This study analyzes how the combination of everyday artifacts and oral narratives reconstructs museum-based knowledge and interpretive authority regarding objects, focusing on the exhibition of local residents’ oral histories at the Hakseon-ri Village Museum in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. The oral accounts from Hakseon-ri exhibited the character of life-history narratives, selectively evoking individual life experiences through everyday artifacts, grounded in long-standing bonds of trust within the village. Specific connections regarding the creation, use, preservation, and donation of these artifacts have been identified, demonstrating a strong correspondence between the narrators and the objects. The artifacts were ultimately transformed from anonymous items representing a general category of objects into ‘relational objects’ that bear witness to specific residents' family ties, labor, emotions, and memories. Furthermore, oral narratives brought objects and living environments—which had otherwise been lost, discarded, or left uncollected—into the exhibition’s interpretive scope, thereby constituting what this study refers to as an ‘absent collection.’ Meanwhile, the voices of residents were reconstructed into a form of exhibition-based expression through filming, editing, and subtitling, and were connected to the exhibited objects through QR-mediated digital videos. Consequently, interpretive authority was not merely transferred from the curator to the resident; rather, it was dispersed and reconfigured across residents’ experiential authority, the mediating authority of organizers and editors, digital technology, and visitor choices. This study reveals that oral history exhibitions do more than simply add residents' voices to existing displays; they expand the scope of museum collections and shift the unit of knowledge regarding objects from mere ‘types of objects’ to the ‘relationships between objects and people.’

This study examines how the composition, institutions, places, and networks of the Suwon Huaqiao community have been reconfigured and sustained, focusing on the Suwon Chinese International Primary School and the Suwon Chinese Church. Drawing primarily on long-term fieldwork conducted from 2012 to 2024 and oral history interviews with elderly Huaqiao residents, school administrators, teachers, parents, church members, and Huaqiao youth, the study also examines documentary sources, church bulletins, and photographs. In the early Suwon Huaqiao community, the school provided education for Huaqiao children and facilitated the transmission of language and culture, while the church served as a center for religious life, social interaction, and mutual support. The overlapping participation of the same members in the school, association, and church helped maintain community cohesion. These interpersonal and organizational ties, however, weakened as living conditions changed due to the decline of the Huaqiao population, onward migration, naturalization, international marriage, and generational change. As students from diverse national and family backgrounds enrolled in the Suwon Chinese International Primary School, the composition of students and parents changed, broadening the basis for the school’s continued operation. At the Suwon Chinese Church, the decline of the established Huaqiao congregation was followed by the participation of Chinese-speaking migrants, including students and workers from mainland China, transforming the church into a space where new relationships were formed through worship and care. These changes demonstrate that the Suwon Huaqiao community has been sustained not through the simple reproduction of its existing members, but through the reconfiguration of the functions and networks of the school and church as institutions and places in response to changes in participant composition and the broader social environment. In particular, the school and church have served both as places where the historical experiences and memories of the Huaqiao community have accumulated and as spaces whose meanings and functions have been reconfigured through the participation of new Chinese-speaking migrants. From the perspective of transnational urbanism, this illustrates how people who migrated and settled in Suwon at different times have formed new relationships through their participation in existing institutions and places, and how the Suwon Huaqiao community has been reconfigured and sustained in this process.

This study examines how South Korea's Family Planning Program persisted and changed from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, a period when the government's long-standing goal of curbing population growth began to lose its rationale. Drawing on documentary sources and oral history interviews with two family planning workers who served at public health centers in Seoul, the study analyzes how the relationship between national policy and frontline practice shifted over this period. During the 1980s, the Family Planning Program operated through a combination of method-specific contraceptive targets, performance evaluation, client management, contraceptive counseling, and referral for contraceptive procedures. Family planning workers at public health centers connected residents to the program's administrative system by conducting home visits and counseling, issuing coupons, referring clients to designated hospitals, and managing performance records. Their work involved the physical burden of repeated fieldwork, the emotional labor of handling residents' resistance, and delivering contraceptive counseling, and the administrative responsibility of managing clients and performance records. Around the time of the revised population projection of 1988, population growth and fertility rates had reached the levels targeted by the government, and government-supported contraceptive services began to decline in scale. Even so, the existing system of target management and frontline work did not disappear immediately. This study interprets this persistence not as evidence of deliberate institutional preservation, but as a consequence of policy goals and frontline work systems changing at different speeds. From the mid-1990s onward, as health promotion programs expanded, family planning work gradually became peripheral to the core activities of public health centers. The interviewees' recollections are read not as direct reproductions of their perceptions at the time, but as retrospective memories through which they reassess the meaning of their past labor and of family planning policy itself, shaped by South Korea's current context of ultra-low fertility. Through this analysis, this study understands the later phase of the Family Planning Program not simply as a period of decline, but as a transitional period marked by a time lag between policy change and the reorganization of frontline work. It also illuminates, in concrete terms, the fieldwork and administrative tasks carried out by family planning workers in metropolitan public health centers.

