One of the important missions of a corporation these days is to generate more innovative and successful research themes. Defense industries have invested their competencies heavily in generating their research themes to develop their own core technologies and new products led by their innovative trigger. This thesis presents a new process for extracting technology and market opportunities by analyzing external environment and internal conditions and generating highly successful research themes. Major accomplishment of this thesis is that the theme extraction model is designed to extract technology and market opportunities on a multi-dimensional space. Especially, it is a dynamic model that extracts technological opportunities by analyzing the variation pattern of technology development structure and by considering the quality of R&D outputs.

일상적인 상황에서 방위산업에 관련된 물류관리의 중요성은 일반 산업에 비하여 크지 않으나, 예외적인 상황이 발생했을 때에는 신속한 해결책을 찾아내어 문제를 해결하지 않으면 국방에 있어서 전략적 공백으로 이어질 수 있다. 그러므로 예외상황에 대한 신속한 대비책을 구축하는 것이 필요하며 본 논문에서는 업무절차관리(BPMS) 시스템을 도입하여 물류 프로세스의 지속적인 개혁 및 개선을 유도한다. 이를 위하여 프로세스 저장소의 사용을 제안하며, 예외발생시 신속한 처리방안을 검색하기 위한 검색트리의 사용방법론을 제시한다. 획일적인 업무처리가 강조되는 군사작전 및 방위산업의 환경 하에서 예외상황의 처리를 위한 효율적 장치를 마련하는 것은 방산운용의 측면에서 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 특히 지식경영의 관점에서 예외처리 시 생성되는 새로운 프로세스 지식을 프로세스 저장소(process repository)에 저장하고, 예외발생시 이 문제의 해결에 적합한 프로세스를 저장소에서 신속하게 검색하는 데 활용할 수 있는 검색트리의 생성과 활용에 대한 방법론을 연구하였다. 검색트리의 생성과 활용을 위하여 ‘상황변수’와 ‘의사결정변수’의 개념을 새로 도입함으로써 문제의 상황을 체계적으로 기술하고 저장 및 검색하는 방편을 제시하였으며, 예외상황의 인식능력(context awareness)을 제고시켰다. 정보의 엔트로피를 기초로 한 C5.0 알고리즘을 적용하여 정보이득을 최대화하는 검색트리를 생성하는 방법을 제시하였다.

Defense market is characterized by its bilateral monopoly market in supply and demand. In this market, manufacturer's interest would be different from that of MND(Ministry of National Defense). Previous studies show that defense firms can increase total benefit by increasing direct labour costs. Also, it is possible to substitute direct labour costs with direct material costs by shifting the cost of the non-defense part to the defense part. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to apply learning curve in calculating labour hour. This study analyzes previous literatures and develops a modified version of extended Technology Acceptance Model to show the relationship of various factors that affect the learning curve adoption. Factor analysis and regression analysis are used to verify the hypotheses. The results of the questionnaire show that only 51.4% of defense firms are implementing learning curve. Since a large portion of the non-responding group are small defense firms that do not adopt learning curve presently, the percentage of firms that implement learning curve is much less than 51.4%. This research shows that the willingness of top management is most important in implementing learning curve in defense industry.

The goal of this study is to investigate how to become a competitive military ship building company in this rapidly changing business environment. Five military ship building companies participated in this survey. The survey was designed to collect information regarding business environment, strategy patterns, and business outcomes. This study was intended to analyze how the business environment and strategy are related to business outcomes. For analysis of the survey data, we used structural equation modeling since we can extract factors, analyse mutual relations, and perform significant examinations using this model.. The findings of the study are as the following: the factors that sensitively affect the business outcomes include change of purchase conditions, complexity in material cost management, low demand, and good communication among employees. The analytical strategy, among other business strategies, turned out to have more sensitive impact upon business outcomes.

In this paper, we propose a FACET-based feature point extraction method and an image registration method for image fusion based on multi-sensors. The most important part of image registration in image fusion is the extraction of feature points in IR and VIS images. The proposed method of extracting feature points uses the FACET-based filter in an IR image and uses Harris corner detector in a VIS image because it is difficult to find common characteristics and correlations in the IR and VIS images. The proposed method of image registration consists of 5 stages: 1) extraction of the feature points, 2) detection of correspondence points by using mutual information (MI), 3) a 2D projective transformation, 4) interpolation to integers of a pixel coordination, 5) a similar measurement by using normalized mutual information (NMI). The final outcome of the fusion image expresses a pseudo color based on hue (H), saturation (S), and intensity (I). Experimental results showed that the proposed method provides robust and accurate registration results. The expression of a pseudo color image after image fusion showed methods for enhanced target detection.

