Today's talk aims to contrast phonology of Korean and Vietnamese for Korean language education. Considering consonants, Korean having 21 typologically most plausible consonants display high universality in the number of consonants. However, Vietnamese shows higher universality in regards to their substance, i.e. it differs from Korean when it comes to the structure of plosives and fricatives. In respect of syllable structure, Korean with its CVC type shows a moderately complex structure while Vietnamese with its CCVC type has a complex structure. The contrastive study of similarities and differences between Korean and Vietnamese in terms of phonology will help not only understand the two languages but also provide useful information for increasing the efficacy of Korean language education for Vietnamese learners of Korean.

This paper aims to propose a new Korean synonyms dictionary for learners, and discuss what information should be provided for both synonym identification and synonym differentiation. The paper will focus on the case of the dictionary which is currently being developed by the Institute of Language and Information Studies, Yonsei University. The information which we provide in the new dictionary is based on evidence from the corpus.

Learners’ corpora are a major resource to reveal the process of learning and language acquisition. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Korean learners learn and acquire Korean connective endings by examining the usage and errors of them in the Korean learners’ corpus, which is the project result of the National Korean Language Institute from 2015 to 2017. As a result of examining the corpus of 700,000 words, more frequently used connective endings were used for texts at a constant rate regardless of proficiency. On the other hand, modal connective endings have been used at intermediate and advanced levels. In addition, the utilization rate and error rate of the connective endings increase to the intermediate level, and the error rate decreases at the advanced level.

This study reviews how basic grammatical units are treated in Korean language grammar education, and plans for improvements. First, it examines what difficulties learners face to make errors when learning each grammatical unit such as morpheme, word, eojeol, phrase, paragraph, sentence, etc. It is widely known that sentence and word are common grammatical units that learners commonly recognize, but eojeol, which is categorized as a space in Korean text, should also be considered. Learners may be confused by the inconsistent units of eojeol and word, inconsistent detachability of grammatical morphemes which comprise eojeol and complex functions. The pattern, a grammatical item treated as a grammatical unit in Korean language education, has been studied with a focus on selecting and arranging the items for application to Korean language education. Recently, it has been actively discussed whether the items of Korean language education should be reorganized, due to the wide range of grammatical items and unclear boundaries among vocabulary items. This study attempts to reorganize existing grammatical items based on grammatical units through analyses.

A commonly used method to analyze the abstracts is move analysis in field of Applied Linguistics. While almost no previous move-analysis tradition exists in Korean Education, we tried for the first time to apply coding frameworks to the abstracts. The present study aimed to both examine move structures in Korean Education abstracts and compare the features of Korean writers and those of foreign writers. This study examined Twenty abstracts collected from articles published in the Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture. Sentences were coded using a five-move scheme following Pho(2008). This study demonstrated that most Korean writers’ abstracts give information on the Aim, Method, Results, Conclusion and while most of the articles by foreign writers omit Backgoround and Aim. It was also found that foreign writers violate the move sequence expected by academics in Korean Education field.

중국계 결혼이주민의 이중언어 교육 경험의 의미

The purpose of this research is to propose a method for multilingual education by examining the bilingual environment of marriage migrants and what they require based on the statements of six Chinese marriage migrants. Researchers collected data from November 2017 to January 2018 and analyzed the results by applying the case study method. The results of this study show that Chinese marriage migrants wish to pursue bilingual education on their children but confront several problems as follows: First, they are worried that the Chinese language will affect the development of the Korean language, resulting in a lack of sociality which will lead to discrimination within their local community. Also, a negative perception of their spouse or parents-in-law also prevented marriage migrants from teaching their children Chinese. Second, bilingual education of marriage migrants’ children could not be implemented due to a lack of education knowledge of marriage migrants and their limited economic conditions. Furthermore, the foundation of support for marriage migrants turned out to be weak while their self-esteem was also low, which lead to the absence of bilingual education. Such research results prove that bilingual education should be implemented on not only multicultural children, but to students as a whole and should also include their parents as well.

