이 연구는 역사 교사가 구성한 한국 현대사 교육과정에 따라 진행된 5·18민주화 운동 수업의 실천 사례를 분석하였다. 수업을 설계하는 과정에서 학생들이 5·18을 학 습하는데 ‘구술사 하기’가 효과적인 방안이 될 수 있을 것으로 판단하였다. 역사교육 에 적합한 구술사 하기를 위해 먼저 “학생들이 구술사를 활용하여 역사가의 작업을 경험하면서 역사교육이 추구하는 목적에 도달하는 활동”으로 구술사 하기의 개념을 규정하고 구술사 수업에서 다룰 수 있는 수업 주제와 구체적인 방안을 제시하였다. 세 유형으로 제시한 구술사 하기의 방안 중에서 본고의 연구 주제인 5·18 수업은 구 술 면담과 역사 쓰기 방안을 적용하여 3차시로 수업을 실행한 후 결과를 분석하였다. 수업 과정에서 구술자 섭외에 변수가 생겼던 점과 구술자와의 직접 면담 여부에 따라 학생들을 구분하여 학생들의 반응과 수업 산출물을 정밀하게 분석하지 못한 점 은 이 연구의 한계점이다. 하지만 수업에 참여한 중학생들은 5·18 당시 고등학생이었 던 구술자에게 정서적 동질감을 느끼면서 구술 증언에 나타난 역사적 맥락을 파악하 는 과정, 즉 역사적 감정이입을 거쳤기 때문에 5·18민주화운동을 살아있는 사건으로 인식할 수 있었다. 또한 구술을 통해 피해자의 상황과 감정에 공감하면서 비극적인 사건에 대한 경각심을 깨닫고 현재 자신의 삶과 역사를 연결하고자 하였다. 따라서 학생들에게 구술사 하기를 통한 5·18 수업 경험이 역사에서 주목받지 못했던 사람들 의 삶을 공감하고 비판적으로 이해하는 데 도움이 되었다고 평가하며 5·18 수업의 새로운 가능성을 확인하였다.

This study analyzes the practical cases of the classes on the May 18 Movement (the “May 18 Classes”) conducted according to the Korean modern history curriculum reconstructed by the teachers as the subject of curriculum realization. In the process of designing the classes, it was considered that ‘doing oral history’ could be an effective learning method for students to study the May 18 Movement. To make oral history suitable for history education, we first defined the concept of ‘doing oral history’ as “activities where students use oral history to experience the work of historians and achieve the goals pursued by history education.” We also presented class topics and specific methods that could be addressed in oral history classes. Among the three types of ‘doing oral history’ methods suggested, the May 18 Class, the subject of this study, applied oral interviews and historical writing methods. The classes were conducted over three sessions, and their results were analyzed. There are limitations to this study, such as the variables that arose in arranging interviewees and the inability to precisely analyze students’ reactions and class outcomes by distinguishing between those who conducted direct interviews with the interviewees and those who did not. However, the middle school students who participated in the classes could perceive the May 18 Movement as a living event by experiencing historical empathy through identifying emotionally with the interviewees, who were high school students during the May 18, and understanding the historical context revealed through the oral testimony. Additionally, by empathizing with the victims’ situations and emotions through oral history, the students realized the seriousness of the tragic event and sought to connect it with their own lives and history. Therefore, it is evaluated that the experience of the May 18 Classes through doing oral history helped students to deeply empathize with and critically understand the lives of those who were not highlighted in history. This study confirms the new potential of the May 18 Classes.

구술사는 역사적 사실을 보충하거나 대체하는데 중요한 근거가 된다. 또한 시간, 공간, 사건 중심의 역사 서술을 인간 중심의 그것으로 돌려놓기 위해 필요하다. 무엇 보다 구술사는 전쟁사로부터 소외된 참전자들이 상실한 자아를 되찾는데 중요한 역할 을 할 수 있다. 구술사 연구는 사회로부터 소외되고 전쟁사의 주변인이 된 참전자들이 사건의 중심에 주체로 서도록 도울 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 참전자 구술사의 사회적 기능과 가능성을 ‘소외’와 ‘소외의 극복’ 문제에 중점을 두어 설명했다. 본문에서는 ‘참전자’를 ‘소외된 사람들’과 등치시키고, 구술사의 쟁점과 포함요소를 정리했다. 제 시한 구술사 사례들은 실제 구술 채록 작업에서 일어났던 참전자의 변화와 한계를 담 았다. 참전사 구술사 연구는 참전자의 기억을 살려내고 역사의식을 재구성함으로써 억압된 상태를 해방하고 정체성 회복을 도울 수 있다. 현재 6.25전쟁 참전자 구술사 는 6.25전쟁사 담당자들이 선호하지 않는 극주변부에 있다. 소외된 참전자들을 만나 그들을 중심으로 되돌려 놓으려면, 연구자가 전쟁사 연구의 소외된 영역으로 가야하 는 역설이 있기는 하나 그것이 전쟁사 연구자의 본령이기도 하다. 특히 학도병, 전시 노무자, 비정규전 부대원, 보급병, 군악병, 여군 등 전쟁의 주변부 중에서도 더 알려지 지 않은 극주변부의 참전자들이 소외를 극복하도록 도우려면 연구자가 그들에게 다가 가 구술 채록을 하고 연구, 치유 활동을 지속하는 것 외에 다른 방법이 없다.