This study is a phenomenological oral history research that illuminates the existential journey of older women who, having lived through lifetimes with “not even a primary school education,” faced the most monumental crisis of their lives–the loss of their husbands–and fell into isolated worlds haunted by auditory hallucinations of “Are you home? We should eat.” Through public elder employment, they eventually “stepped out into the wider world.” By transcribing the vivid voices of four older bereaved women participating in public elder work programs in Daejeon, South Korea, this study tracks their everyday worlds utilizing a phenomenological approach, exploring how they transformed from being mere “auxiliary actors” within the patriarchal family structure. The analysis reveals that the “290,000 KRW per month,” often dismissed in mainstream economics and social welfare studies as a mere minor income supplement for elderly poverty, actually served as a catalyst that allowed a “breath of fresh air” into the oral narrators’ suffocating lives and gave them the courage to live again. In particular, it shattered the excruciating “boredom” they endured trapped in their rooms after their bereavement, functioning as the very first independent identity card in their life course, one that filled them with the pride of having “a place to go every morning.” Furthermore, the narrators established social solidarity at the workplace by checking on each other's well-being during morning commutes. On paydays, by witnessing “money earned in my own name,” they attained economic autonomy, often withdrawing “190,000 won in crisp, new bills” to gift as pocket money to their grandchildren. Ultimately, they achieved an existential leap into “autonomous actors” by practicing alternative care by delivering lunch boxes to even more vulnerable solitary seniors and proclaiming their existence by stepping onto choir stages. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the essence of the “290,000 won elder employment stipend”, which has remained invisible to labor economics and conventional elderly welfare metrics, lies in the very process of ‘reconstituting lives,’ thereby reclaiming the fading life histories of older bereaved women and transforming personal suffering into social vitality.

With the development of artificial intelligence (AI), the use of speech-to-text (STT) and generative AI technologies for transcribing, summarizing, and analyzing oral history records has rapidly increased. While AI-based tools offer new possibilities by reducing the time and labor required for oral history research, they also create new legal and ethical issues as interviewees’ voices and statements may be transmitted to and processed by external AI service platforms. This study examines these issues from the perspectives of the Personal Information Protection Act and the Copyright Act and analyzes the terms of service and privacy policies of CLOVA Note, Daglo, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Oral history records may contain not only identifying information but also voices, life experiences, family and social relationships, sensitive information, and personal information concerning third parties. The use of external AI services may therefore raise issues concerning the provision or processing of personal information, sensitive information, and cross-border data transfers. In addition, where an interviewee’s statements possess sufficient originality, copyright issues may arise in the reproduction and transmission involved in AI-based transcription and analysis. The comparison of AI services demonstrates significant differences in their policies concerning the use of input data for service improvement and AI training, third-party processing, cross-border transfers, data retention, and user controls. Accordingly, merely informing interviewees that “AI will be used” is insufficient; the specific service and its data-processing practices must be clearly explained. In particular, consent to the terms of service between a researcher and an AI provider must be distinguished from the interviewee’s consent to the processing of their voice and statements. The former cannot substitute for the latter. Based on these findings, this study argues that the conventional broad consent to “use for research and educational purposes” is insufficient in the AI era. Oral history release forms should distinguish between public disclosure and AI-based processing and provide specific information on the purpose and scope of AI use, service providers, the possibility of use for AI training or service improvement, third-party processing, cross-border transfers, and data retention and deletion. Consent to AI-based processing should also be separately selectable, with the scope and limitations of withdrawal clearly specified. The study concludes that AI should not simply be excluded from oral history research. Rather, the new structure of rights and responsibilities arising from AI-mediated processing should be transparently communicated to interviewees and incorporated into the consent process. Oral history release forms therefore need to evolve from documents governing whether records may be disclosed into documents that also regulate the technological environments in which oral history materials are processed and utilized.