This study aims to map out an effective teaching plan of Korean culture education in order to help improve Korean language skills of korean learners. For this purpose, we examined characteristics and advantages of the Krashen’s free voluntary reading program, and tried to implement it with traditional Korean folktales. This study attempts to use traditional folktales with their automaticity and reading fluency help understand the meaning, and incorporate them into the extensive reading methods. From a linguistic standpoint, the folktales are simple, concise and repetitive, and thus considered favorable for learning Korean. From a subjective standpoint, they cover both national values and traditional culture, and are also ethical, universal and have morals which make them suitable for the learners. Moreover, from a justificative standpoint, the folktales form meaningful texts that induce self-regard and motivation in the learners.

In the Transnational era, Many Korean youths are experiencing multinational migration following their parents who migrate abroad for professional purposes. Transnational migration prior to the establishment of identity makes a ‘trans-inter cultural identity'. This cultural identity exhibits a strong identity for both their own culture and other cultures, and with a wide scope of intercultural sensitivity. It is considered as the stepping stone for becoming a global citizen, and TCKs is deemed to have a value and potential for the future. Therefore, The Korean culture education of global citizenship aims to understand the Korean culture and the world culture with the common vision of the world universalism perspective and to solve the global problem caused by the conflict between cultures. As a result, the program suggests three steps. Step 1: Provide objective knowledge of Korean culture from the perspective of world universalism ⇒ Step 2: Understand the Korean culture and World culture by using “the currere method” that can utilize the experience of multinational migration. ⇒ Step 3: Expanding to 'globalization and global problems' to discuss conflicts and problem-solving methods. It is hoped Korean Youth with Experience of Migration to Multiple Countries who have ‘trans-inter cultural identity’ will become mature global citizens through the Korean culture education of global citizenship

The purpose of this study is to examine the concept of intercultural education and to explore the direction of cultural education from the viewpoint of inter-cultural education through Germany's case. In order to approach cultural education from the viewpoint of multilingualism, it is necessary to change direction to cultivate mutual cultural ability. Semantic account of the concept ‘intercultural education’, distinguishing it from multicultural and transcultural education. Intercultural perspective has the ultimate goal of cultivating intercultural communication competence. From the viewpoint of multilingualism, cultural education needs to change direction to cultivate mutual cultural capacity through understanding and acceptance of differences. This study suggests that the philosophical foundation of cultural education should be found in interculturalism.(Yonsei university)

The study aims at investigating the effect of change in phonation types of Korean three-way plosive contrast on Korean learners' acquisition. The new phenomenon, in which lenis is pronounced with nearly the same amount of aspiration as the aspirated, is predominantly led by the speakers from Seoul. Lenis, however, still maintains contrast with aspirated in Kyungsang even if the level of aspiration of lenis is higher than that of the older generation, the speakers over 40s. The study investigates the acquisition aspects of Korean plosives by Chinese learners in Kyungsang where retains the traditional phonation contrast and that of Chinese learners in Seoul where uses a new variant of lenis.

The purpose of this study to propose a teaching-learning model of honorification (honorific speech) in Korean language aimed at learners from multicultural background by using role play. The honorification system in Korean language depends on speaker and listener, object of honorification, and diverse contexts within which the speech takes place. Learners will be able to develop smooth communication skill by learning Korean honorification and using it within context through role play. In this study, Korean honorification is classified into three different categories, including subject honorification, object honorification, and relative honorification. We proposed efficient teaching-learning scheme by dividing the role play-based teaching-learning process into the following three phases: pre-role play phase, implementation phase, which is the main phase of role play, and post-role play phase. This study is expected to contribute not only to the learners’ improved skill of Korean language through better use of honorification, but also to their better understanding of Korean culture and communication skill.