Oral history serves as an important basis for supplementing or replacing historical facts. Above all, oral history can play an important role in helping veterans, who were alienated from war history, regain their lost sense of self. In this paper, the social functions and possibilities of oral history of war veterans are explained by focusing on the issues of ‘alienation’ and ‘overcoming alienation.’ Oral history research on war history can liberate the oppressed state and help restore identity by reviving the memories of war veterans and reconstructing their historical consciousness. Currently, oral histories of the Korean War participants are located in the extreme periphery, where those in charge of the Korean War history do not prefer them. In particular, in order to help participants in the more unknown peripheral areas of the war, such as student soldiers, wartime workers, irregular warfare unit members, supply soldiers, military musicians, and female soldiers, overcome their alienation, researchers should approach them, record their oral histories, and conduct research and healing activities. There is no other way than to continue with such efforts.

이 연구는 1960년대 말부터 금속가공 기술자로 일해온 도시제조업 소공인의 구술을 통해, 그의 삶의 궤적과 생애사적 전략 그리고 의미를 규명하고자 한다. 구술 참여 자는 청계천 기계공구상가 일대 도심 상공업 집적지에서 8평 남짓의 시보리 공장을 운영하고 있는 금속가공 기술자이자 자영업자이다. 소공업 현장에 대한 민족지 조사를 바탕으로 진행된 구술 면담은 총 10차례 약 22시간 정도 진행되었고, 작업노트와 거래명세표등 기록물들을 수집했다. 이를 기반으로 구술 참여자의 이야기된 생애사 의 연대기를 정리·분석하여 그의 생애 서사와 행위 전략 그리고 그 의미를 파악했다. 첫째, 산업화 시기 중화학공업이 육성되면서 여러 직업훈련이 제도적으로 실행되고 있었을 때, 그는 시골에서 서울로 상경하여 비공식적인 취업과 비제도적 직업훈련을 통해 비공식적으로 금속가공 기술을 습득했고, 여러 차례 이직하면서 자신의 숙련기 술과 임금을 향상시켰다. 둘째, 당시 서울의 인구과밀억제 정책의 일환으로 서울시는 도시 내 공업을 억제했다. 그때 그는 서울 내에서 소규모 공장을 운영하기에 최적화된 청계천 일대에 들어와 사업장을 등록하지 않고 현재까지도 이 영업 방식을 유지하고 있다. 셋째, 산업기술이 자동화되는 등 다양한 방식으로 발전하는 과정에서 그는 대형 시보리를 금형 없이 값싸게 다품종 소량생산을 할 수 있는 임시변통의 기술을 개발하 여 이러한 산업적 변동에 유연하게 대응했다. 이는 그의 작업장에서 공간적으로도 구현된다. 따라서 이 연구는 금속가공 소공인이 당시 산업적·도시적·기술적 상황에 비제도적·비공식적인 전략으로 대응했고, 그 과정에서 축적한 숙련된 기술력으로 자신의 일과 삶을 지탱해왔다는 점을 주장한다.

This study aims to explain the life narratives, behavioral strategies, and meanings of small urban manufacturer through the oral life history, which have received little attention in economic, urban, and technological history. The oral participant is a metalworking craftsman and self-employed worker who operates a small metal-spinning factory in an urban commercial agglomeration in the Cheonggyecheon Mechanical Tool Shop district. Based on ethnographic research on small urban manufacturer, the oral interviews were conducted 10 times for about 22 hours in total, and documents such as work notebooks and transaction statement were collected. Based on this, the chronology of the oral participant’s narrated life history were organized and analyzed to understand his life narrative, behavioral strategies, and meanings. First, when the heavy chemical industry was being fostered during the industrialization period and various vocational training programs were being implemented institutionally, the oral participant moved to Seoul from the countryside and acquired metalworking skills informally through informal employment and non-institutional vocational training, and improved his skills and wages by changing jobs several times. Second, as part of Seoul’s overcrowding control policy, the city of Seoul suppressed industrialization in the city, and he entered the Cheonggyecheon area, which was optimized for running a small factory in Seoul, without registering his business, which he continues to do to this day. Third, as industrial technology developed, he responded flexibly to these industrial fluctuations by developing an ad-hoc skill that allowed him to produce large metal-spinning in small batches of various types cheaply and without molds. This study argues that metalworking craftsmen responded to the industrial, urban, and technological conditions of the time in an informal way, and sustained his livelihoods with relevant skills.
