The Pensive Bodhisattva(半跏思惟像) was made in the form of sitting on a cylindrical stool. The chair is a distinctive feature of the Pensive Bodhisattva statue, which is difficult to find in other artworks, and it is a prominent element of the statue in Korea, where the Pensive Bodhisattva is popular. The stool on the Pensive Bodhisattva is closely connected to the structure of the statue and can be used as an indicator to estimate the time of the statue's production, as it shows a certain change in shape. This paper analyzes the types of chairs, identifies the production period of the Ancient Korea Pensive Bodhisattva statue, and suggests that the stool of the statue is characteristic of the Korean Pensive Bodhisattva, thereby distinguishing it from the Chinese and Japanese Pensive Bodhisattva statues. The Chair of Pensive Bodhisattva appeared in Korea when the statue was made in three dimensions. The halo was installed at the back of the statue's head, causing the celestial robe expression on the Chinese statue to disappear and creating a seamless surface across the entire statue. Here, the chair was a new element that appeared to carve the side and back of the statue, harmonizing with its overall structure. The Pensive Bodhisattva chairs can be classified into four types based on drapery folds and cushion patterns. In these types, it was confirmed that the seat of the Pensive Statue in Ancient Korean was expressed in a specific manner and gradually evolved to become distinct from the statue. The early Pensive Bodhisattva Statue depicts a chair as a connecting seat within the substructure. The seat’s shape is divided into a cushion pattern and waist ornaments(腰佩垂飾). In the intermediate stage, the chair was expressed in structural separation and pattern. The chair's size decreased, and the sculpture's posture became more natural. Furthermore, the use of a new technology to attach a metal plate on the back of a sculpture with an intermediate chair suggests that the manufacturing technology has changed from the previous one. After that, the Pensive Bodhisattva's chair becomes a separate chair with a clear shape solely through its structure. The distinctive cushion pattern that set the chair apart from the sculpture has disappeared, and the waist ornaments, which once bordered the clothes and the chairs, are expressed as simple accessories. The chair of the statue changed into various shapes to reflect the trends of the Pensive Bodhisattvas during ancient Korea. These chairs were made separately from the start. The Pensive Bodhisattva’s chair can be interpreted in relation to the status of the Bodhisattva statue at that time. In Korea, the Pensive Statue was placed as an attendant statue of the Buddha Triad or established as the central statue. Furthermore, the fact that it remains a large statue among the Buddhist sculptures of the ancient Korean period suggests that this statue may have been created as an object of worship in a temple. This situation may be related to the new expression of a chair on the Pensive Bodhisattva Statue, which features an exposed rear surface. The evolution of the Pensive Statue chair also continued in Japan, where the sculpture was passed down. At first, the Japanese Pensive Statue Chair was similar to the formation of that in Korea, but it gradually changed over time. The chair suddenly increased in size, transforming into a lotus pedestal. As a result, the waist ornaments that distinguished the folds of clothes and chairs disappeared. In addition, the Japanese Pensive Bodhisattva Statue, which was placed on the pedestal, underwent a transformation in which the halo was installed on a pillar rising from the bottom, rather than the occipital part.

The Ten-story Stone Pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site(敬天寺址 十 層石塔) is a stone pagoda with a clear construction year(1348) and the name of its originator. In addition, with its unique structure, splendid relief, and realistic architectural sculptures, it is a pagoda that enables rich consideration in Buddhist art history research. Until now, The key of the previous research was to find a connection between the stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site and the Yuan(元) Dynasty. This was a discussion based on the fact that the pagoda's a-shaped(亞字形) structure was similar to that of the Lama Pagoda(喇嘛塔), which was popular in the Yuan Dynasty, and the fact that Goryongbo(高 龍普, ?~1362), famous as a pro-Yuan force, appeared as the originator in the inscription supported the claim. However, there is a limitation in that it is difficult to find similar characteristics other than the flat structure to see the stylistic origin of the stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site only as the Lama Pagoda. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to study the construction background and stylistic characteristics, which can be said to be a major issue of the stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site. First, by examining the records related to Gyeongcheonsa Temple, it was found that it was actively used as a royal temple immediately after its foundation and that the mission of Gyeongcheonsa Temple in the late 12th and early 13th centuries could not be confirmed in the records. In addition, many temples destroyed by the war with Mongolia after the mid-Goryeo period, Gyeongcheonsa Temple also estimated that the function of the royal temple was stopped for this reason. It was possible to judge that Gyeongcheonsa Temple was also reconstructed through the discovery of roof tile(瓦當), which was popular in the late Goryeo Dynasty. Also, it is estimated that the originators of the pagoda sponsored the construction of the pagoda with the Buddhist wish through Chinese characters and Mantra inscriptions. The discussion was conducted on the style of the stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site, focusing on the wooden construction elements of the pagoda. The main body of the pagoda is composed of railing stone, pagoda body stone, and roof stone, and you can see the delicate architectural design. Beside, wooden architecture cases were confirmed in the fragments of the stone pagoda excavated in Busan etc. Therefore, in this paper, the architectural expression of the stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site was compared and analyzed with the tower-style stone pagoda(樓閣式 石塔), which was mainly erected during the Song Dynasty of China. The tower-style stone pagoda was one of the types of stone pagodas built based on abundant stone materials in the Gangnam(江南) area of China. Representatively, White Pagoda in Zhakou(閘口白塔), stone pagoda from Kaiyuan Temple(開元寺 石塔) and Feiying-Pagoda(飛英塔) were figured out as the examples of the tower-style stone pagodaand these examples showed similar style with the stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site. Also, the reliefs were also matched with the iconography and topic.

