This study first examined the origin and development of Buddhist concept of a Pure Land underlying Pure Land art. The question of specificity and genericity of Pure Land art was then examined in Buddhist steles found in India, China and Korea. The idea of ‘Pure Land’ was originally formed in India, based on the idea of “Buddha in ten directions”. It was believed that Bodhisattva could be accomplished and people could be resurrected in the next life. The Pure Land idea was theoretically established by Yongsoo and Sechin in India, Damran in China and Wonhyo in Korea. Through this establishment, suggested practice techniques included “easy path”, “other-power”, Samadhi (serenity), penetrative insight (visualization), and chanting. It would be more correct to state that Amitabha already existed in India, rather than emerging from China, when the Indian Pure Land Idea was considered. According to Pratyutpanna Samadhi Sutra, in India the practice of Amitabha Samadhi was recommended before meeting Maitreya and then repeated afterwards. A Buddhist stele found in Mohammed Nari showed this uniquely Indian Bodhisattva-practice (which takes a long time with Ascetic practices) and their conception of the Pure Land. Both Amitabha and Maitreya are the Buddha encountered in the future. The specific circumstances of the times determined which Buddha to believe in the Chinese Buddhism. Hence, Amitabha Pure land was predominant in Mahayana Buddhism from the 7th century in China, together with active translation of Pure land Buddhism into art. The idea of Pure land exists not in isolation, but with a systematic structure in the Avatamska view of the world which is the culmination of Mahayana Buddhism. In Silla’s (Korea) Pure land art, the relationship between Amitabha and Maitreya, and furthermore the question of how Amitabha Pure land and Buddha (without his Pure land) are connected to each other are analyzed further. Because Pure land is the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice, the relationship between Amitabha and Maitreya can be viewed as a temporal relationship towards Buddhahood (the Buddha nature). Gulbulsaji Stone Buddha image of 4 directions showed Sakyamuni, Bhaisajyaguru, Maitreya and Amitabha in consecutive order and ultimately concluded with Amitabha’s western Pure land. This structure reflects Silla’s Pure land idea that Pure land is not separated from our mundane world and furthermore Pure land itself does not exist in separation. In conclusion, Pure land is not a place in heaven, but enlightenment itself. Pure land is realized through Buddha. That is, the abstract image of Amitabha is evidenced by the historical of Buddha. Buddha presented Maitreya Pure land, based on Amitabha. Such universality of Buddha represents the genericity of Pure land art, which was expressed in diverse forms throughout Far East Asia. In a formal religious practice, especially in Pure Land Buddhism, people can be liberated from ignorance, united with the nature of Buddha, and progressed towards Amitabha’s western Pure land beyond their individual boundaries. This can be achieved through penetrative insight (visualization). Pure land art symbolically respects the objects of penetrative insight, based on the above mentioned theory.

This study dated the time at the first half of the 9th century when the stone seated Buddha image on Gwanbong Peak of Mt. Palgongsan in Gyeongsan-gun Gyeongsangbuk-do was made, inquiring into its style. Furthermore, this study showed that the Budda image is a seated Buddha image in the Bhumisparsa- mudra(降魔觸地印), unlike what was known as a Buddha image holding a small medicine bottle before. In particular, this study closely examined the background of the Buddhist image being located at the top of Mt. Palgongsan. Considering Mt. Palgongsan was one of the Five Great Mountains(五岳) where a class of national memorial ceremonies, Joongsa(中祀), was hold during the Silla Dynasty according to the article on memorial ceremonies(祭祀條) in volume 32 of the Chronicles of the Three States(『三國史記』), the Buddha image was assumed to be made when the traditional memorial ceremonies for the five holy mountains was changed into a Buddhist ritual. This is critical in examining the religious background of Buddhist images located on mountaintops in Korea. In other words, the Buddhist images were formed when the altars of memorial ceremonies for holy mountains were integrated into Buddhist temple sites, which means that as Buddhism widely spread, the national security was prayed for in Buddha's dignity and enlightenment, not only in the traditional memorial ceremonies for holy mountains. For example, Buddha Triads on a cliff at Mt. Seondosan in Gyeongju-si make it certain that the Buddhist tradition had already begun during the Three Kingdoms Period before worshipping the holy Five Great Mountains. However, the Buddha images of Buseoksa Temple or Seokguram Temple are considered to have had a profound influence on placing the seated Buddha images in the Bhumisparsa-mudra on mountaintops after the Unified Silla Period. Especially, it seems that the Buddha image on Gwanbong Peak of Mt. Palgongsan was strongly influenced by the main Buddha of Seokguram Temple and a kind of baldachin on the head established its own distinctive figure. Thus, it is assumed that the Buddha of Gwanbong Peak showed a blended basic figure of traditional mountain worshipping and Buddhism and revived a tradition the general public kept in mind at the present day. Mountain worship has a shamanistic aspect in curing, praying for rain, worshipping the dragon king of the sea, which returned to Buddhism and led to Buddhist ceremonies worshipping Medicine Buddha for curing illnesses.