This paper presents the flutter analysis results of CANARD and tail fin assembly for the C-Project (a system development project lead by Hanwha Co.). The CANARD includes an actuator and actuator backup structure. The Roll Free Fin (RFF) assembly includes a hub and fins modeled by MSC PATRAN with FEM. The stiffness of CANARD was corrected as the consequence of the static stiffness load test of the actuator group. Flutter speeds were calculated with a V-g plot. Using the flutter speeds calculated for several altitudes (density) and flight conditions (Mach number), the flutter boundary curves for CANARD and RFF assembly were easily drawn with Excel spreadsheets. It was possible to draw the analytical flutter characteristics of CANARD and RFF of project guided missile with the calculated results. The flutter margins of CANARD and RFF were high enough. However, the flutter margins of RFF showed zero frequency flutter at low speed. It is most likely that this phenomenon is caused by the roll free fin assembly, but not because of the flutter or divergence.

Using a high efficiency Laser Diode causes problems such as elliptical beam and Astigmatism. This experiment involves design and analysis on how to minimize beam divergence and how to resolve the problem that occurs on duplex optical receiver for near field measurement. In order to make it available for military-use, we performed an experiment with optimized design using optical component that minimized the performance alteration in multiple conditions such as temperature, impact and vibration. In addition, we secured a technology to apply this on buildings, spatial geodesy, and targeting for military use. At the same time, we have also secured a technical base for practical application of next stage technical development such as three dimensional spatial geodesy equipment.

This study is a theoretical analysis about the effectiveness of maintenance cost reduction which can be attained by deploying maintenance analysis according to CBM(Condition Based Maintenance) as it is gradually proved to be efficient in TBM(Time Based Maintenance). The benefits of applying CBM are manifold, e.g., Maintenance Cost Reduction, ability to analyze the cause of failure, enhanced availability of equipment, reduction in planned maintenance, reduced personnel for maintenance checking and reduction in additional cost caused by Breakdown. In this study, we focus on the analysis of Maintenance Cost since it takes the major part in cost reduction activity. Current maintenance practices of the Korean weapon system have been analyzed. And a case study has been performed to analyze the impact of maintenance cost reduction when CBM was deployed and customized to fit the Korean weapon system environment. This paper also analyzes the connected effect of CBM with Performance Based Logistics (PBL) and also with Contractor Logistics Support (CLS) which is planned to be adopted by the Korean Military Force.

Recently, increasing participants such as commercial, universities and laboratories are highly motivated to achieve effective transition to defense technology for weapon systems acquisition. Generally it is difficult to develop technologies of 'high-risk and high-return'. Therefore, some ministries have adopted the honorable failure policy to motivate R&D programs. In defense research and development environments, the potential risks and uncertainties of defense science and technology projects are above common level due to the system`s complexities, system integrations. In this paper, the application scheme of 'honorable failure system' is provided as solution to support defense research and development programs via general review and analysis of the present research and development environment. The need and scheme to develop the lessons learned development process is also provided to reduce and to manage the risks during the defense research and development life cycle. And the expansion of lessons learned through information system such as defense technology information system(DTiMS) is suggested to make effective use of the lessons learned from failures.

A mortar has been widely used in infantry units because of its simple structure, operational procedure, maintenance, high elevation angles, and firing rates. A large caliber mortar system is mandatory in modern battlefield to improve the survivability of crew and for a deep-strike capability. On this ground, owing to those reasons, a large number of countries have been employing mortar system. In parallel with the advances in technology, the capability of a self-propelled mortar also has been enhanced in many areas. For example, it provides field mobility, extends the range, enhances performance of projectiles, and increases the first-shot kill rates with guided projectiles. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a large caliber, self-propelled mortar system for the future battlefield. In addition, the firing control systems of mortar and artillery have been digitalized along with the advance of information technology. In this paper, we investigated the recent global trend of 120mm mortar ammunition and introduced its development status of a localized version.