The Buddhist monk artisans of the Joseon Dynasty are considered unique within East Asian Buddhism. They were monks with special technical skills, including monk-architects who built Buddhist halls, monk-sculptors who created Buddhist sculptures, monk-painters who produced Buddhist paintings, and monk-carvers who carved images and texts into wood. In China, professional painters called huagong (畫工) were responsible for producing Buddhist art during the Ming Dynasty. In Japan, the renowned sculptors Unkei (運慶) and Kaikei (快慶) received dharma names as monks do, but this simply indicated that the state had granted a type of honorary position on them. The Japanese sculptors ran a type of private workshop based on blood ties or teacher-student relationships. This paper examines changes in the perception of Buddhist monk-painters during the Joseon Dynasty that can be identified through changes in their appellations and analyzes their organization, working system, and wages. There were monk artisans who produced Buddhist art further in the past, but it was only with the Joseon Dynasty’s official adoption of a Confucian state that particular monks came to be exclusively responsible for producing Buddhist sculptures and paintings and several schools of monk-sculptors and monk-painters with distinctive regional styles formed. The application of dancheong (traditional decorative coloring) of buildings and the production of Buddhist paintings were perceived as specialties of monk-painters. In particular, the overall process of producing a Buddhist painting from its design to its enlivening through an eye-opening ritual was believed to fall outside the scope of artisans from the commoner class. Some temples became famous for training apprentices and producing monk-artisans by transmitting key techniques. The formation of schools of monk-painters and the passing along of the traditions within these schools was made possible by production practices that taught knowledge, skills, and styles through apprenticeship education under the leadership of head monk-painters. These head monk-painters directed and supervised the entire process of the production of Buddhist paintings from the creation of preparatory drawings through the eye-opening of completed works. Buddhist paintings were produced through collaboration among several monk-painters in a school, and techniques were shared and disseminated among them according to their skill levels rather than being monopolized by particular members. The areas of their activities were broad since they worked based on both the temples where they were staying and human networks built around the monastic lineages (門中) to which they belonged. The roles of monk-painters expanded when they started participating in public works after the state handicraft system collapsed and when they began to fill local communities’ needs for paintings. The expansion of their roles impacted the styles of Buddhist paintings. Based on their financial capacity and the areas of their activities, monk-painters served as further agents for Buddhist projects by working as donors, fundraisers, and verifiers. Monk artisans were a distinctive feature of the Joseon Dynasty within the East Asian cultural sphere. The study of the creators of Buddhist paintings will enhance the understanding of Buddhist temples as a space for producing and consuming art.

This article is a study to find out the type of Tiger Paintings(虎圖) expressed in temple murals in the late 18C and early 20C period and the cause of new iconography. In Chapter 2, we investigated the changes in the type and personality of Tiger Paintings. The mystical white tiger is an auspicuous sign(吉兆) and combines with various auspicious animals(瑞獸) and plants in the guardian deity, strongly reflecting the character of the auspicuous symbols(吉祥). In particular, the process of changing the white porcelain tiger pattern from 18C <Magpie and Tiger Painting(虎鵲圖)> to 19C's 'Tiger and Magpie and Lion Painting' and <Smoking Tiger Painting(虎煙圖)> was analyzed. Therefore, it can be seen that <Magpie and Tiger Painting> and <Smoking Tiger Painting> appear first in royal kilns(官窯) white porcelain(白磁) paintings than in temple murals. In Chapter 3, we first analyzed the auspicious White Tiger Paintings(白虎圖) and Magpie and Tiger Painting which are strong in characteristics of auspicuous symbols expressed in temple murals. Accordingly, in 1798, Jang Gyeong-gak of Seonamsa Temple, the royal shrine, was viewed as a work that showed the early style of Magpie and Tiger Painting. Next, the auspicious <White Tiger Paintings> such as Daeungjeon Hall of Beomeosa Temple(1871), Eungjinjeon Hall of Bongjeongsa Temple(1886), and Myeongbujeon Hall of Tongdosa Temple(1890) were combined with <Magpie and Tiger Painting> to strengthen the public's characteristics. Among them, Beomeosa Temple and Bongjeongsa Temple suggested the possibility of a work by a group of painters in the same region due to similar arrangements and styles of animals and plants on the road around them. In the next second section, we analyzed <ItoshiHobongyeon(二兎侍虎捧煙圖)>, which is ‘a drawing in which two rabbits help smoking tigers’, to find the characteristics and find the cause of the formation of the drawing. <ItoshiHobongyeon>, painted on the outer wall of a temple in Gyeonggi-do, is a painting that helps two rabbits bite a tiger with an Along pipe. Among them, the mural (1878) in Myeongbujeon Hall of Hwagyesa Temple suggested the possibility of being a work of a knowledgeable artist by material, composition, and painting method. In particular, the mural styles such as Yongjusa Temple, Paldalsa Temple, and Semasa Temple were similar, so it was considered to have been produced by Buddhist monk painters ‘Jeongam(靜庵)’ in the 20C Gyeonggi area. In other words, it clearly proved the hypothesis that the ‘Tale of Hwang Paldo(黃八道傳 說)’ in Chungcheong Province was transformed in Gyeonggi Province. Japanese colonial era Since the early publication of the Traditional Oral Tale(口 碑說話) survey report nationwide, the popular ‘tobacco-bloating tiger’ was no longer a valiant and an austere animal due to the publication of traditional Korean fairy tales. The foolish strong tiger was compared to the corrupt and incompetent class of power at the time, the Japanese who used coercion and ferocity, and the sly weak rabbit was compared to the people who avoided crisis with weakness and weakness. This was the last step in the conversion of an auspicuous sign(吉兆) and a tiger from the Auspicuous symbols(吉祥辟邪) painted on the temple murals into satire and humorous figures.