It is presumed that Hongcheok, the founder of Silsangsanmun, constructed the Silsangsa in 828 under the patronage of King Heungdeok. This was related to the King Heungdeok's policy. In order to prevent the regional rebellion and to console the regional population, King Heungdeok treated Zen Priests preferentially. It appears that King Heungdeok appointed Hongcheok as the national priest and sponsored the construction of Silsangsa to settle the public sentiment. As Hongcheok established the Silsangsa, his disciple Soocheol expanded the fortune of the Silsangsa to its fullest. According to Simwonsa Soocheol Pagoda Monument, Soocheol returned to Mt. Jiri in 836 to expand the Silsangsa. Soocheol was sponsored by King Munseong to enlarge the temple, and the iron Buddha was probably constructed at this time as well. The expression of the outer garment of the iron Buddha was similar to the outer garment of Baengnyulsa Buddha made in late 8th century and the expression shown in Changnyeong Inyangsa stele. Therefore, Silsangsa iron Buddha was probably made earlier than Borimsa iron Buddha, which was made in 858. If so, why did King Munseong support Soocheol? This issue was deeply related to the background of the iron Buddha. After King Heungdeok passed away and King Munseong was on the throne, there were three attempts to usurp the throne. During the process, the throne was turned over from Ingyeongye to Yeyounggye. Successfully gaining power, King Munseong aggressively supported Zen priests similar to King Heungdeok to control the regional rebellious forces. Furthermore, Namwon was a key military site to control the anti-royal forces in the southwestern coastal area. King Munseong chose Soocheol to accomplish his political goal instead of Hongcheok, who supported King Minae. As in the case of building the Bongamsa iron Buddha, Soocheol probably was motivated to build the iron Buddha to protect the temple from the frequent wars and to console those who were sacrificed in these wars. The reason why the statue was made in iron and not in gold was due to the collapse of the Jang Bogo fleet. The Jang Bogo fleet secured a massive amounts of coins from China and supplied them to temples in Silla and Japan. After the death of Jang Bogo in 841 and the persecution of Buddhism of Tang Dynasty in 844, supplies of copper through the Jang Bogo Fleet did not flow as freely as before. The making of large-size Buddha statue in Silsang temple is also related with vast metallurgical industry near Namwon. According to ground surface investigation, Unbong plateau produces largest amount of iron. On this account, the Silsangsa iron Buddha was made of iron instead of copper in between 840 to 856. Until this time, there are two theories for the name of Silsangsa iron Buddha. Considering the iron Buddha as a Bhaishajyaguru Buddha was problematic because the source of the record was uncertain. In addition, the Healing Buddha Hall appeared to be a later addition in Joseon Dynasty according to Cheonggyjip. In other words, the iron Buddha was recognized as a Bhaishajyaguru Buddha due to a general customs of the public at the time. Considering the iron Buddha as an Amitabha Buddha requires further examination since there had been no basic studies on the iron hand, which was found inside the iron Buddha. Also, there is a possibility that the iron hand was inserted inside the iron Buddha while the iron Buddha was being repaired. In order to figure out the name of Silsangsa iron Buddha, we may need to refer to Historic record of Silsangsa. According to the historic record, the name of Silsangsa iron Buddha was Locana Buddha. Interestingly, Borimsa had built a large Locana Buddha which was over 2m in height. Moreover, Samhwasa also had built Locana Buddha. Both iron Buddhas in Silsangsa and Samhwasa had significant similarities. According to the location of the remaining arms, Silsangsa iron Buddha might have abhaya and varada-mudra similar to the restored Samhwasa iron Buddha. Interestingly, HaengJeok received the Gujokgye at the Dongwongyeong Bokcheonsa with Soocheol. The record showed that the Silsangsa iron Buddha served as an example for the Samhwasa iron Buddha. Therefore, the Zen temples built Locana Buddha because the Zen priests in the late Silla received the Gujokgye from the Huayan temple, and they concurrently learned Huayan teaching and took it as their own theoretical foundation. The Silsangsa iron Buddha was clearly transferred from the original enshrining space to the current Healing Buddha Hall. The Healing Buddha Hall was built later in Joseon, and the Goryeo building site was discovered under the Healing Buddha Hall from the investigation. In addition, the stone pedestal discovered during the repairing construction of the Healing Buddha Hall was to support the iron Buddha. In order to estimate the original enshrining space of the Silsangsa iron Buddha, the sizes of the Buddha of the Zen temple and the Golden Hall were compared and examined. The Silsangsa iron Buddha was likely to be enshrined as the main Buddha in the building under the present Bogwangjeon.