This study aims to examine logical arrangement of paragraphs with focus on discourse index in paragraph writing of learners with academic purpose, and to understand the difficulties faced by them. It can be said that writing with a logical structure is the first most required writing skill for academic-purpose learners. In addition, paragraphs in writing use multiple sentences that deal with a specific subject to form meaningful units, and as such can be regarded as the first basic units for learners with academic purpose. The study begins with looking into the existing studies related to ‘paragraph’, the concept of paragraph, and the arguments regarding paragraph construction requisites, and also examines the types of discourse index used for paragraph logical arrangement. Furthermore, it also checks how such discourse index are logically arranged in real paragraph writing materials of foreign learners. This study shows a need for teaching with emphasis on the meaning and function of discourse index used for paragraph logical arrangement.

There are 32 word-formation units that are duplicated in the beginner and intermediate TOPIK word units. In the vocabulary between beginner and intermediate TOPIK, there are 328 words that are derived using the same word-formation unit. This may cause a decrease in the discrimination of words between the beginner and intermediate levels, but it can also be overcome by re-election for the word-formation unit of the beginner and intermediate vocabulary. Including the related words from beginner and intermediate TOPIK vocabulary in addition to duplicate word-formation units also leads to a larger construction of vocabulary, which also reduces vocabulary discrimination in language proficiency tests. Therefore, it is believed that it is necessary to reduce the proportion of construction of vocabulary, along with the vocabulary that is coined in duplicate when selecting the required vocabulary for TOPIK.

This study used Multi-facets Rasch Model to examine how native Korean-speaking and non-native Korean-speaking pre-service teacher assess students’s oral Korean performance. The evaluation behaviors of two groups of pre-teachers were compared with regard to internal consistency, severity and evaluated criteria. Results of Many-facets Rasch Measurement analysis showed that the most of the native pre-teacher and non-native pre-teacher maintained acceptable levels of internal consistency, with one inconsistent raters in each group. These two pre-teacher’s group also exhibited similar severity patterns across different tasks. However, substantial dissimilarities emerged in the evaluation criteria teachers used to assess students’ performance.

This study discusses Korean ecopoetry from a cognitive point of view. A poetry as a kind of ecological literature which deal with ecological problems about life, nature, human, environment is commonly called ecopoetry. This study has classified ecopoetry as nature or natural beauty-appreciated poetry, destruction of the ecosystem-described poetry and ecological restoration-oriented poetry. Also a study on ecopoetry is examined from cognitive perspective in which is believed that knowledge by mental imagery, concept, language is represented on mind. In this study there will be analysis on Korean ecopoetry by looking into text, image, metaphor-scheme consisted of frame and script based on 'representation'.

The first industrial revolution that started with the invention of the 18th century steam engine, the second industrial revolution which started mass production of Fordism using the conveyor belt in the early 20th century, the third industrial revolution that started using the robot since the 1970s, and through all these times, modern society has been changed drastically by the fourth Industrial Revolution using artificial intelligence. However, despite the changes in the educational environment due to social development, the school has maintained its early modernity even in the face of various problems. The purpose of this paper is therefore to understand the civilization historical changes that could affect the whole field of human society in the fourth industrial revolution, which emerged in the early part of the 21st century, and to provide appropriate alternatives that can be applied to Korean educational field.

대화적 상황에서 사용되는 의지 감탄사는 형태는 동일해도 화맥 안에서 여러 가 지 의미 기능을 수행한다. 이에 본고에서는 실제적이고 자연스러운 사용을 분석하기 위해 TV 대담 프로그램을 전사하여 세밀하게 분석한 결과 하나의 감탄사가 기존의 정의에 비해 훨씬 더 다양한 의미 기능으로 사용되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 더 나 아가 한국어 교육적 차원에서 대화에서 쓰이는 감탄사의 의미 기능의 분류와 교육의 필요성에 대해 제고해보고자 한다.



