The purpose of this study is to reinterpret Yeats’s later poem “A Dialogue of Self and Soul” from Nietzsche’s philosophical perspectives. First of all, I investigate how the two terms, Ego and Self, were used in the titles of the papers, theses, and dissertations on RISS and show the statistical data of their use of them. Then, I examine the differences in meaning between the two terms from the psychological aspects of Jung and Freud, and find out what thoughts Nietzsche has regarding the terms such as Self, Ego, and Soul. Finally, I reinterpret “A Dialogue of Self and Soul” based on Nietzsche’s philosophical perspectives and show the messages Yeats wants to deliver to the readers throughout this poem.

William Butler Yeats uses Celtic mythology as materials for his early poems and gives an impetus to the period of the literary Renaissance in Ireland. The Celtic mythology acts on the medium for connecting the ancient Irish territory to the present one, and enlightens the Irish on the importance of history, culture, national identity, and the independence of Ireland. The mythical figures such as King Goll, King Fergus, Cuchulain become the archetype of typical human beings for the Irish. Therefore, Yeats hoped that the ancient Celtic culture could be restored to the new literary Renaissance in Ireland and would make a new turning point in the studies of ancient history.

This paper endeavors to elucidate the portrayal of the house in the works of Yeats and Dickinson through the lens of Freud’s concept of “the uncanny.” Freud’s explication of the uncanny pertains to the psychological encounter with occurrences or entities that are not only enigmatic but also evoke a disquieting sense of dread due to their uncanny familiarity. In Yeats and Dickinson, the ostensibly familiar house emerges within disconcerting and eerie narratives, thereby inducing an inescapable psychological perturbation. This paper explores Yeats’s utilization of the house in Purgatory as a symbol to encapsulate the prevailing disarray, bewilderment, and despondency intrinsic to the old man. Similarly, it delves into Dickinson’s presentation of the house as a confining locus wherein conventional female roles are imposed and stifled. In her poems, concealing and suppressing one’s past through the medium of the house leads her to encounter another divided self, another unfamiliar me. The uncanny house in Yeats and Dickinson metamorphoses into a realm where fractured selfhood is besieged by an overwhelming sense of terror, consequently blurring the demarcations of consciousness.

Why is Yeats still interesting to many readers and scholars as well? Why do people find Yeats and Lee Ufan and Cy Twombly fascinating?—Yeats is a poet of the Modernist period, and Lee Ufan and Cy Twombly the artists of the Post-Modernist period. I want to find out the origins of the interest and fascination with their work. Also, I look to Derrida whose Deconstruction—his thinking and reading the text—could help me better read works, for instance, by Cy Twombly and Lee Ufan, two postmodernist artists, and some of Yeats’s works, because their works are works of Deconstruction or Deconstruction aesthetics, without their understanding of it. I would also like to point to the misreading of Deconstruction by some critics of importance whose influence on later scholars seems too bad and too strong, which I hope will be rectified sooner or later.

This paper asserts that alienation in Katherine Mansfield’s Miss Brill and Alice Munro’s Floating Bridge represents both an emotional rupture and a catalyst for transformation. By examining Miss Brill, an elderly woman who derives fleeting solace from her imagined companions, alongside Jimmy, a man grappling with marital and existential challenges, this study explores how emotional isolation evolves into a yearning for authenticity and healing. In Miss Brill, the protagonist’s delight in observing life is shattered by overheard ridicule, leading to a profound confrontation with her solitude. Similarly, Jimmy’s ambiguous encounter with a stranger in Floating Bridge results in a moment of emotional clarity that alters his self-perception. These pivotal narrative moments illustrate how alienation, despite its painful nature, can become a pathway to self-awareness and latent hope. The paper contextualizes these internal journeys within broader social and cultural frameworks, highlighting how factors such as gender, age, and societal perspectives contribute to each individual’s emotional estrangement. Ultimately, this analysis reveals that alienation in the works of Mansfield and Munro is not merely a source of suffering but a peculiar force that can initiate a journey toward deeper emotional understanding and the quest for more genuine human connections.

This paper examines the status of the body in W. B. Yeats’s late poetry through the lens of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy of the body, with particular attention to the concepts of the “Great Reason” and the “Small Reason” articulated in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. As T. S. Eliot observes, Yeats continues a process of self-renewal even in old age, reconstructing the aging body not as a mere limitation but as a dynamic force that enables new modes of thought and creation. In Yeats’s late poetry, the body functions not as a symbol of biological decline but as a source of imagination and artistic insight, a conception that resonates closely with Nietzsche’s critique of traditional metaphysical dualism and his emphasis on the body as the center of thinking and value creation. Focusing on “A Dialogue of Self and Soul,” “The Tower,” and “Crazy Jane Talks to the Bishop,” this paper analyzes the process through which the Self incorporates the Soul and expands from “I” to “We,” the ways in which the aging body stimulates imaginative play and creative activity, and the manner in which the relationship between body and mind is reconfigured beyond opposition into one of mutual dependence. Through this analysis, the paper demonstrates that while Yeats appropriates Nietzsche’s ideas, he transforms the body–mind relation from a structure of hierarchical incorporation into one of reciprocal harmony. By repositioning the aging body as a fundamental force that continually renews creative thought, this study proposes a new interpretive framework for understanding Yeats’s late poetry.

