With King Sunjo's assumption of direct rule in 1803, Kim Jo- soon, who led the Sedo(in-power) Regime of the Andong Kim clan, maintained a lenient stance toward Catholics, allowing the Church to enjoy a degree of peace. Kim Yu-geun, who succeeded Kim Jo- soon following the latter's death in 1832, also maintained this tolerant attitude. He rejected demands for Catholic persecution made by Cho In-young, the head of the Pungyang Cho faction, and dismissed yearly appeals for persecution from young officials paying respects in Seoul and civil service examinees gathered in the capital. Furthermore, Kim Yu- geun consistently intervened to ensure that Catholics received lenient punishments. Consequently, Bishop Imbert(Yang-jae) referred to Kim Yu-geun as a benefactor of the Church and ordered a pocket watch from Macau to present to him as a token of gratitude. Their lenient stance was part of a reconciliatory and inclusive approach to state administration, and was also related to Kim Yu-geun’s hobby of collecting European antiques through Yu Jin-gil, a Catholic translator and official(dang-sang yeok-gwan). However, in the latter half of 1838, suspicions arose regarding the entry and activities of Western missionaries, and severe famines struck Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces in the autumn of that year, leading to more consecutive instances of Catholic persecution. In addition, the persecution spread to Seoul with the arrest of Kwon Deuk-in on December 2. Amidst these developments, on February 20, 1839, Lee Ji- yeon and Cho Byung-hyun were appointed as Minister of Personnel(Ijo Panseo) and Minister of Punishments(Hyeongjo Panseo), respectively, and Kim Yu-geun retired from office due to illness the following day. Around this time, the pattern of persecution shifted dramatically; what had previously been accidental and sporadic transformed into a systematic and full-scale campaign. This change occurred because the Pungyang Cho faction, dissatisfied with Kim Yu-geun's lenient policy toward Catholics and backed by public opinion from other anti-Catholic elements, decisively carried out the persecution by exploiting the weakening of Kim Yu-geun's political influence. On March 5, Lee Ji-yeon, the Right State Councilor and a member of the Pungyang Cho faction, officially initiated the persecution by requesting a large-scale crackdown, which led to the promulgation of the Sahak-tochi-ryeong (Edict for the Eradication of Western Learning). However, Cho Byung-hyun, newly appointed as Minister of Punishments, initially delayed taking office and attempted to contain the crackdown as a localized affair through consultation with Kim Jwa-geun, based on the cooperative ties between the two influential in-law families. Moreover, by prohibiting police officers (pojol) from looting the property of believers, Cho dampened the officers' zeal for arrests, temporarily halting the momentum of the persecution. Nevertheless, when the Pungyang Cho faction promised rewards to police officers who achieved success in arresting Catholics, the persecution suddenly intensified after May 29, resulting in the mass arrest of three foreign missionaries and prominent Catholic leaders. Finally, Cho In-young concluded the persecution by drafting and promulgating the Chucksa-yuneum (Royal Edict Denouncing Heterodoxy) on October 18. On October 21, Cho In-young ascended to the position of Right State Councilor and took control of the political arena. By branding Catholics as traitors akin to the Yellow Turbans or the White Lotus sect and arresting and executing a large number of Western missionaries, church leaders, and believers, Cho successfully seized political dominance.

Won Susanna, who attended both the first and second beatification trials for the martyrs of the Byeongin Persecution, came from a family of martyrs and served as a lay leader who spearheaded the reentry of missionary priests and the reconstruction of the Catholic Church. Won Susanna was the daughter of King Gojong's wet nurse and the godmother of Lady Min(Mary Min), the biological mother of King Gojong, who was baptized by Bishop Mutel on October 11, 1896. Previously, Won Susanna's mother was mistakenly known as the 1868 martyr “Martha Park.” However, a re-examination reveals that the historically confirmed wet nurse of King Gojong was not Martha Park, but Lucia Lee, and that Won Susanna was the daughter of this Lucia Lee. Won Susanna managed a nursing home established by Bishop Blanc in 1885. Later, she lived there with her widowed daughter-in-law, Mary Kim(sister of Father Kim Yoon-geun), and is presumed to have managed the nursing home until her death in 1926. Won Susanna's hometown, Yongmeori in Goyang, was the ancestral home of the Won family, where a Catholic faith community appears to have formed before 1827. Martyrs emerged from among the believers of the Goyang Yongmeori Won family. Won Yun-cheol(John), a martyr of 1866, was Won Susanna's grandfather, and Won Gwi-im(Mary), a martyr of 1839, was a fifth-degree relative(paternal cousin) to Won Susanna. Im Chi-baek(Joseph), who was martyred during the Byeongo Catholic Persecution(1846), was related to the Won family by marriage. His son, Im Seong-sil(Peter), contributed to the reentry of missionary priests and their pastoral activities, and also kept the financial funds of the Apostolic Vicariate of Korea until his death in 1880. Park Sun-jib(Peter), whose family members were martyred during the Byeongin Catholic Persecution(1866–1873) and who himself recovered and buried the remains of Bishop Berneux and others, took the lead in the reentry of missionary priests and church reconstruction, and testified about the martyrs of the Gihae, Byeongo, and Byeongin persecutions at the beatification trials, was also related to Won Susanna by marriage(the father of her daughter's husband). When forming this marital alliance with Park Sun-jib, Won Susanna took the initiative in proposing the marriage between their children. This can be seen as a union between leading lay families who cooperated with each other, shared by the common ground of being martyr families. The in-law families of Won Susanna(the Im and Park families), like the Won family, produced martyrs during the “persecution period” and cooperated with Won Susanna in the reentry of missionary priests, pastoral activities, and church reconstruction after the 1870s. The dedication and efforts of these lay leaders—who were the families and colleagues of martyrs—made a significant contribution to the deeprooting of Catholicism in Korean society.

