W.B. Yeats’s process of finding eternal symbols in reality and mythologizing them, acknowledging that Celtic myths and folklore alone no longer resonate with the Irish people. This realization emerges through conflicts with the Irish populace, such as the controversy surrounding “The Playboy of the Western World,” the “Lane controversy,” and middle-class materialism. A pivotal moment occurs during the Easter Rising in 1916, marking Yeats’s shift from relying solely on Celtic myths and folklore to constructing Irish symbols within reality. In the aftermath of the Easter Rising, Yeats maintains his aspiration for Ireland’s independence, refusing to lose hope amidst dark times during the Irish Civil War. In independent Ireland, Yeats seeks to overcome his disillusionment with practical politics by embarking on a symbolic journey to the mythical city of Byzantium. In his old age, as he faces mortality, Yeats recognizes the diminishing utility of the myths he constructed. Yet, he paradoxically mythologizes his entire life and work by attributing symbolic significance to discarded and seemingly useless things.

예이츠가 아일랜드 민중과 겪었던 갈등—􋺷서방세계의 난봉꾼􋺸(The Playboy of the Western World) 공연 사태, ‘휴 레인 논쟁’(Hugh Lane controversy), 중산층의 물질주의 등—을 통해 켈트 신화와 민담만으로는 더 이상 아일랜드인의 공 감을 얻지 못한다는 것을 깨닫고 현실 속에서 상징을 찾아내 구축하는 결정적인 계기 는 1916년 부활절봉기이다. 부활절봉기 이후 예이츠는 내전기 동안의 폭력적인 어두 운 현실에서도 희망을 잃지 않고 아일랜드의 독립을 희망한다. 그리고 독립한 아일랜 드에서 예이츠는 현실 정치에 대한 환멸을 신화의 도시인 비잔티움으로의 여정이라는 상징을 통해 극복하려 한다. 늙고 죽음을 목전에 둔 시기에 예이츠는 자신이 구축한 신화가 더 이상 유용하지 않음을 깨닫지만 버려지고 쓸모없는 것들에 상징적인 의미 를 부여함으로써 역설적으로 작품과 인생 전체를 신화화한다.
