The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reasons behind pre-service elementary teachers’ oblivion of learner comprehensibility in teaching English in English and their implications on pre-service teacher education. Based on about 120 pre-service teachers written reflections on why they thought they would have to conduct classes in fluent normal speed English, overlooking the fact that elementary students would have difficulty understanding such speech, the study sheds light on the causes of this puzzling phenomenon, discusses the pitfalls leading to the causes, and makes suggestions on measures to take in order to help uprooting of the tenacious misconception of pre-service teachers and realizing the benefits of the TEE policy in the elementary classrooms.

We did some research and survey about the meaning of analogy, especially about animals, to different gender. And then, in order to prevent the cultural conflicts for second language learner, we gave some education programme on the basis of our research results. Besides, we also carried out some specific investigations about difference of the analogy meaning as well as connotation for man or woman. Initially, we gave some explanation for the theoretical background and meaning about metaphor in China and korea. Next, we summarize the commonly used metaphors in our life through the questionnaire survey asnd research of Korean textbooks. We also compared the questionnaire survey asnd research of the animals analogy meaning. In addition, different gender could also affect the language culture, so we analyzed commendatory and derogatory of different sentence.

This paper examines the ordering distribution in Korean translations of postposed adverbial clauses in English, and motivations for the ordering. Based on Haegeman’s differentiation of adverbial clauses, the finite adverbial clauses from the English texts are classified into two sub-types: central and peripheral adverbial clauses. Central adverbial clauses and peripheral adverbial clauses that follow the main clause in English are shown to have different positional patterns in their Korean translations. Postposed peripheral adverbial clauses tend to be translated as the final clause, that is, the main clause, or as a separate sentence, while they tend not to be positioned after the overt subject of the main clause. Postposed central adverbial clauses tend to be positioned after the overt subject of the main clause, or precede the main clause. Most of the ‘event time’ adverbial clauses are shown to be translated in accordance with the principle of iconicity. This paper argues that the positional patterns in Korean translations of postposed adverbial clauses in English are motivated by syntactic, semantic, and discourse pragmatic forces.

The Academies of Classical Learning(Shuyuan) can be said to be an institution that was responsible for academic researches as well as cultural education sandwiched in between the ancient Official Education (Guanxue) sector and the Private Education (Sixue) sector. The Qing Dynasty was a period where this ancient concept of academy was at its golden age. The number of academies created, the distribution rate and the types of academies during this time all supports the idea that it was a time where everything was perfectly suited and aligned to it. The Imperial Examination(Keju) is the longest examination system in terms of its continuation hours and perfected in its system bar none throughout Chinese history. As such, the contents of the imperial examination had a huge influence and a direct impact on the educational contents. The contents of the imperial examination designated by the government (guanfang) also happened to be the main educational contents of various educational institutes. The academies of the Qing Dynasty era can be seen has having an inextricably bound relationship to the imperial examination based on such reasons. Most of the academies sought to raise scholars through the imperial examination and the contents that they taught were almost in perfect alignment with the contents of the imperial examination designated by the government. After the reign of Emperor Kang Xi, because the Qing Dynasty found stability in terms of its overall ruling of the whole of Chinese territories, the Chinese society also entered into a development era. As there was also a need for a governance that strengthened the thoughts of the people, the Qing Dynasty implemented the policy of the academies to be a one where they promoted it from a one where they suppressed it. During the time of emperor Kang Xi, emperor Yong Zheng, and emperor Qian Long, the emperors themselves would bestow horizontal inscribed boards and books to academies in each region several times thereby further supporting the flourishing of the golden age of the academies. The reason behind the education of Poetry and Fu (Shifujiaoyu) at the Qing Dynasty academies was to teach the students in accordance with the rules of the standard sentences executed within the government. The solid academic foundation in the exegesis (xungu) for the sentences used in the imperial examination, especially the streotyped writing (baguwen), was extremely useful given that everything was attuned to the imperial examination. It was inevitable that the types of academies in the Qing Dynasty ranged diversely in style so the reason behind the exegesis education for each academies were apt to be different and the importance of the exegesis education also differed for each academy. However, whether they had various ranging characteristics or not, in most cases, history education was always a very important part of all academies in their education system.

