern Jeonnam area. But previously, the Korean government emphasized only the rebellious aspect of the Yeo·Sun incident, and applied this perspective when making Korean history textbooks. This article tries to understand how the perception of Korea—from the government’s perspective—has changed by looking at the changes in descriptions of the Yeo·Sun incident in Korean history textbooks. For this, Korean history textbooks are divided into three periods. The first is the second curriculum period, in which different publishers were first able to produce their own Korean history textbooks. The descriptions were different depending on the publishers, but all were examined by the government in order to be officially approved. In this second curriculum period, the Yeo·Sun incident first appeared, but only in half of the textbooks, and all were described from anti-communist stance; for instance, the textbooks claimed that North Korea dispatched communists to South Korea in order to communize it, and the Yeo·Sun incident occurred as part of this. The second is from the third to fifth curriculum periods, in which Korean history textbooks were unified into one government-designated textbook when more anti-communist positions started to be advocated by the military dictatorship. The third is from the sixth to seventh curriculum periods, in which only one type of governmental textbook continued to be available. But a momentous change was made in the description of the Yeo·Sun incident in that the description was changed from revolt to incident. This perception change was indebted to the efforts of local people and the accumulation of academic research.

In China, after the acceptance of Tibetan esoteric Buddhism, also known as Lamaism, during the Yuan Dynasty, the production of distinctive Buddhist sculptures with unique Tibetan-style art began. In Korea, Tibetan-style Buddhist statues emerged during the Late Goryeo Dynasty, originating from Buddhist activities supported by either the royal court or pro-Yuan factions. Traditionally, scholars classify these statues as Late Goryeo creations influenced by the Yuan Dynasty, closely associated with the spread of Lamaism. However, a closer examination of Chinese Buddhist statue production reveals that this trend persisted beyond the Yuan Dynasty, extending into the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Particularly during the Ming Dynasty, such Tibetan-style Buddhist statues were consistently crafted and featured prominently in imperial collections. Consequently, some scholars propose the notion that the Tibetan-style Gilt-bronze Buddhist statues in Korea may actually date back to the Early Joseon Dynasty, influenced by Ming Dynasty Buddhist sculpture. Aligned with this scholarly perspective, this article aims to scrutinize the style of the Gilt-Bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva at Seonamsa Temple and juxtapose it with the attributes of Tibetan-style Buddha statues from the Yuan and Ming dynasties in China, in order to reassess its probable production date. In 1988, during the renovation of the Thousand Buddha Hall at Seonamsa Temple, a Gilt-Bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was discovered hidden in the upper rafters. Initially examined in 1992, it was naturally dated as a Tibetan-style bodhisattva from the Yuan Dynasty due to its distinctive features such as the jeweled crown, facial expression, intricate ornaments, and throne design. It was assumed that the statue must have been crafted in response to cultural exchanges with the Yuan Dynasty during the Late Goryeo Dynasty. However, when comparing the style of the Seonamsa Bodhisattva statue with the Tibetan-influenced styles from China’s Yuan and Ming dynasties, it not only reflects the characteristics of Ming dynasty Yongle and Xuande period statues but also combines traditional elements with features of the Tibetan style from the Yuan dynasty. This indicates that the Tibetan Buddhist art style, adopted during the Late Goryeo period, continued to influence Early Joseon Buddhist art through the Ming dynasty. As a result, it is presumed that the gilt-bronze Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva statue at Seonamsa was produced in 15th-century Joseon, following the popularity of Yongle and Xuande period statues in the Ming dynasty.

Hanging Buddhist paintings (gwaebul ) displayed in outdoor ritual spaces during the late Joseon period functioned not as simple illustrations but as media that visualized the audiovisual structure of Buddhist ritual. Through the combination of auditory invocation—generated by beomeum chanting—and the visual manifestation provided by monumental imagery, the gwaebul reenacted the sensory efficacy of ritual performance. As Buddhist ritual practices expanded in the late seventeenth century to include lay participation, ritual manuals reorganized frequently performed rites, and their codified procedures increasingly shaped the iconography of ritual paintings. By the eighteenth century, gwaebul iconography shifted toward visualizing the Buddha’s descent into the ritual arena, reflecting the development of Buddhist ritual as a composite art integrating sound and image. The procedures of Geobul (the invocational elevation of the Buddha) and Bongcheong (the act of inviting the Buddha), as recorded in manuals such as the Ojong beomeumjip and the Cheonjimyeongyang suryukjae-ui beomeum sanbojip , presupposed a ritual framework centered on this descent. Accordingly, the gwaebul functioned as a visual device mediating practitioners’ sensory engagement with the ritual. This study examines two eighteenth-century gwaebul from Buan, Jeollabuk-do—the Naeso-sa (1700) and Gaeam-sa (1749) Yeongsanhoe paintings—to analyze how the audiovisual structure of late Joseon Buddhist ritual was translated into pictorial form within a specific regional ritual environment. The Naeso-sa painting is the earliest known example to visually incorporate the sequential invocation of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as prescribed in ritual manuals, while the Gaeam-sa painting intensifies the performative dimension of Geobul by compressing the Buddha’s descent and devotees’ participation into a single orchestrated scene. Together, these works demonstrate the transformation of Buddhist ritual from an auditory-centered mode of devotion into an integrated audiovisual ritual experience, illustrating how ritual sound and painted image converged to render the Buddha’s presence both heard and seen. As regionally rooted ritual practices involving Eosan monks and lay communities shaped their production and use, late Joseon gwaebul may be understood as pictorial crystallizations of the audiovisual logic of Buddhist ritual.