A Buddhist shrine is a shrine for a Buddhist statue, which was built form Goryo dynasty. There are various different kinds of Buddhist shrines, from handheld small one, sized 5cm, with a fire protecting human from evil to large one with Buddhist sculpture sized 10~20cm inside shrines. Although material is various such as gilt bronze, silver and wood, gilt bronze Buddhist shrine was only shown at early Joseon period. According to Songgwangsa temple in Suncheon city, the golden Buddhist shrine known as worship Buddha of King’s advisor Gobong (高峰國師 ; 1350-1428) is a small one sized 25.3cm. The shrine showed uncommon peculiarities such as no Buddhist sculpture inside compared to other general ones, jewel decoration on the upper front side with precious stone as turquoise and crystal, and Buddha stature carved on the separate gilt bronze plate to enshrine inside shrine. Main Buddha statue was casted on the golden silver plate, and showed peculiar form as following. Buddha statue assumed Three Buddha sculptures with Vairochana, Amitabha and Maitreya were positioned on the upper part, and Attandance Bodhisattvas with Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Ananda and Kasyapa were located on the lower part. Also there were Vajrapani, Avalokitesvara, Ksitigarbha were stood in front of or back side of door (openning and shutting). Three Buddha sculptures are similar to xylography book of Diamond Sutra painting built in 1363, and compared to Three Buddha sculptures on 1st floor body of 10th floor stone tower at Gyungchunsa and Three Buddha sculptures(三世佛會) of Wongaksa temple. It attracted considerable attention that the background of appearance altogether with Samantabhadra and Manjusri, Avalokitesvara and Kisitigarvawere the same as that of Buddhist poet(偈頌) of portraitist Naong It is understood that gilt bronze was derived from the idea background combined with a Avatamsake theory(華嚴敎學) linked from King’s advisor Naong to portraitist Gobong and a prayer to Buddha. It is also special that different material was used depending on Buddha statues. It also demonstrated meaning of Buddhist religion that Three Buddha sculptures of main body in Buddhist shrine and Attandance Bodhisattvas symbolized eternity of Buddha by using gold and silver, and Vajrapani symbolized dignity difference by copper. It is assumed that the manufacturing period was in early Joseon dynasty corresponding to end life of King’s advisor Gobong, which was calculated by the analysis of iconography peculiarities such as Avalokitesvara, Ksitigarbha put on a hood, Three Buddha sculptures and Manjusri, Samantabhadra and the careful review of pattern of spawn. A royal palace typed gilt bronze Buddhist shrine was manufactured in Goryo dynasty and became modelling with decorative design of Goryo style. As shown in gilt bronze Buddhist shrine of portraitist Naong belonging to Chuneunsa temple, the enshrined inner Buddha statue was fixed by lockup device. Also Buddhist painting in the background(後佛幀) and Buddha statue were enshrined inside which was reminded of Buddhist temple and understandably designed to pray by monks as they moved.