This essay is a comparison between Celtic myth and Korean myth with emphasis on hero Cuchulain and Jumong. Cuchulain is a Celtic Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle. In this study the main text of Cuchulain is Lady Gregory's Cuchulain of Muirthemne. Jumong, whose birth name was Dongmyeongseongwang(東明聖王), was the founding monarch of Goguryeo. The best known version of the founding myths of Goguryeo is the Dongmyeongwangpyeon of the Dongguk I Sanggukgip(Collected Works of Minister Yi of Korea) by Yi, Gyu Bo. According to Jeseph Campbell's idea of monomyth the standard path of the mythological adventure of the hero is a magnification of the formula represented in the rites of passage: separation−initiation−return. A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder, fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won, and the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. Cuchulain and Jumong's hero-journey show the nuclear unit of the monomyth. Their stories exhibit with extraordinary clarity all the essential elements of the classic accomplishment of the impossible task. Cuchulain is the son of the sun god Lugh and Deichtire(a daughter of Maga, the child of the love god of Angus). Jumong is the son of Hae Mosu(解慕漱: the son of heaven) and Yuhwa(柳花:daughter of the river god Habaek(河伯). Cuchulain and Jumong are the child divine yet born of human mather. They are sons of sun and abandoned by their divine father. The characteristic adventure of Cuchulain is winning of the bride, Emma. The adventure of Jumong is going to succeed to his father-the father is the invisible founder of Buyeo. Cuchulain's adventure had given him the capacity to annihilate all opposition. At the age of seventeen Cuchulain single-handedly defends Ulster from the army of Connacht in the Tain Bo Cuailnge. Jumong's adventure had given him the capacity to rule his subjects. At the age of twenty-two, in 37 BC, Jumong established Goguryeo, and became its first "Supreme King." Goguryeo considered itself a successor to Buyeo. Cuchulain, the Irish Achilles, is the symbol of all those who fought for independence of Ireland. Jumong, the korean Achilles, is the symbol of the pride of Korean. The aim of this essay is that my comparative analysis contribute to the sense of universal understanding of the human condition.

This paper explores the interplay of simulacra, cyberspace, and hyperreality in William Gibson’s Neuromancer, placing the novel as a seminal text that encapsulates the postmodern condition. Holding on the theoretical point of view of Jean Baudrillard, Jean-François Lyotard, and Fredric Jameson, the study examines how Gibson constructs a fictional universe where reality is indistinguishable from simulation. The cyberspace matrix in Neuromancer functions not merely as a narrative setting but as a symbolic domain where signs precede and replace the real, illustrating Baudrillard’s concept of the hyperreal. The protagonist Case’s incorporeal navigation through virtual networks reflects a crisis of identity, highlighting the sinking stable selfhood in the technologically advanced environments. This paper argues that the novel captures the sensory and psychological ambiance of postmodernity—characterized by data saturation, media convergence, and the collapse of grand narratives—offering an analytical lens through which we understand contemporary digital culture. Through close textual analysis, the research underscores the novel’s contribution to cyberpunk aesthetics and its relevance to ongoing discourses in media theory, postmodern philosophy, and technocultural studies.

Evolving human enhancement trajectories through transhumanism and posthuman theory throws insight on important paradigms which include genetic engineering, nanotechnology, artificial general intelligence, mind uploading, cryonics, and the technological singularity. Transhumanism is a critical inquiry that questions ontology that was once anthropocentric, but with the imagination of a future infused with technology. Theoretical perspectives of Rosi Braidotti, N. Katherine Hayles, and Kevin Kelly involve the speculative futures in which the identity is subjected to a transgression past the biological limit and incorporates code and machine, as well as a synthetic environments. In-depth analysis of Ramez Naam, Nexus, Natasha Vita-More, and Vernor Vinge, the singularity essay can create a profile of ethical, philosophical, and existential threats presented by these technologies. The emphasis is placed on the interactions between pharmaceuticals and digital technologies, the ambiguities about anti-aging bioethics, and the stabilization of personal identity in the post-biological transitions. Although these emerging technologies hold the promise of freedom from mortality and biological limits, they necessitate a stern reconsideration of human existence. The networked complexities of desire, innovation, and risk imply that transhuman futures discursively challenge simplistic binaries; the enduring demands of ethical deliberation.

This paper analyzes the conflict and tragedy between two brothers, set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War, which arose from the political strife surrounding Ireland’s independence and the Revolutionary War in the early 1920s. Teddy supports the Free State, which aims to preserve religious and middle-class privileges, while Damien advocates for the complete unification and independence of the Republic, envisioning an ideal world for workers. The analysis is conducted from a socialist perspective. In The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Ken Loach creates the film by skillfully and intentional distorting historical facts, allowing the audience to grasp the underlying truths. Loach asserts that understanding the deeper meaning of history is more important than adhering strictly to historical accuracy.