Building upon existing empirical research that has primarily focused on the individual biographies of the Gusan martyrs and the progress of their beatification and canonization, this study shifts its analytical focus to the relocation of their graves as a significant historical event in its own right. It aims to reconstruct the course of these relocations and reflect upon their theological significance. To this end, the relocation process is examined across three distinct periods: (1) the excavation and transfer of the relics of Blessed Kim Seong-u in 1927; (2) the shrine-development initiatives and partial relocation attempts between 1949 and 1980; and (3) the final relocation of the remaining graves to Gusan Martyrs’ Shrine in 2013-2014, prompted by a large-scale residential land development project. Furthermore, these events are reexamined within the theological frameworks of the veneration of relics, the doctrine of the communion of saints, and the canonical nature of beatification and canonization processes. The findings reveal that the martyrs' gravesite at Gusan Martyrs' Shrine did not emerge through a single, linear progression. Rather, it was completed after the church had faced repeated challenges under shifting historical circumstances—namely, the Japanese colonial-era irrigation project, the post-liberation shrine development movement, and the 21stcentury new town development. Ultimately, each of these historical transitions was deeply intertwined with the Catholic Church's enduring tradition of venerating the relics of its martyrs.

This article examines the historical context, transmission channels, and patterns of exchange and conflict that accompanied the arrival of Western missionary organizations in Hong Kong after the port's opening in 1842, and explores—as a continuous process of localization, adaptation, and ongoing rebirth—how these organizations interacted with local society to give "birth" to a distinctive Christian community. Departing from prior scholarship that has treated Protestantism, Anglicanism, and Catholicism separately, it examines these Christian bodies' missionary activities as a whole. As a colonial city, Hong Kong occupied a distinctive position amid the upheavals of modern China, serving as both a site of cultural exchange and a breeding ground for late Qing revolutionary movements, with Christianity coming to occupy a pivotal place in its social and cultural life. Though early bloody persecution stemmed from conflicts with Confucian values and anti-Christian sentiment on the mainland, the modern elites trained in church schools nourished China's reformist thought, while Hong Kong also served as a missionary hub extending into East Asia, particularly Korea. Hong Kong Christianity developed a distinctive form fusing international universality with Chinese tradition, mirroring the colony's own hybrid character. Missionaries cooperated with the colonial government to build Hong Kong's educational, medical, and welfare systems; Christian schools cultivated local elites, while Chinese converts gradually established selfsustaining churches, reinforcing localization from the mid-twentieth century onward through the voluntary participation of local residents. That the Catholic and Protestant churches jointly responded at moments of crisis, despite differing structures and theology, reflects a shared heritage rooted together in Hong Kong soil. Hong Kong's Christian community is thus not a product of topdown imperialism, but an indigenized Christianity that evolved from the grassroots through successive upheavals—war, refugee influx, political persecution. Even after 1997, under "One Country, Two Systems," it has continued operating schools and welfare facilities as a pillar of civil society. Today, the Sinicization of Religion policy and the National Security Law pose serious challenges to this community's historical autonomy and open missionary tradition. Yet drawing on deep roots forged through a century and a half of war, disaster, and ideological violence, and on robust ties to the global church, Hong Kong Christianity continues to uphold its grassroots heritage while evolving into a renewed body that actively adapts to shifting historical circumstances.