There is a Shakyamuni sarira stupa standing on the Yongju peak(龍珠峰) behind the main building(大雄殿) of Bohyeon temple(普賢寺) in Myohyang mountain(妙香山), The stupa was originally built in Naewonam(內院庵) area but was moved to the Younju peak in 1930s after it floated downstream during the great flood around 1915. The stupa consists of two story octagonal bolster, four story octagonal pavilion-shaped body, and sphere main body with podium and lotus base. The content of the stupa stele(塔碑) written by the Buddhist priest Hyujeong(休靜大師) informs the construction time and patron of the stupa and background situation when the stupa was built, which provide new art historical perspective as follows. First, early Indian stupa, bell-shaped stone(石鐘形) stupa on the terrace for ordainment, and sphere body(球形 塔身) stupa all can be grouped as Jong(鍾). Original meaning of Jong(鍾) is round shape of grass mound, wine container, and wine cup, which is similar to the shape of early stupa and has different meaning from Jong(鐘). From the story about Jongdae(鐘臺) which was offered during the ordainment ceremony, cited in the Gyedandogyeong(戒壇圖經) by Doseon, the bell(鐘) became to be related to the shape of stupa. Second, Iksan Mireuksaji west stone stupa's(益山 彌勒寺址西石塔) relics of gilt-bronze outer jar, gold inner jar, and Buyeo Wangheungsaji's(夫餘 王興寺址) relics of silver outer jar shows in Baekje era, such as the Han Dynasty bronze Jong. So I think the shape of the bell(鐘) appeared in the Record of Bulguksa Temple Stupa's Renovation(佛國寺西石塔重修形止記) is likely form of Sakyamuni Stupa at Bulguksa Temple's silver sarira jar(銀製舍利壺) and sarira case(舍利盒) than silver sarira outer(銀製舍利外盒) and inner case(內盒). Third, with the development of the Chinese Chan Buddhism, the early Indian stupa shape called Jong(鍾) became rounder which symbolizing tathatā(眞如), the nature of Buddha(佛性), self-examination or svabhāva(自性) as a seamless shape monk stupa(無縫塔) in the 8th century, The change began with the national priest Namyang Hyechung(南楊 慧忠國師) and the inscription of the stupa stele of the Jeongtosa temple(淨土寺) Buddhist master Beopgyeong(法鏡大師) tells that the egg shaped monk stupas(卵塔) of him and his disciple, the national master Hongbeop(弘法國師), were derived from the above mentioned stupa. Fourth, Since the sphere body(球形 塔身) stupa and the bell-shaped stone(石鐘形) stupa on the terrace were appeared as Jong(鍾) on the stupa of Yongju peak stele, the Shakyamuni sarira stupa on the east side of the Hoeamsa temple(檜巖寺) built with the patronage of the Prince Hyoryeong (孝寧大君) in the tenth year of King Sejo(世祖)'s reign(1464) is the one now standing on the northeastern part Hoeamsa temple site(檜巖寺址). Therefore, the stupa testifies the emergence of the sphere body Shakyamuni sari stupa which became to be constructed continuously afterwards.

<Bidu-li Gwibu(碑頭里 龜趺)> is a set of a turtle-shaped stone base(gwibu, 龜趺) and <yisu, 螭首>, lacking its stele. located in Wonju, Gangwon province. On its carvings, the turtle on the <gwibu> turned its head back, and two dragons are linked each other on the <yisu>. Located near is a stele of <Han Baek-gyeom's memorial stele(韓百謙 神道碑)>. These two have things in common; two same motifs carving techniques, and drain holes. <Bidu-li Gwibu> is therefore in a kinship with <Han Baekgyeom's Stele>, both on datings and the figure recorded. Thus it can be inferred that this gwibu set had built in the year of 1629 for Han Jun'gyeom(韓浚謙, Baekgyeom's younger brother, 1557-1627), whom is titled of <Suhpyeong buwon'gun(西平府院君)>. The gwibu part of this set falls into the period style of 1620-30s; traits of webbed-shapes on its mouth, suhgi(瑞氣) flows out from the nose, hexagonal cellular-shaped shell on the back(龜甲), spiral symbols behind the feet. These traits are Goryeo Tapbi tradition in Wonju region. The trapeziod-shaped yisu is akin to one of Beobsangjong(法相宗) stele(塔碑). The most relevant correspondence with the dragon is <Chiljangsa Hyecho-guksa's Stele(七長寺 慧炤國師碑, 1060)>; two-staged yisu, the pose of dragons, drain holes. Therefore it could be stated that this set of gwibu is built after the manner of both Goryeo gwibus in Wonju region and yisu of <Chiljangsa Hyecho-guksa Stele>. This retro character of wonju region in 17th century is derived from the effort to devise a new style. With resemblance between Han Baekgyeom's Stele out of Jun-gyeom's patronage and <Bidu-li Gwibu>, this gwibu is also out of his patronage. This retro-immitating manner runs through the kinship and his policital faction. Prince Yinpeong Daegun(麟坪大君, grandson-in-law), members of Suh-in party joined in the Coup of 1623 had built memorial shindobi(神道碑) steles in this retro manner. After all, this will to devise new style through retro manner in building <Bidu-li Gwibu> was the major factor changing late Chosun gwibus into dragon-headed style.