플립러닝(flipped learning)에 대한 국내 연구 동향 분석

The purpose of this study is to find the research trends relating to flipped learning in Korea. For this stduy, a total of 117 articles in journals from 2014 to 2017 were selected from the result of research database, DBpia. The results of the research were as follows: (a) The study related to flipped learning has been started since 2014. (b) There were a remarkable growth in the flipped learning research in 2017 compared to 2014. (c) Most studies mainly dealt with the language such as English and Korean. In addition, college students were the most frequent sampled population.

Recently, for the better understanding of differences in learning achievements, researches have begun comparing learning achievements between learners in the same educational contents and methods. In this study, we examine whether there exists a difference in academic achievements between genders and between Hanja and non-Hanja culture learners. We also investigate whether those who have received Korean language education from basic to intermediate with identical textbooks and identical curriculum have higher academic achievements than those who have not received such education. To this end, employing the linear mixed model, we carried out a statistical analysis over the Korean language fulfillment score data collected from a Korean-language institute administrated by K university. The message this article delivers is that the high score group tends to make a slow constant progress as advancing Korean language level, which is contrary to the low score group who tends to withdraw in a significant degree of achievement. Another point made in this paper is that the females perform much better than males in the high score group, but in the low score group quite oppositely much poorer performance has been observed. Finally, it has been found that it is better strategy to learn Korean in the same institute from basic than to start-off as intermediate level.

The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of Korean language education focusing on the Support Center for Foreign Workers where Korean language programs for migrant workers are established. Also, this study has a purpose to examine the social geographical accessibility of educational institutions by comparing the distribution of industrial complexes and Support Center for Foreign Workers. Although previous studies have focused on Support Centers for Foreign Workers, they have been limited to Seoul, Gyeonggi province or limited to base centers. Also, in discussing geographical access, they did not measure the actual distance but only the geographical location. It was not known the actual access route. In this study, actual distance is measured and the actual time is considered by numericalizing the class time and the number of teachers. As a result, we found that Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Gwangju are excellent regions, and Gyeongsangbuk-Province, Chungcheongbuk-Province, Gyeongsangnam-Province and Incheon are vulnerable areas. In addition, Ulsan and Sejong were found to be the most vulnerable because of lack of center accessibility. These results suggest that vulnerable areas have room for improvement. This study is meaningful in that it considers accessibility by analyzing the distribution of Support Center for Foreign Workers nationwide.

This research centres on casual learners of Korean – those whose major is not Korean studies and yet are studying Korean. We examine the motivation of these people in learning Korean and their expectations with regards to cultural aspect in the training curriculum. In order to carry out the research project, we surveyed three representative training institutions with a total number of 500 learners and some trainers. We also examine the curriculum, textbooks that are being used in these institutions. Through the research, we are trying to argue that (1) there is a need to develop a separate Korean training curriculum for casual learners, (2) the cultural contents in the current curriculum are now linked to linguistic skill training and have not been made independently strong enough to meet the expectations of learners; (3) in order to obtain higher results in teaching Korean culture to learners, attention is needed to promote the comparative perspective between Vietnamese culture and Korean culture in cultural teaching.

The research is aimed at suggesting effective ways to improve the Korean language course during the Korean Culture Course, which is held annually by the AKS. The Korean Culture Course is the goal of nurturing an overall understanding of Korea by providing foreign university students with the opportunity to directly learn and experience Korean language and culture, and thus study Korean in the future. Korean language courses totaled 30 hours during the program. In this study, a survey and interviews were conducted on students who took intermediate classes from 2015 to 2017 and as a result, it was necessary to design a class based on grammar and vocabulary related to Korean culture courses.

This study is an attempt to examine the Korean politeness features in value culture. Two main analyses are performed in this research, face and rank. The 'face' and 'power' is very important conception in politeness theory, but was analyzed in the West-centrism. However, these conception and features need to reinterpret from East Asian perspective. 'Face' in Korean culture is not related to individual aspect but social aspect, and rank is closely connected with 'face'. 'Rank' in Korean culture is relate to authoritarianism in sociocultural aspect. In its final analysis, this study suggests Korean politeness needs to be considered the distinct characteristics of the culture.
