This study examines how the composition, institutions, places, and networks of the Suwon Huaqiao community have been reconfigured and sustained, focusing on the Suwon Chinese International Primary School and the Suwon Chinese Church. Drawing primarily on long-term fieldwork conducted from 2012 to 2024 and oral history interviews with elderly Huaqiao residents, school administrators, teachers, parents, church members, and Huaqiao youth, the study also examines documentary sources, church bulletins, and photographs. In the early Suwon Huaqiao community, the school provided education for Huaqiao children and facilitated the transmission of language and culture, while the church served as a center for religious life, social interaction, and mutual support. The overlapping participation of the same members in the school, association, and church helped maintain community cohesion. These interpersonal and organizational ties, however, weakened as living conditions changed due to the decline of the Huaqiao population, onward migration, naturalization, international marriage, and generational change. As students from diverse national and family backgrounds enrolled in the Suwon Chinese International Primary School, the composition of students and parents changed, broadening the basis for the school’s continued operation. At the Suwon Chinese Church, the decline of the established Huaqiao congregation was followed by the participation of Chinese-speaking migrants, including students and workers from mainland China, transforming the church into a space where new relationships were formed through worship and care. These changes demonstrate that the Suwon Huaqiao community has been sustained not through the simple reproduction of its existing members, but through the reconfiguration of the functions and networks of the school and church as institutions and places in response to changes in participant composition and the broader social environment. In particular, the school and church have served both as places where the historical experiences and memories of the Huaqiao community have accumulated and as spaces whose meanings and functions have been reconfigured through the participation of new Chinese-speaking migrants. From the perspective of transnational urbanism, this illustrates how people who migrated and settled in Suwon at different times have formed new relationships through their participation in existing institutions and places, and how the Suwon Huaqiao community has been reconfigured and sustained in this process.