A monk painter Cheolhyeon(哲玄) in the 17th century of the Joseon Dynasty is known to have participated in painting the Amrta painting(甘露王圖) of Uhak Cultural Foundation in 1681 and painted “The fifth king of hell(第5閻羅大王圖)” of the Korean Buddhist Art Museum. Recently “The first king of hell(第1秦廣大王圖)” and “The second king of hell(第2初江大王圖)” of Pusan Dong-A University Museum and “The sixth king of hell(第6變成大王圖)” of Incheon Songam Museum and “The ninth king of hell(第9都市大王圖)” of Jinju Chongrim temple which are a set with “The fifth king of hell”, were additionally identified, which prompts the discussions on “Ten king of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon. According to the writing in Chinese ink on the Buddhist Tablet in Wooljin Bulyeong temple, Cheolhyeon, a monk of Pohang Oeo temple, interacted with the monk painters in Gyeongsang area. The basic composition of “Ten Kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon is the same with that of “Ten Kings of Hell” in the Joseon Dynasty. However, its composition is more systematic than “Ten Kings of Hell” in the early Joseon Dynasty and its composition and icons are close to “Ten Kings of Hell” in the late Joseon Dynasty. In “Ten Kings of Hell” in the late Joseon Dynasty, the dependents and hells on the low part regularly appeared and the same icons were used and transformed. “Ten kings of Hel”l of Okcheon temple painted in 1744 inherited the icons and composition of “Ten kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon first and a number of “Ten kings of Hell” of a similar type have been identified. However “Ten kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon lacks a spatial sense and an understanding of icons, which indicates it is likely that the icons of popular Ten kings of Hell” in the late Joseon Dynasty were not created by Cheolhyeon. However it is more likely to be close to the times when the icons of “Ten kings of Hell” in the late Joseon Dynasty. Regarding the expressional technique, “Ten Kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon follows the expressional technique in the early Joseon Dynasty and its pattern are in compliance with the patterns that were widely used in the 17th century, yet have not been used since the 18th century. The characteristics of the icons and composition of “Ten Kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon continued to be used for “Ten kings of Hell” even after the 18th century, whereas its expressional technique became a trend and developed after the 18th century. “Ten Kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon is the first example of “Ten kings of Hell” painting that has passed down through the 18 century to the 19th century. Through the flow of the icons of “Ten Kings of Hell” painted by Cheolhyeon, the representative icons have been transformed and new icons have been added rather than have been disconnected and developed for distribution.

Researches on Buddhist Sites in Gyeongju during the Japanese Colonial Period and “A Report on Archaeological Sites and Artifacts in Gyeongju” Kim Dongha This study focuses on how researches on the Buddhist archaeological sites in the Gyeongju area took place during the Japanese Colonial Period. The archaeological researches began to be carried out by the Japanese scholars sponsored by the Japanese colonial authority. The early phase of the research activities was largely focused on surveying the existing situations surrounding the sites and artifacts, but gradually expanded to excavations and even restoration of ruined pagodas. <Gyeongju Heritage Sites Preservation Society>, a private research organization representing the local academic arena played a particularly important role in conducting researches and publicizing research results for the general public. The main discussion of this study deals with research activities conducted by two Japanese historians, Moroga Hideo and Osaka Kintaro, who were key figures in the <Gyeongju Heritage Sites Preservation Society>. The main part of this study includes a detailed review of ‘A Report on Archaeological Sites and Artifacts in Gyeongju’ collected by the Gyeongju Heritage Sites Preservation Society and a discussion about its value as a historical record. Compiled in 1931 by the members of the Society including Osaka Kintaro, this report should be deemed as a very important source of knowledge regarding the survey of Buddhist heritage sites in the Gyeongju area. Remarkably, no other materials focusing on the same subject have been able to produce such a detailed, systematic data in which archaeological sites and artifacts in Gyeongju-gun are classified into eight groups according to its eight administrative divisions. In addition, the report can be used profitably among those seeking to enhance their knowledge about individual sites of the period because it contains extremely detailed information about the sites, their location, ownership, current situation, map, survey photographs, and history recorded in ‘Samguk sagi’, ‘Samguk yusa’ , and ‘Donggyeong japgi’. The author of this report Osaka Kintaro was active in giving names to the temple sites in Gyeongju and the neighboring area, and it is no exaggeration to say that most names of the temple sites in the Gyeongju area are based on the results of his researches. A considerable number of such names can be found in this report. Therefore, a closer review of this report would reveal the names and locations of many temples which have lost them. Finally, one of the most important elements that add additional value to this report as a historical material is that it contains photographs of some heritage sites which have disappeared. As an example, the report contains photographs and a map of Sarigak of Girimsa Temple, thus helping researchers gain knowledge how this temple building so far unknown looked like and where it stood. More studies of the report are expected to be greatly helpful in the researches of many archaeological sites in the Gyeongju area.