Screen translation is carried out by the conveying meaning system through multiplex channels. Therefore it needs some translating methods to overcome the spatio-temporal restrictions and to lighten the cognitive load of the audience. The purpose of this research is to explore the effective switching strategies for translating movies and TV dramas from English into Korean. To begin with, we briefly review the main notions – readability, reduced translation, dynamic equivalence, shift – which provide a conceptual background for the systematic study of switching translation. Then, we study switching translation cases dividing into structural switching and conceptual switching. And in the latter case, various translations tactics such as generalization, specialization, substitution are introduced. Lastly, content relevant substitution, situational substitution and functional substitution are shown separately as substitution examples.

제주방언에서 ‘가지다’의 문법화 현상 연구

This paper deals with the syntactic and semantic functions of the Jeju dialect verb 'gajida'(가지다) meaning ‘to have' in English, which has the same grammatical functions of the Korean standard verb ‘gajida'. It keeps the form of an auxiliary verb usually used as ‘-eo gajigo'(-어 가지고), but does not show any functions of an auxiliary verb. Moreover, it is used as not only a conjunctive ending but also a discourse marker. The Jeju dialect has 'goejida'(지다), 'ajida(아지다), ‘oejida’(지다) and ‘atta'(앗다) as its allomorphs, some of which have been grammaticalized into a conjunctive ending.

This study clarified to semantic structure, especially event one, which moment verbs have specific features, that make the other type except four type of verbs on the basis of Pustejovsky(1991a, 1995) approach in which he suggests with the same stand of Vendler(1967). In order to achieve the purpose, I summarizes the approach of Pustejovsky(1991a, 1995) which he present the theory of generative lexicon with character of Vendler(1967). The theory of generative lexicon have manifestation of four type as the structure of argument, the event structure, the feature structure and the inherit of lexeme. This paper focuses especially on the second one. Pustejovsky(1991a, 1995) also suggests that the structure of event divided into three as process, state, transition. But I suggest the moment verb type in order to explain moment type I compare the “dochakhada” of achievement verb to it For justifying my suggest with which induce the two type have different features.

Outdoor advertising, one of the key elements constituting a view of the urban area, has a characteristic of changes over time. This study examines what changes have happened in the urban landscape by noting the impact of the outdoor advertizing on the city landscape and analyzing changes in the outdoor advertising. The Jeju city, one of the typical tourist cities in Korea, is an area enough appropriate to look into the landscape changes thanks to its booming tourism industry. Three major commercial areas of the Jeju city, Sicheongap, Jewonsageori and Chilseongtong, were chosen as targets for the analysis of their landscape changes. This research result reveals that Jewonsageori shows the biggest changes in the landscape among the three analysis areas.

The purpose of this study is to investigate which reading instructions were really effective to improve early reading skills and competence of L1 and L2 English learners and children, in particular, by critically reviewing and studying the recent research findings in cognitive perspectives published since the NRP report (2000) presented. I have made some suggestions on early reading instruction for Korean children studying under the currently revised national curriculum in order to foster their reading and writing abilities required for the future global society.

Korea starts out the government-led “multiculturalism” in 2006, As result, the number of foreigners are getting increasesed in Jeju. And it has become a regional visit for foreigners as the “Free International City”. International marriage and employment, a variety in community, such as foreign nationals who emigrated in the study are also present and increasing. This paper starts with the study of language-use in the foreign resident community of Jeju Island, it is intended to grasp the reality of language use from the interview survey conducted in foreign residents in Jeju. Specifically, to characterize their language use, it was considered language environment and consciousness of language-use associated with it. As a result, it has become a society of foreign resident using and adapting to the Korean language and Korean culture. They had been using Korean language for most of their livelihood conversation. On the other hand, by the increase in foreign tourists, the mother tongue of foreign residents was also seen to be used as a source of communication in Jeju It is suggested that the possibility of above factor "affecting the language environment" exists in current society. Korean language is different, it has its own composition and grammar, also there is individual experiences and ethnic group.