The Four-Sided Stone Pillar Buddhas Images in Gyeongju Chilburam(七佛庵) Hermitage on Mt. Namsan is one of the major works widely known and always mentioned when we discuss the history of Buddhist sculpture in unified Silla. The Buddhas Images are compared with those following the traditional style of Buddhas images in Northern Zhou Period(北周) and Sui Dynasty(隋) and employing some of the elements from new styles among the ones in Chang'an (長安) developed during early Tang in two divisions of the extraneous style of Buddhas images and the traditional style of Buddhas images. On account of these characteristics of its style, the Four-Sided Stone Pillar Buddhas Images in Chilburam Hermitage is assumed to have been made in the early 8th century. According to the analysis, in the Four-Sided Stone Pillar Buddhas Images in Chilburam Hermitage, the Bhaisajyaguru Buddhas images of the individual mudra are placed as main Buddhas in the east, and the rest, south, west, and north sides, those of the common mudra are arranged. Also, we can assume that it may have formed a complex structure in which they worshiped the Four-Sided Stone Pillar Buddhas Images as they walked around the sutra carved stone of The Merit and Virtue of the Past Vows of Invocating Medicine Buddha(藥師琉璃光如來本願功德經, Kr. Yaksayurigwangnyeoraebonwongongdeokgyeong) and enhanced their Bhaisajyaguru belief. The time when the Four-Sided Stone Pillar Buddhas Images in Chilburam Hermitage was formed was when there was severe national disaster resulted from natural disaster. The way to get over it was for them to practice Bhaisajyaguru belief grounded on The Merit and Virtue of the Past Vows of Invocating Medicine Buddha. We can suppose that they should have formed and worshiped the Four-Sided Stone Pillar Buddhas Images in Chilburam Hermitage in a way to practice Bhaisajyaguru belief.

Buddhist paintings from the early Joseon Dynasty coexist with the traditions of the preceding Goryeo period and new iconography and painting styles. Furthermore, the iconography and painting techniques of early Joseon Buddhist paintings continued into the 17th century, breaking through the gap caused by the war, and became the foundation of late Joseon Buddhist paintings. This tendency is also revealed in Buddhist paintings depicting Amitabha Buddha. The painting of Amitabha’s preaching, housed in the Okura Shukokan Museum(大倉集古館) in Tokyo, Japan, is one of the representative works that coexist with the traditions of the Goryeo Dynasty and the new trends of the Joseon Dynasty. The painting of Amitabha Preaching, housed in the Okura Shukokan, measures 178.3 cm in height and 126.1 cm in width, and is painted on a hemp cloth. This Buddhist painting depicts Amitabha Buddha, surrounded by the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, including Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta, and the Eight Guardian Deities behind them. Painted in 1591, this Buddhist painting was enshrined in Sudoam Temple on Buldaesan Mountain in Jangseong, Jeollanam-do. This painting, while accepting the iconography of the ‘Amitabha Eight Great Bodhisattvas’ established during the Goryeo Dynasty, attempted to transform it through the composition and the posture of the Bodhisattva, and mainly accepted the eight guardian deities that appear in the painting of Sakyamuni’s Vulture Peak Assembly. This painting is characterized by its expressive eyes and lips, and comparison with Buddhist paintings enshrined in nearby regions from the same period demonstrates the regional characteristic of its style. It was also confirmed that this expressive technique was also inherited in Buddhist paintings from the late Joseon Dynasty in the same region.
